    I'm sorry to be so long winded, but I want to mention one more thing: After a few field strippings for cleaning, that little pin will just fall out without punching it out when you move the slide back slightly. So, field stripping it is very quick and easy. Just push the little cover down, turn the pistol over and shake it just a little and the pin will just fall out. Just don't forget to push the little cover back up when you reassemble the pistol.

    I tried to get mine to run for 2 years. Never could get thru a 50 round box without 3 or 4 failures to feed, just like you experienced in your first mag. It would just lock back in the middle of a full magazine or sometimes it would be in battery but had not picked up the next round, either way I just tapped, racked and banged and all was good. I never had confidence. Ruger mailed me new magazines and that didn't solve the problem. Finally last month after 2 years and 7 or 8 hundreds rounds I sent it back to Ruger. I got it back about 10 days later, they had replaced the extractor, extractor plunger, and extractor spring. I had my doubts but went to the range 2 days ago and put 200 rounds thru the gun of all types, brands and weights. I fired a 5 shot group at 7, 10, 15 and 25 yards I then began trying to make it fail by fast firing mag after mag, I had left the gun dirty from Ruger again to put it thru the worst case scenario. This thing was perfect for 200 rounds of abuse and dirty firing. So I guess it's good to go now. This is really a nice carry gun. It's light, thin, is very accurate and doesn't behave like most mouse guns on the range. From the day I handled it I wanted it to work. I will make one more range trip and fire a few hundred more and then it will replace the kel-tec p32 I have carried in an ankle holster for nearly 2 decades.

    I experienced a few hang ups initially on my LC9s same as you. All within the first few hundred rounds. Called Ruger support, which is excellent to deal with and they examined my extractor, which looked fine. I can attribute it to two things. Due to the small grip and sharp recoil for a 9mm, you need to hang on a bit more than the Shield, which I've also shot. Definitely less perceived snap on the Shield. Also, there seemed to be a break in on my gun. I have not experienced any failures in over 1,000 rounds, so it sorted itself out happily. I believe it needs a break in like a lot of pistols. Mine needed no servicing anyway.

  • @whodey59
    @whodey59 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Best 9mm CCW in my opinion. Best trigger, small, smooth rounded lines unlike a Block 43. I have shot 880+ rounds through mine without one FTF. But I never shot Herters ammo or used Italian made magazines. And for what the LC9sPro costs compared to a Glock 43, take the difference and buy a few extra magazines. I don't see what's the big deal?

    I just picked my Ruger Lc9 s pro today, and being short of time,didn't break it down and quick lubed it,like I normally do. went to the range straight out of the box, shot 50 rounds of American Eagle, 50 of Winchester white box, 4 Hornady critical defense,and 4 Federal HS. (only had the the 4 n 4 in my bag) Not a hiccup at all...shot great, will need to get used to the longer trigger travel n the longer break. My edc is a Walther PPS, n g26.......had been looking for a summer edc, hence the purchase of the lc 9 s.....it is an accurate little shooter....time will tell, if it will work into my rotation of edc's......I do like it....the size is great and weight is great......like it much better than the cw9 I used to own, and somewhat better than a shield...do recomend it......enjoyed the video...Justin

    I own the LC9S Pro, and mine broke two strikers, and on the second time I sent the pistol back to Ruger, they just replaced the entire slide, striker and all. I haven't had any problems since. I bought the extended mag for mine and the pistol now holds a total of 10...nine in the mag and one in the chamber. And I have no problem with "printing" under a TShirt. I love the LC9 Pro. I also have the M&P Shield and the Glock 43, which I usually carry and shoot the most. But the Ruger is great.

    • @lqgrxdeb
      @lqgrxdeb 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Daniel Casher Oh, yeah, I don't recall having any failures with my LC9, except those strikers breaking, and Ruger said that it just must have been a flawed slide and they replaced it.

    I picked this gun up not too long ago. I read up on mags before I bough more, and people were saying they FTF issues with Made in Italy mags. Another FTF issue was polishing the barrel. I picked up 2 USA OEM mags on eBay. They shipped in 3 days. I have had zero FTF issues through about 200 rounds. The seller on eBay is "freightsale".

    I like the trigger on this pistol, but I bet you already guessed that one right? I vote that all pistol manufacturers need to sell their pistols with 3 magazines. If it is $30 to $40 more so be it. It can be a pain to hunt down more pistol magazines. That is just my thinking, but I bet lots of handgun buyers would agree. :} Keep up the Great Work!

    Justin,My 2 cents' worth: The magazine origin can be either USA or Italy. I have Ruger's LCP Custom (a nice ankle back-up and try to find one now), a Ruger LC9s Pro and extra mags for each. Some people argue that the Italian makes are better and vice-versa. I think whichever you get depends on the seller's source, and the performance is mainly upon the user. All mag packs are labeled Ruger originals, so Ruger may have contracted their production around town. I have no problems at all with any of them, and with several different .380 and 9mm loads. These two Rugers are the best. Triggers are excellent. My Sig P938 BRG is very good, but it can introduce a 1911 cock and lock frame of mind, or need to flip safeties.... These Rugers depend on intent to fire with no flipping switches.Tks for the great video.

    It's not so easy to find a LC9S Pro new anymore. I found one online and bought it. Cost me $330. I feel I over paid for it, but I wanted it. I could have found one used for $250, but I don't like buying used guns. You never know how many thousands of rounds went through one. So I get my pistol and guess what ? It's defective. The magazine release gets stuck and you have to play with it to release the magazine. I had not even fired it. Makes me think that it got passed over by many due to this, and because I didn't get to see it until after I bought it, it was my problem. Probably why it was still available. Ruger was pretty nice about it, sending me a Fedex person to pick it up and send it back. It took about 2 weeks. The repair note stated that they replaced the release spring. My question to them was how could they have sent this out from the factory like this ? What kind of quality control do they have ? And they noted that they shot the pistol 21 times to test it. And guess what ? They never cleaned it after they fired it. That was not right. After not having the pistol for 2 weeks and having to be home all day for 2 days to sign for the pistol, now I had to start cleaning it. But I do love the pistol.

    Got mine just recently, and was disappointed to find only one magazine. A quick ebay search netted two Ruger factory mags (Italian-made) for around $34 each. A Blade Tech IWB holster, and I'm ready to go! Being an old S&W wheel-gunner, I'm very please with this little Ruger.

  • @UncaBill1
    @UncaBill1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Justin, as far as a sore finger: You may have my problem with this and other pistols, that upon firing your trigger finger flesh gets caught UNDER the bottom of the trigger and against the trigger guard. It pinches as you release. I have "modified" the profile of the trigger bottom to allow for loose flesh to not get caught. It works. Try to slowly see what part of your finger is being compressed and caught, then smooth off or round off the bottom point of the trigger. If all fails, get a new one, HA!

    I had a problem with a magazine failing to feed the last cartridge. I had bought it from the dealer as the same time as the gun. The magazine was marked on the package as Ruger LC9, but was not manufactured by Ruger. I had the same issue with a Taurus PT22. I pay the extra for the manufacturers mags.

  • @ohyousooners
    @ohyousooners 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    My EC9s does that same failure to feed, but only with 147gr. HST. The bullet just sticks on the feed ramp. So far, all else runs fine. For defensive purposes, I'm running 124gr. Gold Dots.

  • @miserylovesshotguns
    @miserylovesshotguns 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had some "failures to feed" with mine as well but they weren't the gun's fault, it was me. I use a high grip and I kept pushing the slide stop up in the middle of magazines. If you drop the magazine and it stays open, it's you, not the gun. I took the fire control group out and removed the exterior piece of the slide stop. It still locks open on empty magazines but I can't lock it open manually. Fine with me because now I can grip it how I want and haven't had a "malfunction" since. I always slingshot it when I reload anyway.

    Chances of not having a magazine disconnect in your favor are the same as accidentally gun fire due to no safe. Great review BTW.

    @armedandfeminine-gunchanne5587 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Another fantastic review! No second mag?!? Boooooo! I love Rugers, and I gravitate toward my SR9c as a carry pistol. They do have a very light trigger which is why I'm surprised at them keeping it so light with no thumb safe. I understand why folks have asked for one without the thumb safe, but personally, I'd feel better if the trigger were longer and heavier in that condition.

    • @JustinOpinionChannel
      @JustinOpinionChannel  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Armed and Feminine Agree. I think the long pull helps compensate and prevent N.D.'s but I would personally caution a newcomer about it. Certainly not a trigger you want to snag while re-holstering!!

    • @armedandfeminine-gunchanne5587
      @armedandfeminine-gunchanne5587 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, exactly! That's the danger of a short trigger and no safe. Glock triggers work better with no thumb safe as they are heavier. I would feel remiss if I recommended that to a brand new shooter. Takes some real practice and experience to carry a firearm with a light pull and no external safe.

    • @sycamorebacker1
      @sycamorebacker1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Armed and Feminine Some guy locally fired his Glock in a pharmacy the other day when he scratched his leg. Obviously, it was not holstered, but to me it's scary that it can go off that easily.
      Screw that trigger safety. It's just a gimmick and some people fall for it.

    • @Fudmottin
      @Fudmottin 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a safety in name only. The Glock and the Ruger in this video are SAO as far as I'm concerned. They are not true double action. You have to cock the stricker with a bit of slide rack. Pull the trigger and they go bang. I know it is not fashionable to have proper safeties on CC guns. Sometimes though, they are a good idea.

    Noticed your FTF's when shooting two-handed. That might require having to send it back to Ruger. I've also had FTF's but only when shooting one-handed with my right hand, which is my weak side. For now I'm attributing it to me limp wristing. If I shoot with both hands either side, or if I shoot left hand only, I've yet to experience FTF's. 300 rounds through my Pro and so far those right hand only FTF's have been my only issue. I do have Talon grips coming so I'll be able to see if my weak hand issue is cured that way. Still, very happy with the Pro. Love it's accuracy and trigger, as well as size+weight for carry.

  • @ShellShock794
    @ShellShock794 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I love my Lc9s Pro, I grabbed a second mag (OEM) just at the shop when I bought the gun. The only issue I've ran into after around 200-300 rounds is the slide lock/release switch is right where I rest my thumb so depending where I position it, the slide either doesn't lock open or it locks open in the middle of a mag.
    Not too big of an issue if it doesn't lock open at the end but a pretty big problem if it locks open midway through. Just something I have to get used to and is completely on me as the user, not the firearm

    • @JustinOpinionChannel
      @JustinOpinionChannel  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +ShellShock794 Same issue I have - see my follow up video. I agree and disagree with you. Yes, the problem is caused by US having our thumb near the control - but, the root problem is that the control is located right where most shooters will have their thumbs.

  • @Fudmottin
    @Fudmottin 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    👍 I have this pistol. Your last 8 were better than any group I shot from it at seven yards. I also had a few bobbles. The feed failures were much more minor and a simple tap on the back of the slide got the pistol into battery. However, I've had a few failures where the nose of the round popped up through the ejection port. I have no idea what that's about. I had to pull the magazine to clear those. Perhaps there is a better way. I was comparing the LC9s Pro next to the G43 and the trigger just won me over. The extra round of capacity didn't hurt either. I also found the recoil a bit snappy. Going out of class, the Sig Sauer P938 has much better recoil control in a lighter pistol. However, it is a 1911 style battery of arms with "cocked and locked" being the way to carry. I prefer the Sig to the Ruger. A lot of this is probably due to my first carry sidearm being a Colt 1911. That said, I like the Ruger as well, although I wouldn't pocket carry it due to the light trigger. I installed Talon grips and Ameriglo TFO sights. The sights don't blend in to the nice curves of the Ruger. However, they stand out in my vision a lot better. I think Ruger did a good job with this gun. BTW, Sig is also guilty of shipping just one magazine (at least with most of their SKUs) and those suckers cost a fortune.

    Great review. I am looking at getting one of these pistols to replace my 100% reliable SCCY CPX2. I am only replacing it due to the very different feel to the trigger from any other pistol I have. It is light and smooth enough. But the reset is nearly 1". The LC9s Pro looks to be about half of that.

      Trigger in this video broke an ounce shy of 5 lbs. (Others I've seen break closer to 5.5 lbs, which I think is the design pull.) In addition to internal safeties, it also has long take-up and long reset. It's not too light for carry - even without a thumb safety.

    Just me maybe, but I am not a fan of a striker fired pistol with no thumb safety.
    I will stick with my LC9s with the safety.
    I hope that some day there will be a SA/DA striker fired pistol for CC. I would but several of them.

    I would defintely send that back to Ruger. The fact that the rounds are flying over your left shoulder seems pretty dangerous. Having to turn your back to the threat during a fight in order to engage the target doesn't seem very smart, though with your aim it would look pretty sweet and I bet any of the homies watching would run.

    As always a nice review. I have the LC9. Easy to conceal but long trigger it is not the best carry gun. I considered installing the Galloway trigger. I'm not a good mechanic so with the shipping, labor, and parts I think a better option is to sell the LC9 and purchase a new LC9S.
    Are you still have FTF issues? Were you able to figure out the cause?

    What's weird is I actually stopped this video at the 19 minute point and then had to have a think. I am in the market for something like this however the need of a special tool just to break it down made it a show-stopper. Which probably means...S&W Shield as the alternate. Then I thought: remember those little S&W, flat, tools that you could use on their adjustable sights that fit nicely on your keyring? What if Ruger had a little nifty tool to assist in breaking down the LC9 that could go on your keyring? Are there other dual-use tools that fit on a keyring? Thoughts? Great video as always. New subscriber.

      +Eric Palmer Thanks for the thoughtful comment. I'm sure you could put a small tool on a key ring - and you may already have something like it. It's just a small punch - literally a paper clip will do it. But yes, it is always a consideration when a tool is required for dis-assembly. Thanks for the sub! Much appreciated!

    Thanks for such a thorough review of this gun.
    I like a light trigger when I am shooting at targets but this is not a target gun.
    I once bought a Walther PPQ for home defense but found the trigger too light for that purpose. My concern was over how I would perform with it under duress in my home.
    Does the trigger have much travel?
    Do you feel that the trigger is too light for a self defense handgun?

    • @JustinOpinionChannel
      @JustinOpinionChannel  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ronald Morton Thanks for commenting. I'll be re-visiting this gun soon - probably in a series of comparisons of single-stack 9's. That is certainly a consideration. The trigger travel is fairly long, but very light and crisp. I actually edited out some of the video where I talk about it maybe being too light for new CCW holders (I thought it was too preachy), but I promise to bring it up again.

    I have an lc9s and I have put 100 rounds through it. I had the slide stay open and didn't feed the next round, just like what happen to you. It only happen to me once. The reason is we are hitting the slide stop with our thumb during recoil. We don't even realize it at the time we are doing it. This pistol is one of the smallest, LIGHTEST (17 ounces) around. People with big hands like you and me have a tendency to hit the slide stop. Put a 100 rounds through it with one hand and I'll bet you it never happens!!! One handed your thumb doesn't get close to the slide stop. 2 handed its right under it!!!

      @JustinOpinionChannel  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Paul Obrien BINGO. See my more recent follow-up video on just that topic. It nagged me and I wondered if that was the problem, so I tested it out on camera. Last thing I want to do is to imply there is a problem with a product if it is me instead. That said - if you are likely to cause a stoppage due to shooting grip or style, it might not be the gun for you! Thanks for your post - appreciate it.

    Great vid and review... seems to be a very accurate little pistol. I am not sure it is for me as I have very large hands and I have trouble controlling a gun that I can only get a 2 fingered grip on, but I can see how it would make a good back up gun. The failures to feed worry me a little bit but I think it is due more to the small grip...as in induced "limp wristing" more than a design flaw in the gun. keep the vids coming!

    • @JustinOpinionChannel
      @JustinOpinionChannel  9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I personally don't like how it had feeding issues within the first 50 rounds, doesn't give me a sense of comfort no matter how smooth the trigger is. Also, the fact it only comes with '1' mag, that's a total NO-NO!

      +Rene G. Solis I'm still getting early slide-locks, but I need to try and determine if it is user induced. I don't *think* I'm riding the slide stop, but can't swear to it yet... don't want to blame the pistol if I'm inducing the failure.

    • @JustinOpinionChannel
      @JustinOpinionChannel  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Perry Hughes Herter’s Ammo is basically a Cabela’s House Brand made for them by CBC through Sellier & Bellot. I've shot it for years. At first, like many, I was drawn to the low price of the ammo and figured it'd be "good enough" for range play. Over time, I have become quite convinced that the quality and consistency of the ammo is as good as most "brand name" stuff out there. The brass casings are particularly good quality (S&B headstamp) and will reload many, many times. I always try to keep a case or more on hand.

    I ordered a 2 pack of 7 round mags plus a 9 round mag from gunmagwarehouse.com. They shipped from Florida to Massachusetts in less than 2 weeks. I thought it was pretty cheap of Ruger to only provide 1 mag with the gun. My Springfield XDS shipped with 1 seven round mag and 3 eight round mags. I ordered the 9 round mag direct from Springfield's headquarters in Illinois. Personally I think you should not have less than 4 mags for each of your semi auto guns.

    Just wanted to let all of you know how bad Ruger service department has become and how little they give a damn about their customers.
    I purchased a LC9s pro last April and despite the fact there have been way less than 500 115 grain non +p rounds fired through it the gun has broken down twice. The first time the slide broke and the gun couldn't be racked and the second time the firing pin broke. Between the first and second times that the gun failed there were absolutely no live rounds fired through it, NONE. All that it was used for was shooting a SureStrike Laser Training Cartridge at a LASER target. In other words none of the shock, stress or vibrations from firing live ammo and the firearm broke down for the second time in seven months.
    First their technician told me that I must be doing something wrong then he tried to blame the LASER cartridge despite the fact that there are many thousands of them in use around the world.
    I have been in contact with Ruger and told them that although the odds are 100 to 1 that this weapon will ever be needed to defend myself should the situation arise I want a gun that I can count on to work and I'm sorry to say that I no longer have that kind of faith and trust in this one and would like a replacement but their reply is that no matter what has happened with this gun in the past if it can be fixed that's what they'll do and refused to replace it.
    I'm a disabled veteran living on a small fixed income and can't afford to replace this firearm but due to the fact that I have no confidence in this gun working when I need it I wouldn't even sell it to somebody and am turning it into the sheriff's Department to be destroyed and will just have to somehow come up with the money to buy a used replacement for this seven month old pistol.
    Thank you Ruger!
