Marty, I am amazed at your ability to both explain and demonstrate these concepts in a way where we can instantly put into action. I haven't even played it yet, and I feel like I just became a better musician by watching this. Damn this is good. Thank you Marty.
Wow. Explaining those intervals of c maj all the way up the neck and how they relate to the pentatonic shapes really unlocked the door for me, thanks man
@@davulcu64st since these are triads you are going to be using ONLY 3 notes, so that triad is like just a fragment or piece of the bigger b chord shape, a reason you do that is because triads just have a different kind of sound then the bigger and fatter chords, they can also be used for other things like soloing and stuff later on when you get into targeting the chord tones when soloing
I'm from down south. I grew up in the Mississippi Delta. I'm so much enjoying playing and learning thanks to you. Thanks to people like you, Marty, I'm inspired. My life long I've wanted to be involved with music. Of all the art forms, music is by far the one that I take most to like a beaver in water. Growing up music was as much a part of my life as was breathing. I can't imagine being who am without music, or how I would have survived, against the greatest of odds, if it wasn't for music. The many sounds are so familiar, and so interrelated, the gospel, blues, jazz, country, rock and roll, surrounding me, beginning as young child and growing up. Looking forward to doing covers of music seemingly forgotten or put aside for some reason or another which was familiar to me growing up. Much of it, I never hear anywhere. I appreciate the contribution that you're making by way of making your work and knowledge accessible to the many. Keep up the good work. Someday I hope to share with you some of what I accomplish. God willing.
HOLY FUCK. Marty you just split my wig. Straight up just watching this video has increased my guitar playing level. I’ve been taking my music theory class at my community college seriously and watching you apply what i (somewhat) now know to guitar playing has totally made these concepts click. Well Done Marty i’m a huge fan. i am tense with excitement.
In case no one has mentioned this in the comments, but his II - V progression in D Dorian is what Pink Floyd used on “Any colour you like”. This chord progression can be really groovy and can be used for “noodling” practice or just “spacing out” haha.
I've been playing guitar for 20 years and struggled to solo and understanding the fret board. I practiced the crap out of the minor pentatonic scale or would walk up and down scales and it always sounded pretty elementary. I'Ve heard these terms before but never understood how they relate to each other. Last night this video helped me "unlock" something and it all became clear! Thanks so much!
Hey Marty, listening from Australia. I am a blind guy playing lovely guitars but find your lessons so helpful and revealing. The clarity of your work is superb and always always appreciated.
Really meaty lesson - thanks Marty! You start with " D Dorian" is C major moved up to the 2nd = D minor" and go from there. Very useful to know, since all the notes and chords are the same, and you do a great job connecting to the familiar pentatonic and actually getting us *using it.*. Just wanted to say that I found it helpful to also connect Dorian to "same as the minor scale but with a major 6th," i.e., think of it terms of intervals. In some contexts that gives me other familiar, practical references. May be helpful for some people. (Generally, if you know your major , minor, and pentatonic scales, all the modes are single-note or single-interval deviations from these.)
Marty I can't wait to get home and play with these concepts, thank you Marty for all that you do and being here for is right here on Marty Music. Your the king of TH-cam Marty!!!!
The light bulb is getting brighter. Best explanation of Dorian I've heard yet. And that trick of taking the first two notes (B and E strings) from each chord of the key and playing them up and down the neck was really an eye opener! Makes perfect sense so it stuck with me. And it sounds great to boot. Thanks Marty. You are much appreciated!
Thank you for these mode lessons. Learning scales at age 56 was way intimidating at first. The more I watch your videos the more it makes sense. I love when I am watching one of your lessons and the light bulb goes off and I get it!
Love how you break down a simi advanced concept. This simplifies complex sounds we've all heard but can't find. Just to be clear... Marty is simply moving up one chord at a time to play in the next mode. This is not changing keys...he's still using the same chords. If he moves up one chord and changes keys the majors and minors even the 7th diminished would chance orders. He's using the key chords the same. That's the unique sound of each mode. When he plays the scales from a chord he's playing not the key...it works but gives different feels. Very cool Marty. Thanks
Great video, in many aspects. The connection between chords and scale is super useful, and simple examples of picking few notes here and there to build a nice progression is also a fantastic, though simple, way to build beautiful phrases. It's early in the morning here, but cant wait people to wake up so i can play. Great impro, great tone, great touch and feeling. Clearly one of the very best video on dorian mode. Huge thanks!
1 year in and this video helped me so much. I am self taught and i’m already grasping this concept pretty well with how scales work, the tones that make those scales stand out as well. This helped me get a better understanding to this mode. Once you know your majors, it’s very easy to find the others. Thanks Marty!!
Another great lesson Marty. We get frustrated because we want to be there but we must enjoy the ride on the way. You my friend are becoming a very good jazz player.
Super helpful, Marty. Thanks so much. You have a very direct and logical way of teaching, and not leaving a student bored, or left waiting. This is exactly what I was looking for with better knowledge of the Dorian scale. You take the path of learning much further by relating the scale to where and how it fits with the C major scale (and how to find your place if you get lost. Nice playing as well, which makes learning all the more rewarding, and infectious. Peace, man!
I've been playing for over forty years now, am a pretty good player, but I'm not much of a theory guy. I had learned the harmonic Chordal scales and Dorian 'position' on the fretboard over thirty years ago, always use it, but I had no idea that it comes down to this theoretically. After watching this a whole new world has opened up to my playing and approach to soloing. Forty years later I'm finally able to wrap my stubborn head around how this all revolves the root chord and how that major root scale can be put to use in any of the harmonic scale chords of that root (if that makes any sense). Omg!. Thank you!
Marty, this is one of your best lessons, IMO. I hope we can expand on this, with perhaps additional " devices", and/ or some review showing how these connect to the minor pentatonic, in the various positions. Thanks!!
Hey Marty, thanks for another awesome video! I've been getting back into playing regularly (50 years +/- guitar friend, too long off the neck!) and your videos have helped break the old muscle memory stuff I've been fighting.. Thanks Marty!
I watch a lot of this type of video, and your solos/jams are by the most musical. Many people noodle around, but yours sound like an actual pro solo. The explanation Was great too! Thanks for another great vid!
Fantastic! Been trying to figure out this mode business and you made it really hit home. Jamming along with you(not nearly as well) in C major and D minor pentatonic and it really sounded good. Thanks so much!
Marty, this video has given me a TREMENDOUS amount of tool to work with..definitely going to this on my daily regimen to watch a few days straight to absorb inside and out..thank you! Keep rockin!
Jeeze, Marty. That solo at the end was bitchin! I always refer fledgling guitarists to you but man, even some of us seasoned players pick up decent technique here. This was the best.
Right on Marty, i'm always learning from you , your teaching style is superb but, this one man, this lesson just sent my guitar playing into overdrive as I recently just found the Dorian 2-5... and now the Dorian Mode & Pentatonic in C Scale, "Light Bulb moment dude!" right on keep those modes coming!
Marty, I recently learned about harmonizing chords from the major scale ant was eye opening. I've also recently grasped how Modes can be used with those chord progressions. This lesson on Dorian concepts will only serve to step my game up even more and help me to better understand these concepts. Please post some more modal concept videos! This is great stuff!
I like THIS kind of method of combining theory of different stuff, many lessons dont do this but then we cant put them togueter by are selves because we are begginners with theory so then there are to many different lessons and it gets wayyyy overwelming. so keep on combinning everything because eventualy we will get it faster this way. people want to make hundreds of videos to make more money with views or they think people need to seperate things to understand but that not true. it just seems more complicated. hope you understand this lol and keep making great lesson that wont be waisted time us and for yourself. I loved this one and I will study it because I am realy finaly starting to understand.
What would we do without you, I've been watching your videos for awhile now and I can truly say you have helped my progression big time in the last 12 months!! Love the new theory videos, thank you brother 💪🏽💥
Marty you always push me to improve man, any time I get in that little rut I know if I find you for a little theory I'm gonna get recharged, thanks brother, you do us all a great service
wooo marty!!! you just made modes click in my head!!! now i can actually apply this to my playing way more effortlessly. youre a God send bro. keep up the hard work man it shows in your playing and teaching
Man, I wish I could play half that well, and I love that Dorian sound. I may get there someday if MM keeps posting lessons like this one explaining and showing how it's done!
Thanks again Marty for great content. The last two years I've gone from struggling with the the pentatonic scales to covering Clapton Material, rhythm and leads and creating improve solos on backing tracks. I have a 24 fret Gibson SG Special and a Line 6 Spider V 60 amp modelling amp with the FVB Shortboard MKII foot pedal. Great fun. Thanks for your dedicated help Marty.
Thank you for showing an easy and comprehensive way to understand the fretboard. You’re really great Marty, I want individual lessons. So move here! lol
Im getting my head round this stuff by finding little 3 or 4 note licks and doing them over and over to the progression till I know where to find each note....then find another.....etc.....Hope this helps. Lots of stuff to get your head/fingers around in this lesson >And Marty that last jam was so cool and helpful, Im listening to it evryday and letting it run through my brain...like listening to a bird singing!

The stuff with the thirds on the E and B string as help in soloing is maybe THE BEST guitar advice I've ever heard.
I agree
can someone put a timestamp on where marty demonstrates this?
