The first 37 seconds of this scene is some of my favorite acting ever. Hoffman builds an entire character in all his glorious dickery in 37 seconds. Epic work.
As a true character actor he was ahead of almost everybody else in his generation by twenty years. Just imagine the movies he would haven given us once he had hit the usual age for character actors. Unfortunately, this will never be.

@RammingSpeed-lk8kk Freddie is the most authentic character because he has the least self-insight. He's a lout but he doesn't realize how boorish and crude he is. Tom can see it, but Freddie is too insulated by his wealth and privilege to know any better. Tom appreciates things that Freddie can't, but Tom wasn't born into the right class so he'll never really be accepted. Tom strives to be accepted into that world but never will be, even though, in most ways, he deserves to be. But Freddie was born into it. Freddie doesn't deserve it and he doesn't appreciate it, but he's got it anyway. Each one thinks they're better than the other. And in a way, each one is right, at least from their perspective.
@@kimberlyhonig8030 nah, it wasn't the worst movie ever if it's so-bad-it's-good. There are worst movies than it that don't fall into that category. They're just bad, and not in an enjoyable way.

This movie reminds me of Single White Female. I know the movies are on two different levels but it's just this obsessive infaturation with another person's life. It's about wanting so desperately to gain someone's approval and wanting to be them. These are such desperate characters.
more like Tom was a womanizer narcissist so the best way to approach him was pretending to be one. Freddy note that and do some mirror things imitating his own traces.
"If I'm late, think what her husband is saying" Tom is good at impersonations, and he says that same line while dragging Freddie to the car. I just don't get the joke.
Makes you wonder who's the actual villain here... Tom was troubled, but Freddy was a bullying snob, and Dickie seemed like a straight-out narcissist, especially with the way Marge described him.

Hoffman is brilliant it this, it's a small supporting role but he just eats up every scene. Mesmerizing to watch.

AMEN, WELL SAID 👏👏👏👏👏
He was phenomenal, as he was in pretty much any role in took on.
The authentically-jerky nature of Freddy is such a revealing contrast to the people-pleasing con-man of Tom

And looks stunning as well.

PSH just blows everyone out of the water acting-wise in these scenes.
True - he would have made a great Bond - in films such as From Ripley With Love, On Her Marge's Secret Service or No Tom To Die!
Why? Is he pretending to be someone else better than them, or do you just enjoy the particular character?
Incredible scene. What a character introduction!

God, Frederick is such a creep. Which is an amazing accomplishment considering that he's with a murderous psychopath.
He’s a pervy horny dude but the difference is he’s open about it and isn’t hiding it
