Okay, to explain the individual storylines as quickly as possible:
Minji: Basically the guy is a player. She thought he liked her, cause he wrote on her arm and was all flirty with her, but then she saw him full of writings from other girls.
Danielle & Haerin: They were two-timed by the basketball dude. Later on they found out about it and decided to put their "friendship" first.
Hyein: She was interested in the guy, cause she found him interesting and different from the other guys...but then he started acting weirdly with the emojis he sent her and then she saw him mocking their choreo, which is also why the text said smth like "That's not our dance!!!".
Hanni: Her partner is basically the only one, who didn't negatively surprise her. Ofc she was shocked to find out, that the dancer wasn't a guy, but she wasn't feeling bad about it.

the gist of this is that they are hyping up boys in their minds then later on discovers that their "hypeboy" is not what they think they would actually be like in personality, appearance or attitude wise.

This album is basically a classic high school love story which is a really good concept for them since this is what we need at the moment, a refreshing sounds and concept and its really impressive that they were able to express this freshness thru their voice as a rookie and a rare thing for a newly debuted 4th gen group. A lot of people are talking about cookies because of the lyric but the song is really catchy and easy to listen to. This is like a break for the industry to step back and enjoy more of a chilling and vibin to the music rather than streaming a explosive 808 kpop song, and the fact that they still rocking the chart and breaking records with this album in where most 4th gen group debut with more of a hype and main stream genre of music is really..REALLY impressive. Glad you liked this debut and album :)

    • @badsnowman
      @badsnowman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

yeah, it's honestly just a problem of the people who interpreted it that way, they saw in an american movie or sth cookie being used to describe sth dirty and now 2 seconds after they saw the lyrics they assumed it's the same stuff, the lyrics clearly don't describe sth sexual but i guess if you have a dirty mind it can be interpreted that way, i do applaud the effort of the production team, i'd do the same if i was them, put some almost "controversial" lyrics in there just to see people argue about them for months and try to figure out what it really means, it's very smart from them, there's no such thing as bad publicity right? :))

my interpretation of hype boy was its about them hyping up the crush in their head but at the party they find out something was different/unexpected? like
minji- she thought he liked her back since he wrote on her hand but then realised other ppl wrote all over him, and he was just being friendly
danielle&haerin- danielle sees the boy she likes giving haerin a lollipop so its a bit of a rivalry at first, but then they compare texts and realise he's two timing them, so they get revenge by taking his stuff from the locker room, in the end they just choose friendship instead bc they dont need him
hyein- she liked him and thought he was all shy and cute but then at the party she saw him and his friends mocking and making fun of their dance moves, so she got angry
hanni- hype boy was a hype girl? or nb or trans either way that was the twist, probs the only really happy one lol

As a Korean native speaker and an English nonnative speaker, I think this is not just a cultural difference. It is true that there is no innuendo in Korean lyrics and the word cookie and Koreans do not fully understand what is implied by the English phrases mixed in the lyrics. But I also see the English translation implies more than in the original Korean lyrics. So I suspect it was intended somehow. I don’t know if it was the English translator, the producer, or the CEO. What I don’t understand is why. They would have known how English speakers would respond to this. To make noise to get attention for this new group? Or there was something wrong in their chain of decision making? Probably. I hope they have learned a lesson and will not make this kind of mistake. Anyway, they have enormous talents and I love them. They will make a big success as a 4th gen.

God bless you. What you say here 47:22 is spot on. Sometimes it seems like people are forgetting that those who produce these young groups are people that worked in this industry for decades. They know k-pop is a global phenomenon, and they cater to an international audience. They know what they are doing. They are aware that lyrics like this could cause controversy. It's all marketing. As a matter of fact, they make up a story to justify the "original" meaning and let the girls explain it on Instagram. They can make a buzz around the group and reach a larger audience because of the controversy, consequently, they can create a stronger, tight fanbase that feels the need to protect the girls from the "attack" of people that listen to the lyrics and question them. It's all very carefully calculated. People need to understand that calling out lyrics like this IS an act of trying to "protect" these girls and not the opposite. It should be a priority for everyone that likes k-pop to call out companies and producers that use minors inappropriately.

    • @NickaLah
      @NickaLah 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@HungLe-jw2wn Plus, there is a conversation to be had about dog whistles in kpop. I don't know what to believe for sure, but supposedly there are people in the industry that have outright called kpop "healthy pron" even when talking about young girls and out in the open. Keep in mind the age of consent changed from maybe 13 to 20 not that long ago, it'll take more time for them to adjust to it. A blog, kpopalypse, has written about dog whistles in the industry, and although I don't know I agree with everything said, I do believe them when they say IU's song "23" is basically about how exhausted she is from being forced into acting young for her age. I was pretty busy the year that song came out and I didn't pay attention the lyrics very well, but they do hint at her basically being fed up with creepy uncles.... kinda of forced into doing certain things to keep their attention, primarily coming across as very young.
I do think the blog talking about another group maybe was overanalzying it, such as saying certain things like too much makeup or the right shade of lipstick to mimic the color of privates are to attract certain kinds of people. In reality, regardless of age, girls just want to be pretty and it doesn't mean the staff is purposely enticing old men. I also would totally believe that the English lyrics are just a different kind of marketing. The problem is however, what if that's not the case? Regardless even the blog I mentioned made a point of saying that making girls wait until 18 won't solve anything, and could actually make things worse for them since that means more time with alleged creepy CEOs since they're going train from a very young age either way. I'm sure a lot of us have heard about the worst things that can happen to not just girls, but boys, too, in kpop. I just hope it's not as common as it possibly could be, and that somehow things improve. But it's not like even with the metoo movement things have settled in the U.S., either... and I dunno if there's a way to speed up progress.

I am Korean and I use a translator
It has disappeared now, but in the early 2000s, music files were backed up on an empty CD and listened to. At that time, they expressed that they burn CDs in Korea.
The reason is that the CD becomes very hot when the backup is complete.
This means that New Jeans cannot reject the cookies (CDs) we made.
In the music video, the cookie turns into a CD, and the cookie that was rolled first rolls back to the CD is the most symbolic. It means taste their musicality.

    just to clear things up
cookie is actually a fansong about baking cds for fans but instead represented as cookie hence the lyrics "living in your mind rent free" because of how good their songs are and the line about cavity is our problem represents that we've consumed so much of their music/cookies that were addicted and they dont care that were getting cavities or going insane for it. the reason why people say its a mistranslation is that knetz dont think of anything because "baking cds" is actually something they usually say and is a known metaphor and im pretty sure cookie isnt also an innuendo for ykw in korea. its more of a cultural difference thing than a mistranslation because some of the questionable lines is in english. the ones who wrote the lyrics were ppl who speak english from what i know so most likely they either heard about the baking cds thing in korea and went with it or maybe the topic was given by staff in ador/hybe but we'll prob never know. tbh if they replaced cookie with sumn else like a cake or cupcake or any other circlular baked goods this controversy wouldve never happened. i still think ador/hybe couldve thought it through a little more before releasing this cause yes it is okay for korean audiences but more on the questionable side when it comes to the international audiences. like i feel like they couldve kept the cookie as the cd but changed the other lyrics that would further hint at the cookie being a cd like putting lyrics suggesting to take a listen or anything music related
besides that i absolutely love the song still! i personally didnt think about the innuendos (probably because i was so focused on their heavenly vocals omg) for the first few listens but after seeing the comments and stuff about it i started noticing it. i honestly now just think that its a song about getting addicted to cookies cause i absolutely love cookies so saves me some trouble... 😂

I don't get why everyone is so fixated on the lyrics for Cookie tho.. It's obvious from the MV that the "cookie" is literally the CD i.e. they've prepared their music for their fans as a 'cookie' that once people taste, they won't get enough of. In Korea it's common to hear things like "baking a CD" similar to how in America people say they're "burning a CD" to mean they're making a CD. I thought it was such a cute and brilliant way to introduce that idea. And it seems this is how many Koreans took it too.

Actually I don't get why people take cookie meaning as female sexual part. The song clearly starts like "we make a cookie" which in no angle sounds like female sexual part. How can you make a female sexual part? Am I wrong in this?

My favorite HAS to be Attention. We've had a several comebacks already and there will be A LOT to come, but the "You got me lookin for Attentioooon" in the chorus is LEGIT one of the catchiest things I've heard in a while, you just can't help but sing along to it!
About Cookie, it is true the lyrics come off a bit sus but I don't know, they made a TikTok explaining the lyrics and koreans are also saying it's not translated properly in the song captions and it's actually not what it really seems to be, but yea it makes sense for foreigners to read the lyrics and be thrown off by them. At the end of the day we can't really know unless we get official statements which I highly doubt, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, the industry is rough and the girls are young but as much as it's common, we cant always see the negative side of things and I hope that their company treats them well and let them live their teenage life properly. It also comes to mind that 2 of them have Australian origins and they're fluent in english, so they know what they were singing about as well as they have parents speaking both languages, there is NO way their parents stay silent if the lyrics meant what the translations are showing, but maybe im just delusional.
So far NewJeans has done incredibly good, I've never seen a debut like this and they are really doing it different which is awesome, a breath of fresh air like people has been saying.

Going tbh, I'm pretty cynical about the parents of kids that end up in the industry, there may be far too many that wouldn't do anything about it if there are legit innuendos in a song. Especially true for parents from the west.

22:38 The story of this MV is that a man is proposing to two women. Upon learning of this, the two friends become awkward, but soon reconcile, and then take a small revenge on the man.
29:00 The story of this MV is that he was attracted to a pure and lonely man, but it turned out that he was disappointed to see that he was neither innocent nor lonely, nor did he care about others.

I love that you love the music. The 1st one I saw was 'Attention' mv - such a chill fun vibe and utterly different sound (as you said). I saw a description (that I agree with) that it's very 'casual pre-teen mid-2000's r&b style'. I actually was a preteen in the mid-2000's (born Oct. 1993) who liked (and still likes) casual pop/r&b - so it felt very fresh and freeing.
You made yourself laugh - You made me laugh. Your instant 'ugh' at the end and then starting to laugh set me off (immediately thought 'oh overprotective sibling mode instantly activated') & I had to pause this reaction vid to LITERALLY CACKLE HYSTERICALLY WITH LAUGHTER FOR A GOOD 10 MINUTES! My father came into the living room (I'm using headphones & laptop) & was just standing there staring at me as I laughed. Cackled, unable to breath, & his face setting me off even more before he fled into his room.
I haven't laughed that hard in a LONG time so bless you simply for that. I un-paused the video (after going back a bit) and then freely laughed along as I was watching & enjoying your hysterical laughter and comments. Completely worth the wait!

@@LFNZE Thing is I've heard from plenty of people that they have at least one native English speaker on staff. The other problem is uh... kpop is like, kind of global now right? If the English lyrics are making us really uncomfortable, you know they just have to change the translations? Maybe it would take some time to do it, but they could easily update us that they plan on changing them asap. They obviously don't have to change the song itself, just how it's translated. Pretty sure they can change the subtitles without affecting the video in any way. Also, to most native English speakers the metaphor for "bake a cookie" sounds really weird, and like it was made up as an excuse to write dirty lyrics. Although, I'm well aware now that the metaphor is common there, but a lot of people aren't going to understand it. Not only that, that's not the only line that makes us uncomfortable, there are several lines that are... "concerning". Such as:
      - her cookie "ain't for free" -- could be taken as he needs to work or pay for her... um... "cookie"
      - "no dinner, dinner, you're hungry though... no water, water, you're thirsty though" -- basically the boy is hungry and thirsty for the girls themselves... not a CD. This line especially doesn't make sense to me even when considering the Korean metaphor of baking a CD.
      - 'that's how you like it, ain't that right" -- those kind of words are used in our songs quite often in a sexual way
      - "looking at my cookie, do you ever smell it different?" -- I mean........ that is craaaazy dirty
      - 'I wanna see you taste it" -- uh yeah. Basically asking for oral "activities".
      - "made a little cookie, come and take a lookie" -- yep, still pretty bad, asking the boy to look at her private part.
The worst part in all this that makes me angry is calling native English speakers perverts for very obvious dirty lyrics. I'm fairly conservative when it comes to sexual things, so I could easily miss innuendos. I don't even like really talking about such things as I get older, and here I am with this song stuck in my head (because otherwise it's good and very catchy - you must understand how easily it can get stuck in one's head.) Every time it pops in my head it makes me feel bad :( Cuz then I'm thinking about the old dirty perverts this song can attract and it just reminds me of the horrible things that happen in this world to young girls.
It's not any different than little kids on TH-cam doing innocent things, only to find out that the wrong kind of people watch those videos for totally different reasons. So I don't get defending a company that doesn't even know you while knowing that there are disgusting people that will love the English lyrics just the way they are?? Wouldn't you rather we say, "HEY, bad people are going to enjoy this song for the absolute most disgusting reason, you should probably fix it."?
Although, there's a blog called Kpopalypse that talks about dog whistles in kpop, where it's common to have very innocent things in kpop songs/videos that are meant to attract those kind of people on purpose. I thought maybe they were overanalzying the entire industry... but maybe not, and ya'll are just desensitized to it? To be fair, I may be at this point, too, overall. It's just that in the song Cookie, the innuendos are super obvious, I'd barely call them innuendos they're so obvious.

@@NickaLah Stray Kids used God’s Menu the same way New Jeans uses Cookie, it’s nothing inappropriate until you think it is. God’s Menu is about Stray Kids having it all (everything’s you want) in their music and you wanting to come back for more. You can make the lyrics inappropriate if the lyrics/video weren’t so intense. Meanwhile Cookie=CD is about them seducing a boy (not sexually though, we can see this with Attention and Hybe Boy) by baking a special sweet treat for him, inviting him to come and try it, they warn him: you’ll get addicted because you can’t find such a sweet thing anywhere else; hence all the toppings in the lyrics. The price to pay for their seduction is the cavity, “Cavity’s your problem,” because eating all those cookies, all that sugar, will probably give him caries. It’s part of the consequences of getting addicted to them.
I can understand the uh “Western Sexualization” of the song since I’m living in the U.S. but I don’t think you can get a cavity from eating a girls 🐱, an STD maybe, but not a cavity 😂.

About your little gay brain, I'm not gay but I also got the message that they finally get along together (not as just friends but like couple because Danielle, maybe she wasn't trying to be flirty or anything, but she looked like trying to seduce Haerin hahaha) after the basketball guy was just playing with both of the girls. So yeah, you don't have to be gay for getting that message ^^
About the Cookie song, it was a metaphor of "baking a CD" so they played with that, in Korean it's not really inappropiate BUT I'm completely agreed about them not paying attention to how the lyrics could be understood by foreigner fans. Personally, when I first listened to it I didn't think bad about the lyrics maybe because I know a bit of Korean and also because I'm not an English native speaker too ^^ BUT I say it again: "they should have thought further on how the lyrics could be understood by English speakers before doing it".

He gave Danielle the heart lollipop and that's why she already had it and he was trying to give the same one tk Haerin but he was caught when Danielle came down the stairs with it. OH MY GOODNESS YES YES! So sorry I'm a bit late but that's okay, I totally agree with you in everything you said (I'm still getting to know the Members the two that I can tell from the rest are Danielle and Haerin becsuse they are very unique, I mean they all are but those two just look really different!) Dude I am younger than two of them and older than three of them (Danielle by a couple days, Haerin by a little over a year, and Hyein by a few years) and let me just say when I heard some of these lyrics/saw the Music Videos I went really protective over them like some of the lyrics especially in Cookie made me cringe and wonder what in the world but overall I can tell they are going to be a FANTASTIC Group, their Music is very catchy, and their choreo is GREAT (but again they need to change some of those lyrics! Also dude again I had the same reaction as you like at 9:15 I could not stop laughing the way you reacted was Amazing and to be Honest I did the same thing, at 28:50 again dude I could not stop laughing, at 18:54 I'm not trying to assume anything but they aren't helping that was VERY fruity well that whole MV was (and what I got from it is that they both had a crush on the same guy and then the guy was playing both of them so they teamed up against the boy and then fell in love with each other??) And at 21:05 that was the cutest smile ever but also again very suspicious, at 23:06 yeah you're right look at the way Haerin looks back at Danielle very cute, at 23:35 I've said this many times VERY SUS (and yes it reminds me of KHAN I'm Your Girl and it's so cute), and at 32:18 the fact that it was a girl (or they/them) either way there is definitely some LGBT stuff going on here! Again they are a great Group but the lyrics of most of these songs (except for Hurt) are a little weird and I don't know how to feel about it but they are pretty catchy, anyways I can't wait for you to more of NewJeans in the future and I hope that you are doing well and staying safe and healthy!
P.S. If you ever need any good Videos I could totally help you out if you need it, there are a lot of theories about Hype Boy you should definitely check them out yourself (because I'm still confused on what was going on!) 🤣😂

I think some people forget that these girls are highschool age, the age when teenagers start seriously thinking about dating and move past the innocent crushes of middle school. When they sing about stuff that sounds kinda suggestive, you have to remember that they are singing to teenagers their own age. That's why all the boys in their music videos are very obviously young teenagers. This is the age when everyone starts to develop their tastes both romantically and sexually, its when you start to try and figure yourself out and what you like and don't like. I don't know about you guys but almost every couple I knew in high school was boning every chance they could get lol
Even if Cookie was meant to be a bit suggestive, so what? They aren't talking to adults in the song they are talking to their hypothetical high school age crush and that's NORMAL. We as adults need to be the mature ones and realize it's not directed at us and if it weirds us out, that's because WE are seeing them sexually and taking the song as them being sexual towards US and that is an US problem, not a them problem. Re frame your mindset and I think Cookie will be more enjoyable for you. Also it's not like they had them half naked in the music video doing highly sexual dance moves, I mean the youngest two were in full length pants for the entire video😅

I think 'Cookie' lyrics definitely just depend on one's perception/expectation about it. The girls themselves said that the cookie they were talking about in the song symbolized their album. They made the 'cookie' a.k.a their album, and they hope the fans would want/love it. At the beginning of the mv, a giant cookie was rolling and at the end of the mv, their album cd was the one rolling instead of the cookie. If you listen to the song with that perception then it will definitely sound innocent. On the other hand, if you have the expectation that the song is gonna sound inappropriate based on what you heard others say, then your mind is definitely gonna interpret the meaning into something else which will make you get what others were saying about it.

Might get hate for this, but I think it’s an important discussion regardless. In terms of the lyrics to cookie, I think the problem is also that the subtitler and lyricists clearly has a grasp on contemporary conversational English. A lot of the ways things are expressed in the lyrics of cookie’s mv in the subs comes off entirely plausible as intentional innuendos, or literally viral tweets. Not to mention it being paired with quite a low-light MV that felt imo a bit male gaze-y directed at times…. So regardless of intention, if it WASN’T intention (in which I personally doubt) it doesn’t feel like they cared to consider the possibility of it sexualising the minors. I also feel like it’s a bit infantilising to insinuate that all Koreans view it as cute, I’ve seen some (non-fan) Korean comments showing concern too. However I actually really enjoyed Attention! The song is fully my vibe and the music video is so stellar. But cookie really threw me off.
I’d love to hear your thoughts!
Edit: I think your note about how they seem to be promoting to a western audience is a VERY important one for this discussion too.
