Having grown up during the Cold War I find this as one of the best of the older bond films. To hear it was written on the fly surprises me since it has a great storyline.
From Russia With Love is my number one . Doctor No is number two. Goldfinger is number three. I favor these movies because of the freshness of the whole new idea of Bond movies. Red Grant is absolutely the number villain portrayed in the Bond movies. Robert Shaw is the Terminator long before before Arnold's great movie. Thank you for a great video. I enjoyed the scenes and narration very much.
This was the first Bond film I saw, and the only one to be remotely plausible, IMO. I believe that may be due to the lack of a villain's lair being spectacularly breached or destroyed.
The fight on the train between Bond and Grant was one of if not the best fight scenes ever filmed. There was an authentic feel to that scene. The audience feels they are in the cabin with Bond.
“From Russia with Love” is the most realistic Bond movie - the one with the most plausible scenarios for stuff that real-world spies might have done during the early Cold War. But regrettably, this realism makes the film a bit tame compared to Bond’s usual cinematic superheroics. It would be a great John LaCarre or Tom Clancy movie though.
Something you didn’t mention that’s in the picture for your video is that Sean Connery is holding a pistol that is on the movie poster but not in the movie. When they were doing the photography for the poster, nobody remembered to bring a stunt pistol. One of the crew members went back to his suitcase and brought back an airgun that was used in the promotional poster. The poster shows a pistol that is never seen in the actual movie. I own a copy of this airgun.
From then on the pistol was and air guns they remembered to bring everything they needed for the shoot everything that is except a gun so they sent one of the helpers out and the only thing he could find was the cross man bb gun and it fit the bill.
From Russia With Love is my favorite Bond film. It is the only Bond film with some grit. It feels more real. The briefcase with knife and gold coins is reasonable, practical, and low tech. For me, Shaw plays the convincing and most threatening nemesis for Bond. Every bit Bond's equal. As for Goldfinger -- no way would the British government give Bond an Aston Martin. Maybe a 5 year old MG or Austin Healy.
#21: Daniela Bianchi was not the first choice to play Tatiana. It was German actress Elga Andersen who was in 1971's Le Mans. This is how director Terence Young tells the story: Many actresses were tested for the part but Elga was our first choice. She was in a film called Bird of Paradise, and she got the part on those merits. She was going to be announced the next day, but there was a disastrous screening of a new Judy Garland film I Could Go On Singing, and no one was in the mood for announcing anything. Then a top United Artists executive who had been trying to sleep with her told us plainly that we couldn't use her because of her reputation. It was completely untrue. I found out later that she was a woman of impeccable character, but between the bad taste in everyone's mouth at UA about the Judy Garland film, and this character's unfounded accusations, I couldn't get anyone to approve her casting. I liked Daniela very much, but at the time I thought she was a very limited actress. The role, of course, didn't call for much, but Elga would have been better.
From Russia With Love is one of Ian Fleming's best 007 novels & one of the Top Ten favorite books of US President John F. Kennedy, whose revealation caused sales of the James Bond novels to skyrocket. Its said JFK saw the film version prior to going to Dallas, Texas. Brit censors are such ultra conservatives. The one way mirror scene was in the novel; From Russia With Love was one of the most faithful film adaptations of an Ian Fleming 007 novel.
It and OHMSS are the two most faithful adaptations-that’s a major reason I love both films. Two of Fleming’s very best, next to “Dr. No” and “You Only Live Twice”.
Although John Barry wrote and conducted the score, the title number, sung so brilliantly by Matt Monro, was actually written, albeit in a very Barry-esque style, by Lionel Bart, the composer of the hit musical, Oliver!
My Dad worked for Fairey marine and was driving one of the Fairey Huntsman boats, in fact I just saw him in the video, he didn't get set on fire though, but he did go to the premier in London.
It was close to the novel in some ways, but differed a lot. If I had to list the novels that matched the movies the closest I would probably put Dr No first followed by On Her Majesty's Secret Service, then From Russia with love followed by Goldfinger. Thunderball was close but drifted further from the novel. The rest of the movies were nothing like the novels at all.
Are you kidding!!! I have just read all the novels in order and found they were so much better than the movies. The novels make the movies look like a child's fantasy, the novels are more realistic, with nitty-gritty espionage all through them. You can never look the movies the same way again after reading the novels.
@@Sutho81 Depends on the novel. The movies that are better (off the top of my head) Treasure of Sierra Madre, African Queen, Hot Rock. Books that are better; Crime and Punishment, but that's an excellent movie too. (Peter Lorre). I can't think of any others at the moment. Oh, all the Sherlock Holmes novels and the James Bonds are pretty bad. The Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce movies are excellent. I used to like the early Bonds. I still do, but the later ones got too silly. I'm older now and see things slightly differently. You're partially correct, but it depends. Some movies are pure crap. I have to agree with that.
@@alext8828 Interesting take. I was only comparing the Ian Fleming novels to the equivalent movies. The early movies were a fairly close adaptation of the novel, but not precise. For comparing the novel From Russia with Love to the movie, I think what Fleming had written would have been better. Small things like the explosives planted under the Russian headquarters, the events on the train, the book that was crafted into a gun, then the ending with Bond scratched with the nerve agent leaving readers wondering if he would survive. It was that incident that was referred to in Dr No when he was given a new gun as the reason for the change.
1 The third of 3 movies Steve McQueen would make with Director John Sturges “Never So Few”-1959 and The Magnificent 7-1960. (2) Charles Bronson and James Coburn also co- starred in The 7 3) British Actor Donald Pleasance was in the RAF World War 2 was shot down and was in a German POW Camp 3The first of two films Richard Attenborough would make with Steve McQueen 1966”The Sand Pebbles 4)Charles Bronson fell in love with David McCallums wife Actress Jill Ireland (5) Bronson told David he would marry Jill Ireland one day and about 4 years later they did 6) David McCallum married his second wife the very same day. Sorry I forgot her name 7) In the book Hilts escapes by train but Steve McQueen suggested he make the escape by motorcycle 8) Steve did all his own riding except for the very last jump over barbed wire. 9) The last jump was done by Steve’s good friend Bud Ekins. For insurance purposes Steve wasn’t allowed to do the jump (10) British Actor James Donald is the only actor to appear in all 3 pow movies:Bridge On The River Kwai,2) The Great Escape-1963 and3) King Rat-1965-66??? (11) James Garner and Steve McQueen were next door neighbors 12) Steve McQueen was set to star in Gran Prix 1967 but filming on The Sand Pebbles went about 9 months over schedule and Director John Frankenheimer had to cast James Garner instead. James called Steve in Taiwan to tell him the bad news. Steve was irate and never talked to James Garner again. Yet Garner was one of the few actors to attend Steve McQueen s funeral in 1980 13)Several members on the crew had also been in German POW camps during the war, some had to leave the set because it was too realistic!!! 14)Steve talked Sir Richard Attenborough into riding on the back of his motorcycle as he tore around the Bavarian countryside. Richard said “ I wanted to keep the British end up”!! 15) 15) In a 2000 interview with Robert Osborne/ TCM James Garner when asked “ did you get along with everyone else on the set?? Garner replied” Everyone except Charlie Bronson”?? I think David McCallum was quite popular on set but his friends resented the Bronson/ Jill Ireland romance. Just a hunch?? 16)James Garner served in both World War 2( Merchant Marines and Korea USAF. Severely wounded in Korea Garner was awarded two Purple Hearts!!!! 17) Charles Bronson was in the Army then the USArmy Air Corps. Bronson was a gunner on a bomber in the Pacific. Also severely wounded and almost shot downCharles was awarded the Purple Heart also!!!! 18)On a British chat show around 1990 Scotsman Gordon Jackson said Steve McQueen “ was one of the greatest actors I ever worked with” According to Steve’s first wife Beale Adams “ Gordon told Steve all about Scottish history and how the McQueen s were one of the great historical clans of Scotland!!! 19). Jill Ireland almost died in Bavaria while visiting the set” I think she hemorrhaged down when David McCallum had to film scenes Charles Bronson would stay with her at the hospital, and little by little Bronson started to fall in love with Jill and Jill with Charles 20)John Sturges was set to direct Le Mans but Steve McQueen and John clashed over many details like the lack of a plot in the script. According to Steve McQueen s first wife Neale Adams John said “ I’m too old,too tired, and too rich to put up with Steve McQueen s BS anymore. John left France flew back to Los Angeles and I don’t think he ever spoke with Steve again?? 21) That’s all I have mate. I hope I was helpful!!!!!!!
Speaking of Call Me Bwana, Bob Hope repeats the scene of The Tarantula Crawling On Him was A Spoof Of Dr. No scene & A Parody of Bob Hope acting as if it's No Big Deal, when he Flicks The Tarantula from his Arm, making funny that he was Tougher Than James Bond, who was Scared, in Dr. No, Of The Tarantula.
The movie 'From Russia with love' also had a slightly different ending than the novel. In the novel, Rosa Klebb kicks bond in the leg with the blade in her shoe before she is subdued and captured by bond. However, the book ends as the effects of a neuro toxin on the blade take effect and Bond dies.
There are mistakes in the chess scene. Every serious chess player knows that you press the clock with the same hand that you used to make your move. Makes me wince every time I see it. But it's a great film all the same.
I read somewhere that FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE was JFK's favorite novel, so it was chosen to be the next Bond film after DR. NO (I forgot which one it was but FRWL was not supposed to be the second Bond film; they chose it after JFK declared it as his favorite Bond novel). Also, Pedro Armendariz Jr. - the son of Kerim Bey actor Pedro Armedariz - made an appearance in the 1989 Bond film LICENCE TO TO KILL with Timothy Dalton as the president of the fictional country, Isthmus.
Do I remember the ratings incorrectly? X was for over 18s. It was an aspiration during my teens to be old enough to see an X-rated film because it meant you were an adult
haha I can't believe people still think Connery did boxing. Have none of them seen a real fight. Connery couldn't throw a straight punch to save his life. He never trained boxing.

Great. A real voiceover. No AI. One of my favourite films. Daniela Bianchi and Diana Rigg are the best Bond girls ever. Thanks.
Sean, the boss of all 007s ever.
The train fight may be the best close quarter fight ever filmed in any movie ever! Your video is concise and very interesting, Thanks!
FRWL is my #1 Bond film. It had it all - Killer Bond villain, beautiful Bond girl. And everything in between.
This was Connery's favorite and one of the best Bond's
Possibly one ☝️ if not the best Bond movie ever made 🤔👍🏻
This channel is rocking it. No filler delays and really good info and clips

I'd say my favorite Bond film, and Bianchi was beautiful !!
The most booklike, and my favorite Bond movie.
The fight on the train between Bond and Grant was one of if not the best fight scenes ever filmed. There was an authentic feel to that scene. The audience feels they are in the cabin with Bond.
Such a great movie ..the fight in the train way ahead of its time

They both look very similar.
So I, don't mind or care.
Oh wow. I thought Sean chose Daniela.
C'est le meilleur des Bond.
"Opération tonnerre" est très bon aussi (Alberto Celi, formidable).

That was the first book I ever read! I was 8 years old!
The best book became the best movie.
Daniela Bianchi’s voice was dubbed I think. The guy who played Goldfinger also didn’t speak English.
Gert Frobe, yes.
Yes I think you are right her voice was dubbed and also the director was unhappy with her walk and so most film footage is from the hips up.

The title song by Matt Monro was awesome.
the "subscribe" edit was awesome :)
Thanks
While it's obviously not closely following the novel, it's still the only _James Bond_ movie that has the "feel" of the original Ian Fleming novels.

The movies were so much better than the books. Excellent back-stories. So sad about Pedro Armendáriz. He was a solid character in the film.
I prefered the original books

SPECTRE was actually introduced in Dr No by the title character.
