The original one was demolished long time ago. No one knows what it really looks like. The one in the manga was the Japanese author's imagination, maybe based on some other fortressed he saw in China. This one was rebuilt according to a fortress painted on the tomb that dates back to the Han Dynasty. The landscape also changed dramatically as I illustrated in the video. However, Hangu Pass was indeed a crack in the Loess Plateau.
@@yanyangoaroundinchina do you think it was much bigger than the rebuilt one? Was it actually the most important defense for Xianyang? I’m so curious I have searched all over the internet for answers but it all leads me to the fictional version or google just doesn’t have any information on it.
I don't think it was much bigger. Hangu Pass was a narrow passage. It was a crack in the Losse Plateau. History book described it as "车不得方轨，马不能并辔" (A cart could barely pass it. Two horses couldn't run next to each other). The passage I filmed in the video probably was the original one, although the landscape in the plateau has changed a lot. If not, the original passage should be about as wide as that. The gate of the passage was rebuilt. But if the passage was that narrow, how much bigger the gate could have been?
It was the most important defense for Xianyang. I think I have demonstrated the reasons in detail in the video.

Here is a Chinese Tv drama named Qin Epic, you can see how they replicated Hangu Pass at at minute 5:30
Interesting you mention that Suqin was who convinced the other states to atack Qin. In the Kingdom manga, is actually Li Mu (Ri Boku in japanese) who convinces Chunshen from Chu to persuade the rest of states. Su Qin is not even mentioned.
Really nice to see reall history and not only fiction from the manga.
The Japanese manga really helped spreading the Chinese culture and history in certain way. When this video started to get clicks via search of keyword #Hangu Pass, I wondered why so many people were interested in this place and how they even learned about it. Gradually the comments started pointing to the Kingdom. I just started reading that manga.
But yeah, Suqin persuaded the six states to form an alliance and Zhangyi (who was Suqin's classmate) worked with State Qin and broke that alliance. This history is well-known in China. We all learn it in China because the lessons and meanings in this history still apply to situations of today in terms of relationships among countries or groups: the weakness of alliance strategy and how to break that, etc. That's what drove me to make this video.
I just watched the section about the battle of Hangu Pass in the Kingdom. Let me put it this way. There were five battles formed by the other five to six states against the State Qin during a period of a century. The one in the Kingdom was the last one happened in 241B.C. Chunshen from State Chu did play a major role in this battle. Su Qin (380B.C - 284B.C.) died before the stories in the Kingdom. It was him who officially proposed the so-called vertical alliance strategy (合纵). He dealt with the great grandfather of the king in the Kingdom.

@@yanyangoaroundinchina Japan made an anime about the rise of Qin called Kingdom and in one of the episodes it shows an all out battle between Qin and the coalition armies there at Hangu pass :)
I think Liu Bang broke through Guanzhong via Wu Pass. Hangu was just too hard.
Alliance is pronounced ah-LAI-yuns ... the mispronounciation is a bit distracting ....
