What if someone fihures out a way to automatically and intelligently suggest new changes to OSM based on Google maps? So that OSM misses nothing? I can see a future when both would have the same roads if they collaborate, but Google is a corporation and OSM is an open source project, so some legalities might not go right either way
The problem are licenses. If Google notices somebody uses their data without paying monthly fees, they can sue the hell out of the contributor. You might want to check out Overture Maps, so far it’s pretty promising and tries to be a middle ground between Google maps and OSM. It’s not live yet though.
Yeah I think the attribution requirements for both companies is the limiting factor, but that does seem like the best approach. Oh well, Google Maps is great for driving and Outdoor apps are great for hiking + cycling!
