    This is a remarkable treat to see this in hi-def.
    I'm familiar with Bonneville dating back nearly 60 years ago when originally seeing it from still photos and grainy movie films. When I was a kid (early to mid 1960s), my neighbors were the Markley Brothers with their yellow #360 Belly Tank Lakester; and Bob Herda with the #999 B class streamliner.
    When I look back at those times when I was a kid, I find it remarkable the Markley Brothers had the patience with allowing me to hang out with their crew while they worked on getting that #360 Lakester into shape for the Bonneville Speed Week.
    That crew for the Markley Brothers worked some late nights, as on some days they'd be playing Rock music well near to midnight, as the following day my Mom would comment about hearing the music resonating through the wall of her bedroom at our house, as the Markleys were next door neighbors. She didn't mind the noise, as she was a stay-at-home Mom. Dad worked nights so it didn't disturb him.

    Awesome video footage. I've always wanted to go the Salt Flats and watch the runs. My step dad is building a 1977 Harley Davidson Cafe Racer that has some Bonneville history to it. The bike was purpose-built to run at Bonneville. It set a record, then they parked the bike for the next 40+ years and let it rot away. They never washed the salt off and it ate most of the bike. He wound up finding the bike last year and is restoring it to some of it's former glory. I don't think he has any plans on trying to run the flats again, he's just an old coot who loves motorcycles! Good day, Y'all!

    Thank you! Went to Bonneville for Speed Week 2010. It is crazy watching a car go 400+. One thing I thought that was way cool and totally unexpected was the dozens of old die-hard hot rodders that had been showing up every year since the ‘50’s. Lots of them still driving the old roadsters they built when they were teenagers. Some of the coolest old dudes I have ever met.

    • @tomeighty
      @tomeighty  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnbode5528 On the Streamliners that go 300-400mph they get pushed because the rear end gears are so low that it would bog the engine down if they took off under there own power. So they get up to about 50 mph and then takes off.

    What many don’t realize about the flats is that they are not dry, as the top surface is always pulling moisture from below by capillary action. The surface is like hard pavement that has remains of winter sanding with intermittent rain spots. It sucks for traction!!! Best training for driving on it is a frozen lake, throttle control and downforce are your friends. The inner fenders look like you just came through a little blizzard after driving on the salt. Yes it he’s warm there but even at 100 f it is reasonable if you can find shade and liquids.

      Oh, gee, that would be destroying the salt flats. Wait a minute, they have let the potash company do that for decades. I have a better idea. Why can’t the government let them pave a small strip of Rogers Dry Lake? Maybe pave the overrun out about another 12 miles. They could gate off the runway and let them run on the overrun. Chances of that happening? ZERO!

    • @nzsaltflatsracer8054

      @@king-o-vetts9899 There are no tires that can run much over 300 on blacktop due to the heat buildup. LSR tires have about 1/16" of rubber on the contact area so they can survive the rpm at speed & the salt actually keeps them cool. An 800x18 Mickey will grow 1-1/2" in height at 400, they are 9" wide, 30" tall & we run 100psi in them but we run them on a 5-1/2" wide rim so they won't pull off the bead at speed. Their design is narrow for the same reason a snow tire is narrow, it relates to more weight per surface area of contact patch for a lose surface.

    • @king-o-vetts9899

      I personally believe that building a dedicated 550 mph tire is possible. Drag slicks consistently run up to 340 several times and are in no way constructed for top speed. If I owned Speed Demon, I would build a new chassis to run 4 wheel drive with the cockpit cantilevered just ahead of the front wheels. They obviously have the power to go at least 525. I just think the current tire available becomes dangerous when you try to push it past 450 in a 2 wheel drive configuration.

    • @nzsaltflatsracer8054

      @@king-o-vetts9899 If you put the driver ahead of the front wheels you have no reference points to know what the car is doing, look at history on that point & the crashes that resulted. We are fortunate to have tires at all due to the tiny sales numbers & the Goodyears & Mickeys are remade 1960 designs. Georges traction control & engine management systems are what has allowed him to go 40mph faster than we did without any. My new liner is 4WD AA/BFS.

It is the most prestigious car show in the country. Every year they have a special display theme. That year they dedicated one whole giant display hall to Bonneville racers past and present. It was spectacular. Poteet and Main had the Speed Demon there with all the panels off. So cool. After Speed Week the car washes in Wendover are flanked with drifts of salt. Must be the same in Tooele going the other way.

      Yeah it has to be crazy at the car washes in Wendover. I washed mine in Salt Lake City where my hotel was. Way cheaper getting a hotel there rather than Wendover.

      Dry lake beds in California. They are not as long as Bonneville but good practice grounds.

    🤔 3:39: Call me crazy, but unless he's competing for the "world's longest wheel spin", it may have been helpful to choose tires that provide traction on salt.....

    • @tomeighty
      @tomeighty  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There actually is no tire that will "hook" on salt, it only takes weight and speed before you can really get into the throttle at the salt flats. A lot of racers will test the traction before the 1 mile marker and see how it is that day, so he was blipping the throttle a bit and got more than he expected I'm sure. It is a 5 mile race course so they do have plenty of track to ease into the throttle to get up to speed. Good question though!

      I would think that studded tires would provide some additional traction. Clearly you can't just punch the pedal and expect that your car is going to hook up and not slip, even with studded tires. But id think they would provide a fairly significant traction improvement over non-studded tires, to help keep your car from losing control.
      BTW, How thick is the salt there? If you picked random spots here and there, and dug holes, would it only be a foot or two before you hit dirt? Or is it ridiculously thick, like 50-100-200 feet thick?
