Cool Lesson, you can add the open E, F# before your G# Mixolydian to get Sense of how the modes tie together. Making it E major, playing from the six note up the scale is E with your pinky, continue up the scale. Just a different way to look at it. E , Ionian on the 12 fret ties together with your G# scale on the 16 th fret. As always thanks for your great lessons.

One of Marty’s great strengths as a teacher is that, while often playing at the top of his game, illustrating the possibilities, he also he keeps it slow and understandable for students. Some teachers get too flashy and hard to follow.

  • @RedLion88

Great stuff. This is more of a lesson on using B major pentatonic and G# Phrygian to access notes of B-mixolydian, both modes of E-major. I prefer to play B-Mixolydian where 6th string B is the root note kind of like a Mixolydian "home row," and navigate away into these other options, but these are nice tricks for using more of the fret board. As Marty calls it, Tasty Zone. Also, the upper portion of the E-major scale starting on the 6th string puts you squarely in the BB Box key of B. The B-BB Box!

Thank,Marty. I have an actually relevant question. I think the key is E and the tonal center is B, but I'm not sure which chord(s), if any, are dominant 7s. I guess the B is, because it's the 5, but from there I'm not sure if it matters either way.
