First car I drove was my Dad's '71 Javelin SST. 360 engine. Similar exterior to the car seen here but Cherry red with the white side stripes. Beautiful thick corduroy seats. Lot's a great memories!

Bought my first car, 1972 javelin sst, when I was 15. Bought it for 150.00 with a bad engine.
My dad bought me a junkyard engine for 250.00.
Awesome car, I beat on it for a couple years then sold it to a body shop guy for 450.00 and redoing my quarters on my cuda.
It was canary yellow but he put a custom green mural paint job.

Yeah, I am a Chevy guy....but I thought long and hard, debating between a 396 Camaro, and an AMX.
Actually decided on an AMX....but the dealer couldn't get one with a 401, with the colors I wanted, without waiting for it.
    So...being young and impatient,
I bought the 396 Camaro, how I wanted it...the next day.
It was in stock, at a nearby dealer.
Great car, and drove it for years.
But......I have often thought that my AMX, was out there, somewhere, with someone who was more patient.
    No regrets.....but...kinda, shoulda, waited.
Now, Camaros are everywhere...but an AMX is one of "those cars" that got away.

Had one of these years ago when I lived in Vancouver, it had a sickly 304 in it . One day seen a ad in the news paper for a wrecked 71 javelin, been rear ended for 350 bucks . Went to buy it and to my joy it was an amx with a 401 4 speed needless to say my ol 73 javelin got an immense power improvement!!! A year later I was moving to Alberta so I decided to sell it , a young woman bought it and two days later she called me and said she wrapped it around a power pole on a wet road !!! 😢

As the owner of a 1973 Javelin, I am 2nd owner, I think these cars are overlooked. Just now starting to get some attention. A few notes.
I have been asked why my Javelin has Vette front fenders. But the story is they are like that because Penske/Donohue wanted to be able to run bigger tires. SCCA Trans Am rules did not allow fender flares.....so Penske had AMC build them into the car.....front and rear. To bad the dash controls are missing the 'knobs' and inserts. Once gone they are very hard to find replacements. Thanks for showing how cool Javelins are!

I have a 1970 Mark Donahue which is really just an option on the SST. My spoiler was the usually cracked in 9 places. I found, oddly enough, a spoiler from a 1973 was the same thing and I used that one. The instrument clusters in these were particularly crappy, but repop boards are available. Avoid the 304. It is not worth wasting your time on.

Just as point of order with regards to the genesis of the birth of the pony car, I was in attendance at the 1964 World's Fair in New York City, and witnessed the premier of Iaccoca's greatest brainstorming product. And because, for the many reasons cited, in marketing courses in business schools in universities worldwide, it caught on like nothing else ever had!!
Thus, Mustang car = Pony car = All cars in this class.
The vehicles displayed at the Ford Pavillion were P-Zero running prototypes, and running show car variants from the styling studios, and pre-production testing departments to amaze the American public.
Here's the thing though, the nomenclature of "Pony Car", is incorrect, believe it or not it should have been "Fast Fish", or something more aquatic, because there were not any production Mustangs at that time, coming down the line, produced or sold by Ford, and there wouldn't be for nearly a month after the premier of the Mustang at the World's Fair.
BELIEVE IT, OR NOT THE PLYMOUTH BARRACUDAS WERE THE FIRST CARS OF THIS NEW CLASS OF AUTOMOBILE THAT WERE ALREADY IN PRODUCTION, AND AT DEALERSHIPS, ALREADY SOLD & PURCHASED, AND ON AMERICA'S HIGHWAYS 🛣!!!!! THEY BEAT THE MUSTANG TO BEING ON THE ROAD BY THREE, AND A HALF WEEKS, ALMOST A MONTH AHEAD OF THE FIRST MUSTANG TO COME DOWN THE PRODUCTION LINE, AND OUT THE FACTORY 🏭 DOORS. AND EVEN LONGER UNTIL THE FIRST MUSTANG ARRIVED AT A FORD DEALERSHIP. HOW ABOUT THAT THE PLYMOUTH BARRACUDAS WERE FIRST, THEN THE MUSTANGS.
WELL, AS THE LATE PAUL HARVEY USED TO SAY "AND NOW YOU KNOW THE REST OF THE STORY".😊❤

I hated these when I was young, we loved Cudas and Chargers, but now I really like them, my buddys mom had one she worked at GM Tech Center for 30yrs, first she had a plumb crazy 70 Challenger S/E 383 car, her 16 year old son wrapped it around a tree and killed himself, so no more fast cars for her, she had a 72 Javelin 305, silver blue. I live in Michigan, I am 60 now, we raced on Gratiot every weekend, we lived too far from Woodward, we trashed and banged up a lot of rare cars today, that`s exactly why originals are so hard to find, my buddy got sideways and destroyed the quarter and trunk of his AAR Cuda, it went right to a junkyard.

With the VIN (from the HOC website), you'll win: A for American Motors, 1 for 1971 model year, A for three speed column shifted automatic transmission, 7 for Javelin, 9 for two door hardtop, 7 for Javelin SST, H for 304 V8 with two barrel, and the rest is the production sequence, which in this case begins with a "1" so that denotes Kenosha, WI assembly. The Kenosha, WI plant operated until December 23, 1988 assembling vehicles, but continued to assemble engines until around 2010.

Having owned javelins, barracudas, mustangs, Camaros and firebirds I have to say the javelins handled the best of all of them, unfortunately it got the least respect from my friends 😂

I like almost all American performance cars from this era, but this "Generation Javelin" was just a little too goofy looking. It definitely didn't look like a C3.

They look a little goofy without the spoiler, but with it they look similar to all the competition. Better than the 71-74 Charger, 73-74 Challenger and Satellite. Better than the non-Hatchback Mustangs, better than the big bumper Novas, 74 Camaros, 74 Firebirds. I could go on lol

2023 and people still think it's 1973 with the white letter tires, facing out.

That’s because it looks good on old cars.

As much as I 😍 the '70-earlier Javelin & AMX, the only good thing about the 2nd Gen Javelin was the 401. What drugs were the AMC designers on? That thing is as ugly as the Gremlin and Pacer.

the drugs they were on was called Progress, they were moving Away from Slab sided cars and using Curves.
