I feel like they glossed over one of the most important phrases he wrote: "she won't let me spend the money when there is something I want" (paraphrased). Without more data we can't see who is being ridiculous (I have a feeling it's both of them). We don't have the data to know if the problem is that he wants a $50000 truck and he's mad that she goes to a nice hair salon. Or maybe it's more like she's spending $500 a week on clothes and won't let him get a $50 tool. I don't know she goes over budget because she's being lavish, but maybe it's hard to stick to the budget because enough money wasn't allocated. What he wrote definitely makes her sound bad, but the bad attitude I sense makes me wonder if it was written with a bad attitude that hid some of the facts.

Just look at open garages when you drive around and notice all the insanely expensive gear that men have. It costs a fortune and most of it is only being used a few times a year if even that!

I always look very put together but my dresses are from Amazon and cost me $35 and I knit all sweaters myself.
I had a conversation the other day with a man and mentioned that I'm thinking about buying a certified Mercedes again ($25 000).
He looked at me and said "wow, holding the line going big with everything?"" while standing in front of his $50 000 truck that was loaded with a ski jet. The man is a carpenter!
I think it's kind of ridiculous that they have no understanding about the relationship and they automatically side with the woman. I don't know I'm not going to blame her but it's not really rational to assume anyone is at fault here when you don't know anything.
Took 10 years to get to that point of loving unity more than the things? It’s Amazing how many times I’ve heard that. The guy who got the inheritance after tithing should have talked to her yes, but he should have been more decisive, writing the check out for the mortgage.

I don’t know if people have to stay that long to get what you mentioned, lol but what I do know is after about 10 years things kind of level out and people who have been married much longer even up to 50 years have said marriage fully grown is the MOST beautiful thing one ever can experience in their entire lives. Maybe that’s why marriage is what God uses mainly to show His unfailing, unconditional Love throughout the whole earth... However, I cannot understand at all how people leave after 30 years. Why? Too much invested. You know too much...I think people have been duped into fighting the wrong battles with the wrong weapons and they do not understand their real enemy is a real devil who is after destroying their marriage and them. Some women may read some of these comments and agree saying, “Well said, he should show more of a backbone.” (In regards to a budget) Yes, he should. Others might say, if there is emptiness, maybe he should do more to be there for his wife helping her discover and experience a sense of fulfillment. A lot of It is likely tied to purpose and being actively involved in church. That’s how the 50 year marriages I know of have made it. Money is important as God attributed at least 20% of His teachings to it, but in one’s quest to be the Greatest, He said Love is the principal thing.

I, as a male, cannot disagree. If I could get laid everyday by a different female and get passive income in form of alimony or extract 50% from someone without doing anything to earn it, I would. It is because of the politics and it is very lucrative.

My brother says this all the time.
We never had a budget, but I do keep detailed records and we review them often. Now we're retired for twelve years and still save $850 a month from our pensions but not by planning. I can't explain it in Ramsey terms, but it's surely working! I guess it's just that our needs are small.
Or maybe she is controlling. I have an acquaintance who is on his way of being divorced from his wife. Among other red flags and controlling signs the wife controlled his money and would only give him an allowance to get by week by week.
Sometimes the wife is the tyrant and not the husband.

This seems to be a bigger issue with couples that went into marriage not on same page with finances and didnt care about money/debt issues when getting married. Money issues are normally one of the biggest issues couples face so you really need to be on the same page going into marriage.

Interestingly, around 8:00, Dave starts defending the wife without realizing it.
I rewatched and no he didn't. In fact the context of that was Unity in decision making, and how he is currently putting his foot down about a purchase he isn't ready to make. How is that defending the wife. His whole thing for nearly 30 years is 50/50 decision making and "free spirits" and "nerds" working together to understand each other.

Exactly whose inheritance was it? I noticed that pronouns are avoided here. If the inheritance was gifted solely to the wife, it's no wonder he would like her to agree before he spends it on their mutual debt. On the other hand, if it were made to the husband or to both of them as a couple (is that even possible?), he might not hesitate before writing the check to pay off their (mutual) mortgage.
Also, I don't think it's a bad thing if the wife is consulted before a major financial move is made. Sounds as if he's the one handling the finances and she's just along for the ride. Would have been interesting to hear the story from her perspective.
This is a matter on power/control, respect, and priorities.
And this is why I stay single, I'll NEVER be a women's personal ATM machine again...EVER.
Why were a personal ATM for one before? If you would let one person take advantage of you like that, I can understand that you would be scared to put yoirself in the situation that you would make bad choices again, but as long as you accept the blame for your past failures, I would call that growth. Congrats on that!
That's a sad response. 1st not all women look for a man to be an ATM machine, some of us work very hard & are wired to save money. 2nd sometimes its men who don't want to work & don't want to save. Its an individual's character traits.

4:00 In many states the inheritance is NOT part of communal marital property. Or it is HER inheritance.
If they get divorced that is HIS money (in many states). If he pays it towards the mortgage and later they get a divorced she profits. If he keeps it at the side it is out of the equation.

Mr Ramsey has been setting it up for the business to continue on without him. He's been talking about that for about ten years, and this is what it looks like. Kinda sad because Dave is THE MAN. Threaten to sell the house. That way you can say to maintain the budget, sacrifices must be made
My husband had "coversations" with me that lasted for hours. I hardly got a word in edgewise and was never heard. He would threaten that if I didn't agree, the conversation would have to start all over again. Wore me down. Whose inheritance was it? His? Or hers?

@@TylerCummings6 he never said that. He said, "I also cashed out a mutual fund from an inheritance." He never said, "My." My ex wanted complete control of any money that came in, including my inheritance, which I wanted to plan the use of together, as we were married. He argued against using it to pay off the variable HELOC on our home, but I did that anyway. He would have said similar to what this man said. I am not saying that it is the same situation, just that he is possibly not giving all the details.
Some things are better left unsaid.......cash the mutual fund out put right towards the mortgage. Let her bring up the subject, when next month's mortgage hits the mail.

Ok, then in the joint budget, they should have money allocated for each husband/ wife for “Free spending” where they can each spend whatever they want. I’d say $200 each at least. (ex: Husband-Miscellaneous=$200 & Wife-Miscellaneous=$200; preferably as sinking fund)
Also, this is one-sided. Is the wife in charge of maintaining the household and Steve spend most of his time at work? If so, I bet he may be underbudgeting household expenses (ex: groceries, kid expenses/school activities) being unaware of how much things actually cost. He needs to look back and see which areas she “overspends” in, and adjust.
