      My thoughts . Am aerodynamic wonder.. I'm assuming maybe they don't need as much final gear ratio as they think

  • @MrCarnutbill67
    @MrCarnutbill67 3 ปีที่แล้ว +204

    To all the people saying the speeds aren’t that impressive, you know they’re driving on salt right? Not pavement, not concrete but salt. Not a solid sheet of rock salt but like coarse table salt. Let that marinate for a minute.

    • @tomeighty
      @tomeighty  3 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      I think some people have it stuck in there heads that they are still running jet engines or rockets out there and hitting the old speed records. And also you are right about the salt, it is as close to being on snow as you can imagine. You can't give it much throttle till you are going over 100 mph or so.

    • @jfv65
      @jfv65 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I think it's lame they need a push from a smoke belching polluting diesel truck.
      Furthermore, at this point in time this sport is purely for entertainment purposes. Everything about ICE's is well established knowledge/technology. Same can be said for aerodynamics.
      They should do this with EV's, battery class and a fuel-cell class.
      Maybe that would help advance that technology?

    • @MrCarnutbill67

      They have those classes as well. 99% of racing is for entertainment. Very very few can do it for a living. As far as having aerodynamics "figured out" most of these vehicles are home built. Very few teams have access or the money for wind tunnel testing. They also only race a couple times a year. Check out the Buckeye Bullet built by students at The Ohio State University if ur interested in EV land speed racing.

It is no joke hanging out at events that are over 100 degrees for 10 - 12 hours a day and getting up early and doing it again, and then driving home from 2,000 miles away. Hey on a side note did you ever do a paint job on a custom van or do pin striping on one? I've been binge watching old school van walk through videos and loving them. I would definitely like to know what the classes are and possibly in what class each car is running. When you see a car set a record at 200 mph and a similar looking car not set a record at 400 mph, it gets a bit confusing.

    • @47485ksc

      Thanks for watching buddy. The event is really complicated, there is a zillion different classes of racers and a zillion different ways to get in the record books. All the easy records have been crushed long time ago, you need to find a unique one to go for a record now a days. So basically it isn't a free for all to see who can go the fastest, it is who can go the fastest with certain restrictions. Like body design, engine displacement and on and on...

    I watched a few runs, however, without the classes each vehicle was in it was just fast cars and got a bit boring. The first was speed Demon at over 400 mph, however, later cars were slower and did record-breaking runs, so, I assume there are classes, or, the runs were shown out of sequence. A bit of info (even text) on each streamliner and what class it was in, then the run would have made it a bit more interesting. People that know the sport will probably know each streamliner and a bit about them, however, if you want to get new people in you need to educate them on the sport.

    Hope my question isn't so stupid. I like that stuff . Seen so many videos . But wonder every time how that salt can be so smooth? Do they prepare it like scrape it before they go out . Or use some sort of machine to get it straight ?

    • @tomeighty
      @tomeighty  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Great question. They actually start a week ahead of time if the water has fully left the track and looks like the races will go off. And they use a large piece of steel square stock that might be weighted down and they drag it back and forth with a truck and knock the pointed head off of the salt to smooth it out. It takes a few passes from what I have heard and it comes out pretty flat. One thing they also have to look for is soft spots in the salt where there is a pocket of water underneath it. The salt kind of becomes like sand then and is spongy like. And that is now good, it will spin cars out. Thanks for watching Roger!

    I hope a major production company produces a Bonneville Speed Week feature. With proper speed matching panning cameras start/during/end of run. There is clearly massive interest in this event, it just needs someone to come and film it and put it together. @Netflix maybe?

    • @tomeighty
      @tomeighty  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's tough setting up out on the Salt Flats when it is 110 degrees out there. And the cars do not really run one after the other, there is a lot of delays and such. And the panning of video on the Salt Flats is super tough because everything looks white in the camera lens and they are going so fast it is hard to keep up with them. So when I nail one, I get really happy. Ha ha. Thanks for watching and be sure to keep an eye out for the next video coming out in a few weeks. Speed Week starts on Aug 5th.

      Yes public is welcome to go out and watch the races. I think it is $25 for the day or $60 for a week long pass. It is the Wild West when you go out there, you can walk around in the mile long pits, you can walk around in the staging lanes, you can stand right on the starting line and watch them take off, or you can drive you car down the side of the 5 mile track and park anywhere behind the black line they lay out on the track. It is very cool, but also very brutal in the heat if you are out there for 8 hours or so. Bring a big hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water. Thanks for watching my video!
