you never cease to amaze me with these videos i've always associated rin's water aura with just his calm and collected playstyle in his neutral state and didnt think much of it, but the duality with the metaphor of heat that is constantly brought up blew me away, even more so with the sinking and deep sea scenes (which i always interpreted as stand alone more generic metaphors) being related to it i also love how sae's monster in rin's head in 273 (when he stops his first score chance) is of a light gray, without legs and in a casual shirt, staring blankly as rin only thinks of "would" and "if", but that quickly turns into an "is" when in 275 sae's monster turns solid, a full body almost completely black and coated in the deep sea monters ready to drown rin's ego. sae's monster now speaks, it has become stronger, taking over rin's head, making him doubt and sink. he begs for a new impulse, his eyes pleading for someone that can break him free from the frigid sae calling him tepid. and so, yoichi isagi appears, destroying sae's monster and vowing to put his life on the line. as rin crashes with isagi and prepares to shoot, his eyes and aura go back to the destroyer, but when he kicks the ball, his scleras are white with only the spirals in his eyes, his aura being only strokes of what i would guess looks like pressurized water; the destroyer monster was truly only holding him back, it was the monsters of the sea after all, and what rin needed wasn't that. what rin needed was the heat and pressure isagi brought him, an ego so strong that it could break through the most chilling of thoughts and ignite a flame that evaporates any monster rin is my favorite character and this video elevated him so much, thanks a lot!!

Great analysis man, the idea that Rin is represented with the aura of water makes all the sense. It all goes back to the contrast between him and Sae, as Sae's a very calculated player with a robotic and numeric visual representation while Rin has a water aura. This reminds us of the classic idea of how water destroys electronics but it goes deeper than that. When we look at Rin's toys it becomes clear to us where the author is going with the brothers' story line, the monster toy represents Rin and it reminds me personally of Godzila an unreal, fantastical, and illogical monster that comes out from deep waters to destroy everything civilized, while the other toy which we see demolished in a very important chapter represents Sae, as it's basically a robot toy. Some may argue that the second toy is a hero or a hero wearing a robotic suit which can also remind us of the hero of blue lock and the guy who theorizes football, Isagi, which also makes sense, but I lean more to the brothers' rivalry due to its symbolism and build up.
This is a brilliant comment! Can't believe I didn't think of Godzilla emerging out of the water, you're absolutely right that that's a brilliant way to bring together all these threads of imagery! Hey thanks so much, it really makes me glad to hear that I'm able to make people appreciate Blue Lock even more! The dying the water moment did cross my mind as well while making this. I mainly left it out because it isn't entirely clear to me yet how this intersects with Rin's story - I guess mainly because the manga touches on issues of team identity/dynamics less overtly with PXG compared to the other NEL teams. Also, not sure if you saw me touching on the child/adult stuff in some of recent streams, but that's gonna be the topic of my next video! There's a lot to unpack on that front so I hope you'll be looking forward to it
Rin is actually a very rigid person in terms of his mindset and that seems to be at odds with, and the thing that has been limiting his true personal play style which is constantly flowing and changing which you touched on when you talked about the water representing the spectres that tie him down. I never saw the water as a contradiction to the narrative of fire, and Rin as a monster so that was interesting. Rin’s new aura depicting his broken toys as eldritch Lovecraftian horrors is very cool, obviously an indicator of how scary he is, and how he is destroyer by nature, and must transform into a true monster, as an acknowledgment of his true ego. You mentioned how Rin went into the metaphorical Mariana Trench of his ego. I emerge one of the chapters, I think it was chapter 272, where he was beginning to awaken, was called “pressure”. Now that you have said this I can’t help but think this actually refers to the pressure felt at increasing depth levels in the sea, and how one can easily be crushed at a certain depth. I think I understand why Rin kept saying he “puts his life on the line” here. I thought “it’s just football”. But I think for him, he is trying to walk the tightrope of diving deeper, while at the same time not diving so deep that the pressure crushes him. The pressure is a motivator but also his potential demise. When he talks about “dying” I think he is referring to his single minded obsession with destroying and the joy it gives him, causing him to do reckless things. Like how he jumped from a high place as a child and hurt himself. He felt good after acting an amazing goal despite getting hurt in the process. The consequence he must avoid is making such a reckless play where he actually gets a career ending injury. As for Sae, he is like a football conspiracy theorist. He literally went into the “real world” then came back into the matrix and realised it’s all fake and stupid. He’s trying to get Rin to realise that he won’t get any better until he challenges himself and opens his eyes to the truth.
Brilliant call with the chapter titled Pressure. I quickly checked, it's ch 268, the one where Rin enters his flow state (with the broken toy at the bottom of the page) so I think your reading is spot-on there! Now I wish I could add that to the video haha I also like the point that Rin is gradually revealed to be more rigid than he initially seems, which is at least somewhat at odds with the water metaphor. Might be tied into how both his initial presentation and the beliefs he holds about himself are proven to be misguided as well

It's something I still would love to read but the honest answer is that I don't have enough free time to properly sit down to read a VN at the moment I'm afraid. Plus in all honesty my priority as a massive Kanon fan would be the other Key VNs (Clannad/Air/Little Busters)
Hi! I was expecting something about Rin and, as always, you delivered another beautiful video analysis. The idea that Rin's water aura symbolizes his act of putting out everyone elses fire is brilliant. It's almost too on the nose once you really start to think about it, taking into account all the instances in which fire and water symbolism have been used throughout the manga. Rin's aura is also a consequence of his brother's complex, and I don't think it's a coincidence that Sae's preferred activity outside of soccer is staring at the ocean. Sae embodies coldness and tranquillity, just like the surface of the ocean on a chill winter morning. Rin embodies completely opposite qualities, such as turmoil, unfathomability, terror... but each one of them can still be rightfully associated with water. Where one Itoshi brother sees a placid calm, the other imagines monsters lurking in the deep. They are one and the same and not at all, which is why I think they would be extremely compatible on the pitch. My thoughts on Sae are still a bit murky because I'm more prone to believe that he understood Rin's ego as a kid and did everything he could to protect his originality. He was aware of the fact that their parents saw Rin as a little freak, always causing trouble, and he also understood how much their parents' rejection made Rin suffer, so he tried his best to reassure Rin that there's nothing wrong in being "weird" and that he was just as weird as him. So basically, I don't really think Sae put out Rin's fire, at least not when they were children. Sae strikes me as the typical older sibling who was supposed to always be perfect. He covered up for his little brother's mistakes, appeased their parents and assumed the mantel of Japan's prodigy, thus coming back with an extreme disgust towards other people's expectations. He can't stand to be encapsulated into definitions and paradigms he didn't choose for himself, that's why Rin himself had that moment of clarity in the U20... They're brothers after all. Before leaving I'd like to know what do you think Sae's reaction would be to current Rin. I'm very interested in your input. As always, thanks for your beautifully crafted analysis.
Hey, lovely to hear from you as always! That's what I find so interesting about Kaneshiro's use of metaphor really: the first step is, at least in theory, very on the nose (water extinguishes fire), but he concurrently plants seeds to eventually expand on these metaphors in really exciting ways. My academic specialty is poetry and I'd unironically say Kaneshiro is up there with the very best poets in the ways he uses metaphor. You may well be right about Sae btw, I probably didn't give enough credit to him looking out for Rin before he left and all. I guess I should have made a clearer distinction between Rin's projection of Sae and what we've seen from the actual character, because I definitely agree that there's a discrepancy between these things. At the same time though my working assumption about the reunion scene specifically is that Sae there was taking out his own insecurities on Rin, not that this was some ploy to bring out Rin's ego or something (unless we're shown otherwise later, of course). Might be me projecting my own shortcomings as the eldest sibling there as well though haha As for how Sae would see current Rin, that's a really interesting question! To start with, what's interesting about Sae is that there's a discrepancy between his character want and his character needs. He says he wants to be the number one midfielder, to win the champion's league, but at least how I see it (you've probably seen my U20 video so I won't go into too much detail on that here), these are all 'compromises' of sorts because the Sae at the start of the series lost his ability to believe in his actual dream. So Sae's character need is to come to understand that you can uncompromisingly shoot for the moon even if you're from a nation like Japan. Which is why he saw in Isagi a future for Japanese football and not in Rin at the end of the U20 match. So from this perspective, I suspect that he still wouldn't approve of Rin post-PXG, simply because I don't see a scenario where Rin's urges to going out in a blaze of glory against the strongest hero would fulfill Sae's character needs, if that makes sense?
@suzelsmanga You're so right about Kaneshiro's talent for symbolism and multilayered narration. You can experience everything at surface level and still get a perfectly satisfying story, but if you dig deeper, there's a lot of subtlety to unpack (subtlety that you're kindly eviscerating for all of us). I'm also on team "Sae is NOT another Itachi"(probably because I hate Itachi and his convenient hypocrisy 🤣). Sae explicitly defended Rin during their childhood though, and I do think he saw his originality as something that he needed to protect. Their dynamic changed completely when he realized how much his brother had been influenced by Japan's football philosophy and he couldn't see any hope for him anymore (mainly because he was projecting his own insecurities on Rin). Rin's words hurt him, it wasn't an act, and I definitely don't think he's being mean to him because he wants to trigger his awakening. Sae is working only for his own benefit (until otherwise proven), cause in order to become the best midfielder, he needs an incredible striker at his side. He would be fine with everyone worthy, it doesn't have to be Rin, but he knows what Rin's ego is all about (we have a specific panel focusing on his reaction to Rin's declaration of purpose), so I feel like, deep down, he still hopes to see his brother coming back to being an instinctive force of nature (in the U20 he was pleased that Rin could still unleash his destructive tendencies). That's why I thought Sae would be pleased by current Rin, but your answer made me reconsider 😵💫 Sometimes, it's easy to forget that Sae himself is probably still undergoing his own character development and that his judgment is not necessarily Blue Lock's gospel. He has already been proven wrong about his prejudiced views on Japan's soccer future, and it seems like he needs to be proved wrong about Rin too. The thing that really is scratching my brain is Sae's apparent want to be proven wrong (he would've never engaged with Blue lock if his convictions were really that set in stone). There's a lot of subconscious (or should we say submerged) hope still lurking underneath, and I feel like said hope involves Rin too. And as always, I've overstayed my welcome... Thanks a lot for engaging with this brainrot about Sae. Your input consistently provides new interesting points. I'll definitely ponder about Sae's character needs/wants more
Awesome video and subbed bcuz of it. But why do you say "tepid" instead of "luke warm"? I assume you read another translation for the manga but I assume you've seen the anime and luke warm sounds cooler than tepid LoL
Hey really glad to hear you enjoyed the video! As for translations, tepid is from the official digital manga translation, lukewarm from the fan translation. My general policy is that I stick with the official translations unless I have good reasons not to. It's interesting to me that quite a lot of people have very strong preferences between tepid and lukewarm, where I genuinely don't have any feelings on this one really. Now the one thing that does actually really upset me is that for the physical English releases they actually replaced tepid/lukewarm with weak. That's a downright travesty in my book lol Also I actually haven't seen the anime haha, I barely watch anime these days and from the clips I've seen I get the sense that I'd enjoy it less than the manga. So I didn't know the anime went with lukewarm as well!
@@suzelsmanga Oh okay, thanks for the explanation and it makes sense. Yeah the anime says luke warm so hearing tepid feels wrong to me LoL. I watch the anime and read the scans so the tepid thing was actually completely new to me but it's interesting to find out. Thanks for responding 😁

Great video as always Suzels I think rins whole monster story is quite interesting because the hero uses the life of the other people to overcome the monster and I’m wondering if that foreshadowing isagi deafeating rin in that way for the final goal
The short answer is watch my U20 video haha. Basically being a hero is the end point for Blue Lock, in that Blue Lock aims to create a lone hero on top of 299 corpses and that a hero is also needed to give rise to a new future for Japanese football. So the hero/monster dynamic is key to understanding Rin's relation to Blue Lock's overarching aims
I'm sure I will end up doing more like this because I really enjoy talking about Blue Lock's use of imagery/metaphors. I generally try to avoid forcing topics so I'm not sure if I'd do Shidou specifically though, at least I haven't picked on anything yet that I can dissect on this level for him. I have touched on other characters' aura/flow design elsewhere though (although in less detail than in this one): - Barou: The King and the Kingmaker & The Power of Hunger - Bachira: Why Bachira is Isagi's First Friend - Nagi: Episode Nagi's Tarot Readings Explained Also if you are looking for Shidou analysis more generally, go check out my U20 analysis (or Right in the Womb: a literary analysis, which is only the Shidou parts but with worse gear/editing) plus Shidou's Freedom.
There are many flows. There are flows with entities and they are just eye flow. Entity flow is a form above the eye flow. Isagi's flow is neither an entity or eye flow. Instead he got his own puzzle brain. Why? Is a symbolizing that he is the monster?

Plus in all honesty my priority as a massive Kanon fan would be the other Key VNs (Clannad/Air/Little Busters)
i want whatever kaneshiro and nomura are on
and you for noticing all this stuff and connecting it all together
Bro took Bruce lee quote too seriously. “ be water my friend”.
Just finished the video. Gotta rewatch it when i'm home
Wow that's a massive compliment, thanks so much!
@@suzelsmanga loving your analysis dude🫶🏻
"You can flow or you can crash." "Be water my friend." meanwhile Rin shoots a crash shot against Isagi. Bruce Lee was onto something.
Might be me projecting my own shortcomings as the eldest sibling there as well though haha
As for how Sae would see current Rin, that's a really interesting question!
That's why I thought Sae would be pleased by current Rin, but your answer made me reconsider 😵💫
Sometimes, it's easy to forget that Sae himself is probably still undergoing his own character development and that his judgment is not necessarily Blue Lock's gospel.
I'll definitely ponder about Sae's character needs/wants more
Amazing video!
the water is his fluid formless playstyle; also water permeates through the cracks in the defense
Thanks for this video rin itoshi is my favourite character and today I got to know something new about him😊😊
I really love hearing that!
Father Suzels brought home dinner, we eating good tonight 🙏
The bluelock hero and its monster resident 😂😂
That's a downright travesty in my book lol
Also I actually haven't seen the anime haha, I barely watch anime these days and from the clips I've seen I get the sense that I'd enjoy it less than the manga.
W video bro can u do one for isagi and Charles next?
Hey Sean. I felt a lil bit nerdish, so I wanna tell you that Isagi's puzzles have disintegrated a few more times than you suggest. Chapter 190 page 10, chapter 273 page 13 and chapter 230 page 6 are ones that come to mind.
Great observation! I actually noted one of those as well sometime after putting out the video, so I'm more than happy to take the L on that one.
damn got me in a trance the whole vid
Rin destroyer state is monster come out from deep water
Time for peak 🙏
Holyy shitt after watching this I’m seeing stuff differently nd every time isagi has black puzzle, it just might be the puzzle piece is actually burned. The latest chapter with isagi in the end give that idea looks like the puzzle piece are burning/burned
Oooh interesting! I'll pay attention to the black puzzle pieces going forward, I knew it's a thing but I haven't given it that much thought haha
@@suzelsmanga same but with your new perspective you give me it makes sense since something thats completely burnt is usually black but it can Just be a color choice 😭😭
Great video as always Suzels I think rins whole monster story is quite interesting because the hero uses the life of the other people to overcome the monster and I’m wondering if that foreshadowing isagi deafeating rin in that way for the final goal
I really like that idea! I'm sure I'll revisit the whole hero/monster theme at some point because it's one of my favourite themes in the story
ima bit curious to see what isagi being the real hero could mean for em cuz it could be something cool or just symbolism for rin
Can you do more flow design analysis? I’d like to see why Shidou has dragon wings
I have touched on other characters' aura/flow design elsewhere though (although in less detail than in this one):
- Barou: The King and the Kingmaker & The Power of Hunger
- Bachira: Why Bachira is Isagi's First Friend
- Nagi: Episode Nagi's Tarot Readings Explained
Also if you are looking for Shidou analysis more generally, go check out my U20 analysis (or Right in the Womb: a literary analysis, which is only the Shidou parts but with worse gear/editing) plus Shidou's Freedom.
@@suzelsmanga I look forward to this series and I’ll check the video out, keep it up.
God this is so cool
Video on aikus snake aura?
I miss lukewarm
Here extremely early, excited to dig into the topic
So is rin a firery water person
There are many flows. There are flows with entities and they are just eye flow. Entity flow is a form above the eye flow. Isagi's flow is neither an entity or eye flow. Instead he got his own puzzle brain. Why? Is a symbolizing that he is the monster?
Nice video
Wow, bro be watching at 5x speed
@@suzelsmanga nah just expected it to be good
Interesting 🤔😎👍🔥
❤️
also is anyone hear Christian? in Christian tradition the world started with water but it ends in fire 😤
❤❤
Yeah Lukewarm >>>>> Tepid
Rin is such a dumb character, a cheap Sasuke clone that serve no purpose, Nagi would have been a much better main rival.
Your reading skills must be at the level of a preschooler if you think Rin's character is useless. You seem to not be able to grasp the concept of the "monster" archetype at all! Go educate youself quikcly before you spout nonsense in an actual important context and emberrass yourself publicly. And besides Nagi is a rival? Learn to read!!
