    Just a heads up. Pulling the fish back while trying to release it (6:57) actually makes it harder for the fish to breathe. Instead move its head left to right. By pulling it back you bring water in through the gills unnaturally making it harder for the fish to get adjusted again. The backwards flow of water through its gills makes it difficult for the fish to readjust. Great catches though!

    the buck tails are sharp, I guess I am just old school as far as using well manicured baits for fluking and not using braid products...I am retired from fluking anyways but am amazed at how much things have changed....guess it keeps the boat cleaner

    Hey John, love the content you put out. Even the long videos where it's just you casting and fishing. I just watched the latest beach fluke fishing video from seamoneyfishing and he hooked and lost a fish in the wash and put the bucktail right in front of it and the fluke crushed it. It is more proof to what you preach about getting the bait right back in front of the fish asap. Check out his video, I'm sure you would enjoy it. Tight lines sir.

    John, when the tide is running too hard, I'm telling you try casting on the "wrong" side of the boat with a spinning rod. I've tripled my catch rate since doing that last year. I use a ball jig instead of a bucktail though. You can use half the weight by casting. I'm curious if you can do an experiment trying both of these methods to see which is better? I never have much luck vertical jigging. Plus the current in NJ is brutal, so you need 4-6 ounces most days for vertical jigging 60+ feet of water. Just something to think about. That's how a lot of ppl in NJ fish.

    • @brendanwoerner3352
      @brendanwoerner3352 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Engineer I agree but it’s all about conditions too. A lot of times i see guys using this method with wind against tide and it works well. Also depends on the boat. If it’s a party boat they don’t have a drift sock and it puts you at a disadvantage because you don’t know what the drift speed is.

    • @Engineer_Heathen
      @Engineer_Heathen 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brendan Woerner idk man, I can only talk from my experiences, and I went from getting maybe one keeper per trip if I was lucky (using John's method) to getting my limit almost every time out. Maybe I just suck at vertical jigging.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had no problem staying down with 3 ounces without scoping even at full current strength. The fish just shut down at that time. But let me ask you something - if you're casting in the direction to which you're drifting, don't you need to pull the jig up and re-cast rather frequently? I don't see how that would be avoidable once the jig goes under the boat. If the answer is "yes", then I feel like I'd be losing precious bottom time with that method. I appreciate the suggestion.

    • @Engineer_Heathen
      @Engineer_Heathen 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      John Skinner Fishing well I typically fish in the bow, so once I bring it back to the boat, I let it drift around the bow and then I jig it on the "right" side of the boat until I scope out. I catch a lot more fish this way because I'm not as good at vertical jigging as you lol. Been following you for years and read two of your books. Thanks for the reply.

    Great video John..... it brings up a question that I have. These days the only time I get to go out fluke fishing is usually on a party boat and I find it extremely difficult to fish as light weight jig as I would like without causing problems with tangling others that are using the boats equipment that have 4, 5, and 6 oz sinkers on their rigs. I honestly believe I would catch more fish if I were able to use an ounce less but getting tangled all the time prevents that. Any suggestions other than trying to get out in a smaller boat with less people... LOL? Or is this just something you just have to deal with when you're on a party boat? I've tried fishing different areas of the boat to avoid other fisherman but unless it's a very light day as far as the amount of fisherman that's pretty hard to do.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some guys will cast away from the boat, but I'm not sure if that will work out on the particular boat you're fishing. A lot of people jig from LI party boats.

    Hello John. I've been watching your fluke fishing videos especially when your in the kayak. I recently went fluking from a kayak for the first time with a friend. Very fun but scary at times with all the boats darting around us. I had a question about the gear specifically. We were having trouble finding deep water and with all the wakes it was difficult holding good consistent drifts. This made it really difficult to use the vertical jigging method. However we did find lots of shallow flats and sandbars. Would you recommend casting from a kayak for fluke using spinning gear in a case like this?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing

    Could you have used a drift sock to slow down your drift?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. The drift sock will only decrease the wind component of the drift.

    Pushing them back and forth doesn’t revive them just hold them in a steady position and they’ll kick away

    When you revive a fish don't pull it back and forth, water going through their gills the wrong way can hurt them, just hold em head first into the current

    Why do you make this look so easy, and why dont you drag a bait rod?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I rather focus on the jig and not be distracted by messing with a bait rod and all of the interference creatures messing with the bait. When I first started jigging a long time ago, I did exactly what you suggest, but came to the conclusion that for me the bait rod was counter-productive.
