If you're a technologically inferior army but with a larger force, do you: A) Use that numerical advantage and tactically flank the enemy to get into close range to neutralize their technology. B) Run down the valley of death because you're stupid Creative Assembly AI.
"Eeenemy approaching!" No, sir, that's just the sound of almost 2,000 bullets flying past your ears. Oh and also, looks like your friend's brain is on your armor..
Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin I really wish you were. Keep in mind that sometimes, jokes can be offensive. (Sigh) Being white and yellow at the same time is hard.
As it turns out, withering Snider Enfield volleys and accurate artillery fire are all it takes to break the will of the Samurai. Although, I would've advised that you bring more artillery. You can never have enough gun batteries.
would be cool to have those melee units behave differently against such enemies. Why stop attacking and standing there before them and wait to get shot instead give them a slight charge bonus against archers so they run into their ranks instead. Now it just looks silly like they waiting their turns to parry some blades that arent there.
That is some damn good field artillery placement, and some damn good infantry placement for protection. Especially for that terrain, when those men broke through the corridor, your artillery would have open fields of fire
Marcus Johnson Sub-Saharan Africa has never been more developed than anywhere in the world. They hadn’t have farms, livestock, nor a written language until Europeans came in.
if it wasn't the AI controling that massive army, it would have been at a much closer fight, without even the need to flank. They even had bows, they just had to skirmish your frontline to death then advance in a block instead of waves.
if I'm not mistaken marines actually outrange bow kachi and if they don't the artilery sure does. also that block would get *decimated* by a couple armstrong gun rounds
People.... it's guns vs swords on a open field. How did you think in any shape or form the Samurai were going to win. Close range Samurai would win. But they would have to get close and as you can see that's very difficult.
Boom Shakalaka if you have only 3 units of men whit guns you can make a triangle and it's impossible to use cavalry in this case, I played a lot of times in shogun 2 online or in other tw and simple cavalry is useless in these cases
No. They did that in almost every battle they fought in because wars were usually civil and the losing side would almost always retreat if they were losing.
The "ideal" samurai never retreats. But thats merely the ideal to strive for, in reality it was rare for samurai to not retreat when losing. I mean an entire shogunate was founded upon a Daimyo switching sides, when a Samurai should be loyal to the end. I'm speaking of the Ashikaga Shogunate started by Ashikaga Takauji.
The "ideal" samurai even changed with time, the one we speak of here is closer to the end of the Sengoku Era when Daimyo wanted their troops, both samurai and ashigaru, to follow orders down to the T and exhibit less "courageous charges without orders" so that they can execute their plans. The "ideal" samurai during the Kamakura era and by extension during the Genpei War, and Mongolian Invasions, encouraged samurai to be the "first one to lead a charge into enemy lines and take an enemy head for reward", thereby making it much harder to fully command samurai of that time as it was encouraged to be independent and "thirsty for exhibitions of merit and honor", so command structure resembled more like a street gang with a loose chain of command, I mean samurai at that time would literally leave the battlefield all together once they had a few heads or trophies to show proof of their courageousness and receive a reward. Anyone curious bout the subject can refer to "The Taming of the Samurai" by Eiko Ikegami. The book spans pretty much an analysis of early Kamakura Era Samurai, to Sengoku Era Samurai, and Finally to Tokugawa Era Samurai and a little bit into Early Meiji (before disbandment).
Okay, this says those guys are Royal Marines, but aren't their uniforms supposed to be blue or was that just the Marines of 1890s to 1900? Yes the US Marines wore blue but I thought the Royal Marines did too, or at least that's what it looks like in a painting I saw that showed a Royal Marine and a US Marine fighting together.
For Some reason with me the AI don’t route when running straight into imperial infantry and taking 3-4 salvos and just murder my men in melee with still 100 guys left.
All firearm units in this game have swords instead of bayonets for balancing. If firearm units had bayonets, there would be no reason for the game to have spears, which are used to counter cavalry.
What the game actually Portrays accurately is that in the Boshin wars and the satsuma Rebellion both Sides Used western arms. And tactics. The Japanese were isolationist. Not stupid. On both Sides they Used Krupp guns, Dreyse and Withworth rifles and Armored ships with steam engines.
i mean all melee units are fragile fighting with royal marines you cant expect a bunch of sword weilding spear holding bow shooting peasants to take on and fight a royal marine with boltaction rifles surported by gatling cannons and howitzer.
Should have sent limited amount of samurai at a time to take out the marine battalions, the artillery was way too effective when they all grouped up together.
Around that many units, AI's gets wonky, it causes too much clutter that the AI's would run, then stop, then run and stop repeatedly. If that had not of happened, the Samurai's would of easily over run the first wave and a half.
If you're a technologically inferior army but with a larger force, do you:
A) Use that numerical advantage and tactically flank the enemy to get into close range to neutralize their technology.
B) Run down the valley of death because you're stupid Creative Assembly AI.
B of course
If you knew how many times these has actually happened in history
Then the Red Army must've had some serious AI issues during WW2.

not sure if im right here but that doesnt all look like royal marines
Hot gating the samurai army was a pretty biased setup. Try a more open terrain and see how they do.
honestly would be *more* of a slaughter in open terrain with the exception of the cannons
If it was just 700-900 infantry, maybe it would have actually been a fight.
If you'd let them get deeper into the valley you could have cut off their escape and wiped them all out.
Fantastic
that terrain seriously that so disadvantage for samurai
gatling guns where a wee bit over the top XD
