I genuinely appreciate that Google keeps all of the old coverage available to view whenever you want (at least in the US). Those time capsules are important.
Fun fact - Old coverage usage used to dress the street view marker up as Dr. Emmet Brown (Back to the Future)
Imagine in the future looking back at the images captured in 2007 and how different things like the traffic will look. It will be like time travel!!
No, they aren't. Shut up.
It's worldwide available.

Google maps streetview is groundbreaking in terms if capturing history. Can you imagine how it would feel in a hundred years to look back at these images?
I do imagine things like that often it's cool. I also think it would be cool to find a snickers wrapper in some dirt like 250 years from now
There was an exercise in the UK, back the 1980s, called the Domesday Project, that did something similar with stills from VHS footage. There are comparative videos between the 1980s effort, and Google Street view.
Domesday project used laserdisk. It was revived on the web but I think it has rotted again.
In 100 years the old Google data will likely have rotted or be hidden.
@@stevecarter8810 There's still a copy on the Web, though the official anniversary Website is no-more, and copies of the laserdiscs are held by the copyright libraries, Computer History Museum, Museum of Computer History, ... if not necessarily a requisite SCSI interfaced LaserDisc player, and a suitable computer system to access the player. The street view footage was captured from VHS cameras, complemented by film stills, and the maps scanned from the paper OS copies then around, but it's UK Street View footage from 1984-85, and published in 1986. Which is more years, than I have fingers and toes, before the first Google release.

I believe it and I know I have. I was blocked from Google earth a couple times because of "suspicious amounts of traffic" from my IP. It was funny and I included a screenshot of that when I applied to be a Google earth employee. Didn't get the job tho
The fact that there’s some roads where no one has captured street view in almost 17 years seems strange. I guess they are quite isolated though
yo portal2player
The house I lived in from 2013-2018 (in a suburb of Phoenix) was nothing but a concrete foundation (Google street view from 2012) until some time in 2024. Double checking it just now for this comment was actually the first time I'd ever seen the house in street view.
Oh wait it shows the dates. So previously the street view was from May 2011, and now it's from February 2024
My road in Wisconsin still hasn’t gotten covered yet. But Wisconsin is just different.
the biggest joke here in the Netherlands is that street view is so often redone that you can see the development from a new building being built with in a short time.
on the other hand google maps satellite shots are from 2010.
some entire neighbourhoods and roads don't exist on the satellite image.
That’s so weird
Australia's satellite updated Last month and December 2023... It was previously 2019 cameras (Great Example is the M1 Pacific Motorway Upgrarde, look unfinished when in reality it was fully finished)
I think someone in Australia is paying google, because the maps normally have very recent satellite imagery (which I think is actually aerial imagery from aircraft) and the street view gets updated every few months in some places.

I love the fact now that the Google camera is now doing photo shots of bike trails and waterways. This really really helps me in deciding whether or not I want to navigate a specific waterway or bike trail.
the bik trail part was developed in collaboration with the TU Delft for the Dutch marked as here bike trails/roads are really everywhere and it really helps navigating them.
You mean....literally the point of mapping?
My town is kinda weird on google maps. Every two photos it shifts from March 2012 to May 2024 and I can go back and forth in time and see everything that changed
Mine is just 2012 so yea
Mine town didnt update on google street view like 7 years and my street isnt even fully covered
mine goes back to 2009 a lot has changed some of the billboards and cars that were still around look downright retro
@@belstar1128 Welp, you have an even better time machiene
@@promaster424 there are multiple streets in my neighborhood that will go between Apr. 2023, 2012, and Aug. 2007 within 100 ft. It's kinda strange to see some of the houses just appear, completely change color, or just show signs of life. Not to mention the fact that the 2007 coverage looks completely dead. It's like they took the saturation and turned it down 50%.
Google Street View coverage is important
Street view history would be better, I haven't found a way to scroll between times so far. (using gmaps)

One of my favorite things to do is explore Street View in VR with the dedicated VR app that they have on Steam. It's integrated really well. I'm so grateful that Google decided to embark on this HUGE project for everyone.
Google Earth fandom waiting for and being excited for new drops like a videogame update was not something I expected but has made me very happy to know exists
16:17 I believe that is the road that Rainbolt was captured on - nice easter egg !
18:08 He's rotating the globe in the wrong direction.
Big ups for quality research vids
also Turkey really looks different 9:27
don't worry about it
@@callmeoceanman XD
Its kinda annoying if you see some streets that are not covered in your village
i have realized that south Korea hasn't had any new street view since 2018
In parts of Switzerland we haven’t gotten an update since 2013
It wasn’t long ago when one could see the pre collapse 35W bridge in Minneapolis. They removed that street view though.
I’ve always wondered why the camera quality varied so much around the world. This video was exactly what I was waiting for! However, I wish you had gone into more detail about each camera, perhaps providing their specs and what sets them apart. Otherwise, it was a great video-thanks for compiling everything and making it entertaining!
I still remember if you go onto street view and switch it back to 2007 at my old house (ironically the house right next door to the one I live in now) you can see a giant stork in the front yard because I had been just born
There is no way this video has only 300 views after a day. It's so good, it should have at least a few ten thousand, if not even a hundred thousand
It’s funny this is still happening, as it was a quirk back when I was in high school. That 300 or 301 is a quirk while all of TH-cam’s cache servers around the world catch up. I think Tom Scott did a video on it if you’re interested.
now it has 11k
@@rrq Now it has 21k.
Now it has 900k
14:45 this happened because when 2015 coverage got published, people didn't really like others peeking into their houses so they had to lower their camera when they came back. The quality is weird because there are a few snapshots taken in different months and one was taken in the rainy season while the other one was taken in the dry season. The dry season is over exposed while the other is under exposed
I'm a weirdo that just loves to browse street view. As a delivery driver in the UK it's a brilliant tool to scope out a delivery destination, the width of the road and turn around points. In the UK we have crappy little roads that are barely wide enough for a car never mind a truck.
im sure you love this video dont you. cant imagine why.

Very interesting video OceanMan. I always love to see a timeline of how something has evolved.
If time travel ever existed, think about how cool it would be if the google cars could go back in time and we could see the development of any place in the world over time right from our phones.
1:14 you forget mexico in tijuana we got 2007 street view
New drinking game! Take a sip every time he says "coverage"!
death 😂
Thank you for explaining why India's street view looked so bad. I always wondered what what caused such a drop in quality, now understood that it was shot like that.
its crazy to think how much this endeavour must cost.
the car itself is already a pretty penny considering the mileage, the driver, the cameras and last but not least fuel and maintenance.
not to forget about storage and server uptime.
No issue for a blood sucking corporation like google
that van cofounded google? damn

Whats ..wrong with the current street view ?
As a photographer, this application has been very important and a valuable tool for me to help find and decide to whether or not to photograph old Farmsteads that I scour the countryside looking for to add to my photography portfolio. It’s also a great window into the not so distant past of what certain places used to look like then and what they look like now.
There is a country where it now is illegal to Google Street View in it, but it has a 2008 coverage.
Germany it is!
Man this video is so important because it’s of the history you put into it I like it
That's crazy, just finished this video and thought it was from some huge channel the entire time
Love looking at my town back in 2007 and seeing all the changes it had
Liked and subbed, this is underrated as hell and I bet the rest of your channel is too.
San Francisco is where Google is located so no surprise it was the first city to have google street view

Yeah, and it wasn't terrible back then

Nice and comprehensive work! This is gonna be a good resource to return to! Never knew India ended up with that much coverage. Such a shame half of it is blurred and the other half is so grainy!
17:58 regarding Bosnia and Herzegovina, yeah, they are getting street view coverage, albeit only in 2 cities, the capital Sarajevo, and a small city nearby called Visoko (visoko is the place that has the Bosnian pyramids) so yeah
Underrated
In the US my favorites are from 2011-2016. Maybe it’s the nostalgia but the pictures look and feel so warm. The 2023 coverage has great resolution though
Good job with the video but all those 1 frame red flashes for transitions really hurts my eyes after a bitu
My uncles place had been recently updated from it being from 2007, it was when he even had horses and his auto towing business running back then!
Fun and informative video! There are some distracting flashes of bright colors in a few scene transitions, but aside from that, lovely job!
finally someone who's geography entusiasm came from geoguessr! same as me! always camping on virtualstreets posts hehe :P you share my frustrations on new bad coverage!
Great video! Something is up with some of the frames though when you're showing google maps streetview -- they're like flashes of solid colours like red, orange, green, and I think some others. E.g. there's 3 of them just between 9:00 and 9:10, it's pretty distracting for me, but was still great to learn about this topic, and I feel inspired to explore more of google maps street view!
I noticed that since 2019 Street View looks awful in tunnels, previously it was a bit dark but still visible and now there's a bright yellow tint all over the image.
You can clearly see the difference in the Eisenhower-Johnson tunnels in Colorado but there are countless examples around the world.
yeah I think they get overloaded by them LED's
When talking about Romania, you showcased a street I was on when I was watching.
Gen 1 and 2 cameras are nostalgic to me lol
great video dude!
This is some 250k subscriber type of content. Amazing job
Nicely done! I can say for certain that Google had street view in Tokyo before May of 2009. I traveled to Japan and that time, and I actually used to help find my hotel.
Outstanding video!
great video for a small youtuber 👏👏
its awesome that for version 3 you did the route in napa i take to work everyday
Great video!
That "almost 20 years" caught me off guard and punched me in the gut
Google maps and street view has saved my ass so many times it's crazy. I drive very tall trucks and verify any bridges along the way have enough clearance using street view because that kind of data really isn't elsewhere
Great vid
Every time you said "Trekker" I kept looking around for a nerdy looking person in a Starfleet uniform.
The most fun thing is that Google maps covered so much that they even captured my Gradpa with our old dog aswell as me not so long ago lol
What's wild is my borough has had a street view go through and around 3 times, but never hit my street. Only about 20 miles outside of Philly too.
Loved the flashing red triangle in the video ...
Sick video more like this please
13:27 I got caught by a google street view car in late July 2023 ( around the 26 or 27 July I believe) by 12 August the pictures of me were published. But a week later they were removed and replaced by August 2023 photos! And no you can’t go back to see them. Also interesting enough that street wasn’t updated since 2012 until May 2023 street view images which got replaced by July 2023 images and then August 2023 images. And now you can’t see any the May and July 2023 images on streets view, luckily I managed to get screenshots of me.
I'm happy I was the age to grow up with Google Streetview documenting the history of my city, seeing the Blockbuster, the Taco Bell that was around since my mom was in her 20s, what was befkre the local Target, the landscape befire all the Student housing showed up for the college. So much history wiped away, but not forgotten thanks to Google 2007 Streetview.
I started seeing google car in Bosnia these last few months so I hope we get coverage soon 😅
In the Philippines, 90 % of some coverage have Street View, including in Palawan, Marinduque, Romblon, etc. but the rest are doesn’t have coverage mostly in Sulu Archipelago
Alaskan here, long time Anchorage resident: at 12:50, when you're looking north on C street, on the left in that green building, you can still see the outline of "Consulado de Mexico" -- i could be wrong, but i highly doubt that street view was taken in 2019. That consulate closed in Nov 2015. I'm pretty sure that was cleaned up before 2019, kinda like you can see in the current street view (at least i can).
Its always fun to explore my neighborhood in 2008 on google maps
Back when Google Earth published pics taken by those who had been there and pinned their location with the pic. OMG I got to see the inside of pyramids, ruins of Pompeii, museums and castles - breathtaking!! I also met some wonderful folks (those who had taken the photos) and made great friends all via email! Alas, those days of traveling around the world vicariously are long gone. However, at least I can still go driving around town all over the world so that's fantastic! Thanks! ❣
I honestly didn't know it started like that, wow...
why are you flashbanging me with red between every cut
For some reason the latest street view in the Houston area have a foggy look to them. They also appear to be removing some of the years on street view.
New cameras have better quality but also they suck in tunnels. Also, starting from 2022, Google Maps is active all year round in Croatia
Street view is a game changer. I can travel to another city in another State and drive all around without making any wrong turns. It's like I've been there before.....because I have, using Street View. Street view has probably saved countless lives by preventing accidents.
In Portugal we have street view in rail lines, with the camera being attached to an empty cargo wagon
the red flashes that flicker between some switches between streetview imagery are hurting my eyes
I bet everything hurts you...
?@@I_Am_Your_Problem
@@YourOfflineNow They seem to have replied with similar weird comments to everyone whose brought up the flashing/flickering. I don't really understand why, I think pointing out that the flickering can be disturbing is good feedback that the creator can keep in mind when working on future videos
I've also been seeing a lot of streetview shots using insta360 cams lately
because of law street view of germany was completly new done around 2 years ago. before that there were only images from 2008 of major cities because of privacy law back than. because google set it up new so the old sues werent available anymore. but now all the old images are gone :(. and there is no different time available. I mean there is a private company which memoriezes the WHOLE COUNTRY and they pay for it and its available for everyone for free. it would love to view places here at different times and it will never be possible to catch that missing time again...
2:32 omg i wrote the comment even before starting to watch the video. im so damn hyped brah
Streetview is a hobby of mine and we have alot of roads without streetview, or roads where they haven't updated since 2007 like in the video. I want to make my own paths, but for now I am stuck making photospheres with my phone.
Totally loving this "Grounded" game soundtrack. It has a bit of a Strangerthings vibe.
Because of the cost of traveling and no vacation time at work; Google Street View has been how I take my mini vacations now. I just pick some place different each night. I just got back from the islands below India last night.
So, in what version did they ruin the direction arrows, when you try to follow a road?
2:31 I knew there will be a special part in this video for Germany even this is not the whole story. A German politician also made a joke claiming that Google will also take pictures through your windows to show the inside of your house. Many people thought this was true and... you can imagine the rest of the story since Germans really care about their privacy (despite knowing/acceping that Google, facebook etc already know everything about us). The story of Street View in Germany could be big enough for an extra video. Greetings from Germany. 🤣😅

I do like the color feel of Gen 3 even if it’s slightly less quality than Gen 4. Gives me nostalgia for those summer feels.

I havent seen a streetview vehicle in years ! When i logged on to see my house it was from like 2009 !
Thanks for this! I always wondered why that swooping low sky happened in some places and not others. I've seen some snippets of 2008 imagery around and about, usually in remote areas or dumpy little towns in the USA. Yeah, terrible. I can't beleive how amazed I was back then!😂 I'm always waiting for more African countries to be covered, glad to hear there are some additions.
banger vid mr ocean man
It drives me crazy when I go looking for towns on street view and it’s still hasn’t been photographed since the generation 1 camera days or there are nothing at all!
Even in Australia we got our first coverage in late 2007 early 2008 (very bad quality though). Quality didn’t improve until 2009 - 2010, but unfortunately wasn’t much better. Now though it’s quite good
Up until just last year, the last time a Google street car drove past my house was 2011, lol
I had a gap from 2007, a year road work was being done, to 2019, another year road work was being done. I couldn't see my street in normal condition until last year.
I wish they had started before I was born lol like I want to see how stuff was in the 90’s
The lower quality cameras stayed in the US mostly until like 2009, especially in rural areas. There's places near me, which is mostly farmland, that have street view from May 2009, and it looks worse than some of the 2007 images.
I’m really annoyed cause Google street view has just given up on my town, I haven’t had a new street view image since mid 2019 (I live in a town near New Zealand’s capital city)
I drove one of those vehicles back in 2015 for two weeks and covered over 300 miles.
