You can see Robin is struggling so hard. She knows she's going to break Steve's heart, but she has to tell him the truth because she really loves him and knows he deserves honesty. And Steve handles the situation sooo brilliantly. This scene is so touching, sad and relieving at the same time. Masterpiece.
I love how instead of being digusted or upset he was rejected, he just went, "Really? You can do better than her." At least to me it shoes how much they mean to each other
@@315._k7 today yeah, but this show isn’t set in modern day. This season is set in 1985, and it would be totally normal and accepted to ghost her and never talk to her again cause she’s gay. Do I think it’s right? No, of course not, but that’s the truth.
It just goes to show how much fighting monsters and becoming the official babysitter to a group of preteens can really alter your whole personality for the better!💖😊
@@stinkyassclown4602 What's funnier is that Steve's development was an accident, since both he and Dustin's plotlines were going nowhere, they just made them cross paths with each other.
Ahal1 lol I started to watch the whole show again after the last episode and omg, it’s crazy how well this show represents character development. I love how at they’re selfish teens who then go through traumatic experiences that in, different ways, teach them that they need to be better people. It’s such and awesome show 🤣
the absolute hurt you can see in robin's eyes when she realizes that steve likes her is so heartbreaking. you can tell that their friendship means so much to her and she's terrified that by rejecting him she'll ruin it. that's what makes this show and the characters so relatable and loved, because i think we all go through that at some point.
yes but the character gets no wins ... from the ladiesmagnet degraded to a joke in costume... i would have wished hed get a girl.. or at least more respect from his surroundings. This scene was like one more punch in the stomach of this already unlucky chracter. Hes the most punished character in this series by far,, his downfall undeserved.
@@bigboulder I don't think this was any kind of gut punch for Steve. His crush is unrequited, sure, but he obtains a best friend which is in many ways what he needed as a character. It also directly shows character growth compared to how he was dealing with rejection in the first season. I would expect him to fully transition into a father/big brother figure in the fourth season. I suspect there might be a romantic subplot for him as well
@@jeebe393 a matter of opinion..but i would guess that most people would prefer to have a partner in life..and for steves character..thats definately his goal.
The part where Steve is describing his crush and Robin immediately knew he was talking about her and the way she got frustrated and sad knowing that she'll break his heart is such an emotional scene 🥺
I thinks she's also afraid for herself that he'll end their friendship and tell other people what she said. I was around in the 80s and let me tell you that coming out as a Lesbian in a small Midwestern city would have been a tough journey.
its so amazing because you can tell she loves him and is taken aback by how sweetly he talks about her, but knowing she will never love him romantically
I love how they framed this scene, especially the first half. They're directly facing each other but the toilet partition provides a divide that lets them both express their emotions perfectly: Steve's rising sincerity and Robin's crestfallen despair. It was so bold and unexpected to *NOT* have them end up together (what a swerve) but geez do I love how it developed both of their character's even more.
@@lottegeldof4987 It's about both of them and Steve is the character we've know longer so his development as a person in this moment is just as surprising as Robin's bravery for opening up and making herself vulnerable during such an unsupportive decade. STOP TELLING PEOPLE HOW TO FEEL. Freaking gatekeepers, I swear...
I love how when Steve realises Robin is gay, he just carries on talking with her instead of being upset she doesn't like him back. Instead of teasing her being gay, he teases her choice in women. And this is the same guy who made a homophobic slur in S1
Agent Z46 yes, yes it would, you can’t expect them to naturally grow feelings for you and then getting mad at them is probably the douchiest (wow what a word) thing to do
the way robin just desperately looks to steve with water in her eyes after he says “but she’s a girl” is heartbreaking, but the soft “oh” he says after he realizes is so kind and understanding. him being supportive of her just is another clarification that steve harrington is an angel among men
I love how instead of Steve being like "WHAT, YOU'RE GAY?!?" he's just like "Oh Robin, we have to talk about your taste in women. Cuz you can do so much better."
I know. Its almost like in that moment she wanted to be attracted to him so that she wouldn't lose him. Because she does love him...just not romantically. That actress is amazing. Her face conveys all those emotions.
Beautifully written and acted scene. Maya Hawke is sensational, and Joe Keery, with a mix of tenderness and humour, perfectly portrays just how far Steve's character has come since the first season.
@HammerBann If you do not understand that obsession is not a singular synonym for attraction then you have no business critiquing anyone else's writing. The writers successfully misdirected you and you're blaming them for bad writing. That's it. End of story.
Robin: *Coming out as a lesbian* Steve: Cool Robin: Theres no problems? Steve: Yeah, your taste. I love Steves character. Homophobia was so bad in the '80s and Steve just shrugs it off and has no problem.
especially when you remember how Steve was in S1, his character development of going from homophobic prom king pretty boy dating the most perfect girl in school to bisexual mum of six with a crush on the metalhead outcast and whose best friend is a lesbian is one of the best in TV history
Ook: *coming out as a homersexual in 8000 B.C.E* gnak: *reaches for sharpened bone club* Ook: **grunt** problem? gnak: *THWACK* Ook: *silence* i HATE gnak. 1:32 Maya Hawke’s performance is so good. You can tell she appreciates the fact that Steve likes her, but it hurts her too because she realizes she has to tell him she’s gay.
@@mugi8833 Gay is also used as an umbrella term for anyone liking the same gender as themselves. So, yes, it applies to girls as well. I hope this could clear up the confusion :)
Steve had the best character development of all time. From douchebag popular jock who only cared about himself to being a single mum who accepts people for who they are.
Robin's emotions are joyfully explored in this scene, but it's worth saying that this is also a turning point for Steve. I think he really shows his maturity in this moment. Instead of being distraught by Robin's rejection, he digests it and lets it wash right over him. Their friendship outweighs any fleeting romantic disappointment. He embraces it for what it is, accepting and adapting like an emotionally intelligent adult. It's like he's really, finally left high school behind. Being chased by psychic monsters and secret agents surely gives you perspective on what's important in life.
Preach! And what makes it even better is that the reason why he forced himself to get over the rejection so fast is because he could see in how much distress she was - scared that only he will stop being friends with her, but also that he could go into some sort of homophobic freakout and start insulting her, maybe even attack her, or that he could tell everyone and turn her into a total social outcast for the whole Hawkins. Sad as it is, this is a small american town in the 80's after all.
Elena S M CANONICO I think the same thing might happen to Will, it was hinted he was gay earlier in the season by Mike saying “It’s not my fault you don’t like girls.” But I’m not sure about thsi
I love how they didn’t make her being gay her whole personality, and just part of it. They wrote it so well. I also love how they didn’t use the stereotype of the boy-girl friendship turning into romance
Stranger Things is really good at breaking stereotypes and that's one of the reasons I like it. Like back in season 1 I thought Hopper was going to be one of those adults who doesn't listen to the kids at all and thinks they are just making up all the stuff so that the kids have no choice but to solve the mystery by themselves. Instead Hopper became one of the main characters who also tries his hardest to solve the mystery and that was definitely a good thing.
Stereotype? Relationships can only start one of two ways: boy and girl meet and immediately start dating or they become friends and then start dating. I think you mean rom-com trope.
the writers actually did plan to make robin and steve a couple, but the actors didn't feel it so they workshopped this scene and the producers ended up liking it so much that none of it was cut
Honestly as I was watching this the first time, I thought that this was going to be a love confession scene and I was just like... :/ this feels so cheesey and cliché?? But okay ig, they wouldn't be an awful pair. Soooo happy they did this instead, also was lowkey hilarious watching my parents get all uncomfortable bc of unexpected gay.
as a lesbian, i relate to Robin so much in this scene. i could just feel the pain in her chest, knowing that she can’t possibly feel the same way and wishing they could’ve just stayed best friends. i wish i had a friend like steve, because most of the times this happened to me, they didn’t take it nearly as well. especially since steve was born in the 60’s, it’s amazing how kind and accepting he is in comparison to people i know who were born in the 2000’s
people can so beautiful and lovable until they think theres something wrong w you and they start acting insane to the point you don't know them anymore
@@rhysstanley7387 I think it depends on the person Like, Steve seems like the kind of person who would really accept her and love her anyway, or at least, Steve from season 3-4 and maybe 2 (I don't think the Steve from season 1 would be this open and great) It's a really rare thing probably between people of that eras, but he seems the exception Like now there are people who are like this, so more open and who don't find anything wrong with it and people who find it a taboo or something terrible (I hope there aren't grammar mistakes here, I'm not a native speaker so sorry in advance in case I made any)
@City Beautiful Adventures yeah that thing wasn't that great of him... Even though it was probably his way to say "stay safe" A very bad way to say "stay safe" but still a way Luckily they didn't kill him before... The new Steve is one of the best characters ever and I'm really happy they made him grow up like that
I love her performance in this, especially the end. Yeah, she's kidding around, but underneath she's so relieved that nothing has changed between her and her friend.
Her laughter to his jokes felt to me, on top of him being funny, like a catharsis for her, like she was so relieved she was accepted and they could still be besties, and possibly even relief beyond just Steve, as he may well be the first person in her life who knows. So the moment is doubly cathartic because for the first time in her life, she's unburdened from this very personal secret that probably made her feel afraid and lonely and self conscious. This scene is everything, and to me, the best scene of the season, and a definite contender for best of the entire series. I'm so excited for Maya Hawke. The girl's gonna be huge - famous parents or not. Terrific performance.
@@jonathanguito1168 I've never even thought of the possibilty that he might be the first person she came out to, interesting thought, that this moment affects not just their friendship but her life from that moment forward. She expresses so much with a few looks and laughs. I'm also excited to see her in more things from now on.
That soft "Steve" after he says Tammy Thompson's a girl has me in shambles. She was so terrified of what he would say, that he would reject her and she'd lose her friend, ugh. Great acting.
Steve’s reaction seems pretty spot on for the time this takes place. You can kinda tell that he either has never met a gay person or perhaps he at one point bullied one back when he was a douche. His reaction is a mix of surprise, confusion but also acceptance
Not only that, but he makes fun of who she crushes on and not her, It's like, he's still the Steve we love, he's just come further in a good way without changing completely
it also shows that when someone makes the argument of "Well, he was just a product of his time" to explain away homophobia or other bad stuff, it's just utter bullshit. Steve, who started out as a vapid '80s douchebag, nonetheless has a good heart, which is something that transcends the societal hang-ups of any era.
@@lauristonbrewster9097 I can't be more disagree with you, you have described Steve perfectly! And I wanna give all my respect to Duffer brothers for all the work they put in stranger things! It's really a good thing for people who watch the show! :)

@@jltplease And...? Movies obviously don't reflect the views of all human beings. It's entirely possible and not "2020 views" that there were accepting people in the 80s
To me the best part isn’t even that she came out and he’s cool with it. It’s that he poured his heart out to her, basically confessing his love, and then she revealed that not only does she not feel that way about him; she never will - never CAN, even - and he not only accepts it; he immediately starts joking with her like he didn’t just get his heart stomped on (again).
Media when male and female are hinting to romantic interest: haha no they're platonic, in fact the woman is gay and the guy is a soy drinking beta male so he continues his friendship with her Media when male and male have a platonic friendship: they are GAY and will express it in a GAY shy timid way. And then we will introduce homophobic characters that end up becoming GAY and joining a monkeypox orgy with the two GAY men Tldr; Hollywood sexualizes male platonic friendships and platonizes male-female relations.
Sort of reminds me of Degrassi when Marco comes out to Spinner and assures him he won't hit on him because he doesn't find Spinner attractive anyway. Spinner, despite being straight, is hugely offended by that comment. "Whaddaya mean I'm not attractive?!"
The way Robin cares about having to reject Steve romantically, the way Steve reacts when he is rejected but quickly realises Robin is vulnerable and and puts her at ease with a joke about her crush...this whole scene is prime. Two people becoming genuine best friends once they fully understood one another. Also, Steve's heart wasn't broken, it was not love, love is deeper and takes longer than a summer in an ice cream place. Steve really liked her and was romantically rejected. It can still hurt but if you've emotional intelligence you can process that pretty quickly. Steve processed that he wasn't rejected as a person, as a friend, just as a romantic partner. It's that emotional intelligence that allowed Steve to instantly realise the person he cares about is isolated and vulnerable by her admission to him and quickly put her at ease. She was also scared of losing him as a friend. The way the chords of the music slowly builds again the second he jokes about Tammy mirrors Robin's emotional state as it too slowly builds up again once she realises Steve accepted her for who she is. It's such a powerful scene.
Everything about this scene is just so authentic and likable, Season 3 was all great but Robin and Steve were absolutely the standout. Joe Keery and Maya Hawke should be in everything.
Indeed, I'm glad that they didn't have Steve and Robin hook up, as you might expect in stories like this. Instead, they are still able to maintain a strong friendship after their adventures. Yay for subverting expectations!😀 #scooptroopforlife
@@trinaq nah this was a blow to Steve. Damn a girl who was baiting you the whole time saying things like I wish you knew me and making him think she liked him was messed up. I think in reality guys would feel disappointed. I feel bad for Steve as once again shot down
I feel like people give a lot of credit to Steve for not being homophobic and obviously he deserves that credit, but he also deserves credit because he literally fell in love with Robin and could have been mad or sad for a longer time, or like telling her "okay I need some time to get over you" but he took the hit so well and never got angry at her for not being attracted to him or something idk I felt like somebody should mention it
I remember in season one, the time where he was at first to be thought of the worst character, he insulted Jonathan by saying he mistook him for a queer. Now he completely accepts his best friend as gay. Goddamn this is another reason to love Steve’s character development
You're not wrong though I think it's the best type of letdown. It's one thing for a crush to say they just aren't into men but it hits harder when they are into men but not into YOU. That being said it's still a beautiful scene and Itotally agree with your premise.
He was like that with Nancy too in a way, when he fully realized and accepted that she doesn't love him anymore. That little scene in s2 after Nancy and Jonathan slept together during their trip and when they met up with Steve again, he knew that things had changed. And instead of making Nancy feel bad about her kinda cheating on him (they hadn't officially broken up) he reassures her that "it's okay". And he looks and sounds like he absolutely means it. I respect that a lot about him, that he takes rejection in such an accepting way, even though it must hurt him, but he still cares about this person (Nancy and Robin) so much and does everything to make them not feel bad about it. I just really love Steve.
Yeah not just not being homophobic but also not having that toxic attitude after being rejected a lot of women are scared of. But I get it he wasn't interested in her until they were friends, he didn't go in to that relationship with that agenda of becoming her boyfriend and getting "friend zoned."
I love the last part where they’re laughing and the music just turns up because they are _friends._ I love this scene because at the end of the day they’re still friends.
1:42 That look breaks my heart. It’s not the look of “Oh man, I need to reject this guy” it’s the look of “Oh no, I need to tell this guy something that might make him never like or respect me again.”
In a series full of horror this was one of the most beautiful scenes. Authentic, believable, brilliantly acted. This made me cry for all the right reasons.
@Derek Fisher It's also not natural to wear glasses, dye hair, use the restroom anywhere but the ground, eat processed foods, get divorced, or even wear braces. But I guess we just pick and choose huh?
The fact that Robin knows Steve's talking about her when he starts describing his 'crush' and starts crying because she could never love Steve the way he did and doesnt want to break his heart And the way she's relieved when Steve starts making fun of her choice in women Maya Hawke is such a great actor
I feel like if S4 is hypocritically 10 episodes, we're gonna see a bunch of scenes of them hanging out, watching movies, and obviously trying to score at the video store
Just goes to show that good-hearted people can be corrupted by their asshole friends. That was pretty much a significant reason why he was a jerk in S1 - his friend group was a bunch of asshats, and that's how he was too. Thankfully, he learned.
As a straight dude with a really close female friend who's gay, Robin and Steve's friendship was the best part of season 3 and super relatable. Edit: This has aged kinda poorly because I've realised I'm bi but I still platonically love my friend so fuck it.

Mine too, the look on his face as he tries to process the information, and when he states "But Tammy Thompson's a girl", sees Robin's "Well, duh" expression, before he finally grasps what she's implying, really adds a moment of well needed hilarity to an otherwise serious situation!😅
yes you can tell she was scared of his reaction, but then she was really happy he accepted her for who she is. Steve is the best character and he deserves happiness
And how risky it is for her to come out to the former school's resident douchebag in the 80s. Huge leap of faith, he could have ruined her life the next day.
We need a Robin & Steve spin off that's just a workplace buddy comedy where they get fired at the end of every season and have to start a completely different job at the start of the next one.
I felt bad for the both of them, but they handled it well. Robin knowing she was the attention of Steve’s affection then having to let him know how she truly felt and Steve not having the best of luck with girls the entire season and when he finally thinks he found the one then it’s revealed that she likes girls and he has no chance, but in the heat of the moment they joke as friends. It’s a truly emotional scene in my eyes for the both of them.
RIGHT?!?!??? I’ve never seen that so realistically portrayed on screen. Infact, I don’t think I’ve ever seen it PERIOD! But I’ve been through it so many times. So many guys who are about to ask me out and I just have that “oh fuck” moment like “I’m about to crush this poor boy’s soul”
@@shaybrown7355 Yeah, I completely agree. There is sometimes where we just have to accept things and people for how they are, no matter how hard we fall for them. I’m excited to see how they continue Steve and Robin’s storyline, I just hope that both of them are able to get their happy endings for season 4. Who truly knows, maybe Robin and Steve can help each other get girlfriends? I’d love to see that honestly, or Steve coming to grapple with his feelings for Robin, but still being there for her as a best friend even though he feels more attached to her than just as a friend.
That's how you reveal a gay character, by waiting till the show is released. Not going on the internet saying, "say hello to the first bona-fide openly gay character of the show!". Stranger Things did it right.
@Matheus E You sure? I didn’t sense any real implications of her being a lesbian at all. Not like she should’ve worn a sign on her chest exclaiming her sexuality, but I honestly feel like the character would’ve remained relatively the same if she was straight. It’s not a bad thing that they added an admittedly “gay” character to the roster, but I feel that they should’ve done it in a way that would actually impact/explain the decisions she makes over the course of the show, not just so that she could turn down Steve. Hopefully in the fourth season they’ll actually build upon her sexuality and properly implement it into her character, but I just feel like the way the “big reveal” happened could’ve been better.
@@swissidol8403 The way i see it, it changed her and the relationship she had with Steve. For example, it shows the struggle she had with her sexuality possibly affecting her friendship with Steve, because he could judge her or being so heartbroken. Sure, she didnt need to be gay for the Steve rejection thing to work, but i think it was a clever way to do it. I mean, Nancy already dumped Steve cause he wasnt her type, if the same happened to Robin, it would be kinda boring. I also think it was meaningful to her, because it adds to her personality. The whole season i thought she liked to tease and mock Steve in a way of drawing his attention to her, kinda like "notice me" way. So it works like a semi plot twist, if you will. And yeah, it wasnt explored a lot, but it didnt needed to be. Shes a secondary character on a pretty large roster, and sexuality is far from the main focus of the plot.
Matheus E remember that a certain character being gay doesn’t _have_ to be meaningful or add depth. They can just be. It’s called existing. Yet so many ppl rage when it happens

I’ll be honest, I haven’t watched a single episode of this show, but I find myself coming back to this video and watching it whenever I need to cry. As a lesbian, this is probably the most genuine coming out scene I have ever seen, it’s so goddamn beautiful
It may well be the best scene in the entire series. I just adore this scene. I may not be queer personally, but several of my friend are, so I can empathize. I've also just struggled with any feeling of acceptance, so I can identify on that level as well. May we ALL wind up with friends as accepting as Steve in this scene.
It's cuz he's trying to get rid of the tension. Obviously its really weird for him but since they are friends he doesnt really want to make things awkward since he ya know said he liked her. So he throws some jokes in the mix. Because he is amazing, poor steve :(
@@svenr.3803 I think it's a little bit of both. On the one hand, Steve has come such a long way from the arrogant, judgemental d-bag he was in season 1, so it is totally in character that he would be so accepting of Robin regardless of her sexuality or the fact that she didn't reciprocate his romantic feelings for her. On the other hand, he probably understands on some level that coming out to someone (especially back then in middle America) is / was a pretty big deal, and ripping on her choice of crush is his way of showing that nothing has changed between them. Without explicitly saying so Steve is showing Robin that he accepts and supports her, because that's what friends do.

steve is probably one the most likable characters ever and it’s totally by accident since the writers initially planned to kill him off in the first season (so glad they didn’t)
Poor Steve gets his ass handed to him literally every season. Like even when he wins a fight and we are so proud of him, something bigger comes along and just. Fucks. Him. Up. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
as much as i love that idea i highly doubt steve would go that far out of his way to take the kids to see will and eleven and go hang out with jonathan lol and he isnt as close with will or eleven as he is with the other kids (see season 2) so i really dont see this happening
The way Robin goes when she realises he’s in love with her makes me so sad because she knows that she’ll have to hurt him and she doesn’t want to do that
Totally, the moment where Robin huddles into herself because she knows that Steve deserves to know the truth, but this being the mid 1980's, she's nervous as to what his reaction will be, and that he won't want to be associated with her anymore. Maya's acting really sells this scene!❤😀
Best outcome for both of them. Steve, needs another solid friend in his corner, a long with Dustin. And Robin needs a friend that accepts her for who she is. One of the best scenes of the series
Yep. I feel like the romance between them was kind of forced anyways, like Steve just wanted to get over Nancy so he desperately clung to the idea of someone new. Fortunately he found a real friend instead
I mean they were already friend anyway they just for closer Steve has enough friends and he's developed as a person I think he deserved someone this season. The way the made it look was kinda a dick move
Am I the only one who thought she was gay from the get go, like I didn't expect them to make it canon but she felt like such a lesbian(this feeling might also come from my crush on her)
A lot of people think Steve’s reaction is bad because he starts ‘criticising’ her choice in women. As someone who is queer, if I came out and I got this reaction, I would feel so much relief. Steve isn’t criticising her. He knows she’s terrified, and he wants to reassure her that it’s okay, and he starts making fun of Tammy to show her that she deserves way better. I just really love this scene because I hope my friends will have the same reaction when I come out, and I just feel comforted by this.
I think it’s less that he want to show her that “she deserves better” and more that friends often make fun of each other, but trust each other enough to know they’re joking, so Steve starts poking a little fun at her taste in women in a friendly sort of way to let her know that the friendship is still there and that she doesn’t need to worry.
@@nesaroth a lot of it has a much more conservative society than Western Europe. While you wouldn’t be killed or anything, I’d imagine being ostracized is a legitimate fear.
'oh hey you like boobs? Big deal. I like boobs.' These two are friends for life and amazing, and I utterly adore the pair. Theyv'e got eachother's backs. And coming out in the eighties is all kinds of terrifying. She trusted him, and was still terrified.
This is why I love Steve. His ''oh'' is not one of homophobia. It's an ''oh'' of ''I didn't know this at all, now I do, and I accept you.''' and then they just laugh about Robin's taste in women. We all need a best friend like Steve.
Well I mean it’s also an “oh” of disappointment for himself, I mean he genuinely had a crush on Robin, dare I say he was starting to fall in love with her and that’s him realizing that was never an option on the table for him. Even in season 4 Steve says he would date Robin if she wasn’t gay. But he realizes also that the way he feels about her shouldn’t have to ruin their friendship. He wants to be with her in some way and if it’s platonic then that’s okay too.
the accretion part happens later, but when you hear you don’t think about acception wtf? it’s normal, not superior, not less to him and frankly i don’t think he gives a shit and he was drugged but here it was “oh i fucked up didn’t know” doe to his selfishness of thinking he was liked by her
You can see how much Steve was taken aback by this. He really had to process the prejudice he’s grown up in, conflicting with the person he’d grown to know and care for, and when he finally settled on it, he turned it into a joke that showed he not only accepted her, but still wanted to be besties. This is one of the greatest coming out scenes in TV and I will not take arguments
the best part is I don't even think it's prejudice in the bigotry sense. it just literally had never occured to him that was a thing that could happen, was possible.
@@shoepixie Yeah, got to agree with you. This isn't prejudice, just dealing with the fact that someone he likes likes someone else. Plus, Tammy is a total dud...

You can see her thinking ‘how do I tell him?’. Her thoughts are so out there and the acting is amazing. I love this scene because of the emotion you feel through the screen. It’s beautiful and heart wrenching.
This series is set in 1985. A time when being openly gay was extremely dangerous. And also a time when TV and movies started challenging the idea that being gay was somehow wrong. Robin represents that. A wonderful, quirky, lovely girl that is struggling in her loneliness about being gay, about wanting someone to love...about being accepted. And there is Steve, one of the biggest jerks from her school, turning out to be a damned good friend. And she is TERRIFIED that he will reject her friendship, that he may even attack her over being gay (which happened and still happens today)...she loves him AS A FRIEND...and she is scared. And Steve simply accepts it. It takes a few seconds to understand it. She may be the first gay person he ever met. And he just...accepts it. When so many would not have, Steve make a Muppet joke and accepts her. That is why in the end, Robin gets Steve a job. She will now defend that doofus until the day he dies. Steve protects the Party, but Robin protects Steve. Because he earned it.
Agreed. I can't think of any other single scene from any other Netflix original that instantly won me over this hard, and that's saying something. It's the perfect confluence of expert cinematography and blocking, character development, relationship development, dialogue, score, acting and pacing, not to mention being perfectly adept social commentary and progressive in its normalcy and rawness. It's essentially a three act short condensed into six minutes (and yet, rich and generous in its length in the context of a television episode, especially for a show like Stranger Things). Plus it's the moment people go from liking Robin to loving Maya Hawke, because at least in this show, this is her shining moment and she knocks it out of the park. Personally, I'd have loved for her to get an Emmy nod out of this, because it's a masterclass of understatement and expressionism. Everything about this is a masterclass. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if professors showcase this in television writing classes.
the actors actually wrote it themselves!! the producers originally were setting up robin and steve to be a couple but the actors weren't feeling it so they workshopped this and in the end it stayed in the final cut
Steve roasting his lesbian bestie's taste in women immediately after getting rejected is peak friendship, I would have loved if I was treated like that when I came out. He understands, supports, and is there for her.
Robin not being Steve’s next partner was so important. Steve has come such a long way. He lost his social status, Nancy, The one “friend” he had (that honestly only stuck around because of his status), that fight with Jonathan. And between becoming the babysitter of the group and season 3, he’s made a lot of progress. Him and Robin being friends was so important because he needed someone that was gonna be there for him unconditionally and also humble him. He didn’t need a new partner. He didn’t need a rebound girl. He didn’t need his social status back. He needed a friend.
@@joellevandernol He called Jonathan a fag if I remember correctly, or maybe the word was queer but he used it as an insult anyway Edit: I found it, it's when Steve thinks Nancy has cheated on him with Jonathan. He says "I'm actually kind of impressed, I always took you for a queer but I guess you're just a little screw-up like your father".
I LOVE how the music stopped there after her confession, her being visibly nervous about his reaction. And then he just cracks a joke and the music slowly comes back as their relationship remains unharmed and life is slowly moving on.
This scene filled me with SO MANY emotions. Watching the pain come over Robin's face as she realizes what's happening and that she knows she's going to have to let him down and possibly lose his friendship. Laughing at Steve and his oblivious 'shes a girl' comment. That sense of relief and pure fucking joy when he started teasing her taste in women. This friendship just means so much to me. I cannot wait to see more of these two next season.
You can see Robin is struggling so hard. She knows she's going to break Steve's heart, but she has to tell him the truth because she really loves him and knows he deserves honesty. And Steve handles the situation sooo brilliantly. This scene is so touching, sad and relieving at the same time. Masterpiece.

the absolute hurt you can see in robin's eyes when she realizes that steve likes her is so heartbreaking. you can tell that their friendship means so much to her and she's terrified that by rejecting him she'll ruin it. that's what makes this show and the characters so relatable and loved, because i think we all go through that at some point.

Years later and I will stand by the fact that Steve is the most well-written character in this show. His character progression is unrivaled
i went from hating him to adoring him by the end of s.3 - pretty incredible writing, i think!
yes but the character gets no wins ... from the ladiesmagnet degraded to a joke in costume... i would have wished hed get a girl.. or at least more respect from his surroundings.

Violet Raven and they were super superrrr homophobic at the time the show was set so it would actually be normal for him to go on a whole rant.

I agree, robin is extremely well written but man i just want my boi steve to be happy and find love!

I love the last part where they’re laughing and the music just turns up because they are _friends._
I love this scene because at the end of the day they’re still friends.

the guilt of a guy liking you when you’re a lesbian is unreal, but steve dealt with it so well and i’m glad they chose to redeem him :))
I felt bad for the both of them, but they handled it well. That's how you reveal a gay character, by waiting till the show is released. Not going on the internet saying, "say hello to the first bona-fide openly gay character of the show!". Stranger Things did it right.
And not only that, but her being gay is actually meaningful and adds depth to the character and the story.
Great writing, if you ask me.
@Matheus E
You sure?
Yet so many ppl rage when it happens

i love their friendship so much
This series is set in 1985.

Everything about this is a masterclass. what did he say in season 1?
@@joellevandernol He called Jonathan a fag if I remember correctly, or maybe the word was queer but he used it as an insult anyway
Edit: I found it, it's when Steve thinks Nancy has cheated on him with Jonathan. He says "I'm actually kind of impressed, I always took you for a queer but I guess you're just a little screw-up like your father".
Everyone calls everyone a fag in season 1. Hopper called Will that twice in one conversation with Joyce.
Yeah, the show sold out. Thats what happens when shows sell out.
@@cf9844 what, it becomes...good? this aint it, chief, be a dud somewhere else
This was truly one of those “human moments” you could only understand if you still have a soul or empathy for other humans.
I LOVE how the music stopped there after her confession, her being visibly nervous about his reaction. And then he just cracks a joke and the music slowly comes back as their relationship remains unharmed and life is slowly moving on.
same.. it makes the scene so much more powerful and heartbreaking, you can feel how scared she was when he didn't understand at first
Jakub Serzynski UGH❤️ what a lovely moment
"not all men" you're absolutely right, Steve Harrington would never dare disrespect a woman like this
Steve: *making fun of Tammy Thompson’s singing*
Devynn H fuck tammy thomson!
What about Nancy in s1. Remember "Nancy the slut wheeler "
@@sharminhaque2750 People are allowed to grow and mature. S1 Steve was an asshole. S3 Steve would have beaten S1 Steve up for being like that.
@@matthewschwartz6486 Exactly. S3 Steve drinks respect whamen juice 24/7 it' basically his blood
Steve’s development was just great, at first he was kinda a jerk but became a mum and adopted a bunch of kids.
