  • When you're pregnant, you hope for a healthy baby, maybe even secretly wish for a specific gender. But no one ever prepares for the possibility that your child might grow up to be a sociopath. A sociopath you fear will harm themselves and others.
Mima has spent her life trying to break the cycle of generational trauma. But her second-born daughter has struggled with severe mental illness since childhood. The warning signs were there early, but nothing could have prepared Mima for what was to come.
We look into Mima’s world; born to addicts, raised around violence, and a teen mum. Despite her efforts, a series of heartbreaking events has led her to an impossible choice: handing her daughter over to the state. Mima is exhausted, she's desperate and she's been let down by the system time and time again.
Trigger Warning: This episode contains discussions of substance abuse, violence, sexual assault, suicide, and racial slurs. Please listen with care.

As a child of a parent who was mentally unwell, the best thing you could’ve did for your children was be honest.
helping your middle child to see that she needed help for her issue was better than trying to hide which she’s doing it’s confusing.
I think a lot of parents call themselves protecting their kids by not informing them, but you’re doing more harm. You’re trying to keep a secret that is not supposed to keep and that’s the only way families can work together
as a black woman hearing I fully understand, but I was able to show up for my parent in a different way because I was informed.
I was also able to fully protect myself as a child because I was informed giving your children, the equipment of education surrounding what’s going on with them in their house is important no matter their age that’s why we teach children about healthy touches because children are more likely to be touched When they are not educated on it. Thank you for sharing your story.
the biggest denominator I hear often time is that we’re not honest with everybody mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of and when you say somebody is sick and like oh they have a cold they have is really disrespectful to people that have mental illness because you make them seem like something is wrong with them.
if a illness is a illness then you should be able to explain it to your child without adding extra connotation on it. I would never say shame for mental health illness.

This mother is an absolute warrior, our mental health system is broken, the fact this young girl isn't able to get the support she needs is absolutely abhorrent, this mother is twisting herself inside out to back her baby , help her baby , protect her baby and she is met with nothing but dead ends , I can't even imagine how this family feels. Mima you are the absolute embodiment of a mother, sending you so much love and strength ❤

My heart goes out to you Mima! What a beautiful person you are inside and out.
My daughter’s biological father, though he was not so fortunate to have a mother like you, seems to have faced all the same issues your daughter has and last I heard just got out of his 3rd prison sentence.. I see many similarities in my young daughter that you mention of yours and I have to say, knowing how genetics work, it’s very eye opening. I hope we don’t go through the same things in the future. However, this has helped me understand how to navigate if these things were to come about.. THANK YOU so much for sharing your story!❤ much love, xoxo

I’m so sorry you’re going through this, I can’t imagine the stress you’re dealing with and that you’ve had no help from anyone. The system is so failed. You’re such a strong women. I know this might sound silly and don’t take my advice cause Im not a doctor, I have no idea… but the more I listened the more I kept thinking… has she ever had her hormone levels checked and any deficiency looked at. Hormone Imbalances and severe deficiencies in the body can cause anxiety, depression, anger..even psychosis. It can really destroy people’s minds and how the body functions and works properly. It just crossed my mind when you said you noticed a change at 8 years old, even though that’s very young things in the body can start to change at that age as they head towards puberty. Anyways it was just a thought as I feel hormone imbalances and vitamin, minerals deficiency can play a huge part in how a person functions ❤

Mima, I don't know if this is something for you, but hearing your story and the generational stuff that I recognize so much in, maybe you can watch the interview on the John Cooper show with Laura Whitworth.
I've started doing sessions with her myself, as a person in survival mode and was always trying to prevent and do the right thing, and stuff just keeps happening.
It might sound a bit different than we're used to, but after all my attempts to figure stuff out, this feels the closesed to how things work.
I wish you all the best.
I have very much respect for you.
And i'm so sorry for what you've been through and going through💚

If she ever sees this video it’s, not going to help her. Hearing her mother say she doesn’t like her probably won’t help her either. Seems like the focus is on how “bad” she is, rather than the fact she is likely suffering deeply emotionally. Try to focus on the good things about her, and focus on her stregnths.
