    I was just gifted some Mystery Snails from a lady at a local pet store, 3 adults and 6 tiny babies. All the adults have erosion damage to some extent, one has a hole that I believe is nearly, if not already, through the shell entirely. I believe it’s due to low ph levels. You’ve given me hope to be able to save them! Bless you!

    Having a piece of *actual snail shell* _right there_ in front of me, I think I would have patched the hole in the snail's shell with a piece of snail shell rather than eggshell. First, I would be certain that it is 100% biologically compatible. Second, I would be pleased at the color match. Very nice video! I appreciate the care for this snail even while you were not feeling well.

      That's some next level, big brain thinking right there!

      Came here to say the same thing. If I had access to a small piece of an actual snail shell, (even from another deceased snail,) I would definitely patch a hole or crack with that, for sure. Potentially a *permanent* repair, and the snail could just move on with its life, stronger than before the injury occurred.

      You would think that perhaps. But, a mystery snail shell is very hard & rigid in comparison to an eggshell. This would make forming the patch to the shell rather difficult. Also, the piece of mystery shell would be lacking the added benifit of a membrane like the eggshell has. It would be a better choice to, in fact, use the eggshell if you had one.

    You are such a sweetheart...thank you so much for this video!!! I have a dozen mystery snails, lots of pond and ramshorns...I had no idea you could use egg shell to repair their shells.. only one fall and no breaks but I will remember this video if it ever happens...thank you again, Lav! You are a snail goddess ❤️

    Got to wonder how this little survivor came by his injuries… how long do the patches remain on? Does the egg membrane not eventually rot and cause infection?

    HI Liv! You were so brave here! Thanks for showing us the hard stuff. question. I have adopted someones 2 Peruvian Giant Apple Snails. They are about a Large mystery snail size. Their Shells are A MESS. Im not sure what to leave alone or what to fix. The good news is they should be ok from now on. they look like they have been chewed on. Anyway I could DM you some pics? Thank you so much!

    When you do this does it heal over time and the egg shell eventually fall off or do you have to repatch him as time goes on?

    Hello, I just wanted to say thank you so much for taking the time to put such DETAILED INFORMATION about such a difficult to find help with subject matter!!! I literally just hatched my first clutch two days ago, so they are tinnnyyy little babydolls....all Gollden like their mom!!! And thankfully she laid 3 more clutches who are presently incubating. But sadly ab two weeks ago she had a fall....and a crack bad enough so that it exposed her flesh in two areas almost 3/4 around her big beautiful shell!! And I did a patch job similar to this but didn't know about the Egg Membrane method...!! However, I did use super glue and a sanitized piece of plastic grocery bag (saw it on another video before I discovered your AMAZING Channel!! So, you literally are now my go to for anything mystery snail related. Because I as I mentioned I have let's see I believe a total of 5 or 6 total clutches left to hatch and I am excited and NERVOUS!! THANK YOU, SO MUCH!!!! YOU BIGGEST FAN! HUG YOUR SNAILS!

    Please help. I have a mystery snail that his shell is not growing well at all. He can hardly put himself back in because it's not big enough. Do you suggest putting snails to sleep if this happens? I just really don't want him to suffer. 😞

    I have a few snails that at least now I have some hope for if I can accomplish half of what I just saw you perform on your snails? Some of my snails have been ravaged by numerous onslaughts by red ramshorn snails? I remove ramshorns 50+ at a time but I believe they are also assisted by numerous red cherry shrimp that are often climbing all over the mysteries? I haven't been adding enough calcium I guess so now I have your special food creations I may be able to help the mysteries survival rates? Thanks again, Ben!

    How did it turn out? Do you ever remove the patch? I tried to rasp a very over-long shell with an Emory board do my snail could actually get out. I had to cut back the shell. Do you have another video for this? Thx

  • @sststr

    I have a little mystery snail, at least 2 months old, and there's a spot in the mantle which must be damaged, as there is a deep gouge running the length of shell behind that spot. There is some base layer of shell underneath it all, the body is not exposed, but it just looks like the Grand Canyon being carved on its shell :( But it is a fairly narrow line, most of the shell looks good, but I wonder if a damaged mantle can heal up? Or is that a life long disability?

    • @sststr
      @sststr 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I just lost a mystery snail this week (not the same one as in the previous post) which also had suffered the same deep gouge problem in its shell, but in this case, at some point, after about an inch of gouged shell had grown in, it closed up and new shell growth was completely normal for the rest of its life. So it turns out the existing gouge doesn't get better, but it may happen at some point the gouging may stop, which is good to know.
      In other shell news, yesterday I had a very large and old ramshorn that due to my own clumsiness in tripping over a cable, got ejected from the tank and landed on the floor, resulting in the mantle being completely shattered. The shattered shell bits must have pierced the flesh as it took me a minute or two to realize it was out of the tank, and by the time I saw it it was lying in a big ol' pool of blood. Amazingly enough, despite the blood loss and mantle destruction, after putting it back in the tank, a few hours later it started moving around a little bit. Now more than a day later, it's moving around a fair bit, even climbing up some stuff. Unfortunately, that's not shell damage that can be repaired, naturally or artificially, so it's a permanent disability now. At least it is an old snail, so it has had a long and productive life already. Still sucks to so oafishly cause serious injury to a critter :( Hopefully it will continue to survive and do its snaily thing for a long time yet to come.

    Love the idea of egg shell patch for nutrition, but does the Permatex Super Glue counteract that? What about just painting on a few coats of a highly forefinger nail polish gel? Loved how you filed the front of the shell

    • @LavsSnails
      @LavsSnails  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I would not advise using any type of nail polish to repair a shell, at all. If it seeps through it could cause an additional injury to their flesh that could potentially be fatal. The gel super glue is the safest choice in my opinion when fixing a break and applying a patch. Thanks Diane 🤗🐌💜!
