Hundreds of video games launch annually, each unique in their own right. Yet, so few stand out; fewer still prove groundbreaking enough to leave an indelible mark on the industry. In 2004, the Sydney, Australia-based Team Bondi embarked on a lengthy development journey to craft such an experience. Studio founder Brendan McNamara longed to create a game to rival the likes of Rockstar Games’s Grand Theft Auto franchise. From McNamara’s perspective, producing something so ambitious unfortunately necessitated unmitigated sacrifice.
Team Bondi’s 2011 detective thriller, L.A. Noire, made for an unprecedented piece of art. A Rockstar-published open-world adventure, the game boasted a near-perfect facsimile of 1947 Los Angeles. Thanks to Team Bondi’s sister company, Depth Analysis, the revolutionary technology known as MotionScan populated Los Angeles’s gorgeously recreated digital world with stunningly realistic characters. Players explore said world by assuming the role of Cole Phelps, a former Marine whose investigative prowess sees him quickly climb the LAPD ranks by solving crimes, practically all of which were inspired by period-specific LAPD case files.
The final product remains a seminal part of Rockstar’s catalogue, its critical acclaim and commercial success undoubtedly a result of the game’s meticulous attention to detail. However, even Cole Phelps would’ve struggled to unravel the mysteries behind L.A. Noire’s circuitous development, beset by oppressive working conditions and a litany of other issues that culminated in Team Bondi’s storied demise.

L.A. Noire was a great game, underrated even, but it's shameful that the game's director stooped to poor ethics and alienated his team during development.
If Rockstar had no participation in the making that game would have been trash.

I can think of many many works, but if that fits your wishes we can be conformists and pretend it's the alright for bosses to be like that.
This game isn't great nor is underrated. It was blown out of proportion and overhyped by paid reviews while players were frustrated with a halfbaked final product and unrealistic characters that were advertised as realistic. How things are going in the gaming industry this game will become good since most things released isn't worth for me to even release my fart on it let alone to be bothered to play it even if someone pays me good money to play it. You have to be heavily lobotomized and a masochist to find entertainment values in such ''products'' that are nothing but slapped together tech demos with makeup on.
That's probably what made the game so great.
When you look back. You realise just how far ahead of its time this game really was.
Loved it's setting, music, tone and visuals. Everything else though was terrible imo. Boring and clunky gameplay, classic Rockstar on rails mission design that gets old very fast, bad acting despite the impressive facial technology and the only interesting cases were all the homicides. Bad game that has is seen through rose tinted glasses because of how unique it is.
I don't see Rockstar games ever taking a chance on games like this ever again

Gaming industry working conditions are absolutely horrid, and Rockstar is still one of the worst when it comes to crunch. Thank you for shining a spotlight on this issue that doesn't get enough attention.

That's what happens when any industry gets too much supply of people wanting to do work, and too little demand for them. Severe market over-saturation.
Do correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I've heard about the RDR2 production, most overtime was optional and paid for.
@@negative6442 Eh, optional isn't really necessarily all that optional most of the time though. Even if your job wouldn't be on the line, being the only guy going home at 8 makes you feel a lot of guilt and shame. It's hard to really tell exactly how bad it was on RDR2 because there haven't been too many clear stories about overwork. There are definitely arguments both ways, but even though they pointed out it wasn't necessary to keep your job, that still doesn't mean that Rockstar knew nothing about the mental effects of pushing their team to meet deadlines that couldn't be met in a regular 40 hour work week
@@tHaH4x0r More like it's what happens when you work in an unregulated industry without proper unionization. Supply and demand has nothing to do with it, corporations will always abuse their employees.
Also I'd dig an L.A. Noire 2 set in the 1970's, taking influence from films like The Nice Guys, Taxi Driver, The French Connection, Dog Day Afternoon, and other crime thrillers from or set in that era.

For a story and atmosphere game yes it is memorable. As a detective game, Return of the Obra Dinn set a high bar.

This a classic example of how a single person could pretty much f**k up the work of hundreds of employees and countless man hours. definitely gotta respect those devs that gave us such a masterpiece inspite of the incompetency of the lead director..rip those brave souls

matt I really admire what they tried to do with it, sure it isn’t perfect but nothing that’s the first of its kind is. The atmosphere, music and great actors made me fall in love with this game. Though I definitely understand people not liking it as in some aspects, it feels more like an interactive movie than a game but that could be a negative or positive depending what experience you were hoping for

I so loved this game, I bought it not knowing a thing about it, didn't even notice the R from rockstar on the case... I played it and loved it, everything. The city was so detailed (never been in L.A. (or the U.S.A. lol) but it looked so real... I just though the ending was a bit dull.
As someone who grew up in LA, it was really cool to explore the city 60 years ago and recognize intersections and some buildings
@@jimbo3 - Does it resemble the LA that you remember? I live by Salem, Mass and Assassins Creed 3 and Fallout 4 both buildings that looked almost too real. The Salem Witch museum looked like a exact replica of the real world one only smaller.
@@kummakummakummakummakummac8606 Yeah, it felt believable to me. It felt big and alive. I don't think it was 1:1 scale, but the important buildings like city hall seemed the right size since they loomed large in the back ground without the skyscrapers blocking the view.

@@jimbo3 - Assassins Creed 3& Fallout 4 weren't exact replicas of the city but like you said there was recognizable buildings. It felt weird, and cool, playing a game in a city I've been in thousands of times.

I remember waiting to get this game the day it came out. And the night before, my xbox was having overheating problems. Before then I had never taken it apart and was hesitant to, but I REALLY wanted to play this game. So I took it apart, cleaned it out and got it running again. Bought this the next day and had a blast with it. Really wish there could have been a 2 at some point but completely understand why there never was.
9 years later and these faces and performances are STILL better than 90% of what we see in modern games. 9. years. later. Huge achievement.
Ironic that Rockstar would say Team Bondi made insane decision when they had the exact same problems with Max Payne 3. Oh, and they still gave the stink eye if you left at 7:30.

This might sound crazy but everytime I listen to your voice I get nostalgic and think about when I was a kid and visiting Walt Disney world. Reminds me of those ads I used to watch the day before going in the Hotel room.
La Noir was a great game, it was the first game I played that came in multiple discs, and it was also the first game I played that had the grateful feature of being able to skip mini games/areas that you can't beat. I was also grateful for that in Red Dead I and II. I personally had some trouble with the interrogations, but I loved all the detail and story. I received it with my xbox 360 for my 25th birthday in 2012.

I truly enjoyed paying this game, it was a fresh and unique experience, not without its flaws though as it wasn't a particulary exceptional shooter or driving game, animations were a little bit clunky but nothing that would distract you, it wasn't a true open world either but the mixture of different gameplay mechanics plus an engaging story and the crime scene investigation with interrogations made it really hard to put the controller down.
When this game dropped, I thought it would change the industry in terms of where the bar would be set for facial animation just as Metal Gear Solid raised the bar in terms of voice acting and cinematic cutscene story telling. Still I wonder how they could develop this technology to capture their performance and look seemingly flawless in game and it not be picked up by other game developers looking to capture that same level of fidelity.
You deserve more than a million subs, I love the channel, keep it up

Horrible crunch culture in 2010. Still hasn't changed until this day
It's been Rockstar's business model for a long time. From what I understand, back in the day, it was rare for companies to work multiple major projects at the same time, or work on one immediately after a previous one was completed. Rockstar took the world by storm releasing the original GTA trilogy, Max Payne 2, the Manhunt games, Smuggler's Run, Red Dead Revolver, and Midnight Club all within a span of 2000-06... it was unprecedented. I think it lead to a lot of companies copying the same model and leading to rushed releases, patch on release day, and so on.

Still one of my favorite games of the previous generations, the other being Alan Wake. It's sad we don't see games like this anymore. The market is over saturated with battle royale, fps shooters and sports games.
Arguably, this game revolutionized facial motion capture for future Rockstar games that were set to come.

Me too. I think The Getaway was a really significant landmark game, and excellent to play - unlike L.A. Noire which is merely 'good'.
Sorry to hear it had unethical issues behind the scenes, typical case of higher ups taking shortcuts to save money. This is one of my favorite video games of all time. I don't have any real interest in getting the latest game consoles, I'm happy with my 360 so I can play this once or twice a year from start to finish in a 3 to 5 day setting. It just had so much creative tone to it!!!
