Sonic frontiers had more complex and more hype towards it. While Superstars is good but can honestly go under the radar because it's simple and more popular games are out right now.
More like controversy and folks saying Frontiers looking like an Unreal Engine demo. Still I guess the negativity with Frontiers, it still got more eyes compared to Superstars tho
@@seriesx9508 "Gamers like good graphics". N this is why modern gaming is dead in terms of fun cuz gamers kept focusing on "OH SHINY GRAPHICS" n "OH LOOK AT THE DETAILS ON THE FLOOR N WALLS" instead of look how fun the game is. Frontiers has mid graphics yet that still sells cuz of the enjoyable gameplay it offers at least. Also relax, ya Superstars doesn't live up to expectations in terms of graphics n music, but it's not the worse thing we gotten from this franchise. While Superstars models for characters is mid n Superstars got more misses than hits with music, still the lvls don't look that bad n there some hitter music from Superstars like Bridge island, Forest lvl, Lagoon City, n the Desert lvl tho. Also I don't get why ur commenting me with this argument cuz I haven't even said Superstars graphics are amazing (Mania still tops Superstars along with other Classic/Modern games). I disagree that Superstars graphics is bad cuz again, I think Superstars looks better than Frontiers but still ya Superstars graphics is still mid at best. Also all Classic games don't have proper walking animations because who gives flying fuck about WALKING ANIMATION? This is a fast paced platforming hedgehog, like anyone would focus on that lmao☠☠☠. OH NO, This 2d Sonic game doesn't have a walking animation so its gets a 2 out of 10🤣🤣🤣
Frontiers just had more mystery, hype and it was a brand new gameplay style before release hence why people were more keen to try it then another Classic Sonic game
I think it's simply because people didn't like the idea of a 2.5D classic sonic game, they wanted pixel art like mania or 2D animation like Hollow Knight, and another possible reason is also because superstars simply doesn't have anything equivalent to the spectacle of the titans in frontiers, the titans and their theme songs pretty much carried the hype train of frontiers.
@@premydaremy LMFAO Ikr? When Mania came out I bought it twice: On PC and Switch, and then I bought Mania Plus twice as well. Superstars is not even gonna do Mania numbers
I never want to hear Sonic fans say that modern Sonic doesn’t sell and that classic Sonic is more popular than modern Sonic ever again. It’s clearly just another excuse to defend the nostalgia pandering the series has been doing for over a decade. May Sega take this as a lesson moving forward and end the classic Sonic nostalgia pandering.
The day they get rid of Classic Sonic and his gameplay style is the day I end my relationship with the franchise as a whole. Modern Sonic can't do gameplay that Classic does. Just using Classic at all is not nostalgia pandering by itself. The Advance games proved that Modern cannot do it.
honestly outside of Sonic fans, i barely saw any hype surrounding this game. I think alot of the general gaming community looked at this thing and gave out a collective: "....eh" to me, it doesnt feel like it did poorly cuz of competition, i just think alot of people looked at this game and just thought it looked like a bland and generic ass 2D platformer, which you know... it was
@@HeroTheHedgehog999So why was Premy blaming IGN for not liking this terrible Sonic Superstars game? I like Classic Sonic but Frontiers has no redeemable qualities.
This shouldn't be too surprising if Sonic folks and even Sega themselves realize Sonic really has no ground in his home region. Almost never has lol. The West (and really, the US specifically lol) really carries the series in terms of sales. So it still confuses me how hard Sega tries to pretend that region means anything to this series outside being where he was created. Just the harsh truth. But putting that aside, another myth that has to stop is Classic Sonic being this undisputed better sub-section of Sonic. It has the "highest performing games" because the first two Genesis games were pack-ins with Genesis systems. It has the most "consistency" (lmao) because there's less Classic games. Sonic went a whole decade without Classic Sonic and was perfectly fine. The hard truth of the matter is just doing Classic games with no substance was never going to help this series ALONE. For as divisive Frontiers was, and putting aside my own opinions, it sold so well because it actually tried new shit with this series. It actually had s o m e type of unique vision beyond "make more retro 2d cuz EZ nostalgia money". Granted, as usual, the execution left a lot to be desired. But like with any other series.... not doing the same ol same ol and soullessly copying ideas does nothing but help. (And in case anyone brings up Mario, he's in a league of his own lol. He got away with the NSMB game spamming because of the overall brand's worldwide strength. Sonic does not have that luxary lol. Never has.)
Would Sonic be able to get back to his ‘Glory days’ since the genesis? Like think about it: 2 movies, comic influxe since 2020(which is dwindling drastically), livestreams and a butt-TON of merch. 3.5 million copies sold for a 3D Sonic is great for a SONIC game, but not great for a legacy IP. Those numbers would be disappointing for an IP like Mario and Sonic Superstars furthers that with the initial sales. The issue is that long history of mishaps, including the identity crisis the brand is still suffering from…which I feel SegaSammy doesn’t really care as much as the people working on the brand does to an extent. I know Sonic fans like to pump up their boats to feel like they still matter in the general gaming discussion. Don’t get me wrong, they’re very VERY passionate. But, look at the numbers…need I say more?
You hit the nail on the head. The Sonic series cannot achieve huge numbers, especially after the release of Sonic 06, where it received a backlash from the gaming community. I mean, if you look for it, you will discover that 3 million copies is a huge number for Sonic fans, but for Mario fans 3 million is nothing, and even the most bizarre and poorly marketed Mario game can achieve more than that.
I mean if the game was really something new and exciting it could of faired as good or maybe in the Ball Park Frontiers did and it's biggest contender was GoW back in the day and Frontiers did well enough with that perspective, but Super Stars just doesn't hold a candle to Spiderman 2. They basically went, "Hey Rember Classic Sonic he's 3d now." (That's underselling the game but hear me out.) It's nostalgia filled for a region of the world that apparently has no real fondness of the character or that part in his history to begin with, atleast in comparison to the wider fan base. It never really had a chance. Mario and Spiderman just burred it.@@demetriusnp49
@@waled7564 I think people overstate how much damage 06 did to Sonic's brand. Most long running gaming franchsies have at least one game that's just as bad if not more so than 06. The issue is the combination of a highly divisive fanbase where certain groups have drastically different ideas on how the series should be moving forward, SEGA trying to ride on the coattails of other popular series(hence why we got the Sonic Racing ripoffs of Mario Kart)instead of embracing what made the series popular to begin with, and just a consistent amount of forgettable to flat out bad titles throughout the years. The only reason why people seem to think 06 somehow single handedly destroyed the series public perception is because it's low hanging fruit that people who already don't like Sonic use to bash the series anyway.
Sonic Superstars sold well because it released close to Sonic Movie 2. Look at actual steam and achievement stats. Most gamers quit Sonic Frontiers after Island 2
While Superstars is nowhere near as polished as it should be, I do feel Superstars faces a much tougher competition in Mario Wonder than Frontiers did with Ragnarok. Both being classic 2D platformers, Superstars and Wonder target pretty much the same audience. With launch dates so close together, most people would have to choose between the two and we all know which one is more worth the asking price. I guess Superstars could pick up some pace once everybody is done with Wonder and the price drops during the winter sales.
@@seriesx9508 Totally agree on that. Everything from level design to graphics in Superstars feels quite generic with a general lack of polish and its a tough sell at full price. Just saying that launching it next to one of the best in the genre squashes any appeal that it could carry in the first place. While one could argue Frontiers and Ragnarok had different audiences due to age and platform factors (Switch sells 10 times as much as PS5 in Japan), the same cannot be said for Wonder and Superstars.
I don't understand why people think Superstars is unpolished. The game runs like a dream for me on my PS5, unlike Spider-Man 2, which has crashed multiple times, enemies get stuck behind walls, audio drops out, and QTE sections freeze the game.
@@TabbyStar8462That's one of the things that impressed me the most about Frontiers. I remember when Sega revealed the release date be one day before GOW Ragnarok, i was really worried that this would hurt the game. It never did lol. The game still sold really well, and broke records of download on steam and in many other places. Superstars i think is a very cool and fun game, but is visibly inferior to Wonders(Another Wonderful game)
I mean, what were they thinking when they released it alongside 2 of the biggest games in the year?💀 mania was praised to no end and it didn’t sell that much and now you wanna release a worse 2d game at a worse release date?
Thing is if the game was actually something fresh and innovative and had great marketing, they could've released the same day as Mario/Spider-Man and STILL moved far more units. Problem is SEGA is trying to recreate NSMB 2 in an era where Nintendo is trying their hardest to differentiate from their stale/repetitive era.
Who knows, we don’t know the worldwide sales yet maybe it has sold better on that front, Japan overall doesn’t care that much about Sonic, especially 2D sonic so ofc the sales of another 2D game were going to be pretty bad on Japan
@@wolfdragox5563since it’s a classic games, I would say kids wouldn’t buy it straight away and ask for Christmas so it might sell better in the lead up to Christmas

You can hate the game or whatever but IGN’s review was really stupid
@@seriesx9508well you can agree with the overall take while still disagreeing with the reasoning. People can think games are good or bad for different reasons, and even if it does suck, saying it sucks for a reason that is based on the core design of sonic games that people love makes no sense Also I do know a guy that actually did like the game, I could link the 3 hour vid but the overall is that they liked the level design, special stages and everything that wasn't the core game was mid, bosses are among the worst in the series, but he usually just plays time attack so he can ignore that after the first playthrough, and emerald powers are stupid broken so he never uses (and usually forget about) them
This fanbase is really obsessed with giving poor quality titles the benefit of the doubt to a point where it's ridiculous. Superstars had zero hype surrounding it and the game looked super boring. Haven't bought it and I don't think I ever will. This is coming from the same dude that bought Frontiers instantly and dropped like 150 hours into it w/ modding and replays. You can adore a franchise and still admit that something just wasn't worth the buzz. The fact that superstars had no buzz around it outside of the toxically positive sonic fans should speak for itself. I'm very confident in saying this game isn't gonna sell well. Holiday season, discount sales etc won't suddenly make people want to buy a game that looks really boring.
I think it's a combination of non existent marketing and the $60 price tag that's responsible for the lackluster sales. Yeah superstars released in the same period as Wonder and Spiderman 2, but I think it would've still sold relatively well regardless of that fact.
I still find it funny that people thought Superstars would beat Spider-Man 2 and Mario Wonder when the release date was announced or leaked. Some people thought it wasn't going to beat Spider-Man, but it beat Wonder. I tried to tell them that the other two are going to do far better than Superstars in terms of sales and quality but I still ended up being right by the end of it since I know those two are big games compared to Sonic.
I have a feeling they planned to have Superstars at like a 30-40 dollar price, but when Frontiers sold so well they said "fuck it" and made the game 60. Gens feels more premium because it had a bigger budget. I know they said they'd give Sonic Team a bigger budget for games after frontiers but superstars was probably well into development by the time frontiers became a hit.
Exactly its concerning how sonic fans think sonic is on the level of these games those people need to expand their library of gaming and not just replay sonic 24/7
The comparisons come from the fact that Sonic gets treated like shit while Yakuza and Persona get quality. It's almost as if Sega wants to replace him as their mascot
@@gunman8452at this point might as well. The only reason why I still love this series, is because I love the characters, and some of the content creators. The games have sucked or been just alright to decent for decades now. Idk why Sega would still want to hold onto Sonic games. Seriously
Back then in the late 2000s to early 2010s something like superstars would’ve been a handheld release instead of a new console game. It’s honestly not deserving of that
@@legacytv2453that's even worse for Superstars. Also you mean *#4 in UK Sales* for Sonic Superstars. And a lot of games that get very popular in Japan or in the US, end up underperforming in the UK in comparison. Let's go back to 2002. You had pokemon RS and GTA vice city in the same year. Sonic Advance 2 was doomed from the start with all the heavy hitters coming out left and right, alongside the popularity of Dbz, Yu-Gi-Oh, and WWE (franchises extremely popular in the 2000s that sold a ton of licensed games). Especially since Advance 2 decided to come out almost in mid December. Superstars has it arguably much easier, especially with gaming as mainstream as it is. And yet it still underperforms. The best it can manage is #4 in the UK.
It’s a bit hilarious when you think about it because in 2017 Mania was amazing while Forces was just meh, now in 2023 the tables have turned where Frontiers is amazing and Superstars is just ok. I wonder how 2024 will be, will we get any cool Sonic spin-off since we already got our Modern and Classic Games.
since you bring up spin off's do you think sega should make a sonic rhythm game i mean would make perfect sense since the soundtrack is one of the most beloved things about the series.
The sales will probably go up when there’s a price drop or sale, I’m not excusing the price as it should’ve been $30 like what the base version of Origins is now, I’m just saying.
Sonic will still sell well outside of Japan like it always has. Japan’s gaming culture also doesn’t get excited about purposely retro or nostalgic style of games. So this is really a non story
There's just nothing about Superstars that could grab anyone outside the die hard copers in the fandom. It lacks the flare and style modern Sonic has. General audiences were hooked with an open world Sonic game, and the bad marketing to see if they could fuck it up, or get it right. Superstars looks worse then Mania cause they ditched the sprite based. Compared to Frontiers the game has no right being $60. Modern>Santiago
@@Shadowechokat This is especially true for the sprites of Sonic, Tails and Knuckles in Mania as they were far to busy referencing past sprites to actually inject personality in them like the Advance games did (Mighty and Ray ended up having the best sprites in Mania because there were given actually new character fitting sprites)

I still feel Sonic is still struggling to make sales based on what the populous plays. Obviously due to the movies, those sales have gotten an increase at the time. Opinions of Frontiers and Superstars have shifted a bit even inside the fanbase, so I don’t know if this version of Sonic will hold up compared to his contemporaries. Especially since SegaSammy still belittles Sonic and the people behind the IP. That being said, I knew Sonic was going to lose to the two regardless…but to THIS range between? I don’t understand why Sega feels the need to butcher their game’s starting line. Not just with Sonic, but with things like Persona and Yakuza releasing alongside other massive RPGs. Granted, this occasionally happens but still! lol
@legacytv2453 that's in the UK and there was no amount of sales shown just a chart of the most sales, assuming it selled well is a baseless assumption
@@FloatingKites2422 I think a lot are just mad these games weren’t Unleashed 2, SA3, Mania 2, or a modern sonic 2D game…and they wanted frontiers and superstars to fail from the start because of that. They will always be bitter their favorite sonic game did not get a sequel.
Frontiers sold better 1) fan interaction 2) spoilers 3) sonic drought. Since then they released origins and murder of. And then the sales won't go as much. They need more spacing between games and more quality. If superstars waited a year. Built up fan interaction. And focus on multi-player. It would have sold much better.
There was a lot more hype and ambition with Frontiers which is why it sold more, Superstars is just another Classic Sonic game and Sonic in general was never popular in Japan.
SEGA did this to themselves They released the game the same week as Mario and Spiderman what were they expecting, on top of that the game is overpriced Mario wonder is $60 game but it has more content to justify the price.
I forgot the game came out. I just don't think there's a huge market for 2D *classic* Sonic. Id day just make a 2d sonic that doesn't restrict itself from being like the genesis games, and make it actually interesting. For $60 people were expecting more and something new. Superstars has that Sega Budget feel, that I feel like I already saw with Samba de Amigo Party Central, Both of their recent Super Monkey Ball games, Project Diva Megamix, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, etc.
Superstars is the first new Sonic game I haven't bought in 9 years, so I'm not surprised. You gotta be the biggest diehard to think that looks interesting
Superstars just came out. It's overpriced and got sandwiched between a new Mario and new spider-man game. Lastly, superstars is just mid. More will buy it when it inevitably goes on sale holiday season tho.
I'm glad Superstars is making people realize that 2D Sonic games aren't always an instant 10/10. *Never forget the undeserved positive reception Sonic 4 received when that garbage came out.* Also, I'm honestly getting real sick and tired of seeing Classic Sonic nostalgia bait everywhere now. Thought Classic Sonic was only gonna appear in Generations and that was it, but I thought wrong, I guess. It doesn't help when the marketing for these games are almost non-existent and Sega loves to rush its devs for those sweet holiday sales and stuff.
Why does it seem like Sega or Sonic Team are purposefully ruining the image of classic sonic with some of these low effort post-2010s/nostalgia pandering games as revenge against people begging for classic sonic to come back during the 2000s or "dark age"? I remember when Sega was hell bent on not going back to classic sonic stuff before 2010.
People really overestimate the popularity of Classic Sonic. The moment Sonic stopped being packaged with Sega Genesis the sales dropped a lot. The Genesis games also have inflated sales numbes due to all the re-releases these games had over the decades. Sonic became more popular after it went 3D and multiplatform. The people that say 2D Sonic was better is just a tiny vocal minority and journalists, 3D/Modern Sonic always had more fans and higher engagement than the Classic series, despite the lower critics scores. Even within the fandom, modern Sonic media is the biggest source for fan content produced, due to more complex storylines and worldbuilding, vocal tracks, characters etc. Sonic Mania costed 8 months to reach 1 million copies. This is terrible for a 20 dollar game that was touted as "the best Sonic game ever made". This alone might weighted on Sega parting ways with Taxman and going for Arzest instead and going for a 3D look.
Superstars was definitely a fumble. Didn't feel anywhere near as good as people were claiming it would, levels towards the end were annoying and gimmicky, OST was Abysmally generic outside of the jungle act 1 theme, with that annoying pseudo genesis soundfont they ALWAYS use for classic (Like what happened to Tee Lobes??). I also had a few bugs and crashes when trying to play local multiplayer.
Frontiers sold good because it looked AAA. Lets get straight. Its the same for Monster Hunter World. Wasn't doing numbers until it got that AAA look with World and that how Sonic Frontiers Sold its 2.5mil. I knew Sonic Superstar was gonna get ignore because it wasn't AAA. Which makes more baffling Sega didnt aim the game at Switch players and making PS and Xbox versions for people without a Switch. Also yes $60 for what it offered yeah they was banking of that Frontiers hype. Again Sega really goof this game by making $60, pushing this game to PS and PC players in terms of graphics (this game is not PS5 and barely PS4 level. Game should have ran the same across the board even on Switch), and released around Mario Bros Wonder and Spider-Man 2
It's still funny that I got flamed for saying Superstars had bad marketing compared to Wonder. Yeah? The multiplayer they focused so hard on, doesn't even work. Wonder has it in there with no issues and never had to flex it like it's this groundbreaking thing to have multiple people onscreen. Been playing 64 and Sunshine Online a bunch lately, y'all are missing out on a ton of fun that Nintendo will NEVER give...
Classic sonic is becoming a tired trend. It shouldn't be compared to frontiers but mania imo but still. I think all the bs they also did with pc also hurt it. Denuvo and epic games for online lol is just a terrible idea. Imo mania was just amazing.
@premydaremy true. I meant in the sense they are both classic sonic games but yeah I do think that price point was way too high for a classic sonic game. That again probz stopped people from buying or holding off for a sale
Personally, I think the game is pretty mid, the soundtrack is pretty hit and miss, and that price tag is absolutely ridiculous for a game I can finish up in like 3 - 4 hours.. Sega really should have just gotten the Mania Team and done a new Classic Sonic game with Pixel Art, and cut the price by half, and had Tee Lopes do the whole soundtrack, and the sales would have been different by a lot. It's Sega being Sega, they dont know how to properly do a good Classic Sonic game anymore, and they should just leave it to the fans who know what the Sonic Fans want... Mania does what Sega Don't.
They can only do so much when they stick to the classic style. It’s pretty clear that Frontiers was turning a new page for Sonic and from a business perspective it’s absolutely stupid that they didn’t follow up Frontiers better. Sega stays moving backwards even despite having taken such a giant leap forward with Frontiers

Let's call it like it is, Modern Sonic>Classic Sonic😌. In all seriousness though, Classic Sonic game are ultimately just more of the same, but with a new coat of paint, if you will. Whereas Modern Sonic with their scope, have the potential to bring something new to the table every time🤷🏿♂️. That said, for Superstars to be this expensive, is just too much😕
To be honest, i can see the value in both. Even if modern makes the scope bigger, it doesn't always pan out and acting as if games like Sonic 3 aren't ambitious and make the scooe bigger, it'd be lying. For what it is, classic is mostly consistent, modern is more experimental
@@Zeldafan-zy1pb Sonic Advance sold 36k in Japan first week. Advance 2 also sold 28k. Advance 3 sold 6k. Even at its lowest Advance still sold 2k more copies. You're wrong.
@@Zeldafan-zy1pb Yeah and all the Advance game sales were physical too. Superstars also sold less in Japan so what's your point? I'm making a case for Japan since we know how much Superstars sold first week in Japan. We don't know how much it sold digitally or worldwide. Tbh I have no idea where people are getting there sales numbers from outside of Japan. My point is that the Advance sold more than Superstars and besides Advance 3 they sold ok.
I knew from the start they overshot their hand when they put up the price for Superstars. 60 dollars for a game and it barely does anything different from the last, in fact, it ends up fumbling compared to the less expensive and arguably more enjoyable Mania. I also think it's a couple of things. Whenever you read the numbers Sonic is making they tend to use mobile games and movie content as the crutch. Two systems that have a much further outreach because of medium they're in (Free-To-Play/Ticket needed only). But as far as Sonic when it comes to the games, he typically doesn’t have the same star power like other gaming franchises. Sure, the fanbase may try to hype it up and act as if anything and everything this series produces post-2017 is "peak", but the general public finds it to be meh. Even to an extent with Frontiers, it didn’t have recent strong competition with any predecessors from its own series (Forces, RoL, Lost World). How many fans were just hoping the game would be "good"? Now take Frontiers, subtract fan bias, and compare it to those who follow a similar genres (Devil May Cry, BoTW/TotK) or other triple A titles and you see a clear difference in quality. Superstars is in a similar predicament, though unlike Frontiers, Superstars' competition within the series was Mania, and outside of it was games that actually presented themselves as 60/70 dollars games. While Superstars isn't "bad" the presentation for the game is low budget, they display yet another misunderstanding that you can't just slap on a Classic Sonic band-aid and expect all to love it, it doesn’t outpace any of the previous Classic games, and the pricing doesn’t justify the game.
I’m kinda surprised Spider man didnt seem to sell that well in Japan compared to Wonder, like I get it didn’t hit the same numbers at Wonder but according to this chart spider man sold 10% the amount of the sales of wonder in Japan, is it just me or does that sounds very bad?
Sonic Frontiers had over a year of hype and promotion while Sonic Superstars only had 4 months. I feel like Modern Sonic games are more popular and tend to sell much more than Classic Sonic games. Also 60 Dollars is way to much and Sonic Superstars is really a 40 Dollar game.
I just think it’s fucking hilarious how SEGA had the Balls to charge $60 for this game knowing damn well it wasn’t worth that, and to put it up against Mario Wonder and Spider-Man 2. Knowing their Greediness blew up in their face with many people choosing not to buy the game at all is just so nice to hear. 🤣
It’s only been less than two weeks. Give the game time to sell! Anyway, I prefer Sonic Superstars to Sonic Frontiers. The reason I say this is because I finished Sonic Frontiers with a few problems. For starters, Sonic Frontiers wasn’t finished and the last two islands, as well as the 2D sections on Chaos Island and some of the floating platform sections felt rushed. Also, I honestly think Sega got a little unwieldy with Sonic Frontiers. With update 3, I was glad to play as the other characters, but it was very disappointing that you could only play as them in the beginning of the update and the last portion was just another long only Sonic part. It also felt like they put less effort into the new Cyberspace stages in exchange for the tower fight segments, where I found myself often saying “why do I have to do this in a Sonic game?” And they were too challenging and not even fun. Yes, games should be challenging, but should also be fun. With Superstars on the other hand, I feel quite satisfied with pretty much every aspect. In fact, I think it is the best Sonic game since Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. The level design is pretty much perfect, with old-school platforming that proves how well the original games have aged, while also doing some new things with stage gimmicks. The cherry on top is the graphics, which are clean and portray different environments differently - some like Speed Jungle are realistic and detailed while others like Sky Temple are more cartoonish and abstract. Where Sage was an interesting concept and a compelling but bland and boring character, Trip feels like an actually interesting character who is as cute as she is interesting. So in conclusion, Sonic Frontiers is a productive course correction from the 3D games of the preceding 15 years, but 3D Sonic still has some room for improvement. Sonic Superstars, on the other hand, continues the consistency of 2D Sonic, although both of them hint at a bright future for their respective gameplay styles.
If Superstars flops, I wonder if this will mean a slowdown of Classic Sonic content. I'm a little worried about its Japanese performance, since Sega has shown they don't give a crap about anything unless it does well in Japan.
I mean does this really matter if people enjoy the game still then it’s still being played. I’m tired of these reviewers and these critics just play the games and have fun.
Look I like 2d sonic as much as the next guy, but hopefully Sega and or sonic team can see that Modern sonic is the best thing for the future of the franchise
I think because they decided to release it just 3 days before two massive game releases, in addition with such a high price tag, along side Sonic's inconsistent reputation, I'm not surprised that no one bought this game.
i think superstars should have been the same artstyle of some comic book skins that they had, they look amazing and should have been the artstyle of the game.
I think ultimately, there were two things; sonic superstar was released so closely to a game that it looks similar to and the ticket price was so high that many people who are probably interested, are going to wait for a price drop. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if Sega knew the price was too high, but they did this to make the price look even better. I also believe this game might have strong lifetime sales.
History really repeated itself. 2017: Sonic Forces got compared to Mania and Odyssey. 2023: Sonic Superstars is getting compared to Frontiers and Wonder.
Bruh, it’s such a darn shame that superstars turned out the way that it did. I was actually hype for this game but once I saw the gameplay and the price tag I decided to wait for a sale. I’m legitimately glad that the sales are as abysmal as they are (and I know for a fact that the $60 price tag is a big factor in that) it’ll show sega that they either really need innovate the classic formula or to drop him entirely and just focus on Modern sonic

It came out with the release of Super Mario Wonder and Spider-Man 2. If it came out after these games it might have done alright. (Not more than 40k but still decent enough) Since it came out around the same time everyone either just bought Spider-Man 2 or Super Mario Wonder. It’s like when a Sonic movie releases with no competition. When there is no major releases. Sonic dominates. When the next hype movie like a new Spider Man movie comes out around the same time. People will be split on which movie to see but you know people will choose Spider Man. It’s all about timing and unfortunately Superstars did not have that. Another thing, are you going to buy the new Spider-Man game with all kinds of new content and pushes the PS5 to it’s limits or an overpriced Classic Sonic game that isn’t really doing anything new or exciting. I personally believe the only reason Wonder out sold Superstars is the art style alone. There was nothing in Sonic Superstars that brought anything to the table. Mario brought the nice animation and art style and Spider-Man 2 brought literally everything else. What new thing did Sonic Superstars add to the table? Nothing. It’s just another Classic Sonic game. I’ll give it credit on my 4K monitor it looks amazing but so does Sonic Unleashed a game that came out in 2008. Sonic Generations looks amazing as well a game that came out in 2011. To me the only comparison I can make with this situation is Sonic Lost World. It’s a Sonic game that came out right after Generations which got a lot of hype. Didn’t really add much to the table. It looked amazing but it’s a Sonic game that just came and went. While people will still be playing Generations and Frontiers for years and years. At least these are my thoughts. I actually love Lost World and Superstars though still I’m just being honest. However, I would like them at some point to make another game in this style but fix a lot of the issues present and add more interesting things that would add something new and refreshing to the Classic Sonic formula.
Superstars is a pretty average game tbh. Those Boss Fights are def some of the worst in the series too. Whole game could use some personality, banter between characters, and some more love and care.
8:10 "...so there's no real excuse here to be, like: the competition, right?" I disagree. Sonic Frontiers was marketed & made to launch *alongside Tears of the Kingdom.* Sonic Frontiers dropped 20 dollars *two weeks after launch.* There was absolutely every indication that the game was meant to be an alternative to Tears of the Kingdom. But Tears of the Kingdom was delayed. I still believe that giving Sonic Frontiers space (and a price point) to breathe absolutely helped in the sales department. I'm still expecting them to drop the price of Sonic Superstars by $20 USD by Black Friday. But a month before or after *Super Mario Wonder* (which it is--virtually no doubt--a direct comparison to) would have given it the breath of air it needed during its launch window (which is usually during the first month of a game's life.) Month beforehand? Starfield? Mortal Kombat 1? Heck, even the indie titles that were all farming games wouldn't have been competition. Month after? Call of Duty? Mario RPG? No way a bunch of RPGs or Shooters are going to compare to Superstars. Give the game a month to breathe before/after Mario Wonder (and maybe that good price point), and it'd do wonders for the sales. At *least* 2-3 times the current launch. It's the basic lessons of marketing in a crowded environment, at least for video games. Sorry for the screed, but working at GameStop? The writing was on the wall *everywhere.* It was the same way with Forces (competing directly with Mario Odyssey); it was the same way with Team Sonic Racing (competing directly with the Crash Team Racing reboot); it's the same way here. Unlike other franchises that attempt to launch at the same time to draw sales from a competitor (like farming games during September), Sonic just doesn't move units away like that. It just doesn't, and I don't get why Sega tries to drive their sales into the ground at every turn.
@@YHUAN01 According to SteamDB, it also went on sale Dec. 19th, a week before Christmas. Had a time it was on sale each month after that until April 2023. Probably why I remember $40 being a constant price. ^^;

That isn't the same as lowering the price of the game. Those are just special sales so the point you made is moot.

Didn't even know that was happening. ^^; But also, my main point was how Sega's been constantly launching Sonic games in direct competition with games that crush them. The price point was only to assist the thesis of: Sega constantly launching Sonic games in direct competition with games that crush them. The only two games I think that haven't have been Origins and Colors Ultimate? At least since Forces, but I'm not exactly versed with every Sonic thing that's gone on... ...but do we have to turn this comment thread into history research? I think the art style looks cheap and it kind of didn't make me want to buy it. They probably should have stuck with the beautiful pixel art from Mania. Considering that Frontiers was already 2.5 in some instances.
I will say that Superstars is more likely to be downloaded than used physical, but I know I personally didn't care about getting it. Plus it honestly had a really low budget marketing cycle. I don't know if I really saw any official advertising for it, I really only saw people talking about it coming. Plus I never thought it would be worth $60.
Regardless of sales, Superstars was honestly enjoyable. And if the quality of that game is the bare minimum of what Sega will allow for future classic titles, then I'm not too worried.
It's a matter of pure quantity. Frontiers was 16 hours long game, Spider-Man 2 is 15, Mario Wonder is 8 and they wanted the same price for Superstars that lasts 3-4. Unless they figure out how to make a long classic Sonic game, like Frontiers figured out what to do with Modern Sonic, they can't expect similar sales. Besides, the most common sentiment about pre-release hype was "looks okay, I'll wait for sale". The only people who bought the game that I know are content creators. Nobody else, everyone else just either waits or uses Steam Remote Play Together. I know it's anegdotal so statistically insignificant, but without lower price or greater quantity they can't expect good sales.
So, from what I'm hearing, the reason Sonic superstars didn't do so well is the price. That's understandable. Sega should have at least 50 dollars the most(I am going based on the price in America) because 60 dollars is a lot for a game like this. I don't even think Sonic Mania cost this much when it first released.

I think people overstate how much damage 06 did to Sonic's brand.

*Never forget the undeserved positive reception Sonic 4 received when that garbage came out.*
Also, I'm honestly getting real sick and tired of seeing Classic Sonic nostalgia bait everywhere now. Thought Classic Sonic was only gonna appear in Generations and that was it, but I thought wrong, I guess.
It doesn't help when the marketing for these games are almost non-existent and Sega loves to rush its devs for those sweet holiday sales and stuff.
Personally overtime prefer modern over classic but the new character trip was cool
This game might actually outsell Maina. What he didn’t say is in the uk the game charted at 4 behind fifa.
@@Zeldafan-zy1pb Ew! Omg really!? Fucking explains alot!
Deserved honestly, I got about half way though Superstars before dropping it for Spider-Man
I hope superstars flops to show iizuka that generic 3D graphics won't carry a game.
Why is there still a debate for Mario vs. Sonic
As a classic sonic fanboy, this fucked up my day😞
Sega should of delayed superstars the second mario was announced
Classic sonic is becoming a tired trend. It shouldn't be compared to frontiers but mania imo but still. I think all the bs they also did with pc also hurt it. Denuvo and epic games for online lol is just a terrible idea. Imo mania was just amazing.
If they want to charge Frontiers amount then we should compare it to Frontiers lmao. Mania costed 1/3 of Superstars on launch.
@premydaremy true. I meant in the sense they are both classic sonic games but yeah I do think that price point was way too high for a classic sonic game. That again probz stopped people from buying or holding off for a sale
Im glad it sold poorly. Now they DEFINITELY wont do this again.
7:39 Nah that was outa pocket lmao
They can only do so much when they stick to the classic style. It’s pretty clear that Frontiers was turning a new page for Sonic and from a business perspective it’s absolutely stupid that they didn’t follow up Frontiers better. Sega stays moving backwards even despite having taken such a giant leap forward with Frontiers
lol This was just a spin off game, they just released a whole big update for frontiers too
@@KnucklesWTD it doesn’t matter that it’s a “spinoff”, it’s still the follow up game to the most successful Sonic game they’ve had in the last 20+ years. You don’t just cook up a goated game and then revert back to mediocrity (not to say the game is bad)

Can’t wait for Prem to use frontiers selling better than superstars as another argument against classic sonic that people definitely aren’t tired of hearing
@@philatio1744 Well, that's one way to look at it. As far as I'm concerned, if I have to choose between the two, I always lean towards Modern🤷🏿♂️

@@FloatingKites2422 Where did you get this information from?
It doesn't suprise that much. Usually japanese games sell more in Japan than Western games.
Ngl seeing classic Sonic flopping puts a smile on my face I’m sorry
I just think it’s fucking hilarious how SEGA had the Balls to charge $60 for this game knowing damn well it wasn’t worth that, and to put it up against Mario Wonder and Spider-Man 2. Knowing their Greediness blew up in their face with many people choosing not to buy the game at all is just so nice to hear. 🤣
At least Superstars' story didn't come off as mid-tier fanfiction. S2 really bombed hard there.
I’m glad Amy is playable but I’m waiting for a price drop XD Mario wonder looks like a more complete game
If Superstars flops, I wonder if this will mean a slowdown of Classic Sonic content. I'm a little worried about its Japanese performance, since Sega has shown they don't give a crap about anything unless it does well in Japan.

I had to remember that Sonic is not popular in Japan.
This was obvious because it was released the same week with Mario Wonder and Spidey 2 and imo it should have been 40$ game cz it's a AA game.

Superstars is a pretty average game tbh. Those Boss Fights are def some of the worst in the series too. Whole game could use some personality, banter between characters, and some more love and care.
8:10 "...so there's no real excuse here to be, like: the competition, right?"
I disagree.
But a month before or after *Super Mario Wonder* (which it is--virtually no doubt--a direct comparison to) would have given it the breath of air it needed during its launch window (which is usually during the first month of a game's life.)
Month beforehand?
It went on sale as part of black friday weekend. It then went back to full price. What are you on about?
@@YHUAN01 According to SteamDB, it also went on sale Dec. 19th, a week before Christmas. Had a time it was on sale each month after that until April 2023. Probably why I remember $40 being a constant price. ^^;

Crazy, right? and no only sometimes it was on a mid week madness whenever SEGA was promoting such. I got Kiwami 2 and Like a Dragon: Ishin! during those periods as well. Regardless of that. That isn't the same as lowering the price of the game. Those are just special sales so the point you made is moot.
@@YHUAN01 Are you feeling okay? You seem a bit hung up on proving this price issue incorrect. If you do a Google shopping search for Frontiers, you'll see the price at around $30 to $60. Oh hey, look: GameStop's doing another sale on some Frontiers copies. Didn't even know that was happening. ^^;
But also, my main point was how Sega's been constantly launching Sonic games in direct competition with games that crush them.
The price point was only to assist the thesis of: Sega constantly launching Sonic games in direct competition with games that crush them.
The only two games I think that haven't have been Origins and Colors Ultimate? At least since Forces, but I'm not exactly versed with every Sonic thing that's gone on...

TH-cam comments are so freaking weird. Freak me out every day I read them.
I am thinking, why sonic super stars ain’t selling well because people are waiting for it to go on sale because the price is to high
It's quantity AND quality. If all those games were the exact same length as Superstars, most people would still pick those games.
@@premydaremy Nah, they would pick something completely different and not be able to justify the price for any of them.
I think biggest issue is price. Especially with so many good games coming out at the same time. You’ve got to budget.
