- Today we are making some bathroom progress at my fixer upper house, but we are also having some setbacks! We are working on putting a wood shelf in my bathroom, as well as wood in front of the tub!
Hey there! My name is Abby and I recently bought a MAJOR fixer upper house. I am SO excited to work on fixing it up this old house and turning it into my dream home. I can't wait to take you on this journey with me! I am planning to DIY as much as I can and learn so much about home renovations along the way. I am starting out totally clueless so I am sure it will be a grand adventure! Follow along on my channel if you want to see DIY projects, renovating a house on a budget, and I am sure a lot of craziness along the way! I'm just a girl with a drill and a dream.

I was taught to rub off access as I went along, so it wouldn't be too dark 🎉🎉❤
I often see people use a rag to rub on … not a brush . They wipe as they go
@@janetduffy4729 I use a chunk off an old t-shirt always
To make some stain light you have to put it on and wipe it off with a cloth
💯💯💯
Yes,or buy a lighter color stain…
At lot of people use a rag to apply stain and rub off the excess before it dries
💯💯💯
Completely agree! That would be the best way to apply the stain. I love the darker look.
That is how you did your window trim, rag wiped. That's why it looks dark on the bath.
I like the idea of “living with it awhile”. I would go one step further though. Place a couple of fake plants on the shelf and some colored bath towels by the tub faucet. Maybe even hang a picture. That way your brain will see the whole image and you can really decide. ❤❤❤
That's some great advice there - we perceive things a bit differently when there are other things to catch our eye.
If it were me, I just know the difference in the wood stain would always bother me. I wonder if maybe the stain didn't get stirred enough on the 1st staining? I wonder if paint thinner rubbed on the boards might lighten it. Sanding & restraining definitely would, just adds alot more time & work😮. I love the overhead light & overall aesthetic of the bathroom😊
Maybe it's a happy accident. Live with it and continue to finish the room. The difference may add character to the room and not be matchy matchy. I like your progress. 😊😊😊😊😊
Great idea 👍🏻
It looks too dark, my opinion being truthful
Can’t make stain lighter but you could make the counter and shelf darker
I love seeing the kitties playing in the background as you are working.
Yes! Loved watching them! I found myself watching them, and not Abby staining. Sorry, Abby. 🤭
It's so great your dad can custom make the boards for your tub. Can't wait to see it done!! 👏👏👏
Ooohhhhh!!! It's so nice!!! 😊
Your kittens are precious!! So little. 🤗
Is it the same as the sink stand? Boy, I'd have to actually see it all!! To me it's great!!
Nice hanging light!!
I enjoyed this video!!! 😊💕
It looks great! I read the comments about your kittens...I think you should consider them being indoor/outdoor kitties too ..allot of great company for you....plus they definitely enjoy your company too...I know with winter coming...your heating up that house may seem like enough for them but they are soooo close to that road and just the cars that we can see buzzing by once in a while..is scary...plus..it will just take one time for them to follow you back or pull out of your driveway... Please consider letting them be inside too...I rarely comment but had to this time..take care
I agree. If they could come in at night it would be a lot safer.
If a person has allergies , having cats inside could be a problem! I had 2 cats & luckily I had an enclosed porch that they could come into in the winter, yet were not actually IN my house. Also when you have new furniture, you do not want cats clawing it up.
Cats fight other cats after dusk…or get killed by predators!! Close them in or up right before dusk!! I worry about the road and cars though…🙏🏻🙏🏻🥺
My 10 year old kitty comes in and out as she pleases...usually sleeping indoors and goes potty outdoors. The best of both worlds! They look so cute on your sped up video playing with each other! They're adorable!
@@robinvalentine2820 In who's garden?
Coming together nicely. I look forward to seeing your home showcased in Best Abodes and Veggie Plots. Love them kitties too. 👍👍👍
If you are like me, outside kitties become inside kitties in 3, 2, 1............DONE! The bathroom looks BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!! The darker wood looks BEAUTIFUL!
I agree and love it 💕
The poly might change the colour, try getting some extra w😮😢ood and stain & poly it just to see if that will make a difference,
It could go lighter or darker. I hope that helps.
Personally, I think the difference in color will not be as noticeable when You add all the accessories to the room. You can always shorten the cord on the lamp.
I am not a perfectionist, so the difference in color doesn't bother me at all
When you stain, you need to wipe the excess off with a rag or towel. It don't look bad and I think it compliment the light and tan along with the wicker light shade. To me, it screams Caribbean lol. I agree, just let it sit a while before you decide to change it again. The type and grain of wood makes the difference when it absorb the stains. Good job Abby!
Great job and loved the video 😘👍🏻💕💕🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Your kittens in the background are too cute!!!!
Abby, wipe on wipe off technique in staining makes a huge difference. The type of wood will also make a difference. It's going to be beautiful when you get it just like you want it. Your kitties are adorable! Have a beautiful, blessed night. 🙏
Paint and stain etc. are funny things....sometimes humidity, temperature etc. make a huge difference when you are painting. !
Yes. September. When I lived in Wisconsin. September meant cold weather was just a few weeks away. Bummer. Now living in South Texas. September means good-bye to heat and humidity... Woo-Hoo. Love winter here. Best time of year. Love the kittens. House is looking great.
You’ll figure it out honey. I know you will. Excellent video
Love the lampshade sets off the dark
I like the lighter prehaps putting less on with rag not brush
I like the darker stain in the bathroom. It gives a good balance. I would leave them like they are.
I also like the dark stain..
I see the difference but actually I really like the mix of colors, it’s very rich and clean looking❤beautiful bathroom coming along!❤
If the color difference bothers you, just try again. Resand. Apply light coat with a rag and rub off as you go. Your home must please only you and not your viewers.😊 You are doing a great job!!!
The kittens are so cute!
I like the dark boards
Thumbs up today for the kitty cats. 😻
I hope she gets them fixed.
When I stain wood, I wipe the stain a few minutes after brushing it on.
I agree. Stain should be wiped off right after you brush it on.
The light is really cool! I like it!
The new cabin bathroom looks amazing Abby & ur team work very awesome too.
Put the stain on then rub off right afterwards to see if that’ll help. I personally like the dark.
Kittens playing is bringing me so much joy!! 💙💙💙
Those kitties are SOOOOOOOOOOO cute playing in the background ❤
Yeah...miss not having kittens. Really enjoyed watching them play.
I really love the stain color and whatever your light source in the room is - whether window or fixture will change the color too so I'd leave it as is! Beautiful!!!
I like the different wood tones and I think the light looks promising. The kittens are so adorable!
3rd times the charm. Start over and stain again but use an old rag and wipe it down lifting the color to not be as intense.
Those sweet kitties are awfully cute ☺️
Your bathroom looks nice. I personally like the variance in the wood stain. I asked my husband who does woodworking. He said the stain absorbs differently due the density differences in the lumber. You can try sanding the darker pieces down and paint heavily thinned shellac. Then restain the wood. Basically what you want to do is increase the density of the wood so it doesn't absorb as much stain.
Seeing the wood on the front tube cover and upper shelf gives the bathroom charming character. With the light fixtures I feel wiring can be adjusted to the height you need it to be. But it's a cool design Abby.
Love the light!!!!
Those kittens might as well grow up to be indoor/outdoor cats.
My indoor cat doesn’t let any other critters to exist in my house,
not even a fly that has managed to enter my house.
Cats are the BEST at keeping a house critter free.😂
Yeah, mine eliminate any creature that dares enter the house. Yep, I have not had flies in my house in years. Whenever they get in, they are doomed almost immediately!
We have two indoor dogs and ZERO burglars😊
My male cat doesn't care if their are flies, mosquitos, or even mice in my house. He is a scardy cat!
Let it go!! It is just perfect the way it is. Once your lighting, accessories and linens are in, they will soften the space just perfectly. You did just fine.
I like the definition of the darker wood x
So Abby, we are going to need regular kitten updates from now on!!!! ❤️ As far as the different colors of stain…. I think you wiped on the sink and the window sill with a rag and the others you painted on with a brush. Sometimes that makes a difference. I know from experience.
Nothing seals the bonds of brotherhood like bisquit making! They are sooo adorable!
Abby, I think it looks beautiful. It looks very rich looking.
Take a thinner and "wash" it down to a lighter color. That should lighten it up without killing the color.
I've been a painter for 35 years and that was my first thought!! If it's oil based stain use thinner on a rag to remove some of the stain.
That sounds like the best answer
Instead of poly you could wax the boards and use a white or other light colored wax. It gives a nice, natural look.
Maybe the wood looks darker on that side because the sun shines on the wood on the sink side? IDK but it looks nice. Love the kittens and hope they make it inside by winter!!!!❤😊
Love your lamp
It's beautiful and
A great choice.😊
I love the darker stain compared to the lighter color. you could darken the stain on the sink instead.
The wood in front of your bathtub looks amazing! I hope you find a solution that works best for you. I watch every episode that you put out. You are such a beautiful soul. I love watching you on TH-cam Abby. I love the light fixture!
I love it! Restain the lighter ones to make them darker to match better.
I like the light , it’s cute.
The darker stain is gorgeous! Looks very elegant.
Abby it's so perfect to pops,, it blends and is beautiful. we love it all.ohhh and the light.nice
I like the dark boards and the light😊
Think it looks just fine. The differences in two batches of wood could be why there is a color difference. You also mentioned that the new wood was cedar not pine earlier in the video and that can definitely be why there is a color diffference.
OMG those kittens are PRECIOUS!!! The house is looking great too!
Love the hanging litting .....nice compliment to your beautiful bathroom...it also will give a light filled bathroom
Your Dad is an extremely talented man!! Lucky you!!
I love that bathroom. I think once you have the plants and things on the shelf and windowsill, it will not be noticeable. I have found when staining wood that the same stain looks different on different types of wood.
Also, those kittens are beyond adorable 😍
Your light is lovely.
Looks like a bunch of people already told you what went wrong -not the stain, but the application. I wouldn't redo it. Just sand it down some where the stain is dark before you varnish or urethane it. Don't paint on stain unless you immediately wipe it off with a rag. It literally stains! 😂 Operator error makes for lesson learned, and it doesn't look horrible. Your dad gives you beautiful wood. You will cherish all that lumber in years to come.
PS...stain is meant to bring out the natural beauty of the wood... highlight the knots and grain...not cover it up like paint.
Love the bathtub wood front color. I think it’s close to the color of the sink wood and there’s something to be said for an imperfect, natural look to all your woods!
I’m crazy about your hanging lamp!! How cute❤❤❤
Love the light. The stain is not too bad. It will all come together. ❤
I don't know why you don't like it it's beautiful absolutely gorgeous
I just watched again the video that you have done the vanity and the difference was that you used a pre stain wood conditioner before stain it. Maybe that is the reason why the colour look different. You can sand the boards again Apply the pre stain wood conditioner and stain it. You can even Apply the stain with some rags to in order lighter the colour. Try before with a piece of the same wood to see the results before sanding.
House is already looking lovely
Aw look at those they are playing 😊 Hello by the way enjoying watching your videos. Its looking great ❤
That kitten loves you so much!
Hi Abby Jim and Jay.!!👏 From your friend in the Florida panhandle.🎉❤😊 I really love all your details and you're putting in your new home and it's just coming along beautifully.
Thank you for sharing and God bless you guys. Please say hi to Brenda for us.
Honestly imho when wood tones and furniture are too matching l think it’s boring, or not as interesting. So I like the stained wood just as it is.
I actually like the darker color best. It really shows off the tile backsplash better.
I love the light.
I like the light!
Loving the darker cedar w/stain. Perhaps the shelf wood is cedar as well? Anyway, it’s a winner! Peace.
The colors are fine you can barely see a difference, the hanging lamp is a perfect touch😊
To get a more consistent look on the stained wood, first, use a wood conditioner (Minwax) then put stain on for a few minutes then wipe it off. Additionally, different wood from different trees, even the same species, may take stain differently regardless of what you do. Different species for sure turn out differently.
You can make stains darker but almost impossible to lighten the dark stain. It’s just the charm and uniqueness of using natural materials.
Different colored wood stains look fine together. They complement each other which is nice. Live with it for a while, then decide.
Looking Good . ! 👍👀
Your home is moving ahead at warp speed now, yay! Every single thing that you and Jay do now shows how close to "done" you are. Side note, kittens are way better than tv, and much more entertaining and bonus! They are great for relieving stress. I had 2 Orange 5 month old kittens, their tortishell mom, and another big gray tiger boi sleeping in my bedroom right now. Bliss!
I have always wiped it down right after I apply and that seems to make a big difference. The longer it sits on the wood before wiping the darker it will get.
Just a thought
I like the darker stain! And the light really fits!
I love it!! 🐈🐱🐺
I’ve faced this problem before myself. I mixed different stains such as various oak stains, maple etc along with turpentine making the necessary, adjustments. I used the back side of the wood for the test run. After I was happy with the way the wood took the stain, I turned it to the side I wanted to show and stained it. The whole thing was a tedious process, but it worked.
I look forward to seeing other comments to learn a better solution. I really enjoy your videos. I love your house. All of your hard work is coming together for a beautiful, peaceful place to live.
I love what you are doing with your downstairs bathroom and laundry room.
I like the difference while at the same time I probably would have questioned it also
Really like the light
You cud take another coat on the light ones so they are more the same its the easiest instead of sanding of another time! Thanks for the video ♥ Cats are so cute!!
The wood will look different because light coming in the window will make your sink a touch lighter, look it at night with the lights on, looks good to me
Looks fine to me. It’s pretty
I love the dark wood on the tub. Really stands out nicely with everything else lighter.
As to the stain, it's easier to go darker than it is to lighten what's already finished. I would try to darken the lighter wood, as opposed to lightening the darker wood, if you decide you want them to be a closer match. I absolutely love how your home is coming together; you have great taste!
Beautiful lampshade! Take time to decide on the colour of the stained planks. Greetings from South Africa. 😊
I love your style. The bathroom looks fantastic 😊
Your bathroom is coming along and looks nice.
My niece has the rattan lights and they are really pretty.
Take a sander over the darker boards until you reach the shade you like. Sanding should (may) make them lighter.
Keep tje lights Nd the boards. ❤️❤️❤️🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦❤️❤️❤️
you go girl!!!
I think the cedar boards on the tub look great just like they are, I'd leave them. With the shelf, its going to show dust so much more, being as dark as it is. Even tho its a pain to sand and redo, personally, I'd do it anyways. If you're not completely happy with it now, you probably won't be happy with it once its installed, and wish you'd redone it afterall. Get a smaller can of a slightly lighter stain. And do the wipe on wipe off technique others have suggested. Or do a test swatch on a scrap piece from the same board so you don't have to keep redoing the same one over and over. Beautiful progress, regardless of what you decide to do with it!! ❤
The difference give it contrast, looks good better then one shade
❤ less light hits the bath, would that be some of the difference. Giving it time is a good idea. Fabulous work
I think you might get used to it after a few weeks. You are doing a great jpb.
