I agree. Rome 1 had fitting combat music that put you in a mood without really taking focus, and campaign music so soft and fitting that you'd play the game for a thousand hours and still not really mind it being in the background of your awareness. MTW2 was okay but a lot less silky smooth.
Best part of these Disaster Battle videos is that the tactics are SO EASY TO IMPLEMENT in my own campaigns. Love these fall of the samurai vids the most.
I've been using the hill strat and im completely dominating the enemy. A good full line battle I usually have around 8 or 9 inf. Would take 50-200 losses in a full stack battle. Now I take less than 30. The sheer volume of fire hits units before they can even line up for a single volley
I'm the guy that sent that one in. Right before you said you didn't read the mail, I was wondering if you even read it. I just told you where the enemy would come in from and that I set up on that same hill. But it worked out fine anyway. When I fought the battle, they came in all at once and overwhelmed me, so I had no time to regroup. The enemy didn't regroup mid fight like they did here. Lucky break I guess. Anyway great battle, thanks for fighting and winning it. Glad you enjoyed it. Great video.
3:20 Pretty much everything can be stopped by most trees. If the tree is close enough, it can prevent "line of fire" confirmation for the gun(s) to even shoot, even though the hit box isn't as huge as that check thinks and the shell would go well wide of the tree.
A massive hill defense against a much larger force is one of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring kinds of battle ever in FOTS. Like the title says, this is what FOTS was made for. An absolutely astounding and satisfying battle.
Clarification for newer players and newcomers to the channel: Of course, the balance of power *is* important. Getting that yellow thing up in your favour is how the game determines that you win, after all. However, in 'Fall of the Samurai', and I assume other blackpowder-based Total War games, cannons are vastly misjudged in their killing potential and the maps are so delightfully crooked that any hill you deploy on and every clean line of sight can throw off the predictions immensly. It might sound like the Legend is contradicting himself halfway through a video, but what he means is that we, the players, should not be intimidated by the balance bar. It lies to us :) Cheers fellas!
@@Nadaters Why did soldiers stand in a straight line? The line was considered the fundamental battle formation as it allowed for the largest deployment of firepower. This battle looks epic. It's still mindblowin what they were able to achieve with this game and it's equally mindblowing they decided to not develop on this and instead go into fantasy strategy with warhammer and fps with hyenas. They had here a proper mid to late 19th century combat. They could have explored the American Civil War, colonisation of Africa, Europe nation-building wars of the period, and many more...
@tahahadada1936 Yesterday I installed FotS and Rome 2. Played a wee bit of both, and something that was really disappointing is how similar all the factions play compared to Warhammer. In Warhammer you really play at your specific strengths and try to cover your weaknesses. That said I love FotS and Shogun 2. Amazing games. :)
An interesting note about terrain is the difference between a plane and a changing gradient. In this battle, for much of it, some units are not firing, mostly because they are blocked by another unit despite being on a hill. It's because the hill gradient was largely constant, effectively becoming a flat plane so the angle of fire was still being drawn through units instead of over them. It's much better to place your infantry around the bottom of a hill, with lines moving higher up than at the top of the hill with lines getting lower. From the top of the hill, there may not be range to the change in gradient to allow your rearmost units to fire. But from the bottom of the hill, it's almost guaranteed. But the interesting thing is that it means that hills aren't always the best. A ditch can be absolutely amazing, letting units on a flat plane fire over one another, or even putting a melee unit in the ditch in front of your guns to prevent a melee charge. A ditch with a ridge behind is even better, letting you have 3 sets of units firing into 1 with proper placement.
Okay, guard mode looks broken with kneel fire. In an earlier video I was like "omg put them on guard mode", but apparently it doesnt seem to work. Thats very odd
I don't get the AI. 9:45 starts a nice surround. 10:48 nope - lets blob up and build a line, that always works. 23 years since shogun 1 and still stupid in wh3.

Damn, my man chose Saga and went with 2 Parrot Guns. Another 2 would decimate that jumpscare army reinforcements in no time seeing as Saga gets a hefty bonus for artillery (if I recall, Saga gets the lovely Accuracy bonus for their artillery).
Yeah, this seems like a first campaign. It's really easy to have optimal recruitment in Shogun 2, as in blacksmith/firing range bonuses on all your units. Once you're at the point where you've hit realm divide and are using RIS infantry you really shouldn't be losing units ever anyway, so there's no need to panic recruit from a buddhist temple province. Just build up 5 doomstacks or so and steamroll the map.
@@PipMan1101 I agree with the Optimal Recruitment part. Also, the part that I really like when it comes to Balancing is that most - if not all - units in FOTS have their recruitment price increased since it's a lot easier to make money compared to base Shogun 2, especially gunpowder units. Buddhist Temple bonuses is useful if your army is mainly - or only - composed of "traditional" units supplemented by 2-4 artilleries, since that Buddhist Temple bonuses can make your melee units survive longer at getting shot before they break - and melee units are powerhouses in FOTS if they manage to get into your firing line (looking at you Shogutai).

Correct artillery gameplay: find the biggest hill for the biggest guns and guard them with all the smaller guns while letting the big guns do their job. Result: record kill counts!
Regarding artillery in 14:50, one time in med 2 at a bridge battle i placed my artillery one in front of the other. And the one behind was just shooting the "operators" of the one in front. So if they were trying to shoot, maybe that happened.
I had a siege against three fullstack armies in vanilla shogun. I replayed it about ten times, although I managed to defend the castle the first time. But it was necessary to cut out the retreating enemies, otherwise my army would not have survived another such massacre 🙂
