12) A friend of mine told me about their now-16yo cousin who is trans. The parents had suspected it for a few years from the time they were VERY young, and when they were 8-9 the parents gently asked them, "Do you feel like you're a boy trapped in a girl's body?"
He immediately yelled "YES!!!!" like it was the biggest relief in the _world_ that somebody understood what he was feeling and was able to put it into words for him.
His parents have been incredibly supportive ever since, first letting him make the social transitions he wanted to make in his hair and clothes before making sure they got him into a good therapist to be formally diagnosed with gender dysphoria to open the medical doors that needed to be opened for him. They even moved to the other side of the state to get him to a more "accepting" city where he would be safer and happier. He's _thriving_ now, and I find that _unspeakably_ wholesome.
so sad that "Do you feel like you're a boy trapped in a girl's body?" is how parents, school, even the supposedly gay community nowadays have been indoctrinating gay children to understand themselves. Trans the gay away is the new pray the gay away. Cant believe the liberals have unwittingly practice gay conversion therapy on gays under the pretenses of supporting trans rights.

When I told my dad that I was lesbian he said “cool! So I don’t need to worry about guys sneaking in the house!” And then he remembered that my sister is straight 😂

The book Prayers for Bobby" is a even harder to read. I cried so much from the book

I think my favourite coming out scene isn't an official traditional coming out scene, but I love when Elio and his father speak together towards the end of Call Me By Your Name. Nothing official needed to be said but his father knew and his father was caring and tender towards Elio's feelings and validated what was even confusing and painful for Elio at times. Not to mention the monologue he gives Elio is ABSOLUTELY incredible!

One of my favorite moments in The Owl House (2020-2023) is when Luz Noceda ""Comes out" to Eda and King that's she have feeling for Amity. The other moments is when Luz presents her video on her laptop to her mom, Camilla, to let her know that's she is bisexual and introduced her to her girlfriend, Amity.
The Owl House(2020-2023) is one of my favorite LGBTQ Representative series.

My favourite coming out scene is in the film 'Pride' where Bill Nighy and Imelda Staunton are sat making sandwiches in South Wales for striking miners during their strike in 1984 and he very sheepishly comes out to her. Her response is just a very simple, " I know. " and then he goes on to ask her how long she's known and she replies, " Well, I don't know about anyone else but I've known since about 1969. " and he just looks at her with amazement in his eyes and they continue doing what they're doing.
It's a classic and very subtle way for anyone to come out to anyone else especially with the timescale involved and it shows that friendship and support is there in the most unlikely and surprising places, doesn't i? The film 'Pride' itself is one of my favourites and especially worth a watch for anyone who hasn't seen it. It's especially relevant this month in the U.S.A. with it being their 'Pride Month' although here in the U.K. we don't celebrate it here in the month of June - it's far too restrictive for us to do that especially when you consider that we have different Pride parades throughout the summer months and the celebrations are ongoing really. It's just too bad that people can't be like that all year round, isn't it? 👍😁👍🏳🌈🏳⚧🇬🇧

The lead from Alex Strangelove, Daniel Doheny, was a classmate of mine at high school in Vancouver BC. Seeing him do this role filled me with so much pride (pun unintended) because it was amazing to see how far he had come as an actor.

I am so glad that you included In and Out. I love this movie and watch it often. I am straight, but I love the storyline of this movie, the fact that others were suspicious of Howard but he didn't realise it himself.....until his wedding. Great movie with a great cast and wonderful script.

Happy Pride! It's interesting watching this and reflecting on the 90s. At the time, it felt like homosexuality was so hidden that we had to seek out gay cinema, but looking back, we had such great gems and so many of them; like many mentioned in this video. A few not mentioned that I enjoyed were Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss, All Over Me, Better Than Chocolate, The Crying Game, Stonewall, Relax... It's Just Sex, Jeffrey, and Get Real. Two more recent great examples are The Inspection and Spoiler Alert.
Happy Pride Month. Watching "Kissing Jessica Stein" and the titular scene with Tovah Feldshuh, makes me cry every time. Tovah brings such bravery and strength and love for her daughter, ugh! crying again!!!

Those three Love, Simon moments were just everything. The one with his Mom wasn't even part of the script. But Jennifer who played his Mom insisted they have am moment and I "think" she even wrote the scene. Word has it it got all those on set really emotional. How did you miss the Love Victor moments? So many shows out there to pick.
That scene -- THAT ONE scene -- where Simon's mother tells him he can finally exhale and "be more YOU than you've been in a very long time" is the very zenith of possible reactions a parent can have to a child's coming out. It is an extraordinary scene, and it might never be surpassed in film. In the theaters where I saw "Love, Simon" (yes, more than.once), you could hear a pin drop during that scene. The audience was starkly quiet, holding its breath, until after the scene was over when people started weeping. I will never forget it.
Great selection of scenes. Latter Days and Love, Simon get me every time. The series Heartstopper has a few coming out scenes, but when Nick comes out to his mom that he's Bi, is one of my favorites. In the movie SAVED! when Dean comes out to Mary while they're underwater in the pool, is a good one too. I love that a lot of movies/shows have LGBTQ representation, just wish these were available when I was a wee lad in the 70s.

Honestly yeah Simon’s coming out moment was great. I just wish I could say the same for his first kiss with Bram, because it was waaaay better in the book. I still love the movie so much because of how relatable it is and how real it portrays the internal struggle of sexuality can be, despite having the most amazing family who you know would accept you. I cry every time I see it 😭😭😭 I wish my family had been accepting of me, and even 5 years later they still can’t say my name or use the right pronouns. Some people really don’t know how blessed and lucky they are to have supportive family and friends.
YES! Simon and his parents - together and separately - leaves me in tears EVERY TIME!
I came out to my father as a lesbian at 13yrs old, It was hard and confusing for me as i went through many labels trying to find who i was, I told him over text at school and waited what felt like forever for his response, Making my cry in the middle of science knowing my father knew and loved me no matter what, Getting the support no matter who from feels so warm. sweet and amazing, Take you're time you will get through it!!!

That's how it would be if the parents didn't go to their churches, temples, synagogues and mosques and hear the pastors, priests, rabbis and imams tell them to hate their children.
Latter Days is absolutely one of my favourite movies. I can never watch this movie and not cry at the end.

Wow, you have created the best list of LGBTQ coming out movies I’ve ever seen. You included many of my all-time favorite movies with LGBTQ characters. I was especially pleased that you included the original “Edge of Seventeen” film. It angers me that another, more recent movie, stole that name. “Edge” really sets the template for many other high school coming out movies. “Alex Strangelove,” for instance, contains some similar plot threads.
I would also include Patrick coming out to his parents in Schitt's Creek....so wonderful.
10 always gets me, since it was inspired by a real event: Tom Hanks thanked two of his teachers when he won the Oscar for "Philadelphia" and one of them was open but not fully public, and Paul Rudnick then had the idea "What if...?" Even with its quirks, it's still a wonderfully fun movie to watch.

OMG, Brokeback Mountain was heart-wrenching. But was there a coming out? It seemed like they were in the closet to everyone, including their wives, but themselves.

I went in a date with a guy I was really into. We went to see Love, Simon and I remember thinking how much I wished we had a movie like this when I was 17 and questioning my sexuality.

They did a spoof of the coming-out scene of the movie Edge of 17 with the same actress playing the mom in another film called Another gay movie. The character Nico comes out to his mother saying I like guys. His mother is sitting at the Piano she turns around with that same serious look and says Duh!!!! I busted laughing, so funny.

Unfortunately I still have this ordeal to face at some point with my parents.
Oddly regretting not doing it a lot earlier.
Dreading doing it in the future.
Realised I was gay at age 12 or 13, denied it and tried to make myself straight until I was 18, and throughout the years have hated myself since.
So many people have asked me over the years if im gay including my parents but I closed those doors.
I have many friends that know and many who don't. And a couple of friends I told, who completely forgot 😂 😂
But the thought of telling my parents is a daily fear that haunts me every day at age 24
I'm so sorry for the emotional struggle you are going through. First of all, take a few deep breaths to calm yourself, and then realize that you don't EVER need to come out to your parents if you don't want to. If it pains you to even contemplate doing so, then don't do it. They -- nor anyone else -- have any "right" to know this personal information about you. It is a privilege to share such deeply personal information with another.
Next, consider if it is possible that they already know. Maybe someone else who knows this information about you shared it with them. Or maybe they just have "always known" since you were a child; you said your parents have directly asked you the question before. Maybe they've been waiting for you to tell them when you are ready.
Ask yourself WHY you are hesitant to reveal this part of your life to them. Do you fear they will reject you? Do you fear that your relationship with them will change irrevocably once they know this information? Those are the 2 main reasons, but there are others.
Ultimately, a person "comes out" for one's OWN reasons, not because the recipient has any "right" to know it or any "need" to know it. Ultimately (unless you are outed), it is your decision to make whether (and with whom) you want to share this personal information. Or not.

My friend came out to me before she came out to her parents. I was happy for her honesty, but heart broken she couldn't tell her parents. After she moved in with her girlfriend. She came out to them. They told her she was dead to them. They called me pissed that I kept that secret. I laughed at them. I said "Now that she is an adult and doesn't need you. She can be happy. Shame on you both." Years later her mother came around and is part of her life, Afer her husband died. I'm thinking the father was the source of the homophobia.

I love the fact, I can proudly say out loud, I love being a gay black bottom male. Bc of how hostile ppl act to our community, and making me feel insecure about my sexuality, it is something when I was younger, I never thought I would feel comfortable saying out loud.
To those having trouble accepting who u are, I am here to let u know it gets better over time, and surround yourself with those who accept you, bc that helps with ur confidence. Oh I agree! Olivia Coleman as his mother was absolutely extraordinary (as she is in everything she does). It brings you to tears. In fact, Nick's coming out speech to her was so dramatically moving that Olivia herself broke down into tears several times during rehearsals -- which you can see in outtakes on TH-cam.

Haven’t yet watched the video (which I definitely will) but I’m hoping that some day soon, maybe not next gen but two down the line - “coming out” will no longer be an issue, anymore than telling your parents “I’m straight“ which in my experience ppl don’t do. Trans kids or adults will have to speak out bc of the transition & surgery, etc. (not in a negative way, simply bc of nec’ry physical & gender changes) but on the whole, ppl speaking abt their sexuality will have more to do w simply finding compatible partners. I could of course be completely wrong, but I got the impression my nephew said something to my sister maybe a yr ago just so she would stop pointing out how cute certain girls were in his class. I think it just got irritating. But - to him - at either 12, 13? I can’t quite remember, it wasn’t a big deal, in the same way as it was, for ex., in the show Glee. Of course, things are likely dif in dif parts of the country, but in the Northeast, it seems like kids are more accepting and don’t think much about sexual orientation other than to properly address their friends. THAT’S what I’m hoping will occur…
Back then it was a hard time to come out as gay, It's super easy today. We have pride for a reason remember stonewall. The new gen are idiots and make the lgbt a joke.
