This is what I felt surviving a mental illness. Manic depression from a brain injury. Every emotional blow was ten times the emotions it should have been and I felt like I was constantly wounded. I remember hearing this on Vampire Dairies and thinking, "Jesus, this is a F'ing seriously heavy tune" (similar to the scene/episode...that whole season). It's one of those songs that gives you goosebumps and hits your soul. I had to find it immediately... that was... several years ago. Still hits like the first time.
It seems so simple, but that's the trick. The acting, editing, music, effects, cinematography, lighting, drone shots. They friggen nailed all of it. Tracking those shots for the arrows must have been hard work. Perfectly executed...pardon the pun. To come up with a concept like this and execute it perfectly is a real talent.

Nabil's imagery is powerful here and he did a great job with this video. The openness of the interpretation is so great with this. My interpretation is that this shows a man's walk (run) through life (the forest and field) while dealing with issues of this world (the arrows) that leads him to depression and self-sabatoge (pouring gasoline on himself) to accept his fate and end it all on his own terms (turning around to the wave of flaming arrows without running). You know what I'm hinting at. The forest symbolizes our teen years where we were cared for by others and even though there were hardships, we had (if we were fortunate enough) family to help take care of them. The arrows would hit the trees (our family) and block most of the shots. The field the man runs into symbolizes us leaving the comforts and protections of our family; moving out to live on our owns. There's no trees to block the arrows. Everything falls on us to outrun or withstand the arrows ourselves. The gasoline is him drained/depressed and ready to end it all. This song is so magical, like all of Alt-j's songs. But this song feels more, I don't know, delicate? Yeah. It's so gentle yet so powerful. This song really is a gift.
The video is a metaphor to life's struggle, when we get hit , we fall and then we rise. There comes a point in our lives that we become strong and eventually our realisation of this pain will make us overcome, endure to confront pain and laugh at it and eventually destroy it.
This reminds me of the story of Chiron. The half mortal, half immortal centaur (Saggitarius) who gets wounded and his mortal side feels the pain but his immortal side won't allow him to die. Eventually he accepts the pain and requests that Zeus allow him to become fully mortal and just die. Moved, Zeus turns him fully immortal instead. Zeus here is represented by the physical laws of science and chemistry: arrows and fire. On his quest for a cure before he accepts his predicament, Chiron heals many others. This is represented by us the watchers of the video, and our relationship to the man on the screen helping us process pain of some kind by providing catharsis. The fire represents either death or immortality.
My wonderful partner died last year of the cancer that he had had for ten years and had struggled to heal from. He liked alt J and this was one of his favourite songs and I remember him showing me this video. Like Chiron he was a very gifted teacher who worked with special needs children who often had suffered trauma and like Chiron he had a wound himself (derived from trauma from his childhood that manifested itself in cancer) that in the end he submitted to.(he refused the treatment by the end, as it was ruining his body and causing a lot of suffering) He was born in the critical degree of Sagittarius. I told him the story of Chiron and how Zeus made him immortal and placed him in the stars. I feel he played out this deep Sagittarian myth in his life, expressing the highest of Sagittarian values. He will always be immortal to me......but boy, I wish he was still with us.
Several years ago when I was working in Alaska I would sometimes take a kayak out with some cigarettes, a six pack, and a joint. I'd paddle out a few miles into the ocean and have a drink and a smoke and just feel the flow of the waves and enjoy the scenery. I'd go sit myself on some rocky bank and listen to some tunes and watch the birds and the ocean and the trees. This song reminds me of those times and I miss it so much.

I remember hearing this on Vampire Dairies and thinking, "Jesus, this is a F'ing seriously heavy tune" (similar to the scene/episode...that whole season). It's one of those songs that gives you goosebumps and hits your soul. I had to find it immediately... that was... several years ago. Still hits like the first time.
It seems so simple, but that's the trick. The acting, editing, music, effects, cinematography, lighting, drone shots. They friggen nailed all of it. Tracking those shots for the arrows must have been hard work. Perfectly executed...pardon the pun. To come up with a concept like this and execute it perfectly is a real talent.

Nabil's imagery is powerful here and he did a great job with this video. The openness of the interpretation is so great with this. My interpretation is that this shows a man's walk (run) through life (the forest and field) while dealing with issues of this world (the arrows) that leads him to depression and self-sabatoge (pouring gasoline on himself) to accept his fate and end it all on his own terms (turning around to the wave of flaming arrows without running).
You know what I'm hinting at. The forest symbolizes our teen years where we were cared for by others and even though there were hardships, we had (if we were fortunate enough) family to help take care of them. The arrows would hit the trees (our family) and block most of the shots. The field the man runs into symbolizes us leaving the comforts and protections of our family; moving out to live on our owns. There's no trees to block the arrows. Everything falls on us to outrun or withstand the arrows ourselves. The gasoline is him drained/depressed and ready to end it all.

I heard it first without the video and the term "hunger of the pine" conjured up an image of being pulled into pine boxes and swallowed by the earth... yeeeah there's some Covid anxiety in there. The video is a metaphor to life's struggle, when we get hit , we fall and then we rise. There comes a point in our lives that we become strong and eventually our realisation of this pain will make us overcome, endure to confront pain and laugh at it and eventually destroy it.

This reminds me of the story of Chiron. The half mortal, half immortal centaur (Saggitarius) who gets wounded and his mortal side feels the pain but his immortal side won't allow him to die. Eventually he accepts the pain and requests that Zeus allow him to become fully mortal and just die. Moved, Zeus turns him fully immortal instead. Zeus here is represented by the physical laws of science and chemistry: arrows and fire. On his quest for a cure before he accepts his predicament, Chiron heals many others. This is represented by us the watchers of the video, and our relationship to the man on the screen helping us process pain of some kind by providing catharsis. The fire represents either death or immortality.

My wonderful partner died last year of the cancer that he had had for ten years and had struggled to heal from. He liked alt J and this was one of his favourite songs and I remember him showing me this video. Like Chiron he was a very gifted teacher who worked with special needs children who often had suffered trauma and like Chiron he had a wound himself (derived from trauma from his childhood that manifested itself in cancer) that in the end he submitted to.(he refused the treatment by the end, as it was ruining his body and causing a lot of suffering) He was born in the critical degree of Sagittarius. I told him the story of Chiron and how Zeus made him immortal and placed him in the stars. I feel he played out this deep Sagittarian myth in his life, expressing the highest of Sagittarian values. He will always be immortal to me......but boy, I wish he was still with us.

Several years ago when I was working in Alaska I would sometimes take a kayak out with some cigarettes, a six pack, and a joint. I'd paddle out a few miles into the ocean and have a drink and a smoke and just feel the flow of the waves and enjoy the scenery. I'd go sit myself on some rocky bank and listen to some tunes and watch the birds and the ocean and the trees. This song reminds me of those times and I miss it so much.
