To be honest. That blade shape and the marine raider shape are my favorite. I also like the 1917 Frontier Bowie shape.
The Frontier is really impressive for the price. The Marauder also surprised me. This one just needed some work.
@@michaelrizzo5523 I have two of every Bowie I like from cold steel. I really want some Bark River bowies and some from a blacksmith in Vermont. The convex grind and hybrid-convex grind for those blade shapes seem to work best for all around applications.

I'm guessing your blade wasn't grinder ragged and the bolster wasn't sharp enough to peel off skin. I really think mine just slipped through QC unfinished.
San Mai or CPM 3V version is great. Beyond that, quit trying to make it a bushcraft knife. It’s a fighting knife. I would add, opinions are like……., everyone has one.
No use for a bushcraft knife, but, damn, such a badly finished blade and grip for the price.
Still, for what you pay for it, it should be a full tang knife.

In the past, John Ek included a piece of sandpaper with each of his knives so that soldiers could customize the grip to fit the contour of their hand. Maybe Cold Steel should start practicing something like this.)

Most reveiwers do not consider all the aspects you consider. And to your credit, you explain why you do this tests you do, and what you are trying to access with each test.
Won't any 8mm blade be a good chopper?
In addtion often times reviewers shy away from any kind of constructive critisism.
I am a Cold Steel Fan and I want to know which aspects are not perfect or fall short. Nothing wrong with pointing out short comings on any knife. They all are compromises in some way.
Additionally, in regard to the cable tang, considering it as mearly a Marshall knife or display knife.
If I am spending 150 to 400 I expect form and function. I do not spend what I spend, for what I would call a replica. Something that looks great, is historically correct, and makes a great wall hanger.
But is not something you would actually use.
Nothing wrong with a "decorative" blade.
I am not saying the laredo is merely a wall hanger.
I just expect more from Cold Steel. I expect Trailmaster quality. Form, function, great steel and a fair price.
I have more Cold Steel Blades than I can count.
I think this and the Natchez fall short, especially at the high end price point.
Many of the Spanish blades you have reviewed, and I have purchased, seem to give better quality builds and designs, albiet with less expensive steel. However, I enjoy when a blade out preforms expectations. I don't enjoy, spending top dollar and being disappionted.

Thanks! This one is performing up there with my best choppers, and some of my bigger knives are actually worse choppers, so edge geometry is one of those things to get right for the task. (Back edge on this one chops great as well.) I'll definitely give this one an update.
I did a rebuild of one of my Natchez Bowie 4 years ago. I welded a heavy bolt tang on it with inner tube wrap handle. I wish I had not sold it. I sold all the rest of my cable tang Natchez Bowie knives, and do not miss them, I own blades that large to actually use. Keep up the great work, thanks for your insight and instruction. ( I tested my Natchez by baton splitting firewood until the handle loosened, and then did the rebuild with it. I show the disassembled cable tang it's about half thick good tang up to the cable. I could not feel any difference in the handling after I built it heavy) keep up the great work 🤠🗡💯👍
cable tang is fine for killing anything which threatens your life. bowie isn’t for chopping etcc
@@rushgush It depends on the design of the particular Bowie, lots of heavy full tang Bowie knives out there that are intended for handling wood processing/ chopping work.
I had one of these years ago and used it quite a bit for processing firewood & it worked well. I doubted the strength of the tip for use as a dedicated camp knife . . . and I had no idea about the cable tang. I understand that engineering behind it . . . . but have difficulty trusting it.
I began making knives at 13 years old = 55 years ago . After being a machinist and eventually a mechanical engineer, The key term is "ductility". The ability for blade steel to flex under stress without breaking and return to it's original geometry. A friend of mine purchased the 4034 CS Laredo and had questions about the lack of edge retention and overall performance capabilities of his knife.
Rockwell hardness test - Shows a fairly consistent 55-56 hardness along the spine of the blade , which proceeds to the cutting edge . The blade was not differentially hardened and tempered.
Liquid gun bluing - Even low carbon blade steel will chemically react with Birchwood Casey gun blue. The 4034 had interrupted and uneven tempering lines . The blade was buffed and the owner did not want the edges on the handle reduced or removed . Rolling in the hand being the reason. An actual choil was made with a CNC milling machine and he had a Kydex sheath made. There are Xray pictures out there which show why the partial cable tang is simply a bad idea. The steel and the tang are not my idea of a strong functional combat blade .

I carried a gerber mk II old school L6 at 62 rc for many many miles of backpacking. Upside down on my back pack strap. Never let me down. Still one of my favorite knives. The steel , the recurve, the serrations and outstanding edge holding. Fantastic! Maybe m
heard Jim Bowies preference was forward grip blade upside down for easier gut disembowlment pulling opponents weight into the blade then sawing upward, whilst using the karambit edge for hacking. Mines the San Mai III Laredo Bowie. Leather sheath threw away replaced w panther concealment commodor and that one works great, thin, sleek. I took off the top part replaced it w a button retention strap so the blade doesnt come out and chop my leg off. Sometimes I trip or roll around. Also added a dangler which makes walking 25X more comfortable. Mirror polished the blade it will blind someone in the sun including myself who cares it looks so sexy. HOLY GRAIL of all knives. Just weighs too much
I have both entry level CS Laredo and Natchez Bowie knives. The Laredo is just like yours, the Natchez has a more comfortable grip. Personally I would use gloves with any knife for prolonged use as I'm prone to getting blisters real quick otherwise, no matter how comfortable the grip. 😅

Beyond the grip , which hey, the above observation is spot on logically. Use a tool to protect your hand, gloves, I have the very old Carbon V version. Chopping and batoning wood up to 2 inches is a breeze. CPM 3V with proper heat treat is FAR stronger. The space below the ricasso is NOT a choil. This is not a cooking knife. A full or heavy stick encapsulate tang with no stress risers and a proper heat treat and temper is just better. The sheathes on these knives suck. Just make one out of real KYDEX or saddle grade vegetable tanned leather
Thanks for bringing this cable tang issue to light. I have a very early Carbon V and have trained with it for years. I carried it and a Trail Master in Iraq (not both at once). It functions much better than my Randall 14 in the Keating style of Bowie Knife Fighting. Does the Trail Master have similar issues? I have carried this in its original leather sheath with stud and more in the Summer Special Kydex from River City Sheaths, the gent that made that is now retired.
I've been umming and ahhing over the Laredo for a little while now, specifically 3v version, so this video was very well timed. Looking forward to the TBC
It cleaned up okay, I just shouldn't have had to given the MSRP. I can't speak to the 3V version. But this one just feels too light for its size, if that makes sense.

This reminds me of when i bought a new chef knife. It was a Mac Professional 8.5 inch chef knife. I had several other knives from them and they were very comfortable. When i got the new chef knife the handles were super blocky and i think somebody in the factory accidently skipped a process in finishing

@@michaelrizzo5523 Yep, you kinda did... "Wouldn't use it for a wall-hanger"... oy... Frankly IF it isn't a too ridiculous amount, I don't mind a bit of "customising" the grip. Others may feel differently. Shaping the grip to my hands makes sense to me, always has. I worked on my Laredo grip and greatly improved it, eventually I'll get after the choils on my L and Nat both.. Also have to do something about the plastic sheath on my Nat but havent worked the design yet- other than I want leather, not plastic...

Well sir I have the Larado and I like the grip!! The rectangle is better than a round to me. To each their own.
Im curious, were cable tangs a thing back in the frontier era or is it the product of a Lynn Thompson fever dream. If anyone knows I'd appreciate an answer.
I can't find anything about them except for these two CS models. No idea when, how or why these started.
The design is to reduce weight in the handle, to have the blade forward heavy, for flicking quicker for example.

I have the Natchez in 3V and I love it! I plan on getting the Laredo in 3V as well.
You would be in a distinct minority in not liking the blade. The consensus of most people who have a Laredo is thumbs up. And many who have both the Natchez and Laredo prefer the Laredo due to its lighter weight and greater agility in the hand.
I just can't believe what I got was properly finished. It looks like someone took a piece of stock freehand to an 80 grit slack belt for ten minutes and called it good. Those grind lines are deep, the planes are rippled, the spine is ragged, and the secondary edge bevel was a rough afterthought. I'm assuming the 3V version has to be MUCH better.

The grind lines on my 3V Laredo was AWESOME it's a 10 out if 10. The fit and finish 10 out of 10. No disappointments at all.
I think if you get the more expensive products you get what you pay for. There are always lemons here and there. Just send it back or send it to Cold Steel if you have a bad one.
They will correct or replace defects!

Didn't buy the Natchez for the cable tang. Seems like the answer for the question that was never was asked. Glad I bought a Windless Musso-- less bad and cheaper and I could put a vinegar finish on it.

Excellent handle & chole modification and polishing work on that blade ,most fans of the Cold Steel brand can't admit that a knife made by them can be improved on unless it one of the extremely low budget knives fixed or folder.
And that not a low budget although it's theore affordable version.
I like that way you gave that handle some hand contour for a more natural grip and without compromising the tang configuration and structure. 🎯

For anyones information. This is flat out made and designed to be a fighting knife, it is explicitly a fighting only knife.
Which is specificly designed to be able to carve up another person, that is willing and is trying to take your life.
I've been a "knife-guy" since age seven. At 73 I'm a collector and user of big blades... soooo... here goes. -No problem with construction/finishing issues. It's a wee bit clunky in my hands, unlike the Laredo which with a little handle-shaping is about perfect for a mid-size bowie. IMO. This thing is a g*dd*mn CHOPPER and as such is out-performed by a decent khukuri of similar size & weight. Again, IMO. I've never cottoned much to edge-side up use, but I know it is taught both in American bowie fighting and Russian Systema Spetsnaz fighting.

Now that I have a yard with a small forest of neglected trees, this one's been in my chopping rotation, and is keeping up with my best choppers without taking any damage. Back edge is pretty good at chopping too. (That buzz in the grip under hard impact is still a little weird.) I think I owe this one an update video.

This is a major design flaw, and whomever decided to use it in this knife should be fired.
The cold steel rhetoic about taking up handle shock is rubbish, and obviously a sour grapes after thought advertising gimmick to cover the fact it is just a crappy design and cheaply made handle. It is the reason i never bought the knife, nor will i until they fix that design problem.

Both my san mai trailmaster and 3v trailmaster had the same sharp edges issue around the hilt and as you, i sanded them smooth.
I have both the 4034 and 3V versions and the 3V comes with a much better edge the same with the Natchez Bowie the 3V version comes with a better edge it seems as though Cold Steel puts more effort into the sharpness of the higher end version of this knife.

Not buying the "not designed for field use" rhetoric.
The bowie traditionally was most definitely used as a multi-use field tool, and if i carry (which i often do) a large blade i will definitely use it for every use a big blade can be used for including trimming my hedges which works excellently only you have to clean off the sap immediately or it will corrode the blade.
If it can't be used at least occasionally as a field tool, it is poorly made.
This knife is poorly made.
That said, i really love the blade shape, grind, and thickness. It is reminiscent of Bill Bagwell fighting bowies which are my favorite design.
I only wish it had a full tang. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
I'm looking at the Trailmaster. The shorter Recon Scout is pretty solid.
A few observations. I have both the natchez and Laredo bowies, but neither are made of the newer stainless steel. When he mentioned the sheath Linn Thompson uses, I assume he's referring to the older knives cold steel made, as one of mine has style of sheath, while the other has the kydex. Neither of my knives are uncomfortable at all. Are these knives show quality? Nope, they are fighting knives, so many of us are not looking for that.
Any plans on reviewing the CS Natchez Bowie?

Find a bud k copy for low dollars and be happy. Love the square handed comment. As a former custom knife maker those easy to finish and pretty but super uncomfortable flat square handles are super uncomfortable and hard to use.

Mike this is definitely one of your funniest reviews, thank you for making me laugh!! Now to the point. The largest blade I've ever carried consistently was Ka-Bar 1266 Modified Tanto (which is in fact my favorite carry knife, period). Its original sheath was very disappointing, and in my opinion, not very usable, so I picked up an aftermarket kydex one (very similar to CS's Secure-Ex). I was using a shoelace (or some paracord) to tie it to the belt on my front horizontally, pointed to the left (I'm right-handed), with most of its length on my front left side. The handle therefore was in front of me and slightly to the right, covering the belt buckle. I hope that makes sense? Anyway, it was allowing a super easy and convenient draw.
Another way I would carry a large blade like the Laredo, utilizing the Secure-Ex, would be hanging it low on the belt on my right side, with a shoe lace (or some paracord) tying the sheath's tip to my leg.
P. S. Take a look at Boker Arbolito El Gigante. It seems to me, it addresses ALL the negative points you made about the Laredo. Mine has Guayacan ebony handle (and I love it), but I'm fairly certain you would prefer the one with stag handle.

@@michaelrizzo5523 Forgot to mention a major benefit of that horizontal carry I described: the sheath doesn't touch the car seat when driving, so I don't have to worry about it rubbing a hole in the leather. Plus, it's just as easy to draw the knife while sitting.
And about ChicagoKnifeworks. Their prices are very very nice, but you gotta be careful if you plan ordering a bunch of stuff at once. That's exactly what I did, ordered a couple knives, several tin signs, some ropes, *a hatchet*, and God knows what else. And you know what they did? They dumped everything in one box without any packing material, and mailed it. So I'll probably never shop there again, unless it's just one item, so there would be no room for them to mess it up.
Yeeeaaah. I recently decided to replace an O-1 trail master that was stolen by a spec-4 over a decade ago. I'm glad I scoured ebay and paid over twice what I originally paid for a NIB one. Who knows if they're using that cable tang in the TM as well. I know they overgrind the primary bevels on current production models, and they 86'd the brass guard. Not cool man. Not cool.
Trailmaster and Recon Scout should be full tang. TM is on my wish list. Miss the old versions though, much nicer.
The fixed knives from Bark River Knives and Fällkniven(laminated steel) are enhanced with a convex grind.

I have the 3V. It’s the one knife that I own that scares me. The sheath is a let down aesthetically, I’ll probably have a custom leather or kydex one made. The handle is nice, but it could use a raised portion mid handle to really lock it in. The guard could be marginally wider.
That’s a real shame, because I had one about 8 years ago and it was phenomenal, but this doesn’t even look like the same knife. I think cold steel’s quality has been severely compromised by new ownership. Listen to your customers @coldsteel
Have the CPM3V Laredo and the 4034 Natchez. Always for years had misgivings about the cable tangs but recently i caught both on sale at separate times and succumbed to temptation. Natchez first cause i love the design, Laredo after because i was talked into it by forumites. Well to be honest i still like the Natchez better, better handle shape for comfort and retention, also weightier feels more substantial. still find the micarta a little slick so for now both are wrapped in racket tape. Does wonders for a secure feel.
It's a display knife, not a user. Steel, construction...all that doesn't matter. Of course, they should market it as such (and slash a few hundred off the price).
Not sure how much you're paying is the unnecessary over-engineering of the cable tang and how much is the hype of their big Bowie line.
Take off the belt loop. Attach an IWB loop which allows you to secure the sheath to the belt. It also works for Facon carry.
Basically what I do, or mount a stud on it.
The old SK-5 steel version is great but difficult to obtain. Carried one almost every day for years. Not really sure about the square handle reasons because some versions are rounder like the old Carbon V versions but just sand the square edges down with some sandpaper, problem solved. That darn cable tang is annoying though.
I have the 4034 Laredo and the Ontario Bagwell Hell's Belle. A radius on the corners of the slabby handles would be nice, making it very similar to the coffin style on the OHB. For a "fighter" I think the cable tang is ok, and even the OHB is a partial tang epoxied into the laminated wood handles. I wouldn't use the Laredo for heavy chopping... that's what the Trail Master is better for.

Depends on application. WW is a big heavy overbuilt chopper that isn't as good a chopper as other big knives--I'd suggest checking out the large Bear & Son Gold Rush for that classic look. This Laredo has held up to a lot of abuse since the video and, except for the odd "buzz" inside the grip, stayed solid so far.

Interesting you made comparisons with a dagger style knife...
Not a surprise as many carried the "Arkansas toothpick " bowie which is precisely that (dagger style) a natural permutation of the original bowie.
And yes, historically the inverted bowie fighting style was often used to great effect utilizing the efficiency and effectiveness of the (sharpened) clip point.
The 3V version is RAZOR SHARP.

I feel as if good sense would indicate that batoning with the technique you used will destroy the handle fairly quickly because its design. I feel as if people who have damaged the knife by batoning like that or by batoning the handle, rather than uncovering a problem with the knife, are at fault for said dammage. I feel that when you consider the cable tang construction and how the impact to the blade transmits into the handle it should be evident that technique will dammage the handle.
I probably wouldn't baton anymore with it because of the long sharp back swedge. I have put this one to rough use chopping wet and dry branches in my new backyard (along with my other big knives for comparison) and it's still holding together just fine under impact. I just feel that odd "buzzing" in the grip.

I have this knife in 3V steel. I love it. Having looked at many authentic “Bowie” knives most that I have seen with wood handles had handles shaped quite similarly. You certainly are entitled to your opinion but to me you come across “whinnie”. Example. Anyone who knows anything about knives would immediately recognize that there is not a Chole on this knife and the fact that you cut your finger makes me nervous. Thank you for your efforts though.
I bought the Cold Steel Laredo that was made in the USA. Unfortunately, the wood came with a crack, so I send it back and that was the end for that model. I like the blade geometry, and as you say, the choil is like a trap. I'm not a fan of that tang system. I think that the worst thing the Laredo has is the guard. For me it is too small. I ended up carrying and using a Randall Model 12-9 Brassback Sportsman Bowie in one of my leather sheaths (PERSEV Leather)
... oh, Mike! Thank-you for this video! The bigger-picture on the form-and-function of the classic bowie is starting to come together through your reviews. Believe-it-or-not... this is a rather-difficult topic to study; it seems that this relatively-recent, at-least by classical historical-measure, fighting-style has been nearly lost through false-speculation or by intentional mis-representation. Your "backwards" or "reverse-grip" (Can you tell me the appropriate way to reference holding the knife with spine-out?) demonstration is answering a lot of questions... and confirming that Lynn Thompson is a man-of-his-word and true-student of the original and fundamental function of the bowie.
Watching you "dance" with those "snap-cuts" in reverse-grip was a thing-of-beauty. There are several other classic-form "out-of-field-of-vision" snap and back-cuts where "steel leads flesh" in an even more pronounced and fencing-like manner than you were demonstrating... that I would love to see you incorporate. This might offer one of the most accurate recreations of the style I have yet-to-see.
Please bring this knife back with the 1917-Bowie for a side-by-side depiction of these blades performing in classic historical-form. I, honestly, believe there are only a few-hundred people remaining in the United States who understand how to properly "fight" with these weapons. And even fewer have seen it flow in the hands of a skilled practitioner, such-as yourself. These aren't really "knives"... they behave more like a combination of short-sword and rapier... if that even makes any sense.
Anyway... thank-you for this review. It turned-out so much-better than you lead me to believe at the beginning. With the modifications you were able to perform... I have to say I'm very interested in this blade. It looks great... and seems to perform just as I would have hoped.
I plan on doing more functional content, including side-by-side comparisons. Western Bowie, like Esgrima Criolla, was apparently originally derived from European sword and saber, hence the early decision to add a partial rear edge to what was otherwise a big field knife to do back-cuts and slashes. I'm finding a whole lot in common with other bladed weapons I've studied in terms of techniques and tactics, with unique twists of course. That spine-forward grip seems to be a later American thing, but has a lot in common with other forward-curving blades like the Ginunting and Argentine Alfajor (supposedly descended from Moorish weapons), and does have some interesting pragmatic applications. The Bowie's history is unfortunately very muddled by nearly two hundred years of popular legends and knife seller's hype, but it seems to come down to a desire to have the force-multiplier of a sword in a more convenient carry package.

This is an unfaur question... but in your opinion... what is the perfect "big-knife" design; and how would you choose to wield it? Is a more European sword-and-saber or fencing-style an equal or possibly superior approach to many of the Asian martial-philosophies on blade-handling that you've trained in? Can a big-blade really be wielded elusively in anything but a "quick" and "snappy" style?

@@trikk9964 The big knife, like the wakizashi, compensates for reach with speed. It also has to stay evasive as the hand itself is a target. Unfortunate experience has told us that stabbing is the most effective and hardest to defeat use, but snap and hewing cuts with a big blade can be very effective, and if it's capable of some parrying it can make up the length deficit. Most effective when paired with other empty hand skills or ideally something else in the other hand (shield, parrying tool, other blade) which I intend to explore. I've enjoyed training with Chinese Butterfly Swords for a long time, which are basically big D-Guard Bowies, and prefer designs that have stabbing tips and even false edges, despite some systems insisting on pretty wide blunt tips. Those do use both hewing saber cuts and parries along with the faster snapping and spinning cuts from the wrist (like a moulinet in saber) for speed. I'm enjoying the cross-cultural exploration a lot!
To all the full tang studs. The cabletang is actually more expensive to manufacture. It's a quite more complex assembly. So there are evidently serious thoughts behind a cable tang. Or why would they build it, if they could get away cheaper with a full tang? Right? Think!!

I figured there should be some amusement for my misery.
I was afraid that you were going to put me off my long held dream of getting the Laredo, but your Mods solved your problems with the knife.
In the future you might like to review the Svord Von Tempski Bowie knife. It's a chopping monster, and I suspect you might need to mod the grip on that one, too. It makes it easy for you, though, with slabs screwed on.
My qualms with it are mainly the weight. It is thick and heavy. I'd need to weight train for a while to get any speed in a fight.
The Laredo does have potential, and the more expensive blades are probably better quality.

Since I know it's a rat tail tang I think I'm going to go with a 1917 frontier bowie from coldsteel I'm looking for a truly good field knife for my safari hiking by foot in Rwanda and a cable tang is simply not going to hold on striking and chopping on old and dried up acacia savanna wood for the fire so I thank you for this informations sir ... I'd also recommend the Cold Steel Wild West Bowie as a heavy chopper. On the higher end, the Trail Master is on my wish list as it gets high praise as the ultimate field Bowie.
@michaelrizzo5523 I'm simply in the philosophy that if it's a rat tail tang it's no buueno I'm looking for an overall knife for defense and field working purposes if it's for only defense purposes it's just not suitable for me only one purpose is no buueno that's a shame because the Loredo and the Natchez are so gorgeous. The only knife with a rat tail tang I might take it's the Facon because I'm a chef cook 👨🍳 and this knife is a hell of a good chef's knife

I was so nervous anticipating your seaming dislike for the Laredo. Mainly because I’m about to drop 500.00 on a San Mai version. Lynn has carried his daily for many years now and his endorsement means a lot to me. So after completing your analysis I’m very happy that you’re more than fair and very diplomatic in your opinion thus far of the Laredo.

Before I drop that 500.00 on the San Mai Laredo may I ask you for an alternative to research? I love the Laredo because it is very wieldy with wrist movements as you pointed out. Also it can be worn with a sheath inside the waistband concealing the sheath. The way Lynn Carrie’s his is what I’m looking for.
I admit I’m just now beginning to carry the Bowie and I’m obsessed with learning to use one martially. So any thoughts or suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated.

Take into account I may have gotten a blade that slipped through QC and I was able to fix my personal dislikes fairly easily. It is a quick and nimble knife, so I can see why Lynn carries one, being a serious student of North American Bowie. I've heard the 3V version might actually be more durable than the Sanmai, but the Sanmai also has its aesthetic appeal. (If you're in the US, Chicago Knife Works consistently has the best prices.) I've also heard the Natchez is somewhat better fit-and-finish-wise, with a more ergonomic grip, but it is significantly bigger. I'll be reviewing some Condors and Bear & Sons soon, and have a 3V Trailmaster on my wish list. Thanks!

That sucks brother. I saw that honshu has a version of the old west bowie out now. I think it might be 1060 high carbon & it looks almost identical.

From the stats, appearance and what other people have said about it, I thought I would love it, hence my disappointment. It's always the risk of buying something you haven't handled first, since knife shops are a thing of the past. Makes unboxing a gamble.

I picked up one of these and was impressed at first, but quickly became disappointed as you did. The grip is slippery and the cable tang is… unsettling even if Cold Steel re-assures everyone of its durability.
I return it to Amazon. The Natchez Bowie suffers from the same issue. I decided to buy/keep the Recon Scout.
Recon Scout is a great, solid knife.
I would also like to add that the cable tang idea of it absorbing impact might actually have worked had they not glued it solid into the micarta! 😂 it would need to be a cable able to move and vibrate to absorb any kind of impact stresses...
Yeah, doesn't make a lot of sense, and I'm not feeling that "tuning fork" vibration I'm supposed to, more like a dull rattle.
@@michaelrizzo5523 exactly why I went with the Gurkha kukri and the trailmaster for my larger CS knives well actually I do also have the western junk bowie make in Pakistan I believe out of 1055 thankfully Amazon gave me a full refund on that one n told me to keep it when I called them and the Maurader and the 52100 bowies and small hunter and the O1 recon scout- well shit I guess I have quite a few but the main choppers/bigger ones are the Kuk and the trailmaster lol-ol-ol the kuk having the rubber handle as does the trailmaster now I would personally recommend going with the Vg1 San mai trailmaster made in Japan vs the 3V or CarbonV because it has a fully convexed edge making the knife identical to the much more expensive Fallkniven modern bowie as they're made in the same factory and I firmly believe that a convexed VG10 will outperform a thick sabre ground V-edge 3V blade of the same design.... Just my educated opinion 🤷 take it for what it is worth I guess

The bud k sheath sucks and I recontoured the grip but it is a bad butt blade and no cable tang.

I do have the sub-hilt Black Bear Classic, which I'll add to the comparison videos. I don't have the Black Bear machete.

Buys budget version instead of 3v version, is shocked and appalled that it is, in fact, budget.
As stated, I know I can get a better CS knife for a lot less ($200 retail, $379 MSRP). So why should I have to pay nearly twice again as much ($300 retail, $579 MSRP)? If I'm spending the money, it's going to be a 3V Trailmaster.

I've bought cold steel knives since the 1980s.I currently have a Laredo.I agree it has a couple faults, it should be full tang and the handle should be kraton but the rest of you complaints are bullshit.Your "testing" was a joke.The knife is a fighter test it that way.Get a side of beef and see how it does against meat and bone anything else is not appropriate.In the meantime to improve the grip do what I did and put skateboard tape on the handle.The knife is decent not great but not crap.
I get a lot of these "side of beef" and "pig carcass" comments. If anyone would like to donate about $1700 for a side of beef or $700 for a pig carcass, I still wouldn't waste the meat.

I feel like if cable tangs are really so awesome then a lot more knife makers would use them, and we'd all recognize by now how awesome they are. But pretty much nobody uses these and we don't. Instead, let me think... What's that kind of tang most of us look for if we want a tough knife? And there's reasons for that.

I've got the Recon Scout on the way, Trail Master likely to follow. Supposedly far superior builds, but pricey.
You have training why aren't you cutting out of any thrust? Where did your teachers go wrong? Any thrusting should be CUT out.
First I'm not demonstrating combos. Second, I've found that "always" statements are a bad idea in an unpredictable dynamic situation. That said, in drilling and sparring I habitually try to crunch 2-4 actions into the tempo of any engagement while I have opportunity and range. So if my blade is buried in a target and I want a bigger channel, or I have a target of opportunity upon withdrawal, or I've used the thrust to set up a countercut, then it's automatic, yes, definitely. But I've found in sparring with anyone with reasonable skills, speed and reflexes that I often may have to void my arm to avoid a counter or an obstruction (disengage/re-engage). And, practically, up here in the cold dark there's likely a lot of layers of thick clothing making cutting with the knife I'm probably carrying ineffective (or even entangling) unless I hit an exposed hand, which is a small, fast target.
if you want to have something special for you, make your own knife...like Mark Young, always complaining about his xl hands and none of the knives fit them...kinda narcisistic that a knife maker have to modify a knife for just one person...come on...
