I love this game. Great acting, great story, great gameplay. And the fact that it's a throwback to old noir films just makes it so much better. A nice change of pace compared to all the other copy and paste first person shooters...
After watching this I'd say that Fontaine is the primary antagonist of the entire game because he's behind the morphine and the house fires which are the biggest plots in the game
When Phelps lost it, pulled his 45 to Roy, and made that speech, i knew that cutscene was the most human and emotional cutscene ever made in a videogame.
Even better: Phelps was speaking in defense of the deceased Courtney Sheldon. Keep in mind, him and Phelps do not exactly get along. This was the man who constantly challenged Phelps' authority, shot him in the back, and was responsible for the morphine heist (and in turn, kind of responsible for Phelps' own downfall in the police force), and yet Phelps defended his honor after Earle slandered him.
I'm actually the opposite. While i like the collectible plot i find the cases more enjoyable especially the traffic case where much of the crime are not part of any big conspiracy although i also like ad Vice crime because it give you a front seat on the corruption
I see it a bit like a TV show which has standalone episodes with a wider arc that gets built up over time. It's also kind of fitting for a detective game to make you investigate to fully understand the whole story.
Courtney is a guy who thinks he's is smarter than he really is, also being very naive. First he makes risky and not throughout thought move lead by emotions, then he wants other to help with consiquences of his decisions and actions.
+Johan Karlsson The guy you arrest in the quarter moon murders case is the black dahlia killer, you dont get to see the black dahlia corpse, but you catch the guy who does it
Great analysis! Cole's ambition was a big part of what drove him to be a proper policeman though, (unlike the lazy Stefan, the alcoholic Rusty, the corrupt Roy, and the unmotivated Biggs); he may've been a self-serving man but his actions ultimately did some good. And I wouldn't call Courtney Sheldon a badass; he had good intentions but was a dumbass for stealing morphine, trusting such a blatantly-creepy professor, getting involved with gangsters, then begging Kelso to help clean up his mess.
1:06:45 One of my favorite scenes, personally. Because: 1.) Like Roy said, Cole finally lost it. Which I felt needed to happen at some point because Cole takes pretty much everything else in stride. 2.) Roy's a dick and deserved a gun to his head, maybe even a shot.
"Courtney Sheldon was a Corpsman, Roy. He served his country. He went out with a medical kit and an Army .45 into places that make the Valley of Death look like picnic. He was either naive enough or dumb enough to get involved with the Suburban Redevelopment Fund, along with the mayor, the DA, Munroe, and a certain crooked cop. He was involved in the morphine heist, but he has a puncture wound in his jugular, which makes this a murder case. He was better man than you'll ever know. You say one more word about him, and I WILL BLOW YOUR FUCKING HEAD OFF!"
I know this is 7 years old but Fontaine was working with Monroe by getting his mentally unstable patients to burn down the houses of people that wouldn't sell their land to Monroe
DR Fontane !! Also the voice of OLD MiCAH BeLL from rdr2!!! Peter Blomquist is perfect for such roles, I hope he plays an antagonist/a Trevor like character in GTA 6!
Roy is just a selfish bully, he would never go against anyone bigger than him. I like his perfomance, what an entertaining dick he is but I have to admit that among other partners he is the worst.
He's a badass? The whole point of his character was that he's all self righteous in theory but a coward and a piece of shit when it really counts.....like cheating on his wife and burning all those innocent people alive during the war. That's why the guys who really knew him during his service hated his guts He never really wanted to get his hands dirty, just get ahead at the expense of everyone else. Brilliant anti Hero character, but you seemed to have missed the point.
guys... play the original game, then look at Cole's flashbacks, Then watch this video... watching this story unfold in this order will prove so damn satisfying...
@@applescruff1969 that was Ira from the war he burnt that house idk why but Harlan Fontaine told him to or something and told him the house would be empty for but it wasn't and he got even more traumatized like in the war.
I just found the "You said the house would be empty" newspaper at the third playthrough. It's spine-chlling, Fountaine is a monster
It worst when cole is demoted to arson and being at the crime scenes
Fontaine's voice actor is Micah Bell's voice actor from RDR 2(and also Motion Capture too)
Hmmm interesting.
Damn
such a great actor
Seems like a nice guy in interviews, but in games not so much
well I'll be damned... nice to know, he can really make briliantly that strong dixie accent
Aaron Staton is so underrated as an actor. He needs to be in more stuff, not just crime dramas.
He is in narcos
I love this game. Great acting, great story, great gameplay. And the fact that it's a throwback to old noir films just makes it so much better. A nice change of pace compared to all the other copy and paste first person shooters...
the game is good but the shooting feels stiff but i dont really care since its not about that
7:50
For those curious, $50,000 is equal to roughly $678,000 in today's currency.
Servebotfrank well god damn, that really puts it in perspective
24:00 - 24:45 The best piece of acting in gaming history, gives me the shivers every time.
This game was so good storywise, so good.
Agreed!
Yeah
Considering Roy is such a raging dick, I'm surprised no one else pointed their guns at him!
I was so hoping that Cole would shoot that piece of shit. I mean, until his gun went click!!
It's more powerful when you consider how Phelps and Sheldon left off after the cave flashback.
After watching this I'd say that Fontaine is the primary antagonist of the entire game because he's behind the morphine and the house fires which are the biggest plots in the game
Agreed, and one of the few villains who actually face some kind of justice.
Yep, and he really steals the show whenever he's around. It's a shame that he had to die before Cole or Kelso could even get to him.
I have never ever heard a more spot-on accent for a villain. I would love to hear the guy do this voice again somewhere.
He's in red dead redemption 2
Lol it’s hard for me to imagine Micah talking in a more sophisticated southern accent.
Leland: Don't worry i''ll take care of Jack Kelso.
2 hours later...

I love this part of the game the most, because you actually see the MAIN PLOT whereas the cases themselves are only minor subplots.
it feels weird the main plot of the game is buried in collectables while the main missions were actually sub plots
That is a very shrewd observation, and I actually really appreciate that narrative technique; it makes the story as a whole more interesting.
I'm actually the opposite. While i like the collectible plot i find the cases more enjoyable especially the traffic case where much of the crime are not part of any big conspiracy although i also like ad Vice crime because it give you a front seat on the corruption

FlymanMS i can understand why he sold the morphine to the mob but him thinking they werent going to cash in on it was beyond dumb
While I agree with the fact that he is naive, he doesn’t ever state that he is smart
Fontaine is the one who should see a doctor
Just like most Psychiatrists, he's mad himself.
Probably the most evil bastard in the game. Yes, maybe even more evil than that Black Dahlia freak
@@markofcain2324 At least The Black Dahlia didn't prolong their suffering.

that moment, when you realise that cole actually dies in the end :/
Dr Fontaine actually inspired me to look into psychology lol.
All Seeing Crow lmao
All Seeing Crow do you kill your patients 2?
Dr. Fontaine is the archetypal psychopath. There exists no better example in fiction that I'm aware of.
@@KurtisC93 Harlan Fontaine fits the trope "Psycho Psychologist" to the T: A brilliant psychiatrist....who is also a high functioning sociopath.

Yeah, I know, I just played through the game again. Feel stupid now. In my defense, though, it has been three years or so since last time. :)
You got even Monroe saying he's a cold character. That says something, doesn't it?

As soon as I saw Fontaine in the first paper I had a bad feeling about it
Why didn't they put an achievements for finding all the newspapers?
You need to find them in order to get 100% completion, there's an achievement for that.
Brett Colbert probably because their so easily found
in the same game that gives you 3 achievements for driving cars

glad to see that Peter Blomquist is back as another R* character in RDR2

LOL I've never understand the story behind until I've play the cases.
Why can't they show it after the certain case they featured?
then it wouldn't be so much of a "graphical" game, would it?
MrPathorn because then you wouldn’t have to use your brain to put the parts together
That's what the flashbacks are for in between cases. They build exposition too
This game needs a tv series. Expand the story, characters, cases. I can definitely see at least 4 seasons.
Damn... Micah's looking really clean.
