  • Ryan compares the cards, tiles, and wood in the latest version of the Catan board game with his dog-eared legacy copy from 2002. How does the old copy stack up against the new? And what gameplay improvements, if any, have gone into the modernized version of the classic gateway game?

    Red die is for Cities and Knights! The roll of the red die lets you draw progress cards, if you've developed your city improvements enough with your commodities. Yellow serves no purpose, as far as I know, though C&K is the only expansion I've played. Catan was my gateway as well, just over a decade ago.

      Ha! Take THAT, yellow!

      But doesn't C&K come with its own red dice?

    I have the same copy as you, and got it around the same time. 2002 i think. It was tough to find, and my local comic shop was doing its best to get copies in. Around that time, board game geek just started up, and I was learning about all these new games. But I've always been gaming since I was a kid. So Catan didn't get me into the hobby, but it helped introduce me to more games as I was searching online for new games.

      i should clarify: Catan got me *back* into the hobby as an adult. (But all the games i enjoyed as a kid were nonsense.) It's hard to imagine a time when The Settlers of Catan was "tough to find"! Once it started appearing at WalMart, it was all over.

    Thanks for this look at the game. I just scored a 2003 version of the game and I'm not sure I have all the pieces. Is there somewhere we can find out what pieces should be included in that version? I've been googling it for a while and can't fine a definitive list of what should be included and what it looks like. I'm thinking the version I have is both incomplete and has some expansion packs thrown in as well.

      Hey, Karen. If you pop onto the Discord server, we can figure it out together. The rulebook should have a parts manifest on the first or second page though.

    I have the fourth edition from 2007 (still with Settlers in the title, with cover art exclusive to English language prints until 2015). Its components look very similar to the newer version you have, including the red and yellow dice which have no unique function in the base game.

    • @NightsAroundaTable
      @NightsAroundaTable  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So - yeah! What's up with those dice? i'm guessing that Cities & Knights requires differently coloured dice (toooo laaaazy to walk over to board game shelf to actually check), so they're saving on the cost of including another pair of dice with that expansion...?

    Which Catan do you recommend one start with? I have a 11 year old son who beats me at Monopoly and Chess. Have you ever played ChinaTown? Curious how it compares.

    Cities & Knights is my "standard" way to play Catan whenever I bring it to the table. I got a blue plastic modular board where I can place hexes and trade harbors with little effort. I also replaced the player pieces and Robber with ones from Meeple Source. Should definitely check them out.

    • @NightsAroundaTable
      @NightsAroundaTable  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Neat! Did you build the frame yourself? (Meeple Source robber: white skin, black clothes! i think that was the intent with the original game in the first place, but the optics were poor. :)

      I purchased the plastic board. It was back when they made custom wooden/plastic boards. I believe it's called "hexboard" now and I just saw it for $200 on Amazon.

    My copy of Catan is also the 2002/3 one, and when I bought the newest copy for my niece I was very disappointed by the quality of the components - everything feels cheaper and less sturdy, and the numbers on the circles weren't printed in the centre. It felt more like a cynical money grab by the manufacturer than a plush new edition of the game. Thanks for the video!

    • @NightsAroundaTable
      @NightsAroundaTable  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really? I didn't find that the components were any worse. The artwork and frame are definitely a step up. But i do find that the Milton Bradley/Parker Bros games you find at Wal Mart have plummeted in quality in the past few decades. i guess you can fix the off-center number problem using the blank circles they give you? :)

    • @mbhayes98
      @mbhayes98 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, the newest edition of Catan feels cheep compared to quality in previous distributions. This is probably due to asmodee buying out Mayfair and trying to make all the money they can
