They should have built the L series for 10 more years and did the updated R series 2 Comfortech cab along with other updates where needed. They gave up a considerable market share by not doing that IMO. At that time the rotary Gleaner still carried a bad rep, undeserved by that time in my view, but the bad rep persisted, where the L and M series had a great rep and the L series was in the very popular at the time, class 5 size. There were custom cutters that still used the L series until they absolutely had to move on and Deutz-Allis and later AGCO would have sold plenty. That's my belief. And they could have fairly easily expanded the L one more walker to compete directly with the 9600 Deere. Lots of custom cutters dropped Gleaner for the Deere for two reasons, one because they wanted a conventional combine and two, because the Gleaner dealers disappeared..... that's still a problem that AGCO doesn't seem to care to address.
My Gleaner dealer was just bought out by Ziegler and if anyone knows anything about Ziegler, they prefer to sell Lexion/Claas and that's about it. So AGCO will let that dealer slowly slip away, though they will push the Challenger track tractors which fits what I think AGCO would want. Push out Gleaner and make room for there new Fendt which looks like a mechanical nightmare to me. Just what do those monsters weigh? I thought farmers wanted a lighter machine?

Even though I’m an Allis guy, I always thought the green striped machines looked so much better. Too bad they quit making the conventionals after this year (1986).

It actually was '87 when they stopped.

I think it wasn't so much the green stripe that made them look good but the gunmetal blue cab vs the white cab and the silver wheels vs orange wheels.

The last of the Gleaner rotaries with "good" engines until AGCO came around and remembered what was causing so many to leave and put a Cummins in.

Deutz Allis actually had a good combine then, but a year later they screwed up by going with air-cooled engines.

Even though deuts was the reason allis chalmers stopped, Deutz allis did a good job on the r series, except when they put the air cooled engines in the combines

Gleanerman, I’m an “all brand” guy but I like gleaners better than other combines, I think the s series gleaner combines are really nice

I personally really like the Gleaner air cooled combines. We have owned a R40 for years and have never had a problem with the Deutz engine.

Chris The Farmer and I hope you never do have a problem. I used to work for an AGCO dealership and the air cooleds were a nightmare to deal with. We always had to go through FEH out of Pendleton OR to get anything on them. Most of the air cooled gleaners in our area burned up or moved out of the area

    • @SilverGleaner

@@motordudeable They were a good engine that needed different maintenance expectations than liquid cooled engines. Yes, the big problem is getting parts and today not many places will service them. They are so different to work on and if done wrong they will be a problem. I worked at AGCO dealer back when the 2 series combines came out in 1992.

Loving Gleaner vid👍unfortunately you don’t see any L3/R series with green stripe combines harvesting in my area

    • @SilverGleaner
      @SilverGleaner 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

They only made the green stripe L and M series for about a year and a half at most. Same with the R5,R6 and R7. Couple that with the bad farm economy and an unstable company, I can see why there aren't many anywhere.

    • @jamieshields9521

SilverGleaner it’s sad tale with tractors too, like AGCO do tribute orange tractor to go with Gleaner combine.

@@jamieshields9521 Deutz and later AGCO should have kept building the L series combine. Lots of farmers didn't want to go rotary at the time and the L series were still very popular and carried a great reputation in some areas and it was a class 5 combine which was about the most popular size across the country. Even some custom operators were still using class 5 machines. If Deutz would have updated the L3 or L4 with simpler drives like they did with the R series and if they put the same cab on as the R42/52/62/72 I think the L would have lived for another 10 years and they would have kept some customers who were lost to Deere.
Deutz and AGCO also gave very little support to dealers and instead bought up all those sideline companies of which most were run into the ground.
There was a Cummins powered L4 produced in Mexico separate from AGCO built by a Mexican company actually owned by Americans who bought the Mexican Allis-Chalmers factory where Allis built combines meant for south of the border.

SilverGleaner yes there were plenty L2 around here n Gleaner did improve on L2 it would had success which CaseIH small chassis from 2100 to 140 series. For our farming operation we went with CaseIH as parts, dealership were available. Having gone from MF n Gleaner combines, we have jump up to class 8 red top 8010 even though class 5 would do fine, 8010 was much cheaper option to buy then used Gleaner same era n CaseIH class 5 combine.

@@jamieshields9521 The L2 and L3 were great for their time at any rate and held the majority market share in the US throughout the 1970's. I've often though that I should modify my L2 and change a lot of the chain drives over to belts like my R52 has. Fan drive, shoe drive, feeder drive etc etc. And throw an R series cab on. That L2 is one corn eating machine.
