    I am 10 weeks post op of triple fusion and bone grafts, the most savage operation I’ve ever had, wish I had never had done. The pain is unreal

      Had ankle fusion in Oct 21 and Recently had subtalar fusion and agree the bone graft pain is exceptional. My subtalar fusion at 10 weeks was walkable but awkward. I now wear hoka outside and sketcher memory foam shoes inside which help with the awkwardness of not having a mobile joint.
      Good luck on your recovery.

      I'm 4 months out after my fusion. A plate, bolt and 7 screws. My ankle was collapsing on itself due to a deformity. Post op was so bad for 3-4 weeks. I thought it'd never get better. Every week feels a little better. I hope all is well with you.

    Thankyou for this.
    I'm 5 weeks in after my ankle fusion procedure. I'm still wearing a cast and not allowed to put weight on it yet.
    I have about 7 more weeks. At least I can transition to a walking boot soon.
    I can tell already that things will be better.
    For me it was bone on bone, only 20 percent cartilage left, and my leg bone had shifted inward causing severe pain from an aggrivated tendon.
    I'm looking forward to a new start and being able to do things I had stopped doing.
    I was concerned about a limp but I'm encouraged by your video.
    Thankyou again.

    I traumatically injured both my feet and my back earlier this year in a failed self-termination attempt and I’m on route to getting ankle fusion surgery to be able to walk again. This has worried me greatly as I’m fairly young (early 20s) and I work a lot of jobs within the restaurant industry. Your videos have helped reassure me greatly and I feel like I’m in a way better place going into this surgery now. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart (and foot).

    47 year old male osteochondral talus allograft with implantation here. I am 5 weeks post-op. Still non-weight bearing. Hoping this sorts out my pain. I am optimistic and feeling good. Though maybe one day I'll need fusion if arthritis is too much to bear in old age. Good to see this is a viable solution. Thanks.

    Ankle fusion can resolve pain for a lot of people. I've had to have subtalar fusion also. Any uneven surfaces caused me agony even after ankle fusion so 18 month after ankle fusion my wife and I agreed to subtalar fusion. Can now walk over uneven surfaces without too much pain. Read up on fusion v replacement. Each case is personal to you. My case injury 1993, 1999 was informed I had several snapped ligaments and multiple fractures. Carried on for 11 years in army. Damaged done. CRPS diagnosis in 2004 which still fires my nerves wrongly and keeps you in constant pain. Reason I opted for fusion is currently the recovery and stability rate is better. I wish everyone the best in their decisions.

    Hiya, thank you for sharing! I had ankle surgery over 20 yrs ago (1996) and that procedure lasted all the way until March 2022 when I unknowingly injured my ankle and before this recent injury I've enjoyed skydiving, paragliding, bungie jumping, ziplining, basketball, tackle football, multiple obstacle course rally's & my favorite hiking in the mountains of Arizona and Nevada. In April I was told the old hardware was a bit loose and I had a procedure to tighten or remove/replace old hardware (1 screw and a broken K wire), surgeon recommended tightening the screw & prescribed physical therapy. 8 months into therapy and minimal progress so I decided to get a 2nd and 3rd opinion. The other two specialists recommended ankle fusion. The 3rd specialist explained the entire procedure, I asked about recovery time and physical therapy and was told 4-5 months recovery time and 0 time for physical therapy. Three days later I decided to bite the bullet and have it done. On 12/20/22 I had the fusion procedure done, now 13 days later I notice I still retained a bit of up/down motion but hard to range due to the soft cast and splint from my knee down. I'm curious to know, did you do any physical therapy after your procedure?

    • @anklefusionguy
      @anklefusionguy  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey. Sounds like you’re doing well. After the fusion you will find that your foot moves quite a lot in order to make up for the lost movement in the ankle. I remember doing an exercise where you sit down, have your foot flat on the floor and do heel raises. Tbh that’s the only one I remember. Other than that I just got to the gym and started doing general exercises to strengthen my legs

    I had a paragliding accident 3 yrs back and now after a few surgeries, the pain wont leave me. As soon as I sit down, it freezes and then without loosening it, I cannot walk. Still can't walk more than 15 mins without pain. Surgeon thinks fusing is next step. I am inclined to go ahead as I am frustrated with having to live with the pain (despite extensive physiotherapy and exercises) but at the same time, slightly apprehensive thinking what if I still have pain after fusion, which will be at a cost of reduced mobility. Will the pain reduce noticeably after fusion? Thanks for your videos. Really helpful!

    Why did you have the ankle fusion surgery? I have foot drop. I had a tendon lengthening that helped to lift the foot better however still walking with a very bad limp swinging my leg. You look like you are walking perfectly normal. I love that you can even walk in flip flops. I don’t have enough strength in my foot to keep my foot in the sandal.

    • @anklefusionguy

      My surgery was from a bad football (soccer) injury where I snapped my ligament and damaged the cartilage in my ankle. Sorry I don’t know much about foot drop. • @anklefusionguy
      @anklefusionguy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it was about 16 weeks before I was walking without crutches. It takes a while. I think the swelling took a bit longer. There’s still a little bit at the joint but I think it’s more like scar tissue. Doesn’t bother me or cause pain. The pain but I can’t really remember sorry, probably similar time to how long it took to walk maybe a little longer whilst my ankle adjusted to weight bearing. The muscles in and around the ankle/ lower leg have to get stronger which takes a little while

I did an 11km hike in Sri Lanka a fortnight ago. Which I was very proud of

      @@anklefusionguy No need to apologies and I am glad you did reply when you were able. I have been struggling for years to find shoes that could help with walking pain that may occur with my fused ankle. I still have mobility with my toes on foot with fused ankle this may help with my hiking abilities. I can hike but not anywhere near the pace I could before my accident. Plus, I know have to use hiking poles. I have been contemplating bare feet or minimalist shoes. My brother (after reading born to run) uses minimalist shoes and mentions that he noticed his balance was improved, his foot muscles greatly increased, and the pain in his knees no longer exists.
      I am grateful for your reply and videos. It helps to see positive results as well as a point of view on footwear that has worked best for you. So many people have fused ankles you would think there were more content on the subject of shoes and abilities reached post fusion surgery.

      In short: A bad football injury resulted in me severely damaging my ankle cartilage. I had 4 operations over a span of 6 years to try save the ankle joint e.g. 1 operation took a cartilage graft from my knee.
      Unfortunately none of the operations stopped the severe pain in the joint and so my final option was ankle fusion. Ankle replacement was another option but that seemed to be mostly offered to older patients and was not as robust as the fusion. I will do a video to give more details but hopefully this helps.

You are very brave to firstly have this procedure and secondly, to share your experience. I have just had an ankle arthroscopic procedure but I’m doubtful that it has worked well. I’m still in a lot of pain when walking. My next logical step would be a fusion. But, I am “scared” of committing to it. Your video has given me a good idea of what questions I should consider asking my surgeon. Thank you.
    May I ask on a scale of 1-10 how much pain you were in prior to fusion? My pain score is 7/8.

    • @anklefusionguy
      @anklefusionguy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Dave. To be honest I had several operations to try and ‘save’ my ankle but by the final one it had actually made the pain worse. I was unable to walk and put weight through my ankle without crutches, the pain was unbearable. Pretty much a 9 or 10. So for me the decision was easy, I wanted to be just be able to walk pain free. Sounds like you’re in a similar situation but it is a difficult decision of course. I would check with your surgeon if there are any final options and if not then fusion would be the way forward. Good luck

      I am the same. Years ago I had an accident that left me with a dropped foot. Over the years, I ended up walking on the side of my foot and it was getting worse. It was suggested that I have ankle fusion. I had read up on loss of leg length, but it was generally mooted around 8mm which is do-able. However my leg ended up around 28mm shorter. When I stand I can't balance my weight and feel like I'm standing in a hole, so I end up standing on one leg mainly. I get exhausted so quickly because of it.
      I think what makes matters worse , is my foot is set too high an angle as well. This means I can only wear very flat shoes without any heel at all otherwise I am walking and standing on my heel only and that is terrible after a very short time. I have the shoes modified at the shoe repair shop who can put some height in all along, in fact more towards the front to try to compensate. He is quite good at it now!
      The problem is finding the right shoes. I have spent lots of money only to find out they weren't exactly right. I tend to stick to one brand/pattern when I find it, but eventually they become obsolete and the search starts again.
      I'm in the middle of that now, and came across this video when I was looking to find any kind of advice or groups who may be around who may have ideas, because it really isn't pleasant if it happens to you.
      It's that debilitating I want to get my other leg shortened to compensate, but sadly there is no chance of that. Don't ask me about kneeling either.
      The up side if there is one, is I don't get the same pain I had previously, and I know it would have got worse if left, so it had to be done at some point.

    • @anklefusionguy
      @anklefusionguy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You’re welcome. Yes the fusion took away the sharp pain inside the joint (cartilage damage) but I have discomfort when walking bare foot. It’s more like a dull pain of the muscles around the ankle. I don’t think everyone has this, I know some people can walk bare foot and maybe even jog. The fusion has enabled me to walk without severe pain but for me it has limitations. I can walk up to 12,000 steps a day in comfortable footwear (MBTs) but after this I am in pain and need to rest. On the other hand if you google ‘Steve Backshall’ (British Naturist and TV presenter) He is a very positive story for ankle fusion. He still walks up mountains, trains hard at the gym and even won a celebrity dancing show with ankle fusion!

    Thank you SO much for these videos, I just stumbled across your channel because I've had four surgeries so far and my O.G. surgeon said he thinks it's time for a fusion. But I have another surgeron saying he doesn't think I should and he wants to do another reconstruction attempt first but... tough decision. Can't do environmental fieldwork for my job anymore or Muay Thai with the current state (chronic peroneal subluxation, torn peroneal retinaculum, tendonitus, lot of calcification and scarring and bulging of peroneal... 🙃). Basically my OG surgeon was like "your peroneal tendon is crap and at this point any tendon repair surgery other than a fusion will just result in it rupturing again and needing another one". Trying to figure out if I'll ever be able to hike for my job again or practice Muay Thai (even modified I'd take lol) after. Your channel is VERY helpful in needing to think about all of this... esp since I need to make a decision ASAP lol. Anyone in the comments relate?
