I'm a greyhound driver..from my experience...it is a public transportation so rich people don't ride in..this is a very low class transporation,I'm dealing with all types of people, actually I don't take anything personal...these types of transportations can't be any better than they already are.....I meet with a lot of drug addicts..they're very rude...it's a cool job,I like it but I have to keep my eyes open still....

A similar thing is happening with public transport in Ireland. People causing trouble on the trains and trams where there is little or no staff to supervise things. Not as bad on busses where the drivers can stop on the road and call for backup. Sometimes services into the rougher estates are stopped at night. What happens then is that parents or community leaders take the trouble makers in hand and try and sort them out. Then services resume.
Ireland is in the middle of a transition away from car use for everything to public transport but the need to improve quality, lower costs and stop public order offences is becoming a hot political issue

@@jgdooley2003 Same in The Netherlands. Zaandam has had its fair share of buses being targeted by stone-throwers and (possibly) even getting shot at, at some point the drivers collectively refusing to drive through the rough neighbourhoods there. The trainstation there is now unsupervised as far as I know. The result is a textbook-classic: all kinds of people you don't want at a trainstation, now do enter: they just kick in the gates that should keep them out. (According to the slogans used in the past when the electronic ticketing system was introduced 10-15 years ago, this would not be possible, but yeah, everyone with a clear mind knew it wouldn't stop fare-evaders)

I took a greyhound 59 years ago from Newark to Denver and it was horrible back then even for a 12 year old. They lost our luggage for several days, bus stations were mostly filthy, crawling with cockroaches in Nebraska. The class of people, though I am sure much better back then than today was still not very good. They would rent you pillows, then clean them out in the middle of the night when the bus stopped. The food at the bus stops was awful. Many more people traveled by bus back then since flights were quite expensive, but at least there was some competition from Trailways which probably kept the trip from being a total disaster. We ended up flying back from Denver to Newark, since the trip out was so bad. My aunt took me on some train trips a couple of years later pre Amtrak, and the difference was between night and day, the train trips were a great experience rather than a nightmare, of course they cost way more.

Bus breakdowns were also a problem then. Even well into the 1970s some of the old Scenecruisers (built in 1954-55) and other older buses were still in daily use at least in the western states. I loved the old antiques a lot but apparently they were cutting corners on maintenance and service times. My rides never broke down but I heard of a lot that did.

Bus stations in the U.S. are generally small and rundown, because buses are only used by people without much money. The buses themselves are okay. However, as you stated, it can be quite difficult to sleep on a bus. Although, I've found it can be difficult to sleep on a train too if you don't have a private room. You also have to watch your possessions on a bus. The class of people on there make it more likely that someone will try to steal your bag. I took buses when I was younger but these days I prefer the train if I have the time or flying if I'm in a hurry.

Well, I live in Canada and used the buses fairly regularly. No real disasters or fiascos (or anyone decapitated...)... untill the lines literally ceased to exist one day. Should have expected that though. Years earlier , Greyhound Air folded and left me stranded in British Columbia!

The last time I rode greyhound from NYC to Pensacola Florida It was such a total nightmare to put it mildly 😱😳. First the bus broke down on some random road. We waited 2 hours for a replacement bus. Then off to Jacksonville we’re I had an 8 hour layover because the bus problem so we missed our connecting buses. Jacksonville was definitely another mental ward to put it mildly. Then there was a couple fighting and had to be removed in the middle of the night after they threw a can at the driver who asked them to calm down. Then on our next rest stop someone stole everything off my seat. A big burley bike rider sitting next to me helped me get my stuff back. That was about 10-11 years ago. And it’s become more of a shelter on wheels. I used to enjoy the greyhound and sent my twins alone to Florida back in the 1990’s. It’s disgraceful how folks ruin the simple things in life. 😳🤷🏽

The second type ride because they have no other choice.

About 15 years ago my wife and I were on vacation in the USA and organized transport with the idea using Greyhound while traveling the different states. It was cheaper than any other option and nobody warned us about the caveats of Greyhound. I planned it all out and was super proud of myself about how much money we would save from car rentals.
After landing in the States, our first leg was from Newark to Detroit.
Our first red flag was inside the Newark bus terminal. As we walked in, it was full of homeless and one was wearing a diaper on his head. Everyone was arguing and yelling. It smelled of urine and poop.
When we got on the bus, a few passengers began to argue about who sits where and a first fight broke out and as our travel progressed, intermittent arguments continued between passengers and/or the driver. It seemed to enrage passengers that the driver never responds to any requests.
By the time our journey was done and experiencing all of this and more, first rhing I did was rent a car and used a rental for the rest of our trip.
We are from Eastern Europe, Bulgaria and have NEVER experienced anything like this coming from one of the poorest countries in Europe. Wild ride.

Greyhound is a bit better in different spots. Memphis is a great greyhound location as well as St. Louis. Atlanta is a rough greyhound station and when I go from Nashville to Knoxville; greyhound often sends me thru Atlanta... As long as you are where you are supposed to be at pickup; greyhound will eventually get you to your location but don't expect to arrive on time. Most people on a greyhound are having a rough day/ week/ or season in life and respect goes a long way. Please be respectful and kind even when you are stressed out or people don't seem so nice back. I wish there was other options to choose from but there is not. Greyhound is the only way if you are on a budget. Sometimes you get lucky and are on time so that was good for you. Please be respectful and kind to the other passengers and the driver. A positive attitude, even when you don't feel like it, can have the ripple effect of saving lives.

True. When I was about to visit Ukraine (well, Kyiv, as the friend who invited me lived there) and went to a store to buy a suitcase (I had never flown before), there was a guy with some expert knowledge on Ukraine there. He strongly advised against taking a marshrutka, a small bus that carries about 20 seated passengers, but in reality often gets packed to the point the doors can't even close anymore. The reason was just the extremely dangerous driving, the bad state of the road-surface and the technical state of the buses being 'a point of discussion'.
But they usually connect the outer edges of cities to the inner city or across and at least connect to regular buses. They are usually also cheaper than regular buses, so you'll find all kinds of people on board.
So, when I ended up in the company-restaurant that friend worked at and her nephew wanted me to see the railroad-exhibition at Tsentralni ('central' trainstation in Kyiv), we had two choices: taking a regular bus at the nearest stop that was more than 1,5 km away, or walking 300 meters to a marshrutka stop. Considering it was mid-winter and the streets were filled with piles of snow (and icycles from the company-building slammed into the walkway-shelter we were under), we went for the marshrutka.
Yes, it was exactly as advertised (and I got lucky, as the evening peak had started and traffic was only moving slow at most points) but I did not want to miss it for the world. The small cushion at the driver where you just throw your banknotes on to pay for the journey, all the stickers, commercials, curtains and what not the driver used to decorate his vehicle with, intermittent lighting, the kind of fair-ride I got because of all the holes in the road and eventually just getting so much passengers on board one had to pay the journey by giving the passenger in front of you some money, which would then be relayed via other passengers until it would get to the driver, who would issue the change, which would then make its way back to the passenger in the same manner. Eventually just getting the backpack of someone else shoved in my face as it just got packed (seriously, since then, I don't easily complain anymore about packed buses or trains anymore in The Netherlands, where I live)
Just after we exited ours, another marshrutka driver decided to drive the wrong way into traffic as he thought waiting for the red light was stupid. So yeah... I don't recommend it, but darn, do ride them once. There's just nothing comparable to them in my country at all.

Riding a nearly empty bus can be a pleasant experience, especially during the daytime when you don't need sleep. Riding overnight in a crowded bus, you never know what to expect. Worse scenario is a mother with screaming babies, groups of loud young men, obnoxious drunks, and guys who masturbate under the jackets on their lap. Cellphomes add another potential annoyance. The diffence between waiting in bus depots versus airports is indiscribable. Just remember that buses serve the poorest folks while air travel caters to the wealthiest. In the USA, almost everyone drives a car. Those who ride Greyhound often are those marginalized people who cannot afford a car or lack the health requirements to obtain a driver's license. Be glad that yu have a choice. Many bus riders have no other options.

Actually, these days airports are getting pretty bad, too, as far as “interesting characters.” Many large airports allow a population of homeless to live inside the airport, 24/7. At LAX there are something like 300 or more permanent residents. They can’t get past security to the gates so they inhabit the restrooms and sleep in waiting areas outside the security zones.

Roving gangs there, and endless mooches trying to get money. Lost a night's reservation at a Chicago hotel, and Greyhound basically told me too bad. I never was reimbursed.

Greyhound when they are short drivers will fly them out from other places. They may have never been familiar with a route and just handed a stack of papers to delineate their route. No GPS unless they have a phone that works in the area and can load the route on it. Sometimes in the rain with mudslides with a whole bus load of people who do not speak English. They have Angels and stories to tell. You won't ever be bored. In Canada, Greyhound is no more. People miss them up there but it was not possible to go on. I had some Marijuana in my bag and i accidentally let the smell waft out. And this dude immediately noticed. At first he was just lightly joking about sharing and that he likes getting high too. But he kept getting more and more aggressive in demanding some of my stash. I told him to chill out and when we get to the next rest stop I'll hook him up. Next rest stop we hop off the bus and i give him a couple of nugs. He wanted me to smoke him out but i made some dumb excuse about not wanting to get high at the moment. The dude goes behind a building and smokes up. We're back on the bus and the dude starts getting really weird. He's upset about me not wanting to smoke with him. He asks for more pot and I say no. Then he starts insinuating that he'll snitch on me to the driver. Like i said this along time maybe 20 years ago. I'm pretty sure i could've gotten into alot of trouble for crossing state lines with like 2 ounces of pot. Anyways, next rest stop i fake apologize for not wanting to smoke earlier and to share a joint with this guy. I forgot to mention earlier thar noticed this was a total lightweight. So, my plan was to get him high as shit and maybe he'll shut up and leave me alone. Im back on the bus and kinda high so completely space it that the dude didn't get back on. As the bus is starting to pull away I realized he wasn't aboard. Now, in total honesty, I did consider for a second or two letting the driver know that we were missing a passenger. But that dude was such a shit head. I just closed my eyes and went to sleep. Btw, sorry about the long comment. Im actually high right now.

you will also meet some jerks in our airports, and rail stations as well. Greayhound is like the only cross countrey bus service we have . does anyone remember when we had Trailways and Grayhound? we had a thing called compatition for the buisness of bus travel. service was so much better in those days.

It says a lot about buses and bus stations, when Greyhound wants to relocate the station and nobody in town wants it built near them. That happened recently where I live and they still haven't been able to agree on a permanent home for it.

You got lucky for sure. Or maybe I’m just unlucky when it comes to greyhound probably a bit of both honestly. As someone who has taken greyhound from California to Indiana…. And other trips much shorter. The only positive I can say is the shorter you have to be on the bus the better or if you can avoid it all together that’s the best… but the stations I’ve been to all dirty. Busses late all the time and I’m talking hours or even days late because I was once stuck in Denver for 2 days and was only offered a 7.50 food voucher… that station in my opinion is the nastiest station pee on the floors poop on them as well… just nasty.. I’ve also never been on one that the Wi-Fi actually worked at all

On 6/25/22, I had a $58 ride booked with Greyhound for a trip from NYC to Binghamton NY. I had to reschedule the trip to 7/9/22 so I called Greyhound. After I paid the $20 re-book fee, the lady in the Philippines gives me my confirmation #. When I tried to print the ticket the day before my trip using my confirmation #, I get an OOPS message. I call customer care. Apparently, the ditz who was supposed to reschedule my trip rescheduled it for that same 6/26 date! Based on your reply (10 years!), I guess I can kiss my $78 good-bye.

Late 1980s. My first and last experience on Greyhound was traveling across part of the mid-west to get from my families home to an Amtrak station to take the train home. Lets just say the people that rode even back then were the biggest problem with taking the bus as only the craziest people take the bus. That was a surprise. Amtrak was awesome, I met a group of people my age, we even ordered a delivery pizza when the train got into Salt Lake City and brought it on board. That part was a memorable trip.

Greyhound stations can in fact be a lot like mental hospitals....LOL! I've actually tried to take a bus out of Atlanta and when they finally announce it's time to board then everyone suddenly heads to the boarding areas very quickly, and what's supposed to be about maybe 3 or 4 single file lines ends up with just a bunch of people gathered around wondering where to go, which is very chaotic and disorganized compared to most other stations. But the inner cities are always the worst from what i've heard.

It's crazy that the Atlanta bus station is so dumpy. In Springfield, Ma., a much smaller city, they rehabbed the old Union Station (Hartford, CT. did the same) so you have bus and trains all in one large, beautiful building. But I have to admit there still a few unusual characters.

Yeah, but bus travel is only for those these days with no other option. Before 1985, some people rode the bus as a choice. Nowadays, with a little preplanning you can book a flight for cheaper than the bus and far less travel time in most cases. But, this summer has been a trog for air travel too. Nothing is a given anymore. But for the bus I'd have to be super desperate. Back as a youngster I loved Greyhound. But that feels like another century.

Back in the '70's a friend and I went cross country with Greyhound from New York to Los Angeles. About 3 days. We had the time of our lives. Friendly folk became actual friends. My friend had her guitar and we spent the nights singing and talking with everyone. Some strange characters but nobody scary or too rough. We lived on Jack Daniels and smoke. LOL. We were both 18 and it truly was an unforgettable adventure. I still think of that trip all these years later. I wouldn't recommend that bus journey now to anyone of any age. Too bad, but that was another era back then. It doesn't exist anymore.

I rode a Greyhound from Missisippi to Los Angeles in late 1996. I can say that I did not have a bad experience of the type that people in 2022 experience. The Greyhound bus terminals at departure and destination were relatively clean and quiet. I didn't see diorderly or unstable people. Of course that was 26 years ago and apparently things have gone downhill. But I'm not certain all that can be attributed to Greyhound. Passengers have become unruly, rude, violent and possibly disturbed individuals. What can Greyhound do about that? Probably nothing. Cracking down on unruly behavior will bring out all the screaming activists claiming racism, discrimination, and what not. That is what our nation is today. Don't expect it to improve anytime soon.

Many (many) years ago I took a Greyhound from Amherst, Nova Scotia to Boston, MA., mostly during the night. The bus had no onboard toilet, so we made a rest stop every two hours, and in the middle of the night in the wilds of Maine, there aren't many places open. Those that were open were not fine dining. ;-) The bus was very uncomfortable, but otherwise I had no complaints.

When I was a teenager, Greyhound was how I traveled The last time I used the system, I travelled about 800 miles. There was almost always a movie playing and they had earphones available, for a small fee. Having grown up using Greyhound, I found the system 'normal'. Sure the seats aren't overly comfortable, but I was able to get in a few cat naps. The last leg, about 200 miles, was a milk run. The bus stopped at every little town on the route that used the parcel system. It was a long ride but we stopped in places that I didn't know existed. I've even stopped at some of them since, when I was driving. I was unhappy when Greyhound left Canada, there has been no one else that has taken up the slack. There are small companies that have bits and pieces of some of the longer routes but nothing like Greyhound's system. I've needed to travel recently but had no option available for the extended trip I needed.

In Canada greyhound was dubbed the 'looser cruiser' due to how frustrating. I think greyhound has folded up in most if not all of Canada now. Utilized that company several times until I was so frustrated, came to the conclusion it would be more efficient to hitchhike or rent a vehicle.
