The Mysterious Khazar Empire | Historical Turkic States

  • From the ashes of the Western Göktürk Empire, a new state emerged between the Don basin, Volga river and the Caucasus. Calling themselves "Khazars", these Turkic people established a political entity that very quickly rose to the rank of an empire. Strategically located along the ancient Silk Road(s), the Khazars controlled much of the trade in the region and, making use of their military prowess, managed to defeat all neighboring nomadic peoples. But this state was led by both a Khagan and Bek, and this dual kingship enabled a flexible reign over their subjects. The fate of the Khazars was ultimately sealed by their foreign policy, as they served both the Byzantine interest of keep the advancing Muslim Arab Empires out of the Caucasus and the nomadic Turkic peoples who could roam away freely along the Eurasian Steppe Belt.
The most remarkable trait of the Khazars, however, was their conversion to Judaism. Whether a majority of the Turkic population or only the ruling dynasty converted away from Tengrism is subject to speculation. Nonetheless, this speculation is purposefully linked with the "Khazar Hypothesis" which, ever since the 19th century, proposes a Turkic Khazar origin of the Jewish people who later appeared in Central and Eastern Europe.
How correct are such assumptions? Is there any evidence for this theory? How did the Khazars establish their state in the first place, and what impact did it have on the political and cultural affairs in the region? Let us find out in this new documentary from Khan's Den.

The buzz this video has generated in the past few months is crazy. Really did not expect that much attention. But all the better. Let me introduce myself.
I am Emre, the founder and producer of Khan's Den. This channel focuses on the history of the Turkic peoples of Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Most of the videos handle topics like the many historical Turkic states - among which the Khazar Khaganate was one of the most important - and the Turkic peoples' ancient way of life. The reason why I made this video was that I wanted to give a non-biased outlook at the Khazar Turks. I had the honor and privilege to interview Peter B. Golden, who for more than 50 years has contributed immensely to Turkic studies. However, I do not necersarily share all the views presented in this video. That is why towards the end, I mentioned the genetic studies of those who agree with the Khazar hypotheses.
It's important to show both sides of the coin. If you think I managed to do so, please leave a "like". If you'd like to watch more of my stuff, subscribe and click on the notification bell. You have even more videos at your disposal, e.g. about the Xiongnu, the Huns of Attila, the Uyghur Empire and - most recently - the Celestial Turks (Göktürks) that were mentioned in the video several times.
And if you would like to get an overview of all of my projects, consider visiting the official website: www.TheKhansDen.com
    Thanks for watching! :)

The Khazars were as powerful as the Byzantine Empire, which they befriended in the 10th century and who wanted to use them as allies in the struggle against the equally powerful Arabs of the Muslim Caliphate.
Khazaria lasted for about five hundred years. It is believed that without the Khazars, Europe (or at least a sizable part of that continent) would have been completely Islamic.
Arthur Koestler says in The Thirteenth Tribe: “As Charles Martel's France saved Gaul and Western Europe, so the Khazars saved the eastern approaches to the Volga, the Danube, and the East Roman Empire Itself.” (P. 30).

Be free to google the 4th Jewish encyclopedia, which was published just before Herzl created Zionism... and you will see in the first two pages that it was an open secret. Jews used to openly refer to Chazars as the source of their roots...and never Palestine

    Thanks for the video, guys!
I'm Kalmyk Mongolian (Lower Volga region) and have always been fascinated by the history of Khazars. I always had an impression that Khazars were the smartest of nomadic empires of that time, as they only chose Judaism as a state religion for political reasons not to be associated with anybody but stayed Tengrist between themselves.
Lots of ppl often confuse that Khazars were Jews by blood and migrated to the region from Middle East, while in reality Khazars were a federation of tribes what's today is considered as "Turkic/Mongolic/Finno-Ugric/Caucasian" nations.
Even though there are no actual written records of their language, if you trace down the geographical history you can figure that Chuvash and Crimean Tatar Jews speak the language that could be considered quite possibly the actual Khazar language. There are plenty of archeological sites found in Kalmykia in the last decade or so near Caspian Sea dated to Khazars period (blacksmith, various factories such as pottery and hand-tools making as well as lots of burial sites).
In some weird way, I feel like Dzungars (centuries later) used exactly the same tactic as Khazars. When they would discovered areas with natural resources, they would form a village around it, while still being a nomadic nation for the most part but kept the villages as a "work sites".
    Incredible! Cheers everyone!
PS Gazar or Gazr in Mongolian languages means Nature or Grass or field.

I am a Turk of Turkey. Phenotype of Khasars is like Tatars and Turks of Golden Horda Satate. Their language is an accent of Turkish. Once I watched a documentary on national geographic, İt was about an endangered people protected by UNESCO. When one of those people was talking, I was shocked , because I could understand what she was saying. Because She was speaking in a language very similar to Turkish. And she said 'we are Karaim'. This was almost 15 years ago. After this incident, I did research about Khazars and found out that they are Turkish. You know famous American actor, Charles Branson's religion was Judaism. I was very wonder about this subject when l learned that. I asked my self why such a man who looks like İndians were a Judaist. So after learning about the Khazars, I realized that he was a Khazar Turk(Lipka Tatar)..By the way İn Turkey there are many people Khazar origined. Even there is a district in İstanbul called 'Karaköy' . This name comes from 'Karaim' Turks who came from Crimea and settled Karaköy in İstanbul. Karaköy=Karaim.

To understand a biological tribal affiliation (in terms of Y-chromosomal haplogroups, subclades, and haplotypes) of two excavated Khazar bone remains in the lower Don region in the south of Russia, we have extracted and analyzed their DNA and showed that both belonged to haplogroup R1a and its subclade Z93. The pattern could be considered typically “Turkic”, and not a Jewish DNA lineage. Their haplotypes were also identified and reported here. The haplotypes indicate that both Khazars were unrelated to each other in a sense that their common ancestor lived as long as 1500 - 2500 years earlier than them, in the middle of the II millennium BC-beginning of the I millennium BC, during typically Scythian times or somewhat earlier. Their haplotypes are unrelated to well-known Jewish haplotypes of haplogroup R1a.

The fact is that the leading elite has converted to Judaism, as far as the entire population in the ruling area is concerned, there are now doubts for a variety of mostly political reasons. In any case, we know that there were several large Jewish communities throughout the dominion and that Khazaria was a safe haven for Jews from outside. This is not assign by hand. It is interesting that Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern European descent sometimes have pre-Islamic Turkish names like Alper, Alpert, Alperov, Balaban, Bal, Balak... as surnames. Unfortunately, historical topics are treated today with a nationalistic political point of view, which is why we will not be properly informed about this topic in the future, despite the historical facts.

Beginning in the 8th century CE, the Khazar royalty and notable segments of the aristocracy converted to Judaism; the populace appears to have been multi-confessional-a mosaic of pagan, Muslim, Jewish and Christian worshippers-and polyethnic. A modern theory, that the core of Ashkenazi Jewry emerged from a hypothetical Khazarian Jewish diaspora, is generally treated with scepticism. This Khazarian hypothesis is sometimes associated with antisemitism and anti-Zionism.
The conversion of Khazars to Judaism is reported by external sources and in the Khazar Correspondence, Hebrew documents whose authenticity was long doubted and challenged, but now widely accepted among specialists as either authentic or as reflecting internal Khazar traditions.Conversion of steppe or peripheral tribes to a universal religion is fairly well attested phenomenon. Both the date of the conversion, and the extent of its influence beyond the elite, often minimized in scholarship, are a matter of dispute, but at some point between 740 CE and 920 CE, the Khazar royalty and nobility appear to have converted to Judaism, in part, it is argued, perhaps to deflect competing pressures from Arabs and Byzantines to accept either Islam or Orthodoxy.
The fact is that archaeology shows that it is impossible for the Jews of Europe to be descended from the Khazarian converts, no matter what claims are made by the detractors of Israel and those steeped in antisemitism.
A simple search of the oldest synagogues in Europe proves them wrong. The oldest synagogue in Western Europe uncovered in an archaeological dig to date is the Ostia Synagogue in the ancient Roman port of Ostia, in Italy. The present building, of which partial walls and pillars set upright by archaeologists remain, dates from the 4th century. However, excavation revealed that it is on the site of an earlier synagogue dating from the middle of the 1st century CE, that is, from before the destruction of the Temple. The Bova Marina Synagogue site in Bova Marina, Calabria. This site was discovered 1983. The remains of this ancient synagogue has been dated to the 4th Century
The Köln Synagogue in Cologne, Germany has been excavated 2007/2012 and dates clearly pre Carolingian (bef. 780/90). There is at the moment some strong evidence that it dates back to the early 4th century when emperor Constantine in 321 issued a privilege for the Cologne Jews. This has been confirmed recently by the find of a rainwater mikveh of the 4th century inside the building complex
.The Polycharmos Synagogue, of Stobi, Macedonia, was discovered in 1974; it was adjacent to a Christian church. The Synagogue site, itself, has an archaeological record of two (2) older Synagogues under the foundation of the Polycharmos Synagogue dating to the 4th century BCE.
If the Khazars were the ancestors of European Jewry, they built synagogues around Europe 300- 1000 years before they converted.

Per henry ford in his book, The Complete International Jew: "The Jews are not "The Chosen People," though practically the entire Church has succumbed to the propaganda which declares them to be so.” More importantly, let us get The Scripture: Genesis 10:2-5 {2} The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras. {3} And the sons of Gomer; Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah. {4} And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim. {5} By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.

Meaning they remembered the story about the Khazars being defeated by the tribes of Israel.

Carla is one of those who like to yell anti-semitism, or disinformation whenever Zionism is exposed. before the 13th tribe was published there is a book called "facts are facts" by benjamin h. freedman. it is taken from a letter he wrote to dr. david goldstein back in 1954 in which he presents his research on the khazar question. that said, just because someone isn't a "historian" doesn't mean that they can't conduct research. Carla either relies on "the experts", or remains ignorant of her own free will, or is part of the problem.

A similar view was held by the 11th century Arab historian Sa'ed Al-Andalusi. In his book "Category of the nations" he said the following about the Turks: "And their virtue which they skilled in is warfare and its means/tools, they are the best nation when it comes to chivalry, archery and swordsmanship"
In another part of the book he says that the Chinese used to refer to the king of the Turks as "The king of the lions".

Let me tell you this, I was also curious and I asked a lot. Praise be to Allah, he guided me to the right path.
Those responsible for the events that have occurred in the world for the last 350 years are the same sect. The so-called "French" Revolution, Wilhelm's invasion of England, Marxism, the colonization of China and the Opium wars, the war against the shogunate in Japan...
A sect that invaded the whole world, in our country (Ottoman Empire) it was based in Thessaloniki. It was the so-called "Unionists" who dethroned II. Abdulhamid. Find out what race the people of Thessaloniki belong to. Then look at how mosques were turned into stables or how Muslims were hanged during the Republic period.
In World War II, it was actually a movement supported by this party that wanted to overthrow Stalin, and Stalin expelled the Leninists in the Great Purge.
The name of the people who do what I say is Edom. Edom comes from Esau, the two sons of the prophet Isaac (the other son is Jacob). After the Jews conquered them, they started to live like them. When the Gokturk Khaganate collapsed, the Khazars, one of the Onoghurs, emerged as its successors. The Edomites later migrated among the Khazars. There is the Schechter Letter, which explains how the Khazars began to live like the Edomites, I suggest you read it, then there is Hashdai ibn Sharput's correspondence with the Khazars. These Edomites married the Khazars. The group called Ashkenazi Jews today comes from here. If you look, they have white skin and red hair. Esau was also reddish when he was born.
      Khazars are from Togarmah

Yes I can see that too. Thank you for the info.
I believe it was the Maccabees that forcefully converted many from Idumaea (Esau) before Christ Jesus the Lord and by the time the Lord Jesus came on the scene, the Herod dynasty was ruling who were of Esau. The Pharisees were rebuked hard by Jesus for their oral traditions and laws which is what the so called Rabbi's of today still use, the Babylonian Talmud.
When the Jews were exiled to Babylon for 70 years, many of them brought back traditions from there.
The Roman Catholic church got many things from the books of Maccabees which are not Biblical. Many of their abominations are from the wolves of old. The colours they use, the expensive clothing, the verbage and even the goddess of old from the Old Testament, calling her the queen of heaven.
      Jeremiah 7 & Jeremiah 44.
Many Protestant denominations if not all, have some man made doctrines that are not Biblical and are ruled by the ones who rule the world, the ones who say they are Jews but are not, called the Zionists.
The New Testament of the Bible says that it is Jerusalem who is Babylon the Great, the Mother of Harlots.
The unbelieving Jews, most likely the unbelieving Pharisees are the ones that Jesus and the apostle Paul said were wolves that crept into the church almost from the beginning, we are warned of them.
The Lord Jesus told them that they would have their kingdom taken away and that their temple would be destroyed and it was in 70AD. I believe they have been plotting and planning to get their kingdom back ever since and they got back to Jerusalem and have invaded, stolen and murdered many to do it.
I believe they were firmly planted in the so called Roman church and that is why there were crusades to attempt to take back Jerusalem but God and the Lord Jesus would not allow it........not until later.
Many Christians are very deceived. At the very end, the Lord Jesus is going to destroy Jerusalem for a third time and give her double for what she has done, with only a few people saved.
      (Ezekiel 21:14/Revelation 18:6)
Murderers and liars like their father the devil just as Jesus said.
      John 8:44
      King James Version
44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
In 2 places in the New Testament it says that those who say they are Jews but are not, are the synagogue of Satan.
      Revelation 2:9
      King James Version
9 I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
      Revelation 3:9
      King James Version
9 Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.
As a Christian, a true follower of Christ Jesus the Lord as it is written, we are never to kill not even to harm but to do good and to pray for our enemies.
