    "You are not special, water."
    Hahaha. Thanks for the humour and the fact.
    You taught us to try to figure out how artists achieve certain things. So, I looked and assumed that negative space, cross hatching, and certain lines, would do the trick...which turns out to be correct, but the features that really seemed to help give context were the 3 dark shades at the left, and the ring of sprays at the bottom.

      And of course, we can adjust everything if we want to improve our drawing. Sounds like you’re really understanding it all Eugene. 😀

    It was helpful to see how to map out the key lines in pen. It was comforting scenery to see you, the trees, and the train at the end.

    I love the advice to see water etc as another shape.
    I’m going to give this drawing a go. It will be challenging but I am looking forward to see what I learn along the way.
    Thanks Stephen.

    This is very common shape of water , nice and beautiful! But it’s very hard to draw . The interesting part is to leave the paper blank to represent the white color of the water . Thanks Stephen for your presentation!

    Hey Stephen! I discovered your channel a few days ago and I've been watching your videos whenever I can, you teach in a very didactic way and simplify what is complex in itself, even if sometimes I struggle a little to understand some things because my English is not very good.
    I would like to make a video request: How to draw lights the way you do, on poles, light fixtures and even how the sun is directed towards the viewer of the drawing, I really like the way you do this effect, it's very interesting and it has a nice result to watch.
    Thanks in advance and a big hug from Brazil!

    Greetings again from Yorkshire! Thank you for this video. Think between you and MuralJoe have enough guidance on subject of being able to draw/paint water from a photo or reference. I have been attempting to draw water à plein air, sketching down by the canal. It's challenging to say the least....but practice will make it easier.

      @@stephentraversart watched a vid of how to draw a country lane, was thinking that it didn't look like a very Australian vista and then you said it was my neck of the woods! Useful vid as am doing a painting which contains a tree lined curved dappled path leading into the distance. I have sketched it out and painted in many media to see which is best to evoke the Ethereal quality I seek. But doing the Notan technique (light-dark balance) really has helped made my studies pop, much like you describe in your tutorials.

    This is great as always. I'm sorry to ask so many questions on your videos 😬 I just happen to be studying your teachings so I appreciate you taking the time to always respond. Question: does line direction matter when conveying water? I'm practicing my daily lines so I can draw straight, but I find in one way I taper off naturally. Is this something to try and use to my advantage or do you think that with water it doesn't matter so long as I replicate it closely enough, as you said at the end before the train took you out. 🙏

    • @stephentraversart
      @stephentraversart  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Everything about line always matters in a line drawing. 😀. They are the words we tell our story with. Experiment. Try lines of different direction and compare the effects. 😀

    It would be great to see how you draw fog or smoke in pen and ink technique. They seem to be hard to draw as well...

    • @stephentraversart
      @stephentraversart  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ll never say never Bartek, but these are not subjects I really have experience with. Personally, I’d use marker tone for smoke and clouds and the like. 😀

    • @gnarthdarkanen7464
      @gnarthdarkanen7464 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, in case it helps... From pencil-sketch... I usually started with the objects I could see with the mind of what they are... the headlights and grill of an approaching car, a nearby tree trunk, or the windows of a house with light making them glow (for instance)... begin with thinner/lighter "reference" lines to establish what's "in the shot", and as you study the image reference, use the hatching and cross hatching in strokes and shapes to suggest the shapes or movements of smoke and fog so as to obscure details without utterly destroying the shapes and objects themselves... You can still make out the glowing window and its individual panes, but probably not the brick or block textures of the facade of the house itself, only the vague notion of a wall being there... and fog or smoke drifting on the air currents in whirls, blobs, or eddies... OR it can be sinewy and curvy, whooshed along by the wind. with loose curves and "lazy S's"... Nearer objects can get more details, but be careful about whether the tones are lighter or darker... and with a little farting around, in two or three experiments, you should be able to largely at least get the point across...
      The big different from pencil-sketch to ink is that you can't just creatively add "glow" by erasing marks... once they're on the page, you're kinda stuck with them... SO take your time to PLAN where you want to mark so as to create that "negative space" and figure out as you go where you need to darken things a little "artificially" so you can generate lighter tones even with the swirls and blobs to define your sluggish or whooshing fog or smoke...
      Finally, just a note... Fog and smoke come in at least 3 varieties... White is usually all water-steam... Blue-gray is usually oily mixes of vapor and burned smoke/carbon particulate... and black is rich in fuel-mixed with carbon-ash, causing thicker clumps, and often at high temperature or dubious chemistry fires... SO when dealing with steam, "white smoke" and fog, remember that it's white, and largely only casts shadows, so sparse line work above (toward light sources)... and you can do more definition in the shadowy or under-sides, like when you draw clouds... It's a little weird, but depending on what you're trying to EXPRESS ( like "this is fog or steam" and "that is hot smoke") you can plot out a little more forgiveness for yourself involving the "artificial darkening" as it were...
      Good luck... I hope this is helpful, at least getting you started... I still do an AWFUL LOT of "farting around" before I'm really ready to even "rough in" where fog and smoke are concerned... haha... BUT I can usually move with a bit of confidence when I get the majority of shapes and movements figured out... ;o)

    • @stephentraversart

      Try it and see. If I’d only had a 0.3 I could have drawn it slightly larger. There are no rules in the end, it’s personal preference/choice. 😀
