Band Maid self describes as a hard rock band. Many of the fans, myself included, grew up with rock during the 60's, 70's, &80's. We agree, hard rock. Not metal. That said, they do the whole spectrum of rock. Softer, harder, emotional, acoustic.Check out their instrumental songs for more intense music. Lemmy often emphasized that Motorhead was an extremely loud, fast-playing ROCK band, not a METAL band (although historians have often asserted otherwise). Band Maid has never referred to themselves as a metal band; they have -- on occasion -- referred to themselves as a hard rock band (or, more often, let others refer to them that way). When they came onto the rock scene in Japan in 2013-2014, Show-Ya (and several other lesser-known bands) had already done the initial "paving" for all-female hard rock and metal bands in Japan, and legit metal bands -- like Mary's Blood and Aldious -- were starting to make their reputations. What to do with Band Maid? Promoters, publicists and advertisers decided to "ride the wave" and market them as another up-and-coming all-female metal band (Band Maid was never a party to this ploy). Band Maid integrates elements from many genres (including metal) -- often within one song -- and has several neo-metal and neo-punk numbers. They are hard to categorize; if you need a handle -- with loose applicability -- "hard rock" is as good as any. If they called themselves "metal", there might be some basis for criticism, but they don't and they never have...they can't help how others refer to them. They are what they say that they are, and they are exceptionally good at it.
The Ladies refer to themselves as Hard Rock, although they incorporate multiple genres including metal in their sound. With Band-Maid, you will hear Pop, Pop-Punk, Punk, Jazz, Rhythm & Blues, Classical, Southern Rock, Classic Rock, Grunge, Latin, and many other types of music. All of them melded together into a sound that is uniquely Band-Maid. And no worries about your phone camera. Use what you have, I and others would ask that in the future you consider upgrading your equipment so you can put out better videos. But that is your choice. And Kanami the lead guitarist/primary composer, has a sort of dual personality. Normally she is this shy demure young woman, very quiet and polite. But, put a guitar in her hands and she transforms into the monster you see on stage in this video. We call it her going "Full Mincho". And you can't go wrong with any Band-Maid song. You don't even need to have a MV for it. They do offer most of their discography on their channel under the releases tab sorted into individual playlists. So you can choose to just listen/watch a song that is just the song with a photo, and we would still come to hear your thoughts on it.

One of the things that you might be picking up on when you say it's not hard like Metallica is the guitar tone. Earlier songs had a fatter bigger guitar song, but she's been using a gizmo that cuts out the lower midrange of the guitar, on purpose so you can hear the bass and other guitar better.

Band-Maid play Band-Maid no matter what it is. That said, Lovebites have some tracks that don't necessarily sound heavy, thrash, speed or symphonic metal. Try swan song from daughters of the dawn live. Now they have a new bassist (more versatile according to a Lovebites fan) their sound may change a bit. What I can't stand is the lead vocalist's voice. She has undeniable amazing voice, a bit like Floor Jansen that I also can't stand.
If you like Maneskin and now Band-Maid, the logical connection is to check out the Korean all-female band Rolling Quartz and their cover of Maneskin's Zitti e Buoni*. They even do it in Italian - I'll let you be the judge - and, like Band-Maid, they are outstanding musicians and performers.
