Back in the late 1960's the axle spline drive shaft on my Fiat 850 stripped out while I was traveling in Quintana Roo. To get back home to Chicago I had a local machine shop install a couple of wodruff keys in place of the splines and reassembled the axle. This worked fine and I drove the Fiat for several years after with that fix. The best thing about those days was that gas cost around 20 cents a gallon and I could fill the tank for $2.00 from empty.
Same as we used to have here in Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦... everything's now become a nightmare to fixing..the price going crazy up most of the grocery shop price going double some triple ....the gas went 400% just in the last 6 Year's..... Greetings 💐

A temporary repair at best. Machining with Tungsten Carbide Tools and no Coolant just makes them blunt. The half Shaft induction hardening process would need to be redone after the repair otherwise it won't last.
Agreed. He heated the parts to soften them for machining but didn't do heat treatment after that to get them hard again. The repaired part will wear out real quick! Didn't see him check alignment with dial gauge to make sure splines are parallel with the shaft.

@jankowalski9817 , it's worth a try. All they have to do is super heat the final product to harden it. I'm no engineer but in these countries where money is at a premium, they have found out how to repair a lot of what breaks. I am a witness to this.
Excelent job, it is gone hold a long way. Maybe not as a new one, as many sinical has comented, but that dosen’t take away the satisfaction of the this repair job.
A simple chop saw would have saved a lot of machining time. Chop it off oversize then machine to length. Probably scammed the owner and said it was "new"😅 Unless it is a rare or outdated piece it's better to get an original replacement part.
OMG he left out about 3 inches of spline that goes into what turns the ring gear and pinion about 3/4 of the strength of that axel is lost now! Common sense would tell anyone to just find another axel.
No me convence mucho el trabajo. Ele eje trabajará por algún tiempo y se romperá, por donde le aplicaron la soldadura. Lo mejor es comprar el eje de segunda o nuevo.
This skill and talent is very much alive here in the U.S.A. The problem is that some companies don’t want to pay for that type of skill. Trying to get away with paying the minimum. Companies need to stop the crying and just pay what it cost. They need to step it up.
Да, его одежда не подходящая, а зная с какой легкостью этот станок разбрасывает человека по всему цеху очень больно смотреть как он не соблюдает хоть какие-то правила безопасности

That is the cleanest shop I’ve seen in one of those areas. Amazing talent too.
I’m 74 and still doing these types of things on a smaller scale. Born and raised in the USA. No college; just a high school diploma.

This what is happening in the USA, the workers that could preform this kind of work have aged out and there isn't anyone to replace them...
Nope - these are Pakistani workers - and their day jobs - skilled savers and recyclers
Trump wants to deport them if he gets into power, unfortunately...
It's not even the wanting to replace them It's the ability to wanting to work in the area of this.
Este video no es de EEUU. Se me hace que es en la India.
En argentina todavía hay estás técnicas por suerte
A repair that looks good but will not withstand the original load on the axle
They do this repair daily
It will survive
Its not a chevy !
Lol
You will believe it will last for decades if you use it
It's this kind of negativity that leads to out sourcing and big corporations pushing replacement. Craftsmanship came first!!!
maybe if Chinese did it then it would not work

The reason they do this is because the new replacement parts are not available and a functional truck is better than a yard statue

Salute to this man's dedication and craftmanship.
This is a skillful fix, but honestly, in the long run, best to recycle that metal and get a new part.

Looks good but won’t actually hold up to axle loads.
Cierto ,lo más probable es que en una carga súbita o un arrancon fuerte, no aguante el esfuerzo de torsión ,realmente queda trabajando el anillo de la soldadura
What makes everyone think a welded on piece is strong enough when the original forging wasn't?
The weld was just to prevent the threaded portion unscrewing itself. The splined part is effectively like a big nut with the shaft as the bolt.
@@Deadbmw I get it, but the original piece was one solid forging.
Remember that welding through a bearing will cause damage to your lay
Otherwise it looks good
That was my concern. Also, weld splatter sticking to the surface.
Just be sure and ground thru the part and not the lathe.
And cover bed\ ways with something to prevent anything from sticking……
Great repair , me and you think alike, that’s something I would do, keep up the great work
In Brazil we still do this type of work, it doesn't look like new, but the truck owner saves money for some time....

From where dude
Its third world out there
Just having a wellding torch and a lathe is a big step.
What is the heating about? Doesn't that remove the temper?
To remove the temper, you need a lot more heat to go deep in..His just heating the outside to make it easier to work with the metal.
Yep that repair will last as long as it doesn't have a load on the truck then they will be back !
He had to soften the steel so it would cut
I think the singly mist impressive thing here is that's he isnt using a dial indicator and still getting a true cut
Absolutely brilliant guy he makes it look easy.that took a long time to finish.safety glasses are a must protect those good eyes.
