  • I made a video last year about 10 different mechanisms used in trick-taking games. It had LOADS of intros to some great games.
    • How Trick Taking card ...
    But since then, I've played many, many more examples of the genre. So the games in this video are not all brand new in 2019, but they've all been released (or re-released) within the last 18 months or so. Here's my top ten!

    Thanks for the kind words about Trickster! You may enjoy Joraku, a trick taking game that drives a fascinating area control and timing game.

    I agree with you about Voodoo Prince - an excellent game with simple rules. Thoroughly enjoying your videos.

    Great video. I can vouch for Crime Hotel and Spring Rally. They’re both fascinating and unique.

    I really liked the idea of this video «new to me», makes for a gold mine for discovering more game titles. After listening to how you speak of trick taking games (also a favorite genre of mine) I decided to give your THROWN a try. I love rolling dice in games and the push your luck/risk element in Thrown appeals to me. So I just ordered it and I’m excited to give it a try! Love your channel and the way you sum up game mechanics and how you use certain games to illustrate it all. Great stuff.

      Glenn Nystad Thanks Glenn! Hope you find plenty to explore in Thrown. It’s a pretty niche game because it messes with the trick-taking formula in a huge way, and the push-your-luck aspect is a big part of the gameplay. But it sounds like it might be up your street!

      Adam's Boardgame Wales I really can’t wait to try it. And I’ll let you know pronto how it went. Thanks also for drawing my attention to Voodoo Prince and Vampire Queen. I’m also ordering those.
      Have you tried Eternity? It is a trick taking game which I got recently and it was an immediate hit for my family. Brilliant stuff.

      Paul Incao Hi Paul! Fool would have made the list too - but I covered it in the previous video (and Foppen is a few years old) so I left it off!
      Strong showing from Stronghold/IBC/Action Phase in the card game range though!!
      Trickster is such a great concept - I remember reading about it on Daniel’s blog long before it was published, and being impressed with the ingenuity of the system!

    hi, i've just found your channel and immediately watch many videos. I love trick taking games. Do you prefer voodoo prince or vampire queen? i suggest you to look at texas showdown from amigo spiele, is a new trick taking game with a clever twist

    • @AdaminWales
      @AdaminWales  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Federico Gelsi I like both very much. Vampire Queen feels more like a climbing game (like Haggis or Tichu) so they aren’t all that similar really. Voodoo Prince is a very simple trick taking game but the twist is excellent. I couldn’t choose between them. I haven’t tried Texas Showdown yet - although I have a copy. I’ll try it soon! :)

    I explored the trick taking mechanic last year. I came up with something interesting, but no one in my game group plays or knows trick taking, including me. Plums is my favorite and my family likes it too, I developed a 2 player variant for that which we use. Would a game such as Love Letter be a trick taking variant, in the non-traditional sense?

    • @AdaminWales
      @AdaminWales  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kevin Queen No, I don’t think Love Letter really fulfils the criteria to make it a trick taking game - even at a stretch! Plums barely makes the cut!! :) But I count it as a trick-taker because each player plays a single card and then the ranks are compared. It has little else in common with a traditional trick-taking games.

    If I want to get Skull King , should I get Schmidt or Grandpa's Beck + Legendary expansion? Thanks. Nice review! I don't have any Trick taking game yet, wonder which one I should get first.

    Have you ever played the Japanese game himmin? Plays with 52 card deck inc jokers. Think you'd like it.

    • @AdaminWales
      @AdaminWales  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jo Mc I haven’t heard of Himmin, but from a brief Google search, it looks like it might be the same game (or very similar) as The Great Dalmuti. I have a copy of that game but haven’t played it yet!

    • @jomc8768
      @jomc8768 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AdaminWales just looked on Wikipedia and yes that is the game. I clearly can't spell. I play a rural variant my Japanese friend learnt at school with few variations including wild jokers, revolution, and runs within suit. It feels very luck driven but we played with some 5 year olds in a small school in middle of nowhere in Japan and they whipped us. Timing is very important. Hope the version you have is as good!

      If I wanted to try Claim, should I get 1 or 2 to start?

    • @AdaminWales
      @AdaminWales  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tim Plusminus I would go for Claim 1 to begin with. I think the powers are a little more intuitive. But either would be fine, and you’ll need both to play with more than 2 players!
