Thank you all so much for checking out this tutorial! It is truly one of my favorite flies for swinging for trout and the occasional salmon. I hope it brings you as much success as it has me!
I love your videos. Finally a tier who uses simple materials and techniques. I am a Canuck who fishes the great lakes tribs on our side. Your patterns are super effective here!
Thanks for posting these videos. They are very well done. I tied a handful of these in olive (what I had on hand) and fished it yesterday ... the fish were all over it!
Nice pattern! Always appreciate spey flies that aren't overly complicated or using crazy materials. Super practical and seems really fishy. Will definitely tie up a few of these for winter. Thanks for sharing.
Have you tried to use a length of led ( or led-free ) wire along the bottom to weigh them "more evenly"?? One could also have more towards the head for jiggy action etc. Just a thing that popped inti my hyperactive head while watching your vids. Greetings from Iceland M8!!
Thanks very much for this lovely looking fly!, This morning I was inspired to go and tie a few wannabes... will fish them tomorrow; hope the trout like them as much as I do ;-)
My friend tied me a few flies that look just like this when I got my trout swing setup. Still in use even though they are ragged, the profile produces!
Excellent looking fly. I’m hucking bugs on a trout spey rod in Colorado. One of the few... :) I’m going to give this one a go in several colors. Thanks for sharing this pattern. Make it a great day.
What weight rods are you using in Alaska for trout? Seems a 5116, 5126 or 6 in the same sizes might be a good trout rod with enough backbone for the incidental hookups of larger species. I find it hard to believe you’d use 2-4. Maybe a 4....I guess.
@@jkdurden Mostly using a 13' 7wt, but 12' 6wts do really well. Some streams you could get away with 4 and 5 wt switch rods though. Of course there are lots of salmon around that can definitely be quite a challenge on smaller rods.
Thanks for the insight. I’d probably bring 5-8 if I come up again. Last time I was on the Kenai, I wasn’t a fly fisherman. I brought only a Camera. #FAIL. :-) Next time will be different....
Hey Jake! I do use a lot of the copper and copper/black polar cheniles in most of my flies, but you can definitely play around with many different color combos :) Thank you so much for watching!
@@CooperLandingFishingGuide Thanks! I’m tying up a bunch of stuff this winter for a fly in/float out on the north slope of the brooks for trophy Dolly.
I sure have! It does really well in lakes, especially with dumbell eyes. It sort of has a jigging motion. I've used it with full sink lines and floating lines as well. Thank you so much for watching and for the kind words! I hope it does really well for you!
Great question! I usually run 6/0 uni thread and the eyes are spirit river eyes, but I don't recall the size sadly. Thank you so much for watching though!
I had a streak of really bad luck with the hook point up and decided to start tying hook side down and it seems to have a better hook up ratio... that or I got better at hooking fish lol

love that piper cleaner trick! Great tie thank you
Sure thing! I can't remember where I first saw it, but yep, it's super helpful!

That's not a bad idea actually :). I'll definitely try that for sure!
This will be fantastic for our great lakes steelhead, right size with right amount of wiggle.
Definitely let me know how it works for you Lorne!
Excellent video and a perfect fly for the Tongariro River down under in NZ. Thanks.
Thank you so much John! I really appreciate the kind words and definitely let me know how it fishes for you!

Gidday, very nice work and great tips. Thankyou.
Nice, VERY NICE!!! Thanks Dave!
Thank you Hank! This one is my all-time favorite fly :)
Great tie! Been looking for something simple and effective here on the Snake River. Appreciate sharing this fly. Commence the tying!
Thank you Tyler! By far my favorite up here in AK for trout :)
@@CooperLandingFishingGuide tied a couple up with a #3 OPST swing hook in colors we use here on the Upper Snake. Great Pattern!
@@tylerdooley4783 Thanks man! Love those hooks! Can't wait to see how they do for you!

Awesome, thanks tons for the techniques, saweet lookin
Awesome! I'm glad you like it! I use this one every day and it is by far my most productive. I hope it works for you as well!
Love those dumbell eyes. Can you share the make and model of them? Never seen a match before
Thank you so much for watching! I believe these are the Spirit River Real Eyes Plus.. not sure the size though.
Do you use that same UV polar chenille Copper color for the white version?

Nice
I tie a fly that is very similar and it's an absolute staple in my box. Incredibly effective! Out of curiosity, why did you land on hook point down?
Great fly, what thread and size of eyes did you run ?
Thank you 🎣
Great question! I usually run 6/0 uni thread and the eyes are spirit river eyes, but I don't recall the size sadly. Thank you so much for watching though!
Do you think that this would fish well on the Missouri River / Montana in November? I’m thinking it would in a micro sz?
Oh yes! It sure would! Try some in this size and a bit smaller and let me know how they do for you :)
Do you have any examples of a steelhead variant?
I do! I'll definitely do a video for one :)
I wonder how it would do with a deer hair DnD style head.
I think it would do awesome :)
Why hook point down?
I had a streak of really bad luck with the hook point up and decided to start tying hook side down and it seems to have a better hook up ratio... that or I got better at hooking fish lol
I think it’s a sculpin
