I think this crew is the reason Joshua Redman does most of his work in non traditional formats: organ/Trio/duo/double bass-drum ensembles. This group was on such a high level that it cant be replicated.
happy to that the jazzzzzz is not dead joshua tu dechires grave !!!!!! des sax comme toi je croyais que le moule etait cassée fantastique une merveille
Wow, Mehldau is already one of my favorite jazz players, and the clip is even better with that drum solo. One of the few drum solos I've heard that actually fit the essence of the piece!
Brother Blade brought tears to my eyes; not so much his natural ability to hold all that...but his tone is just so gut-renching, akind to a hum or a whistle...
man these guys are jamming harder than diamonds. Love how the bassist takes over in some quiet areas. finally one of the few taped musical performances on youtube that are actually a quality digital reproduction -___-
I find it a bit humorous how fast Josh walked up to the mic to play the head after Brian finished his solo. I laugh a little to myself. Great performance from each player, just mind blowing. I really miss Joshua's tone on his metal Otto Link though. He should play it again!
I had never heard him play blazing fast hard bop like this before. I had been somewhat skeptical that his style would work for tempos like this.... but as usual, BB does not disappoint!
If I was a pianist and someone told me I sounded like Bill Evans, I would take that as a compliment. Sadly, I'm a bassist, but It made my life when my bass instructor looked me in the face and told me that my solos reminded him of Scott LaFaro, Red Mitchell, and George Mraz.
The problem is that Brad never felt there was much Bill Evans in his playing. Tyner, Hancock, Wynton Kelly, and some Monk? Sure, but not so much Bill, especially in the playing here.
The think about this actual musicians is that they learn about all that great musicians, if your are a pianist you have to study Monk, Art Tatum, Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea and so on and you choose your musical influencers but you know about all this great musicians and their technique
People who tell him he sounds likeBill Evans don't listen to him. They watch his skin and see he's white. Racists. When I first heard him my first thought was, this classically trained guy must have loved Wynton Kellyas a kid. And that's pretty much what he is.
@@076657 I think Brad sounds alot like Evans on his first trio album. And I do think its a ethnicity thing. White people are very reflective and prone to depression, there's clear differences between the "races". It's something that sould be marveled not ignored and Jazz is the perfect example of whats possible when two differnt groups of people approch a problem with complete empathy and democracy. A truly American thing indeed and its fucking beautiful
Wow, Mehldau and Brian Blade were both 24, Redman was 25 and McBride was 22. These guys were so young, it's crazy!

Rumor has it that Brad was locked in a cage for the night after this show.
Seriously though, Brad is a maniac here :O
lmfao
i can believe it !!
Brad Meldau in his youth, already a master of improvisation & his own pianism.
Joshua Redman- 25
Brad Mehldau- 24
Brian Blade- 24
Christian McBride- 22
Amazing that they were this good at such young ages.
Fuck me.

Brother Blade brought tears to my eyes; not so much his natural ability to hold all that...but his tone is just so gut-renching, akind to a hum or a whistle...

Is it just me or in this video from 1994 Brian Blade looks older than now?
Every time I see him again he looks younger. I think its the 90s square shoulders on the jacket
I think the same, Brian Blade has a covenant with the Devil... That explains a lot...
Lol
I mean this as no insult to Christian McBride, who might be the best bassist of his generation, but Mehldau and Blade are geniuses.
Great solo. I cannot say more.
Braaaaaaaaad!!! Incredible
Brian Blade oh mannnn no words!
I had never heard him play blazing fast hard bop like this before. I had been somewhat skeptical that his style would work for tempos like this.... but as usual, BB does not disappoint!
Kiyoto Burke hell yea dude!

If Mehldau bleached his hair he could have probably snagged a part in "The Real Slim Shady" video.

That's what I'm saying! I loved his sound when he was on that metal link!
