I drove the first pre-production R-50 through the west in the summer of 1986 as a young intern engineer in Gleaner's engineering department. Much of the video for this was shot then. At 6:00 you'll see a strange header. Gleaner wanted to really push the R50's threshing system that summer but the R50's unloading auger was too short to unload into a truck with a 30' header. So they welded a 24' header (driver's left) and a 30' header (driver's right) into a single header, and I think that's the header at the 6:00 mark. It's the only 27' header (12'+15') that Gleaner ever built, I believe. It didn't work well. It would start to porpoise in lighter wheat when the operator would drive faster. The test R50 had some strange engine mount vibrations that we eventually fixed in the field with heavier steel. Other than that it was really a pleasure to drive. We joked it handled like a sports car compared to the testbed R70s we were running. Over 30 years ago!

Air cooled engines in combines sounds like an excellent way to start a fire.

Not to mention it was a gutless wonder with no torque in comparison to the Allis Chalmers diesel engine

N7 was beast. Even heldvits own 20 years later. A gleaner set right will cut cleaner and leave less behind than newer machines aswell. Just sad its hard to get any good service.

No trying to knock them but we were always afraid of em. When they started painting Deutzes orange and selling them like that we went and looked but somethin bout "air cooled" bout scares the hide off southern farmer. It gets hot down here, we asked grandpa if it was hot in the summer in Germany and he said it was pretty mild over there maybe high of 80 in the summer. So we stayed away from them. Although he did say if the Germans make ut, it works fine, haha. Man better days fellas, better days.

Hello Alex, we farm in Southeast Michigan and we get hot during the summer. We own a R40, Deutz DX 160, Deutz Allis 7120, and a Deutz Allis 6150. We primarily use the tractors during the summer making hay. It could be 95 degrees outside and the oil temp gauge would barely move.

My grandpa had a gleaner with an air cooled engine and he had problems with over heating and eventually it burned to the ground... it was blown off and serviced every day
