Creating a Mixed Wing for a Classic Salmon Fly (The Popham from Kelson)

  • In this video I show how to construct a mixed wing salmon fly. The wing is to be used in my next fly, The Popham. this pattern can be found in George Kelsons, The Salmon Fly. the materials I use in this video are:
    Golden Pheasant Center Tail
    Kori Bustard
    Peacock Wing
    Red Macaw
    Green and Blue Macaw
    Guinea Hen
    Bronze Mallard

      Your welcome. And thank you for watching!!! This is a general idea of how to make a mixed wing. However I have learned more since this video and have found there are more specific ways to make them. I am still working on perfecting the technique. I will be making another video on it in the future!!!

    Where did you get Kori Bustard?

      Kori is hard to get. I order most materials.from Feathers.com. John McLain on occasion gets kori feathers from the kori Bustard Foundation. When he has is, he gives it away to customers as kind of a surprise with their orders. Other than that, I usually find it through people I know and trading material for it. There is usually some on ebay however I don't like buying from places in ebay simply because that can create a market for poachers overseas to kill bustards and illegally import them. Getting kori from places like FeathersMC, the feathers come from birds at zoos and are humanly collected when the birds molt.
