Im new to your videos. I kept an aquarium from age 4 to 38. Been out of the hobby about a decade. I started cycling a new 29g tank a couple months ago. It was finally ready, so i grabbed 2 nerites. Theyre cute, but they are no mystery snail ❤ I found you out here, and i gotta say, youve taught me more in the last couple weeks than all my years in the hobby ❤ i thank you for that. Also, you seem very spiritual in the way you treat your babies, how you think (burying them), and your music. I watch to learn, but more often i watch to relax. Side note, my new addition, an orange baby, decided it would NOT leave my finger when i tried to put it in the tank. I tried offering the glass, the wood, the substrate, even food. It wanted my finger 😆 how do you dislodge such a delicate gentle creature without harming it? Took me 20 minutes of it chewing my skin and fingernail. Was the weirdest and yet most magickal feeling 😂 no worries, i washed my hands with plain water before. Im gonna name this orange cutie pie Julius 😁
I just started my first tank because my son has been obsessed with snails ever since our trip to Maine last summer. He is so excited to finally have his own.
Thank you for the helpful tips and the respectful tone. I have been torn on wether I should keep my shells but I have come to the conclusion it is a good way to memorialize them. Thanks again ❤️
Man I been beating myself up over my snail Sqwishy passing away. So I'm not crazy people really love their snails like I do!! When my goldens (Gary) time comes I will be a mess. He had a close scare when he lost his gf sqwishy.
I give my empty snail shells to my shell dwellers ( Neolamprologus Brevis ) .These fish live in shells, breed in shells and their tiny little fry grow up in snail shells. So my snail shells gets to be a house for small fishes.
My first mystery snail died last week, she was just under two years old. She lived a long life, but I’m devastated. Her she’ll is going to become a mini succulent pot! Thank you for the idea 💕
i may be a year late to this video but one of my snaily friends recently passed, i am sad he is gone but now im happy because now i know how i can keep his shell forever to remember him. thank u lav! 💜
Thank you I had my first snail death and I didn't know what to do with my little guy, but I couldnt bury him yet. So I'm going to save his shell, and remember him forever ❤️
Thank you so much for such a sensitive and informative video! My snail just passed away recently and I couldn’t figure out how to preserve him properly… everything I found online was very harsh and even was referencing how to kill the snail first so I was very pleased to find a video that wasn’t so upsetting and actually helped to comfort me about his passing… thank you so much
My mystery snail Gary passed. He was just between 2 and 3 yrs old (idk how old he truly was when I got him). I plan to bury his body in my garden under the rosebuds with my betta babes who have passed, and I'm going to repurpose his shell after this to make an ursula necklace. Thank you for this video to help me create something beautiful out of his loss.
Crying by the end tho ♡ thank U ♡ I've been looking for a week on how to preserve my baby, Nail was his name (Ofcourse because kale was his favorite) ♡ I've had him for 7 years already, we got him with my rabbit, he would sit and watch him thru the tank ♡ I'm a resin artist so I want ro preserve his shell somehow in a resin creation ♡ maybe give him some real butterfly wings so he can finally fly ❤
I keep my snails shells in my succulents as well. I'm obsessed with both snails and succulents and am so happy to have stubbled upon your channel while I attempt to hatch my first 2 clutches.
Mine will go to my hermit crabs for them to use as they molt & grow ❤️ There’s also a shortage of snail shells for marine hermit crabs (that live in salt water at beaches) because of beach combers/shell collectors taking them. Starting to see hermit crabs use trash as their “shell” 😢 So anything tossed into an area where marine hermit crabs frequent will go to good use since hermit crabs rely on these. Without shells (from other animals) that they can use, they die quickly because their “belly” is completely soft. ❤️
Thank you so much my garden snail just died and I didn't know how to safely preserve his shell. I only had 3 the other two were easy to get their body's out but Dumpster can't be taken out so easily, I also damaged my other two's shells taking them out without warm water :( Dumpster (the one who just died) was my favorite (ik ik no favorite child but he was) it's been hard the last few days. I make a mold of the shell then cast it in resin with dried flowers inside to make into a necklace.
it's a bit different but my garden snail died a while ago and I just had no idea what to do with her shell, she lived a little over 2 years but I wish I took better care of her still:( I'm thinking of putting her on one of my plants
I love this video! A few years ago, I started keeping mystery snails and completely fell in love with them. As the older ones started to die with age, I had a thought -- should I keep their shells? They were the original mystery snails I owned, and they mean a lot to me. I felt so weird about wanting to keep their shells until I saw your video. Thanks for being a weirdo, from a fellow weirdo.
It's such a silly thing when you think about it🤦 but it's knowing it was within your care and died is why we mourn for something so tiny compared to the universe 😔❤️ thankyou for this though! Very educational 👍
Thank you for your video. My mystery snail named Mosely died today. He put up a good fight. He hung on for a full month after his opperculum fell off. I put him in a hospital tank by himself. His opperculum began to grow back but then sadly his shell cracked at his opening, but he seemed so strong i really thought he would survive that also. I felt like i was really going to have a great true story to share with fellow mystery snail lovers about this brave and strong little guy holding on. I made him a little "island" next to shallow water which i changed twice a day from the clean cycled tank he originally lived in. The water level was enough for him to immerse himself or climb on to his island if he choose. He would climb on to the island and climb back into the water periodically at his own will. i would put a blood worm, or crab pellet or daphnia next to him so he wouldnt have to search for food. I believed he was honestly going to survive and even thrive, and then I would put him back in his original tank, but i found him gone today. my heart broke for him and i do mourn his loss. Snails are cool and i love watching them in my tanks. I had a nerite snail who passed and i saved his shell, and plan to save mosley's also.
I'm just so sad over here! We had a Betta named Swim Shady and got our first mystery snail with him 2 years ago and named him Hardshell-E or (shelly) since we added a rabbit and a Narite snail. But Shell-E outlived them all!!! Sadly 4 days ago he started dying, I separated him from our new girl mystery snail (they didn't mate yet 😢) and did my best to keep him comfortable and kept him where I am all day so he wouldn't be alone. And I know he was just a snail, and my fiancé thinks I'm just ridiculous, but I spent so much time with him over the last 2 years, he's been my constant buddy and quiet listener, and I'm so heartbroken having to look up how to separate him from himself
I am so sorry for the loss of your snail friend 😔. You were a great snail mom to Shell-E. I hope keeping their shell brings you comfort. I, too, have a select few shells from wonderful past snail friends of mine that i now keep in extra special places around my home, so they are with me forever. Giant hugs, you are doing great 🫂🐌💜
My poor baby goop :( She lived a long year and 6 months, laid many eggs, and managed to hide a couple of them to grow and carry her legacy forward. I will keep her shell to remember her.
When truly dead, I gently boil the carcass to remove the body. I used to put back in tank, but made me sad. Now I place place them around my favorite plants.
9pm Oct.'23 Wow... im so happy that im not so weird after all❣️ It was hard back when i lost my first Betta fish (Mr.Limpett any boomers remember...? Don Knotts?) Anyways, once i found out lots of people are very fond of their fish i didn't feel so odd about standing in front ot my snail & watching for long periods of time. Snails are actually pretty fascinating and now after this video my daughter found for me I don't feel a bit alone in Misty eyes and lump in my throat when 'He' died.(how can I tell it was a boy... I couldn't technically . But it ate like a horse & more than doubled in size in a year....Now the new oneis tiny & orange im definitely going to give it some kind of a name and not be embarrassed for caring about (her?) Any suggestions? Maybe some kind of a universal friendly, snail around town kinda name? Wonder if SALT would work on the guts? I know slugs and salt definitely don't go together. Man this was a long text. I live alone , a fish was one of my better friends & now im developing snail feelings... Issues?!💊
Great video Lav. You have helped me with several different issues I have encountered. So now that I now have many snails many from the clutches born in my tank, I have noticed the older snails had passed. But also some of the younger ones. At this time I am keeping the shells to keep track of which colors are dying. Not sure if it had any significance. But then I recalled seeing this video way back when it was first released. Searched for it to watch again. Thank you and your followers comments. I am going to ask my wife if she wants to put them in her potted plants.
You did such a great job with this subject. Made me emotional, which was weird for me. I think adding them to a clear candle wax would be neat.. Never tried it though
i love the way you put them in your plants. i havent had much luck with succulents but i love them. i think i over water them. do you have any advice to help me keep my succulents alive?
Thank you for such thoughtful video. I think my blue might be starting to die . I’m so sad he stays on his end and won’t come out no matter how many times I move him upright. He looking squishy. How can you tell when there gone . This is my first mystery snail 🐌
So sorry to hear about your blue. They will have no reaction to touching their Opurculum at all and will start to smell after they pass . Hugs to you🐌💜
Thank you! I don't see why not, make sure to really rinse all the soap and let dry well first of course though. 🐌♥️ I've wanted to keep little shell dwellers one day too(on my bucket list) that would be really neat to do.
@@LavsSnails Yeah me too but I don’t really like the look of escargot shells. I wonder if scuds would clean the bodies out for you?? Anyway something for me to think about. Thanks again
Thank you for uploading this this is way better than those horrible people who do yucky stuff to living snails, just found a broken garden snail shell on a garden walk, it is just slightly broken and dry, there are no living things in them right? I want to save this in honor.
Couple different reasons. For starters, when they die, whether they are dark or light footed the shell will be the primary color. For example: the ivory and blues after death and after the body is removed, the shell looks white. Same with browns/chestnut, the shell will be lightish brown. Golds stay yellow and jade shells look yellow, if that makes any sense. Only exception i have seen for this are dark purples and magentas. Magenta almost look brown out of water and empty. Second, I run an all ivory tank that I was breeding only ivories for awhile in (for a research project I was involved with) and the first generation in that tank is reaching the end of their lifespan. Honestly there are some purples and magenta in there too, but they sort of look brown in the jar and more so on film. In addition to all that, I sell way more of the other color variations. Phew! Well, that was a long answer to your question! Lol hope I made some sense! Thanks for watching🐌♥️
She got sick during Hurricane Helene. We were out of power for over a week. I kept stirring their little tank. After 4-5 days of the power promising to be back that night . I just took her and our fish to my parents fish tank. They’re not the best with keeping their tank. When our power came back on we put them back into their newly clean tank. A few days later we got a 10 gallon tank and put her in there. She hasn’t been well since our power went out a month ago. Air baths helped for a while. Now I’m trying to have the courage to clean her out of her shell. ❤
I love how delicate you handle this video.. The idea of putting a plant inside of it shell after is beautiful and poetic thank you.. ❤️ 🐚

I plan to. I keep my first mystery snail goo's shell for this reason.
Does anyone use a protective spray or sealant after cleaning the shell? If so, what do you use ?
Hello, Would you ever keep them in your aquarium after cleaning them?
Yes I do that too!
I could never :(

I fire the dead snail out of my wrist rocket sling-shot and shoot it at snail eating birds. Poetic Justice.
