used to watch the motorbike scrambling on Saturday afternoons on grandstand and one week they showed this, liked it ever since, taking a car where its not meant to go,
Watched this when I was young, many years ago ! From memory engines used then were Ford E93a, 1172 cc side valves. Cars were similar and had " fiddle " brakes. Still looks like a good day out and good fun. No alloy rims then !
It is very cheap and great fun. You can buy and old car with a trailer for less than £3000 that will run alongside the top drivers. The skill bit is up to you.
Your local alternative would probably be rock bouncer racing. The idea is based on the same thing, but rock bouncers are built in the most american way possible (loud, v8, loads of power, 4x4, etc.). Also with rock bouncers i'm not sure if skill matters as much, because they very often just stay on the limiter and roll over quite a lot aswell.
@@Darkipod Sorry, i didn't want to sound mean. Also yes, on the other hand they are too different to compare directly, but i don't think that this particular sport would have a market in the states.

The spare is a requirement in the rules. It shifts some weight to the back of the car and yes, they often get used. The tyres on the car are usually inflated to between 3 to 5psi. So they get ripped off the rims and puncture easily.

It's a very slow speed sport. probably never get above 20mph. usually about 5 or 10mph. It's not classed by MSUK as a Speed Event, so helmets, cages etc etc not required. There are very few accidents, usually getting burnt on the exhaust!!
Yes, now WoS is long gone and all we get is zillionaire F1 drivers, Footballers on £200k a week and women's football shove down our throats. Oh for the days when we has stock car racing, scrambling and even fishing on TV. Oops i put FISTING but corrected my Fruedian slip.
They are Sporting Trials cars. Engines up to 1650cc. Rear wheel drive only. No locked or limited slip diffs. Only specific road tyres allowed. Individual hand brake for each rear wheel, to assist traction. www.nptcc.org.uk scroll to bottom of the page.
No. It would be more dangerous. The course would have to be steeper with more chance of accidents. The whole idea is to get further up the hill over a series of hills than anyone else. Just making everyone able to get to the top is not a challenge. It isn't a spectator sport. It's about subtlety of throttle control. th-cam.com/video/cO3YHg-0DC4/w-d-xo.html
Mate some of them looked like they are open diff so what would tires do anyway?. But just guessing this is only a bunch of blokes keeping a tradition alive.
The choice of tyres (and other technical limitations) is the entire point of this. The idea is not to make it easy, but to make it hard to complete a round. It's not a race but a trial!
@@foleybrown Seems to me it's not even that important who wins. I don't imagine there's a huge prize to be won. Just an exciting day out for all involved. I also like to look at the contestants. That looks like a shit tonne of fun. no diff lock, shitty tires,... That´s how you separate off-roaders from walletwarriors.
It is very, very difficult. Go see the new Gold Star event on my channel. Held in bluebell wood. Slipperier than a very slippery place.
It's crazy how much traction they are getting on those rear tires in such slippery conditions.

Those things look a little too much like coffins.
Why do they not use an offroad tire? And if they have to have 2 people in the car why dont they build them to fit two people inside the car?
It's in the rules, makes it harder.
If you used an off road tyre the hills would have to be made much more difficult. They are dangerous enough thanks.

Just as well they are wearing beanies and hoodies to protect their heads, given that their rollbars seem to have been mislaid.
