The presentation of this movie is why I love it. The opening shot building up something unknown, and instead of a jump scrare of some monster, we just cut to the boat about to dock on the island. thus introducing the main characters to us and seetting up the tone of the film. All through the cinematography and the soundtrack.
I love how no one is talking about the first few seconds of the opening scene, it’s the perspective of the lighthouse itself seeing the ship coming into view.

I love how it seems like the forshadowing of the old crew leaving still working together carring that box, as if to alude to mentality or aproach a couple of guys need have in order to make it through the whole thing, but the mentality of the newly arrived crew is should by each guy carring their own things
Old crew probably had a "what's yours is mine what's mine is yours" type attitude to it, that they wouldn't be there too long, they're just doing a simple job, really looked out for eachother. And both were probably nothing at all like Dafoe's character lol.
Not excactly... It did receive a nomination for Best Cinematography, and that's honestly all I was hoping for, considering that it's a really small movie in terms of publicity
Honestly because of just how bright the lamp is compared to the rest of the film when I watched this for the first time I was starting to get hypnotized

My dudes. Anyone going into this expecting story is going to be disappointed in the same way y'all were. It's not a classic three act hero's journey type of film and that's exactly why it's special - but if you go in expecting that, it'll squash those expectations pretty fast. It's a period nightmare film, and it's about as good a one as anyone could do. It's not a masterpiece in terms of story, but that's not what it's for. It is pretty fantastic in terms of atmosphere and feeling, though - same way a nightmare is. The look of it, Pattinson's acting in it, the insanity of it, the way that insanity makes you feel insane too toward the end. It's about as close as you can get to feeling like those guys who vanished from the lighthouse in real life back in the day. @@sleepingdogpro i actually like your perspective on it and I pretty much do agree that the feeling of the movie is where it stands out, i just wish the pacing of the movie would speed up as it went on, cause even though it was edited in a pretty fast pace way, it didn't feel like it. That's my only real complaint when it comes to the feel of the movie.
If there was no background music, imagine how much more haunting the opening scene would be. Just the sounds of the boat, the foghorn and the ocean. O.o

Pipesmokers put the pipe upside down so that the tobacco wont be put out by the hard wind or rain. There is a saying that if you see a old sailor turn his pipe upside down, then prepare for a storm. Also it's not a crackpipe but a clay pipe. Was very common among sailors

That's exactly what I thought when I saw the trailer. It was such a unique look to me.
I also love when Dafoe puts in his pipe upside down, showing us that things were never really normal even from the start of the movie.
