I've been doing TH-cam research on repairing speakers. Yours is the first and only video I've found to show how and why to use shims. Many thanks. I also like the calmness of your presentation.
Hi thanks for your comments. As long as the cone is central it shouldn't rub on the magnetic pole piece. The paper strip idea works fine because you can add as much as you need.
Awesome, just the video I needed, I was finally able to fix my speakers (4 of them) after many attempts. It was a nightmare. I know some people say that shims are not needed, but I can say not in every case, as I had some issues with the cones on all of my speakers. After understanding what you were explaining in your video, I realized the paper cone near the coil, were damaged/weak, so I reinforced them with glue and some pieces of old foam in that area, and then I used the shims, like the video. It worked like a charm!!!! Thanks a lot for this video and mostly your explanation.
Hi Carlos I'm glad you found it helpful. Some times you can get away with not using shims but these were quite tight and as I had no idea how thick the shims should be I thought if I pack it with paper until it stops moving it should be central. It worked for me
@@ianevans67 hi Ian, yes, that was the part that made a difference, by using those layers of homemade shims, until it stopped moving. Before that, I was not getting them to be centered. Thank you
I have repaired a lot of speaker drivers. I never remove the dust cap; I do not use shims. First I glue the inner edge of the foam ring to the cone and let it set untill it can not slide or move anymore. When the inner edge is firmly fixed to the cone, I glue the outer edge of the foam ring to the chassis. While the glue starts setting, I feed a low frequence tone (50 - 100 Hz) to the driver. As long as the glue has not completely set, I move the edge around to its perfect position, where the voice coil is moving silently in the air gap, without scratching.
I have re-foamed a lot of drivers. I never remove the dust cap. First glue the foam ring to the cone and let it cure. When it is firmly attached connect the driver to an amp. Start gluing the outer perimeter of the ring to the frame. While the glue is still wet and setting, feed a low frequency signal to the driver and listen carefully for any sign of the voice coil rubbing. Move the foam ring until it runs without suspicious noise and you hear a clear tone. If necessary, increase the power while the glue sets. Nee need for shimming.
Of course, it doesn't modify nothing about the sound. I have a couple of Hpm 30 without the woofers, unfortunately they are very hard to find, even to refoam ! A hug from Roma !
@@TheDrummer64 I've had 40s 700s 900s but the hpm 30 is like gold dust. Always wanted a pair since I was a teenager. It took me 28 years to find those. Started looking before the internet was invented
I just popped open a 20nyear old yamaha subwoofer. It was making some cracking sound when plugged to the audio system... The entire foam cracked and fell in the floor after I pulled the front grill/panel! 😂 I guess I will apply your advice on how to refoam very soon... The headache is to find the right size of foam.
@@ianevans67 I have been digging but I dont think these sold heaps of this model. I found the service manual though which says it is a 8" 180mm speaker so that's already a start., I jsut tried to unscrew the speaker from the cabinet and it looks like they glued the screws too... f you have any trick to get these out easily I am happy to hear it :) have a good day!
To be honest I didn't really know what I was doing as I had refoamed before but without shimming and I had no idea how thick the shims should be so I thought copy paper would do and it seemed to work fine. They centered really well
Yeah I made a video of the process I used to re-foam the Advent Baby II's, I did not use shims, mainly because I did not want to remove the original dust caps, but the results were quite good. Check out the video if you want it's on my channel.
hello i'm french so excuse my english , i actually restoring some hpm 30 and i would like to know what kind of paint to use for the cone , like you thanks
Check for splits or cracks around the foam suspension. It does perish after a few years especially as the speakers are about 40 years old. A split will cause an air leak and a total loss of bass
@@ianevans67 foam was so fragile that it just fell of when i took speakers cover off. Speaker is pioneer hpm 30. So my bass comes back when i repare the foam?
My speakrs (ESB CS30) have the two connectors coming off underneath the dust cap and onto the woofer cone (a picture is here for reference www.likesx.com/diffusori-esb-cs-30-lazio/). How can I remove the dust cap without causing damage?
Shimming is a waste of time. Any decent speaker will be correctly aligned in it's natural resting position. All you need do is press the foam edge into the glue letting the force of the spider keep it aligned. If you have any reservations about it being properly centered, merely pushing it up and down a few times to check and making any (unlikely) needed minor adjustments while the glue is still workable is all that's necessary.
Internal color is different from the top colored with brush! Noob if you give new color on the papercone, than you make different characteristic of this speaker!! Specially his sensitivity. The cone is than heavier
@@ianevans67 if it's ok with you, it doesn't matter... but trust me they will sound bad and you will have to redo the seals, because it goes out of phase and you break everything
