  • Hello friends & patriots! Welcome to another Chew & Chat. Today we will be eating and reviewing a bizarre looking fruit tart made with "ground cherries". So what are they? They aren't cherries, they aren't gooseberries (despite their nickname cape gooseberries) and they are not tomatoes. They are in a league of their own. Have you ever tried this rare American fruit? Will Ron hate it? Justine reads Americas 1st Ghost story from 1799.

Ground cherries are actually in the nightshade family, along with tomatoes, tomatillos, peppers, and potatoes. The husks help to keep the insects off the fruit, which is a nice feature. Ground cherries are a unique flavor, but they really grow on you in time. Ground cherries grew like weeds here in the North Georgia Piedmont. Thank you for the blessing Ron. Peace be with you.

Hi guys. So the grd. Cherry is in the Tomatillo family. It is chuck full of phytochemicals. Eat them raw or in salads
Make preserves, pies, or ice cream toppings, try
Drying them as raisins. Many medicinal qualities.
Treating earache, jaundice, fever, bladder disease, boils, sores, cuts, constipation, and digestive problems
Improving vision, blood sugar, sore throat, hydration, bone health, and immunity. I bet they would be good in American chop suey. I think got it right when he said, savory.

I've had a few demon experiences. When I lived with my boyfriend at age 18, I hung my grandma's pics of Jesus and Mary on the wall as I'd begun to wonder if Jesus is real. One night I turned the tv on and was for the first time watching a tv evangelist (it was the early 90's) just as I started to get into it I heard a demonic voice say, "You belong to us" I FLIPPED THE FREAK OUT! It took me awhile to look again into Jesus being real or not but the demons lost me😂 I still ended up getting Jesus! 🙏

I have a ground cherry growing in my garden. It self seeds so it seems to come back every year. I thought I had planted tomatillo but then they ended up yellow and definitely a different taste than tomatillo. They can survive in the desert 🌵 with some shade!

Greetings from Montana 👋😊❤🇺🇸 loved the ghost story this evening! I had two different occasions with ghosts. My aunt and uncle bought a house, fairly cheap, because a woman hung herself in the basement. When I was a kid, we would stay at their house and in the middle of the night, a chair would be knocked over coming from down in the basement. My second encounter was when I was managing an old west motel. In room number one somebody had killed themselves in it, and I would have several guests stay in that room, and they would complain about somebody messing around with the door knob, even though there was nobody there. Also, the owner had shot himself in my employee apartment, and all of the clocks, which I had that were digital, would read 88:88. I would fix them, and they would go back to that number! The lights also would dim themselves, even though they did not have a dimmer switch. I stayed there for two years, but could never bring myself to ever sleep in the bedroom. Too creepy! Really enjoyed hanging out with you this evening! Happy house building and have a blessed week!❤🇺🇸❤🇺🇸❤🇺🇸👻👻👻

I lived in a very haunted house just north of Cincinnati for almost four years. Voices, scratches, faces peeking around things, objects flying across the room, crescent moons burned into our clothing, slamming doors, hurting our dog, birds hitting our house and dying almost every day, and images in photographs. Etc etc. it was HORRIFYING! My husband finally got transferred out of state and his company purchased the house. It wasn’t an old house either. And we weren’t the only ones who saw and experienced all that evil. Yuck!!!

@@debbutante9591 it’s so strange because I would have said the exact same thing before having lived in it! In fact I say the same thing now that I’m out of it. But when you’re living there you try to explain everything away. You start to feel kinda crazy lol and so you diminish everything that happens. “Oh look. The pictures are all tilted to the left again. That’s weird. I must have slammed the door or something” “I must be seeing things. I must be tired. I’m working too hard. It’s my imagination.” All the coping skills go into full tilt. When we finally got the financial ability to move when the house was bought out then we couldn’t get out fast enough. In fact, the day we got the call that it was finalized I hung up the phone and shouted from the kitchen to the family room “the house is SOLD!” And just then we heard a crash upstairs. We all went to go see what happened and the glass shade from the bathroom light fixture had somehow come off, slammed agains the opposite wall, smashed into pieces on the floor, and we found some of the pieces around the corner. An impossibility. By then we were like “SO YOU THINK THAT WAS FUNNY?!” We we’re so done.

I saw an apparition when I was about six or seven years old. We lived in an old house that had radiators in each room and one night I woke up and saw a ghostly smoky form circling the radiator on my side of the bed. My sister and I shared the big bedroom and bed. It scared me and I yelled for my parents. As soon as my mom flipped on the light switch in our room the apparition disappeared! It never came back but I will never forget what I saw that night. That was about 73 years ago.

So I wondered about Friday the 13th also, and I did a bunch of research. Apparently, centuries ago people believed that Jesus was crucified on Friday the 13th, so from then on it was considered to be a bad day. But, it was just assumptions because no one knows for sure if it was the 13th.
Anyway, I just started watching you guys and I love how you both portray the time period! Pet Mish Mish for me! I have a black cat too but he is not as vocal as your little guy!

    • @e.urbach7780
      @e.urbach7780 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I had read that Friday the 13th was unlucky because Jesus was crucified on a Friday (so all Fridays are unlucky), and the 13th member of Jesus' group of students/disciples was Judas (if you count Jesus as one of the group, 11 disciples + Jesus = 12, + Judas = 13), who betrayed Jesus to the authorities so that He could be killed, so the number 13 is also unlucky. So that makes Friday the 13th twice as unlucky.

My house is around 100 years old. We have a little boy and a little girl here. We have heard the little girl laugh and she likes to be a little ornery. She will pull your blankets and giggles when you jump. I have seen the little boy a few times. The 1st time I was on my computer playing a game and felt like someone was in the room with me. I had 2 grandkids living with me so I thought it was one of them. I turned around and he was standing by the door. I though it was Ethan so I told him just a minute and turned around to put my game on pause. When I turned back around he was gone. I went to my grandsons room to see what he wanted and he was sound asleep, in red pajamas. The boy I saw had on black pants and a white shirt. The more I thought about it, the clothes looked like they were from an older time period. I have caught glimpses oh him a few times since then. They mean no harm so we just leave them be.

My spooky story: I bought a house in 2019 that had been built in 1940, so not a super old house but old enough to be haunted lol👻🫨! Soon after my boyfriend at the time and I moved in, I began having reoccurring dreams on a regular basis where I would be in the bedroom at this house, and someone would knock on my bedroom door. When I opened the door, a sweet little old lady in a long purple house robe and slippers would be standing in the hallway, smiling at me. I never felt afraid of her though. She seemed like a warm, kind person. She would look at me smiling and just say “Hello😊”, and I’d wake up. I never told my boyfriend about this at the time because I worried that he would think I was going crazy.
A few months after we moved in and I’d been having these dreams, I started noticing my cats would go into the kitchen, and from where I could see them from the living room, they looked like they were looking up at someone who was bent down to pet and scratch them (if you have cats, you know this behavior I’m talking about). It creeped me out, because even when I would call them to come to me, they would completely ignore me which was unlike them. They loved whoever was playing with them in the kitchen lol.
Fast forward another few months and my boyfriend who worked as an HVAC technician, had arranged for his coworkers to come to our house while we were on vacation to clean our air ducts. While they were there cleaning, we got a phone call from one of his coworkers. He asked us if we have any elderly neighbors who might have dementia or something. We knew our neighbors well at that point since we lived on a cul-de-sac with only 3 houses. We explained we did not. He told us that he was on the floor in the living cleaning the vent directly under our main front window when he heard a knock at the door. He got on his knees to look out the window and said an old lady wearing a long purple house robe and slippers was standing at the front door🙃🙃🙃🙃. My blood went cold. I asked him what color hair she had and how tall he was, etc. and he described the woman I was seeing in my dreams to a T!!! He told us he got up and had to walk around our couch to get to the door, but by the time he got there, she was gone. He said he walked around the entire outside of the house but she was GONE. That’s why he asked if maybe it was a neighbor who had dementia or something. And remember, I had not told my boyfriend about these dreams, and this lady because I did not want him to think I was crazy, so there’s no way that him and his coworkers were playing a joke on me. I did not tell anyone about these dreams.
When we got home from vacation, we decided to look up the history of the house. The house was built by a couple and they both passed away there of old age about 10 years before I bought the house, and a few other families had been in and out of it before we moved in. No wonder no one else stuck around for long🤣 I found the obituaries online for the original owners and wouldn’t you know… There was a picture of this lady… and her obituary mentioned she deeply LOVED her cats🥹❤️Everything made sense.
We were never afraid of her though. Her presence was actually very calming and warm. I actually kinda miss her because I sold the house to move for work a couple years later.

Hi Justine & Ron! I just came across your video a few minutes ago on the ground cherry pie. This is such a treat for me to watch. My dear grandpa, a true cowboy who farmed in Central North Dakota, grew ground cherries. I never remember him or my grandma ever baking them in pies or making jams, but only recall eating them with my cousins, siblings & grandpa straight out of his garden. The last time I had them was about 1980 when I was 9 years old, that is until this last summer. Around June this last year, I popped into a co-op grocery store, and saw pints of ground cherries when I was walking through the produce section. I stopped dead in my tracks. 😳 I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I was brought to tears, I was so happy! I bought a pint, popped one in my mouth as soon as I got to my car, and cried tears of joy once again! 🥲😌😊 All of the memories of spending time at my grandpa's house, and in his garden came rushing back to me. ❤❤❤❤❤❤ When I tasted them, I thought they tasted like extremely mild tasting pineapple. I was in 7th Heaven, munching on those ground cherries that afternoon. Thanks so much for posting this video! You 2 have the best channels on TH-cam!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

OMG, I am so jealous! I live in Asheville, and I can’t believe I didn’t know they were auctioning that couch! I guess it’s a good thing or we might have been in a bidding war. I love your shows, especially the cooking ones. I have all the cast iron cookware that has been handed down through my family for generations, most of the things that you use. Thanks for the info about the gate marks, so I can check and see more closely exactly how old they are. Have furniture, flax wheel, candle moulds, and other things that have been handed down from the 1800s also. My family has been in Asheville since 1784, the earliest settlers that survived. Like you, Justine, I can trace my family back a lot further also. Again, enjoy your shows so much.

He fought in the Revolutionary war , His wife fed the soldiers and their horses. They have plaques on their graves. Ralph Stanley music from the movie is a cousin to my Grandmother.

When I was a child I explored the area around where we had recently moved. We lived in East Texas (Tyler) and there were woods everywhere. In the 70s-80s parents sent you out and told you to be home by dark. I wondered the woods near our house and found...a house. It was Victorian style and very very old. It was so grown up around it that it was hard to see the color of the house. You could tell it was long since abandoned. I walked around and looked thru the windows. That night I told my Mom about it. She reported it and not long after the city came out and Rediscovered the house. Since I had found this long lost place I was allowed to go in right after it was opened. The house was still full of all its original furniture and stuff. I wandered upstairs and saw a child room full of dolls. One of the dolls turned its head and looked at me. I ran screaming from the house and never returned. This house is now a museum. It is called the McClendon house. I have emailed the museum to see if anyone else has ever saw anything I saw, but they did not respond.

Grow them on your property, away from your normal garden with you have left over uncooked. They require very little care and a couple plants will give you so much. I let some fall to the ground and every single one must sprout. There is another variety that has more of a pineapple taste but mine are the Aunt Molly variety which may be what you have We made salsa using them but I see they pair well roasted with other vegetables.

Alot of people like to eat them fresh. You have to wait until they fall of the bush to harvest. I wonder if it would be better milled and made into a jelly.

She didn’t want to scare the children. Ron: “So we go in the creepy cellar.” 😂😂😂
Dude, the guy was cooking out of a microwave which proves it’s true and very bad. Seriously though that house needs a exorcism. That stuff is true. I heard a creepy laugh like that in my house growing up. My mom was there and heard it as well. I’ve never worried about it though after I hung up a picture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, even when I lived by myself.

    Seriously so many paranormal experiences.
My house was haunted in Missouri. Boot steps, lights on and off Etc. one day i was brushing my teeth and with my black cat raven sitting on the sink watching me when suddenly he arched his back , hair raised and started hissing at something behind me.. I freaked out and took off screaming . Im not kidding when I say the cat was bristled up for 10 minutes after this. Have no idea what it was. Also had a shadow entity one morning I went in to wake up my husband and saw something move on my side of the bed i had to stop and let my eyes focus but there was a little 3 ft ghost looking back at me .. i said a cuss word because it startled me and it just so gracefully disappeared in one swoop into the floor. I have so many ghost experiences in this house in particular. When I moved to Florida 10 yrs. ago I had an experience just recently walking my dogs right after dark and noticed a nan standing in a stairwell in the building attached to mine and he had a hoodie and sunglasses on ( its dark though the glasses through me off) and was staring sideways at me which freaked me out. I went into my apartment and for the next two nights felt like someone was staring at me in the middle of the night well I knew then that what i saw was not an actual man was a ghost and I made him leave.. my apartment looked like a cheech and chong movie after I smudged the entire apartment and no more sleepless nights.
