Ammo Can Coffee Kit - A DIY Micro Camp Kitchen

Be careful if you plan on cutting on those floorboards. I definitely like your $12 ammo box idea over a $300 bespoke box from instagram. Thanks for sharing!
Wow, you're so inventive. I just buy cheap crap and hope it lasts.
Gunther shaking off the steam, like he was wet, was so cute. :)
Jon in rural BC, Canada
He'd just wrapped up a hearty session of digging up the bedding to make his burrow 😆
Fantastic kit. Thank you for sharing.
So many good ideas. I'm definitely using some of them. Thanks.
It’s the Martha Macgyver Show! Now I need to go down the mini camp kitchen rabbit hole. Thanks for that!
@DanitaReynolds... Yes, it is! That's a catchy title.
You read my mind.
@@cinnamongmc5430i like it and it fits...
I love it! You're ingenuity to MAKE something similar to what you've seen is amazing. I can really appreciate that. Dont get me wrong, I like watching those compact, fancy camping set ups too. But some of the equipment prices are 😳 obscene. I think what I like even more is watching you MAKE something similar, within some of our realistic camping budgets, but equally as functional and eye catching. Inspiring! Thanks for sharing! ✌🏽
That's very kind - and you nailed exactly what I was going for - thank you so much 😊😊😊
I like all of these. Those Korean/Japanese campers always leave me searching online for the cool stuff they have! And no you're not done! Where's your hiking kitchen? Tea or coffee with a snack or two on the trail or lunch! Heat water over your alcohol stove, maybe a tiny iCamp fold up table, small pot, you know the drill.
Don’t be giving me even more ideas!! My project list is already so long 😂
You are the Tiny Space Queen! Genius and it works! You go girl!
Nice but if you are just out for the day the Stanley thermos is made for coffee and is smaller than all those kits and lunchboxes. Have fun stay safe.
This is so very clever! Especially the little legs to hold the ammo can stable. I love it!
Martha you never cease to amaze me! Love it! ☮️❤️☀️
I have some wine crates, one now has removable legs that fits inside. I added cup hooks on the legs and a thrifted toaster oven rack that fits the inside space as well. Not as small, but cute af. Added travel stickers and belt closure.
hella cute!! 🥰
I like to turn the cute knob to max volume then break it off. Must remember wine crate decor
You are so creative, I am very impressed.
Love the idea you gave me will make one for car for traveling 😊
I love watching the things coming out of japan and korea, they are really taking esthetic glamping to some new levels. Some of it is very frivolous, but their areas to explore via car are much more limited and tame than ours in the US (and yes, I lived in both Japan and Korea for about 4 years each).
Same. There is so much style and care incorporated into every item. Regardless if it's precious or over-the-top, I am absolutely here for it.
Using the old sign supports was a smart idea. Nice job.
Bad a$$! Cool factor is off the chart. Thanks for the show and tell. 🤘
Thanks so much!
Perhaps it’s time for a kitchen compilation video showing all the cooling and heating methods
What you like to use & when.
Break it down for us.
You rascal You. 😎
I'll put it on the list! 😄
I love how you keep coming up with new and creative ways to improve how you camp, especially doing camp coffee! My three sons and I (and there’s always friends along too) head into the Boundary Waters in northern Minnesota every summer for a week. The two older ones each have their own coffee roasters at home, so camp coffee is always made from their fresh roasted beans, ground with a Porlex stainless steel hand grinder and brewed in an Aeropress. We use a .9 liter camping kettle. Nothing better than fresh coffee in the wilderness.
Oh, very serious coffee drinkers ☕🧐 Sounds amazing!
Gotta have one! That should be the full time kit that doesn't leave my car so if inspiration strikes, it's ready. Nice work. Keep 'em comin'!
Beautiful rest stop? Coffee! Stuck in traffic? Coffee! Getting an oil change? Coffee! 😂
I’m just starting out and wanted you to know you have the best ideas! That chair looks wonderful! Where can I get one?
Thank you! This is the chair I have:

Nice video, relaxing to watch. I view the videos you refer to with the stanley lunch pail. That gentleman is a dynamo of ideas. I made a copy of his and enjoy it. I like your ammo style version. Good Job!
Thank you and nice work, making your own 👏
If you are eligible, be sure to get the generous military discount at Stanley!
I am not, but I have friends 😏 Thanks for the tip!
Very cool. Looking for a setup I am comfortable with that doesn’t take up much space. I had looked into the Stanley lunchbox and here it is $72 Canadian so there is no way I am paying that plus tax for a box. Your idea is very cool.
And THIS is the reason I hang on to every gall dang piece of obscure hardware-everything has potential!!! I love your ingenuity.
This what I keep saying, as I defend my every-growing hoard of random brackets, braces, hinges, casters, flat metal, scrap lumber... 😅
@@ShoestringMartha I am now doing a major clean out. It’s painful to part with my pieces and parts. I can see I’ll be kicking myself in the future. I need an intervention!
Whaoa, exactly my idea! I thought the same way as you and have an old Ammo Box! Awsome! I will steal some of your ideas:-) Thank you so much for the video!
You're welcome and get after it! 😄
I still like the Stanley Lunch box idea. Because of how I've seen some one set the stove inside the lunch box and use a grate over the stove. So its very stable and out of the wind.
I have seen this as well, so of course I have to sort of dry-fit it into the ammo can, using my little grate. My butane stove is too big, but the alcohol stove fits, or those little backpacking stoves, if you're into that sort of thing. 😏
I love your ingenuity. Have you tried the Aeropress for your coffee? It's compact and makes an excellent brew.
I know of them, and have heard good things about them. I'm just a creature of habit, content with low-tech, mediocre-quality methods. 😂
Nice work, I actually paid a lot for the lunchbox to make a small coffee table. I like the Stanley color and quality.
Done??? Till something else strikes your fancy. LOL!!!!!! ive been asked.." why you need so many ways to make coffee or cook?" Hhhmmmm. Cause it's fun...and can be useful in emergency...CAUSE I CAN! LOL!!!!
It's the journey, not the destination! 😄
@@ShoestringMartha good words!!
I'm always interested in the builds you come up with. 😀👍 Okay, I enjoy everything on your channel; camping, cooking and hiking. Thanks for sharing all of it.😊
I've looked at those Stanley lunchbox coffee set ups too, and thought about making a tea equivalent (I am not a coffee drinker), but then I realized I don't really have good drive up spots, and those are a little clunky to hike in with, so I will stick with my current setup.
Love it, picked up an old ammo can at a rummage sale. Can't wait to give it a try.

Thank you for introducing me to your video.
Modifying the Stanley Lunch Bock is fun.
I look forward to working with you. Please come again (^^♪
Welcome! I am so happy that you visited. I adore your creativity!
All of my coffee gear goes in my stanley lunch box. Also a handmade wood tray..fits in top as a shelf ( by neighbor) and a small cutting board.. Except the fuel
I love these kits going to try to put some together with stuff I already own .
I love this. I love how smart your builds are. Inspiring!
Those pour over coffee filters with wings are what I use at home everyday. I love them. I need to fit the back of my e trike with a travel kitchen. Always searching for great ideas. Thanks for the demo.
A trike cafe would be the COOLEST
Omg, didn’t know about the ETrike… no no stop😊😅😮😢😂😊😊
I like it!!
Love ALL your camp kitchens!!
I have a similar idea and you've inspired me to start making it. I was thinking of making the lid a separate table with 4 legs, but your lid idea is good too.
I like it! Then you can put it wherever you want 🤔
That is so cool! A little portable coffee station. some of that can be incorporated into Vanlife has a space saving coffee center.
Wow! Your new video and editing techniques are so creative in this video. Love it!
Home brew Engineering at its best!
☕️📐🤓
Well done ! I am going to try to put one of these together as well, thanks for sharing!
😆😆😆
I love this! Well, done you👏👏
I love your determination to make your own style of mini portable kitchen, I been following your channel , I bought a 2003 GMC Yukon and now I’m finally home from seasonal work now to create a simple build on my rig, thx 🫶
Thank you and best of luck with your build! 😊
I love that you used an ammo can. I think it better than the original. 👌
Love this hack! Working on mine😊
Wonderful idea! Thank you for sharing.
Too cool, I have the same tan pouch like the one sitting on her tailgate. Similar obsession with tiny kitchens, strange.
It’s a strange affliction, but I suppose there are worse 😅
now i have a new purpose for my 40 yr old .50 cal ammo can. it is showing it's age as it does have a couple of rust spots at some of the spot weld points. you can also put your triangla pot holder on to the top of a sterno outdoor fuel canister. put the bottom over the opening in the fuel can.
The notches on my burner rack are off just enough to make it not sit on a sterno can quite right. Nothing an angle grinder can't fix!
@@ShoestringMartha no, no, no. no cutting required with a angle grinder. the large bottom hole in the stand. sits on top of the sterno camp ground fuel can. this is not a regular sterno can this is there camp fuel can. found your email sending you a couple of pics.
Hahah ok I understand now, but thank you - I'm a visual person. 😄
Love your videos! Great job again!
Very cool project. Great job.
Brilliant! G Ire
PS I think Ammo Box should incorporate your improvements! (For a fee, of course)
2nd PS' I'd love a link to all of your gear, through yoyr shopfront.
Awesome - thanks so much! www.amazon.com/shop/shoestringmartha
@@ShoestringMartha 🤗
So creative! Nice job Martha.
Where did you get your spirit burner, looks bigger then a Trangia.
It is a cheapo Amazon one, that's no longer in stock: amzn.to/4b7CFnZ Just shy of 3" in diameter.
I'm obsessed with #coffeeoutside too! A note about the alcohol stoves- my go to heating style for water. You want the top of the stove to be between 1.25- 1.5 inches from the bottom of the pot. You get the most BTU out of them with that distance. I found that many of the pot stands from aliexpress/amazon are around 1 inch. I know it sounds stupid but that 1/4 inch makes a difference. I started using the zencamps (Amazon) stainless steel pot stand with a cheapie titanium windscreen and it works great. The zencamps pot stand has different slots to hold a variety of stoves at a variety of heights. It's also got a cup for solid fuel tabs. I only ever use heet from the yellow bottle for my stove. There are a lot of resources here on youtube on modifying the cheap stoves to work better- like drilling out the jets for better fuel efficiency and angling them.
Your channel popped up randomly for me about a year ago and it has inspired me to build my own car camping set up and get my wife outside for coffee and hiking.
Great tips, thank you! I'm going to look for that stand. In the meantime. I might try and stack the other one I have (that's two pieces) atop the crown-shaped one -- depending on total height and tippiness. 🤔 Enjoy your outdoors time together! ☕⛰️
What kind of chair is that in the back of the vehicle when you’re testing the alcohol stove
It's this one! amzn.to/3UTfqHF
Love it! Your DIY's are great. I have never seen those Japanese chuck boxes. I know this video to alot to film and edit - Great job- your skills are definitely improving!!
Thanks so much!
Years ago, I made a mini chuck box out of a plywood owl's nest box that I saw at a feed store; 10x12x12 inches. After some tinkering on it to hold a 1lb propane bottle with a backpacker's stove, it has been a great kitchen to cook on inside my suv camper. It's also a nice little bedside table in my rig, since it sits next to my mattress on the floor. For small rig living or camping, I can't recommend these little camp boxes enough, I use mine every day.
Of course I had to google owl nest boxes so I could visualize it - and it seems like a very cool option! 😎
Martha, another good idea, love it. Although I'm not a coffee pro, usually instant for me when it's cold weather. Gives me the jitters & elevated heart rate. I'm going to use the ammo can idea for a small cook box. Keep up the good work. 👍
They really are handy things! Inexpensive, readily available, water-tight. You could totally do a little snack kitchen in one. 😃
Love it❤. What was the milk thing you squeezed to the coffee?
Thank you! It’s a pouch of sweetened condensed milk.
I randomly got fed one of your camp kitchen videos a couple weeks back and I’m so glad I did. I watched all 3 even though they were a couple years old. So I gave you a follow and I was rewarded with this awesomeness. I’m obsessed the ‘Coffee Box’ creations as well. Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much, and welcome!
What a fantastic idea! I too am obsessed with all things camp nerd! I’m about to rush out to harbor freight right now :) I’m sure my husband will roll his eyes… yet again😂 thanks for sharing.. love it ❤
I hear there's a big parking lot sale this weekend! 😆
Crazy lol
Freaking good job 👍
I like the ammo can idea.
Yes! I dig your setup. I just uploaded a video for my ammo can camp kitchen.
Stanley lunch boxes are neat, but ammo cans are way cooler 😎
True story! I'm going to go check out your video now 👀
@@ShoestringMartha right on! 👍 looking forward to your next clever hack
Brilliant. I love all the well thought out fabrication you did to really bring it home!
very innovative 😊
I like it. This is nice. I am building this too. Greetings from Germany 👍😘
Thank you and welcome! 👋😄
Genius level right there!
I have dachshunds and they bark! Gunther never barks! Have you trained him not to bark? 😊
Oh he barks!! Just less so when we’re camping, because there is less stimulus. He will bark if someone enters our site, which is fine with me. If people are walking by, he wants to bark at them, but I correct him, and he prettttty much listens. It’s just more motivation to find remote locations 😂
Love it and cool DIY❤❤❤
Thank you so much 🥰
You are so creative!!
Stealing this! :D
Hi! Can I ask what is the size of your ammo can? Is it 30, 50 or 70?
It is a 50 🙂
I am about to get a 4Runner for my travel car and you have given me a lot of great ideas. Thanks and have a great day!
Excellent choice! 😏
I'm impressed !!!
Genius creativity and purposeful utilization. Well thought out and executed. Everything fits!
What's the chair you sit on in the back of your SUV?
It’s this!
amzn.to/3Tho7el
Thank you!
Always tinkerin'! 🛠
I really, really love the ammo can-tina, but have honestly become too lazy to actually make coffee while camping, not when there's actually some very good instant coffee packets out there (namely Korean brand Maxim). But I'm considering doing up my own ammo can-tina just for the heck of it.
Also: I totally squealed at Gunther in his adorbs sweatshirt.
Always!! 😅 I'm going to look for that brand too, as I always carry some instant, as a back up. I also love "ammo can-tina" - that is fantastic 😄
I make 2qts of coffee for my 4 day trips in advance. All I have to do is pour some in a pot, warm it up, then pour in a cup. I also have an electric drinking tumbler when I don't want to deal with a stove.
Too lazy on my trips to "make coffee". Rather use the energy on a nice breakfast.
Hi! I love your videos and this is definitely one of my favorite DIY projects! Is it okay for me to reference this video on my next vid?
Of course! I'll be sure to check it out 😊
@@ShoestringMartha Thank you so much 🙏😊
Very cool 😎
I too had been looking at those Stanley Lunch Boxes, but the prices are so high. I like your ammo can adaptation.
Can you tell me about that chair? What a great idea.
It is this guy! amzn.to/3TEKTyd
Great ingenuity ❤ I'm a lot like you, love to make things to my liking!
Eine super Idee und dazu auch noch günstig im Vergleich zur Stanley Lunch Box! Ich werde mir auch eine zulegen! 👍👍👍
❤❤❤
Nice job! Brilliantly executed 👍
“To be continued…”😂
I’ve been looking forward to the ammo can coffee setup, but watching it, I came to an unexpected conclusion: it would actually cost me more than the overpriced lunchbox, because I don’t own or have free access to most of the tools I’d need to convert an ammo can the way you did. Sigh.
Still, as always, another brilliant DIY, and I really loved the extremely compact Firemaple pot version!
Thank you! Some day, I'm going to fit it all into an Altoids tin 🤣
@@ShoestringMartha I would absolutely adore that! 😆
@@ShoestringMarthayou joke, but I've seen alcohol stoves made from altoids tins...
I meant an entire coffee set up, but I wouldn’t put it past the EDC people to manage that too. They’re a whole other level 😄
In retrospect, would you still prefer your 4Runner over a Toyota Sienna with an additional 3.5" lift kit and AWD for your travels? The Sienna would give you more internal volume. Thoughts? Thanks.
As an occasional traveler, who sometimes like to get into challenging locations, and uses their vehicle for other purposes - yes! If I were a full-timer, I might change my tune.
Cute idea! I'm always trying to come up with ways to increase my living space in my 4Runner. However, being the klutz that I am , I would inevitably kick over the ammo box in the process of trying to make coffee😂 so I'm sticking with my mini kitchen box with the larger flat surface. lol
LOL you gotta do what works best for you!
Necessity is the Mother of Invention! Play with it! Enjoy it! After watching you, I bought my can this morning! Keep up the interesting work. Cheers.
Congrats - have fun with that baby!
Great job. I may have to build this!
holy crap I can't wait to make one of these!
Thank you so much. It it very very cool. I wanted to see how you had done this. I love my morning coffee and see some other potential ideas around it as well. You have some great ideas keep them coming. Thank you again. I am going to try out the cheese over ham, potatoes and pickles next.
Well off to the hardware store.
You’re so very kind - thank you 😊
Whilst I love the idea of using an ammo box (the Stanley lunch pail is almost £100 here in the UK) this seems a lot of unnecessary messing around.
If no work surface is needed, one could just chuck all their gear inside and call it a day
