Night Landings - ATC audio - POV Flying - Cessna 172SP - FULL flight!

  • Watch in HD - you can read the Panel!
    Ride along as I do several circuits (take-offs and landings) through dusk into official night (30 mins after sunset).
    Toronto Island Airport - CYTZ - class C control zone.
    9 landings in ~45 minutes!
    It is a cold February evening, there is a medium cross wind from the north west / right side (I am using runway 26)
    This was the first time I had my full multi cam set-up recording intercom and ATC audio, so it is a very watchable flight as I talk through everything I am doing.
    It is a great example of the normal circuit procedures in a 172SP, in a control zone.
    (This is also the first time I have shot GoPro at night - they preformed well for my needs, but maybe a little noisy for professional broadcast...)
    This was a relatively busy night so there was lots of radio work, but ATC was very accommodating allowing me to do a pile of circuits to refresh my night currency.
    (In Canada we need to do 5 night landings every 6 months to legally carry passengers at night; I try to do so at least every ~3 months; this is above and beyond day currency - For which insurance requires half an hour logged every 30 days; however, I try to get up about 2-3 times per month.)
    My usual style is to cut shorter videos, but this one is pretty action packed, so after reviewing it for my own benefit, I realized it was worth sharing in it's entirety - the good the bad and the occasional sloppiness.
    In all seriousness, for a "weekend warrior" VFR guy, I'm happy with my performance...
    Was it perfect? Hell, no. But there were no glaring errors, and I caught most of my minor mistakes as I made them.
    I welcome any other constructive criticism and/or positive feedback.
    If I get some positive feed back regarding this "little or not edited" format, I'll consider adding more "Full Flight videos", but for the most part I think a shorter ~5 minute video format is more "digestible".
    I added some additional voice overs / over lay text, and cut out some of the ground operations so it isn't boring.
    I dare you to watch all ~45 mins! - it is worth it - honest :)
    If you really want to skip to some of the best parts, here are some hi-light time codes:
    Time: 4:55
    Short final + a good landing, dusk
    Time: 7:00
    Turning Downwind 2nd circuit
    Time: 8:00
    Turning base + Landing clearance
    Time: 9:20
    Short final + 2nd landing, dusk
    Time: 11:20
    ATC spacing instructions to follow Dash-8
    Time: 13:40
    Dash-8 Wake Turbulence clearly visible on the water.
    Time: 18:50
    Sloppy approach as I was enjoying the view on base...
    ATC instructed full stop on this one due to risk of wake from departing Dash-8
    Time: 21:15
    Official night begins - nice cross wind take-off after a full stop due to wake turbulence ahead.
    Time: 24:00
    Following a Dash-8, another great example of seeing wake turbulence on the water.
    I flew a nice Steep approach.
    Time: 25:25
    Sloppy final, distracted looking at wake on water, then 1st full dark night landing.
    It is pretty good but I didn't hold it off as long as I had intended to.
    Time: 26:55
    I accurately predict ATC spacing instructions.
    Time: 28:00
    downwind, full night, following a Dash-8, I'm clearly enjoying the awesome view!
    Time: 29:00
    Base leg toward city awesome view of the night city sky line.
    Landing clearance, and a pretty good approach, but still fail to hold it off as long as I'd hoped...
    Time: 32:00
    Clear example of a dark night over water resulting in zero visual reference
    - it's a black hole out there, so instrument flying skills need to be sharp even for VFR night flying.
    Time: 33:30
    Another awesome view on the base leg.
    Time 35:05
    I get confused with an ATC traffic advisory (this has to happen at least once per flight :)
    Time: 35:45
    Turning to crosswind leg flying into the "black hole" again.
    Time: 38:50
    Landing clearance and a pretty steep approach requiring full flaps and a full forward slip to get it down.
    The landing turned out rather well, but it may have been a better idea just to go around; however, the glider pilot in me tends to try to save most approaches.
    Time: 41:40
    Take off after a full stop for the final circuit.
    Time: 44:10
    ATC spacing instructions to fit in with arriving Dash-8 traffic.
    It's a challenging one as I am following a Dash-8 and have one relatively close behind me,
    so I'm feeling a little pressure, and sort of hit the wake of the plane I'm landing behind, so the landing is tricky.
    It was a good one to end it on :)
    DISCLAIMER: I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial.I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share.Feed back is invited; however, please keep it positive

    Several years later and I am still watching this video. This format makes it feel like we are not only inside the cockpit with you, but also inside your thought process. Perhaps we could persuade you to make a few videos like this every now and then. It’s the simplicity which I feel makes it good. Cheers!

    This is by far my favorite FlightChops video. I probably have watched it in its entirety 20-30 times, and I can’t really tell you why for sure.
    For one thing, I find it to be a de-stresser. If I have had a long day and I come home and don’t want to “think” about anything, I find myself loading this video. It’s serene. It’s tranquil. It’s night. It’s hypnotic. Talking is kept to a minimum so I can just enjoy listening to ATC. Spotting the incoming Dash 8s on the horizon and announcing their presence. The cold weather and freezing harbor. The little ferry crossing in the ice carved channel. It’s like a Thomas Kinkade Christmas painting.
    Your insistence upon chiding yourself for minor piloting omissions. The cool wake turbulence following landing aircraft. It’s so peaceful. I must have fallen asleep to this at least 10 times. Don’t misunderstand, it’s not boring. It just feels…comfortable, like sitting in an easy chair in the winter with a warm fire in the fireplace and no outside distractions to bother you. Thank you.
    Best wishes.

    Thnx for the comments guys! - so you're really into uncut flights, eh?
    I guess having the panel inset shot helps - I was happy when I got that set-up working so nicely.
    If I post additional longer videos, I'll be sure they are similar relatively action packed flights with lots going on, and I'll add voice over and text to keep things interesting…
    I like to see people post complete flights as well, but it is tough to decide which to watch when some guys on TH-cam are just posting long flights with out much going on, and no voice over or anything for context.

    • @JMcdon1627
      @JMcdon1627 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** The inset helps a lot. Gone is the problem of limited contrast latitude. I wish others would learn to use this trick. Thank you. Maybe you could post the process somewhere, and maybe it will catch on.

      FlightChops some of your best footage!
      The lighting, camera position, incorporation of the panel is all really good!
      Practice videos shown uncut with the panel helps the viewer see your progress on the approach.
      I hope you make more videos that have similar practice like this one and the Super Cub videos!

    This is one of the best 'instructional' videos I've ever watched and I stuck with the whole thing! I can't believe how black that black hole is over the lake. Thanks buddy, more like this please.

      SkipperMac Thanks so much for this comment! I really appreciate the feedback! I found a happy medium over the year or so since releasing this one, and my videos average about 15 minutes long now.
      I still try to get a ride-a-long feel, but I avoid letting them go over 20 minutes, as most viewers just don't stick around that long (but I appreciate that you're one of the rare ones that would :)

    Watched the whole thing! Just went back through the archive and found this one. To be honest, I kinda liked the lengthier video format too. Both kinds are great. It's good to see the evolution of the night and how things changed throughout the flight. Watching multiple circuits helps you hone in on specifics that make you a better pilot, and I think that goes for watching as well as the flying. Really enjoyed this one!

      Gavin Steiner Crazy small world man! I met my flying mentor Norm Barker through your board (I flew to OSH '98 with im and I'm still in touch with him). It's basically his fault I started gliding in ~'95 and then got my PPL in '96. I was at one of the last movie nights when you had it at your new condo in the east end. And I rode a long with you for a spontaneous flight from YTZ to Brampton one evening before my ground school class :P

      The money situation I can really sympathize with. I do not have a PPL but in the past I used to go and get odd flight every year but lately it's just got so expensive here 175 Euros an hour for a 172 plus instructor so I have not been now for almost two years.

    Its cool to see the old terminal out in the field there. I used to have lunch there everyday while I was working on the new Porter terminal back about 6 years ago. Great memories of one of the best jobs I've ever worked on.

    • @FlightChops
      @FlightChops  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keith Burr You're binge watching Flight Chops - aren'tcha? :) Anyway - cool that you're local - I also miss that old terminal building. I had many a Druxies sandwich in there to celebrate a successful flight. It is sad that there really isn't a place for GA pilots to hang out at YTZ anymore... That's part of the reason I'm flying out of ZBA mostly now - that and the rental fleet is more diverse. I love having access to a 172, PA-28 or the Super Cub based on the mood I'm in :)

    • @KeithArnotBurr
      @KeithArnotBurr 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** lol you make fascinating aviation videos man. They did have great sandwiches. That must have been pretty intimidating landing in between the two dash 8s.
      My dad told me a story once when he took a trip to Pearson from Sarnia back in the 70s. The ATC told him to take first high speed exit to make way fot AC L1011. Dad said he was just barely off the runway when the tristar went screaming past him. One of those "check yourself" moments I guess.
      I really enjoy these videos thanks for all your hard work.

    • @FlightChops
      @FlightChops  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keith Burr Thanks - And yeah, it would have been cool (and crazy) to be flying in the '70's - it was sort of the peak of general aviation before things started leveling off and becoming less accessible and more expensive... And it's great to hear the videos are being enjoyed; I love that people dig into the back catalog to watch the older ones, because yeah, as you've noticed, there is a lot of blood, sweat and tears put into editing these videos.

    Thanks, Steve, I watched the entirety while waiting to go on a night flight with a student here @ KBOI. Great training! Now don't get me wrong, ( I get paid to be a nag) but go back and watch it again. Watch the ball! Most pilots I teach don't use enough right rudder, especially when rolling out of a left climbing turn. I loved the in & out view! Still looking for the Beaver Time in AK!!! Yours Truly, CFII Mac

I decided not to continue publicly publishing long ones because they don't appeal to most viewers, but the few that to like them, really like them - so it was a perfect for for PAtreon - that is where I put the "uncut" flights when I am in the initial stages of editing episodes - there are over 3 dozen there now if you want to sign up there.

    I'm a huge fan of circuits....don't know why but I find them interesting...crosswinds too. I got knocked into my head to say everything aloud when flying. It helps keep things sorted and passengers feel they are in the loop when they hear you actively doing stuff.

      Hey FlightChops, No I'm not currently flying out of CYTZ. I was an international flight training student and once i was done with my Group 1 IFR I came back to India. Fast forward, i'm currently working in a full service carrier (F/O). I'm all in for a chai latte (oh but nothing beats the Tim Hortons DD), would be lovely catching up with you if you are in or around the GTA. Had not seen this one before Good video!
    Very interesting seeing night flights (which I have not learned yet). The crosswind looking at black emptiness by the lake looks disconcerting, with no visuals at all (to a low time VFR student). Thanks for posting!

    • @FlightChops
      @FlightChops  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks - glad you found this one - it's an oldy but a goodie :)
      And yeah, flying in the "black hole" takes some getting used to.
      I recommend doing more than the minimum FAA required night training.
      In Canada (and many other countries) the "night rating" is an add on above and beyond the PPL.

    • @AlexFeldstein
      @AlexFeldstein 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** When I get my license (I'm taking it slow) I plan to do more night patterns every so often just for fun.

    • @FlightChops
      @FlightChops  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right on - but remember it is not just night landings, but rather night XC that catches VFR guys off guard. Even a nice VFR night under certain conditions, can "feel" like an IMC nightmare rather quickly if you aren't prepared; Some common illusions such as the black hole when flying on a moonless dark night over a sparsely settled area, or costal fog / low clouds can crop up rather quickly… The JFK Jr. story comes to mind. Pick up a copy of "the Killing Zone" - it is an amazing book to help understand these sorts of things.

    • @AlexFeldstein
      @AlexFeldstein 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** I was not thinking of JFK Jr. and his overconfidence, under-experience, and carrying passengers no less. Certainly will when I venture solo XC sometime in the future. Good point!

    Just did same (minus the night) last week. Nice to see humans fly -- I found it really hard (naw, impossible) to do EXACTLY the same thing on each circuit so I know that's an unreasonable expectation. Like the minimal editing because the cadence of the circuits DOES matter (especially for checklists & etc). Very much agree with others about verbal callouts -- talk to self is an excellent practice. Look forward to more from you!

      ***** Yup, I'm really into what you call 'weekend flying' lately. I downloaded X-Plane 10 and everything. When I get older, after a startup I make gets acquired by Google, I plan to purchase the latest 172S and have my own private air strip in my backyard, and fly to my work twice a week in the Israeli Air Force as a fighter jet developer. So I need to learn everything I can, now, while I'm still young!

    Keep it up Chops! If you do long flights, please include; flight following and FSS audio conversations for those of us needing more confidence with radio procedures. Also, include all check-points in order to follow along on Skyvector (route). Thanks again, the insert of the dash is a nice touch.

    • @FlightChops
      @FlightChops  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ok cool - will do - I actually have a basic video showing how to receive flight following if you look back in my channel - the name has flight following in it.
      As for following along while watching, I now use "cloud ahoy" which is an amazing app for capturing a super detailed track - so I could share the flight track via a link, and then you could follow along - I do that for debriefing IFR lessons now - I have 2 monitors, so the video is on one, and then I sync the cloud ahoy track to the other = awesome!

    • @FlightChops
      @FlightChops  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha thnx - yeah for a video like this, definitely no music is the way to go! But I do reserve the right to add music to some videos, but those ones are generally more "fun" edits which lend themselves to music… but yes, most of my videos are "virtual ride along flights" and I want to maintain the most realistic experience.
