- Courtesy of the Clark Santee archives, the wonderful Melanie Safka in an early TV appearance singing her song Beautiful People, a hit for her in Europe. Schooled in performing solo in the coffee houses of Greenwich Village, Melanie was a talent to be reckoned with and her non-conformist songs found favour with groups like the New Seekers in the early 1970's topping charts worldwide. Melanie's magnificent Candles In The Rain single in 1970 kickstarted her own career and huge hits followed with Brand New Key and her cover of Ruby Tuesday.

Put Melanie in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame posthumously. It's an unbelievable shame that she wasn't inducted in her lifetime. Such a generational icon and talent! RIP beautiful soul. Cheers\=/\=/

Was just watching her sing with Miley Cyrus...she always makes me feel good when I hear her sing...glad I got to see her in her hometown stomping grounds when she visited, saying it was good to be back home when she played at Monmouth University a few years back. She may have been born in Queens but graduated High School in Red Bank NJ. Rest easy beautiful person.
I was devastated, her voice has been with me for most of my life.

I was 17 when this song came out. I truly did and still like it. But the reality of the dreamers of that era is today a sad reality. All of this "beautiful" world picture that was painted meanwhile people were doing drugs everywhere and free "love" etc. It was a detachment from reality in the end. "Beautiful dreamers" out of touch with the reality that we face today.
You have missed the point. Melanie is singing about creating your own reality. By reaching out to other people who share your dreams/aspirations. It wasn't out of touch 50 years ago and it isn't now.

Ja. 1978 (etwa) hatte meine neun Jahre ältere Schwester in ihrem Zimmer solche Platten, und ich wollte "Garden in the city" hören, das tolle Cover sprach mich wohl an. Die Stimme blieb in mir hängen, und ich wollte es immer wieder hören.
