Hi Michelle! Denim is my "go-to" for Hospice quilts, backed with flannel. I save all the other parts of the jeans also; I use the cut off side seams as Xmas ornaments once I've rolled them up into circles, adding a loop and small decorations. Pockets are saved for potholders, using other scraps from my stash. The tiniest bits of denim are saved to make roses. Even the smallest gift made with my hands makes people smile. Thanks for this video and for your hard work. Hugs from Canada.
Awwhhh what a delightful attitude🥰 You have such wonderful ideas, thanks for sharing! I wish we could share pictures here on you tube🙃🤔. God’s blessings for caring and sharing 🙏🏻✝️❤️😀
Thanks so much for sharing!!! I wondered what those seams could be used for!!! How do you use the pockets for pot holders? Sounds so interesting!!! I would love to see them!!
@@thesimplequilter7499 Hi Michelle. I didn't take photos of the potholders, but am going to enclose the link to the video from Scrappy's Patch You Tube channel, which is the best/fastest one. Enjoy! th-cam.com/video/_2tdS9zY7wY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=N1xD6kBwG4sdzZVR
You are so welcome! I'm so glad you found it useful! One of my viewers said they use the pockets to replace the little pockets in women's' pants because they are so small. Maybe you will find that tip useful since you sew garments!
I always enjoy watching your videos. I used the pockets from my sister's jeans when she passed and included them in memory quilts for her husband and daughter. It was the first block that they noticed.
Twenty five years ago I made denim and flannel lap quilts for my sons to take to college. I had fun cutting up their old jeans. I made several for the nephews too. The nieces received “Quillos “. Right now I’m making items for a craft fair I’m in on October 17th. Table Toppers, walker bags and adult bibs. No plans for Christmas sewing this year, but that could change 😂
I made on of those years ago and it turned out great!! I recently gave it to one of my sisters because my quilts were just piling up here at home!! I thought maybe it could be used as a picnic quilt! Keep going!! You will love it when it is done!!
I have saved my husbands work jeans for over 30 years. I saved the pockets and cut the denim into 6” squares and stored in containers over the years I made quilts for grands and now great grands. Lately I have taken the squares and put 3” squares all around I am stacking them up to put together one day.
Hey Michelle, awesome info👏👏👏 I will be checking out the video you mentioned and would love to see your finished gift!!! I’ve been saving the denim, someday I will put it to use😝 Have a great day 🥰❤️😀
I have collected denim. I’m planning on making a modified cathedral window block and make a quilt for the car to use in winter. Really like how you deconstructed the jeans.
Thanks for your terrific denim quilt tips, Michelle! I've been saving our old jeans for many years & am now inspired to sew them into quilts. Do you quilt or tie your denim quilts?
I did a faux cathedral window quilt and quilted it on my domestic. I also did a picnic rag quilt and you sew an X on each block before assembling. These are the only two denim quilts I have made. I have a lot of denim blocks though to make more!!!
@@thesimplequilter7499 you will never regret that purchase. I bought mine many years ago to cut flannel in layers. It went through 7 layers like butter. I cut batting with them and they have never filed me. I have cut layers of denim, corduroy and even upholstery fabric. It was one of my best purchase. Even though they aren’t used daily, when you need to use them you are very happy you did. I’m elderly with arthritis and they have saved me with cutting my denim, batting and even 7 layers of flannel when I made burp cloths. I love all your tutorials. Thank you for sharing them with the rest of us.
I bet you would enjoy checking out ‘Sewing in the Fog’ in San Francisco presented by an award winning denim quilt artist and teacher who traveled the world with Levi Strauss Co. Thanks for the tips. At 75 I know I would have forgotten to change the needle on the upcoming denim book bag I’m sewing for my granddaughter.
I save all the skinny seam strips. They can be rolled up and glued as you roll with fabric glue and made into coasters, hot plate mats, doormats, and can be woven too. Can be woven into placemats, bathmats, doormats. Can't waste them!
I started a Jean quilt, taken from one of our beloved quilt magazines (can’t remember which one), finishing the quilt has been the biggest reason I haven’t finished it. I did take these from all my past jeans [the ones I thought I would fit it again someday. ] My idea is to use a flannel, not a great backing choice, but it does seem to be fitting, somehow. I did use a pocket or two. Hope this gives me finishing ideas.
I think flannel for the back is a great idea! I would prewash the flannel since the denim has been washed many times, if they were jeans you wore. Flannel shrinks quite a bit when it is washed. Perhaps you could make a rag quilt...
another invaluable left over is the cotton that they make the FRONT pockets with. It is light and durable. I redo those silly small pockets on womens pants with them and then my phone or money can stay in. And your tip about ripping the seam at the pocket top is invaluable. I didnt think of doing that and have cut the back pockets out with too little denim above the pocket almost makes them unuseable for a block, but I have taken a razor blade and rip the sewing that holds the pocket down and still re use the pocket .
I’m not much of a quilter but I save all of my husband’s dungarees to reuse. There is never much left of the front that I can use but the back of the legs are usually in pretty good condition 😂

I will be filming a video and posting it before too long! Stay tuned!
My favorite time of my day is your time! THANK YOU! Happy Wednesday from Florida where Hurricanes seem to be angry with us! Please feel better ❤
Thanks Sandra! Stay safe!!
I used denim from old jeans to make a quilt as you go quilt with denim on bottom and plaid flannel on top of sandwiches. It turned out real cute.
I bet it does!!!!! Thanks for watching and sharing!!!
Great show. Thanks!
Thanks Rae!!!
Wow! What a great idea, I was gifted a large stack of 5 inch squares of denim! I may have to try this. Thank you.❤

Beverly, I have slowed down on my video production. Right now I am posting once every two weeks. I really had to cut back.
@@thesimplequilter7499 I TOTALLY understand that!!! You must “put your own oxygen mask on first!”
Denim can be hard on your hands to cut, I use the spring open Fiskar scissors or the spring loaded Fiskar scissors made for snipping rag quilts.

I have some electric scissors that work great for all that heavy cutting.
I am going to be checking the pink power ones out!!! Thanks for watching and sharing!!!
I also add jeans pockets on the inside front of my denim jackets for my cell phone as the pockets are too small. Plus it keeps phone dry.
