I've watched lots of extreme motorbikes and 1500-hp monsters climbing up a wall of sand, but this made me smile more. Thoroughly entertaining and has just the right amount of competition (=not much😁) GREAT upload🏆
A simple low buck way to enjoy the smell of old cars and steaming mud! Brings back memories of my late childhood ❤ Hope you guy’s are having fun. It’s the true spirit of competition. At one time this wasn’t off roading. It was normal transportation when most “roads” looked like this!
Great day James , thanks for the excellent video , It's really hard trying to get good footage of everyone and compete. Really appreciate your efforts . I'll find you next year and give you a chance for some in car footage.
I’ve never seen this kind of Motorsport before, but it looks like so much fun! I’d love to drive around that course myself in a beautiful car from the past, dressed in nice traditional hunting clothes and a lovely motorist leather coat from that era! Preferably from Aero Leather, wearing nice Trickers Country boots! Oh this would be a lovely event, I’m jealous. If I could join such a club in Germany I’d instantly would!
There is a lot of friendship and helping getting each other unstuck , I have to scrub my flying jacket after every event as I always get covered in mud!
This sport is quite common in the UK and is a very cheap way to have fun, It’s like a car version of motorcycle trials. What. a great selection of mid 20th century British tin. One even looked like a pastiche of a very early Morris Minor !! Everybody was having great fun..
A few years ago I saw video of Cotswold Trial (UK), something very similar to Balcairn but for all classics till 90s even. It is great. I would even buy a 80yo or 90yo car to compete. Unfortunately in my country (PL) there are plenty of off-road rallies, but in reality it looks like swamp crawling in a monsters build from the scratch more than any off-road fun for the people. This is why I love Balcairn Trial. It is awesome.
Most drivers have built and modified their own cars , the Austin 7 running gear is preferred and the rules state , pre 1960 and road tyres. An old wreck can cost as little as $600nzd .
Yes , period road tyres only , no locked diffs , no fiddler brakes , front engines rear wheel drive. , no hp limit or weight limit. The light cars do the best.

Those little ones are are just nimble as all get-out, can't believe how well they actually perform. The rig I liked was that long lumbering six-cylinder, that had to have been a beaut when it left the factory. Anybody happen to know what it is?
Great video. Looks like a lot of fun and much more civilized than what we have here in the USA. What sat next to the pilot of the one with no bodywork at 19:10ish? Looked like another engine.
Yeah man you get it. Finishing the course is the point, but mix in the added challenge of period correct tyres and an under powers motor and finishing is quite unlikely . A perfect recipe o for fun.
I actually don’t know the rules. You will note they are mainly pre war cars and many had added lightness with body and doors missing. Some are fully road legal and others are ‘specials’ just for the series of events like this.
@James Webb Superleggera! 😂 I've got to ask you, though, where on earth is there such an abundance of parts? If I thought it were so, I'd be tempted to daily drive a better kept example of one of these. Far more interesting to me than a Tesla, or even a late model Toyota.
Must be running pre 1960 running gear, Period road tyres , no fiddler brakes or diff locks , front engined , rear wheel drive, limits on how far back the motor can be moved and driver must be seated in front of the rear axle. 2 classes , Short , less than 90 inch wheelbase and , Long , more than 90 inch.
Need some help guys I know they do this kind of thing here in the UK and used to love watching them on TH-cam But for the love of me I can't remember what this kind of rally cross is called Any help would be appreciated !!
18:23 what the hell is that? Two engines? Thought trials cars could only be two wheel drive? Or is he using them both to drive the rear and spreading the weight ? Would love to see a close up of that car
According to James' answer to Papa Toms Thoughts, there are some road-legal cars here. The cars being so light, it shouldn't be any problem transporting non-road-legal cars to these great events tho.
The event is called a “Trials” and originated in the UK. There are rules and cars are put into categories based on wheelbase. Period tyres only, so this eliminates knoblie or off road tyres. This is true analogue Motorsport.
Weight is your enemy, the best trials cars weigh under 400kgs and a big engine would just spin the wheels and go nowhere , although Model A fords don't do too badly.
What a lot of you do not realise just how much skill is required to complete a set course. Most of the vehicles are custom made. Notice how some can compleat a course and some can’t. Why do you think some can and some can not.
Also Stephen, sometimes the same car has two drivers and one driver is better than the other. I know my old car would see the mud and just sit down and spin is wheels. Too heavy for these events.
In my case , its because I cant help myself making roostertails, I know that less throttle would give me more traction, but where's the fun in that! I also modify my car every year, and every year I improve a little.
That, my friend, is the challenge. Off road or knoblies are not permitted in the rules. The small lightweight cars with brave (or stupid) drivers have a clear advantage. There are different classes and they are asked on the wheelbase.
No it’s not a real Bugatti. There are a couple of real ones in town that still get driven, however this is someone having fun and making their own body.
First guy through made it to the top and couldn't turn round on the slope, subsequent drivers were stopped at the max points marker where they could back down safely.
hi Lionel, Just remember that some of these cars were scrap, and the owners have rebuilt them purely to compete in these events. A small number of the cars are legally permitted on the road, but most a "Trial's Specials".
Homebuilt Austin7 Special , alloy body hand rolled ( look up " English Wheel") , built by Avon Hyde similar to an Austin "Ulster " . Austin made Nippy , Ulster , Brooklands , Swallow , Tophat , Ruby and a few others . Worth looking up Austin7 Rubber Duck , a very famous car here in New Zealand.
Each of the 6 sections starts from a different number , so everyone gets a chance to start 1 stage in the first 5. Sometimes the first cars help dry the course, and the later cars have the advantage.
Hi, in case you didn't know this is all happening in New Zealand. More accurately on a private farm in North Canterbury about 50km north of Christchurch. there are classes based on age and wheelbase. knoblie or mud tyres are not permitted.
So if i get that right it's using vintage cars in a rather abusing way in a competition with rather ridoculously strictand complicated rules, not being alowed to use proper tires or off road cars to do a very slow, underpowered off road race. Most british thing i saw today...
Sadly soon all combustion cars and trucks including classic busses will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Car washs will be forbidden too because they are climate killers, now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. (BABVVEN & TEBBVEN & BEFVO laws)!!
Wow, I had no idea the EU were going so far with the phasing out of ICE petrol and diesel engines. Battery electric is still not the solution, because the technology is simply replacing one horrible finite resource with another that is just horrible to extract (Lithium).
Good Lord! What on earth do they intend to replace it with? Woefully inadequate renewables? It's economic suicide. The transportation system, of basic groceries, in the first instance, will collapse, together with the shutting down of farms. These maniacs mean to starve you. I'd think about getting together with your neighbours over this. It's all rather serious.
This is very interesting, all of these vehicles are different. Meanwhile the U.S: - Lets weld car frames and install the same engines with the same gearboxes, fabricate a fake plastic fiber outer shell that looks like Toyota, Chevy, Ford etc and race around in circles 180 mph. Or lets create classes where all vehicles are the same in the pro mod setup and race in the straight line to see which one wins. Boring as F#ck nothing genuine, the most popular motorsports trends in the U.S. are predominately fake or at least overexaggerated.
I'm not teally sure what I'm watching, but it looks like heaps of fun.
